1H November Newsletter

Dear Parents,

I can’t believe that it is already November! I hope to meet all of you during our parent – teacher

interviews.

We have already had our first round of guest readers. I have been very pleased by the excitement

of the children sharing their stories. In case you haven’t checked, the November line up is in your

child’s agenda book.

Language Arts:

*Review and reinforce letter names and sounds.

*Blending words for both reading and writing, using the vowels: a. e, and i.

*Write simple sentences in their journal that begin with an upper case letter and end with

punctuation.

*Continue to ensure that students are printing their own sentences, when participating in writing

activities (using best guess spelling).

*Print their names using an uppercase letter only for the first letter.

*Continue Book in a Bag, Raz-Kids, and guided reading to further develop and enhance reading skills.

Mathematics:

* Learn more about the meaning of numbers.

* Recognize that addition involves joining groups and that subtraction involves taking one group

away.

* Use counters and other real-life materials to help solve simple number problems.

* Practise addition and subtraction to write and solve number problems.

You can practise these concepts at home by doing the following activities:

* The best way for your child to learn about subtraction is by telling subtraction stories. Say:

“There are 9 spoons in the drawer. I take out 4 spoons. How many spoons are in the drawer?

Page 2: 1H November Newsletter Dear Parents, · 1H November Newsletter Dear Parents, ... *Print their names using an uppercase letter only for the first letter. *Continue Book in a Bag, Raz-Kids,

* -Tell problems for your child to solve. For example: “There are 3 spoons on the table. We need 1

more. How many spoons do we need all together: Say: 3 and 1 equals 4.

* - Use 10 beads or buttons to play a hiding game. Hide 4 in your hand, leaving 6 visible. Ask: “How

many are missing?” Repeat, taking turns.

* - Place 3 pieces of pasta in a line. Add another 3. Say: “I have 3 pieces of pasta. I add 3 more.

Now I have 6.” Have your child arrange the 6 pieces another way.

* - With your child, use small household objects, such as spoons, to make addition and subtraction

stories.

Art:

We will be using elements of design in art works to communicate ideas, messages, and personal

understandings.

Music:

We will continue to use different voices and pitches while singing familiar songs.

Physical Education:

Your child will be expected to perform a variety of locomotor movements, travelling in different

directions and using different body parts.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will be starting the unit of “Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities.”

Students will be learning to describe and identify their own relationships and responsibilities

within school and their community.
