An examination of Shabir Ally’s fascination with pigs

Shabir Ally has written an article where he seeks to prove that Christians must refrain from eating pork. Yet, in order to prove his point, Shabir needs to conceal information and quote passages out of their intended contexts. Due to Shabir’s faulty hermeneutic and methodology, we are not surprised to find him drawing erroneous conclusions and wrong inferences from the biblical text.Shabir writes:Both the Bible and the Qur’an prohibit the eating of pork. Muslims are ware [sic] of this prohibition and observe it strictly. However, most readers of the Bible say they do not know where they can find this in the Bible.RESPONSE:Shabir generalizes and states that the "Bible" prohibits the eating of pork. It is quite correct to use the term "Bible" in reference to a specific book or sections of the revelation. Yet, in the case of eating pork, it is only A SPECIFIC SECTION of the Holy Bible that forbids it. This means that we need to be more careful and use our terms more accurately in order to avoid giving a false and misleading impression that the Bible AS A WHOLE prohibits pig meat.A careful reading of the entire Bible leads us to conclude that this prohibition was intended for a specific group of people. It wasn’t intended FOR ALL PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES. More on this below.For some unknown reason, Shabir feels it necessary to mention the ignorance of the majority of the readers of the Bible. It is equivalent to someone mentioning the ignorance of the majority of Muslims regarding the Islamic command to observe circumcision, or the five daily prayers. Many, if not most, Muslims do not know where the Quran commands circumcision and five daily prayers. In fact, we don't blame Muslims for being both ignorant of and unable to locate these commands SINCE THEY ARE NOT MENTIONED IN THE QURAN!

Shabir:In the book of Leviticus, chapter 11, v. 7, it is recorded that God declares the pig to be unclean for believers. Then, in verse 8, God says: "You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you". This command is repeated in Deuteronomy 14:7-8. Then, in Isaiah 65:2-4, and 66:17, God issues a stern warning against those who eat pork.RESPONSE:Interestingly, Shabir chooses to focus only on the prohibition of swine, while failing to mention what immediately precedes Leviticus 11:"The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Say to the Israelites: "Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud. There are some that only chew the cud or only have a split hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you."’" Leviticus 11:1-4Even though Shabir alludes to Deuteronomy he fails to make reference to its immediate context:"Do not eat any detestable thing. These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. You may eat any animal that has a split hoof divided in two and that chews the cud. However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. Although

they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you." Deuteronomy 14:3-7The reader may be wondering what relevance does the prohibition of camel meat have on our current discussion. Simply this, the Quran permits Muslims to eat and sacrifice camels as the following passages show:"Of the cattle are some for burden and some for meat: eat what Allah hath provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of Satan: for he is to you and avowed enemy. (Take) eight (head of cattle) in (four) pairs: of sheep a pair, and of goats a pair; say, hath He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or (the young) which the wombs of the two females enclose? Tell me with knowledge if ye are truthful:

Of camels a pair, and of oxen a pair; say, hath He forbidden the two males, or the two females, or (the young) which the wombs of the two females enclose? - Were ye present when Allah ordered you such a thing? But who doth more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah, to lead astray men without knowledge? For Allah guideth not people who do wrong. Say: 'I find not in the Message received by me by inspiration any (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine,- for it is an abomination - or, what is impious, (meat) on which a name has been invoked, other than Allah's'. But (even so), if a person is forced by necessity, without willful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, thy Lord is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. For those who followed the Jewish Law, We forbade every (animal) with undivided hoof, and We forbade them that fat of the ox and the sheep, except what adheres to their backs or their entrails, or is mixed up with a bone: this in recompense for their willful disobedience: for We are True (in Our ordinances). If they accuse thee of falsehood, say: "Your Lord is full of mercy all- embracing; but from people in guilt never will His wrath be turned back." S. 6:142-147"The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the signs from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat ye thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that ye may be grateful." S. 22:36The ahadith state:Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle offered four Rakat of Zuhr prayer at Medina and we were in his company, and two Rakat of the Asr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa and then passed the night there till it was dawn; then he rode, and when he reached Al-Baida', he praised and glorified Allah and said Takbir (i.e. Alhamdu-lillah and Subhanallah (1) and Allahu-Akbar). Then he and the people along with him recited Talbiya with the intention of performing Hajj and Umra. When we reached (Mecca) he ordered us to finish the lhram (after performing the Umra) (only those who had no Hadi (animal for sacrifice) with them were asked to do so) till the day of Tarwiya that is 8th Dhul-Hijja when they assumed Ihram for Hajj. The Prophet sacrificed many camels (slaughtering them) with his own hands while standing. While Allah's Apostle was in Medina he sacrificed two horned rams black and white in color in the Name of Allah." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 26, Number 623)Narrated 'Ali:The Prophet sent me to supervise the (slaughtering of) Budn (Hadi camels) and ordered me to distribute their meat, and then he ordered me to distribute their covering sheets and skins. 'Ali added, "The Prophet ordered me to supervise the slaughtering (of the Budn) and not to give anything (of their bodies) to the butcher as wages for slaughtering." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 26, Number 774)Yahweh forbids camel meat, whereas Allah permits it and accepts it as a sacrifice.Furthermore, the Torah also forbids certain types of water creatures, specifically those that do not have fins and scales (Leviticus 11:9-12; Deuteronomy 14:9-10). Islam, on the other hand, claims that ALL water creatures are permissible!Lawful to you is all water-game, and what the sea brings forth, as a provision for you [who are settled] as well as for travellers, although you are forbidden to hunt on land while you are in the state of pilgrimage. And be conscious of God, unto whom you shall be gathered. S. 5:96 Muhammad AsadIt is He Who has made the sea subject, that ye may eat thereof flesh that is fresh and tender, and that ye may extract therefrom ornaments to wear; and thou seest the ships therein that plough the waves, that ye may seek (thus) of the bounty of Allah and that ye may be grateful. S. 16:14Imam Malik records:Yahya related to me from Malik from Safwan ibn Sulaym from Said ibn Salama of the Bani Azraq from al-Mughira ibn Abi Burda of the tribe of Bani Abd ad-Dar that he had heard Abu Hurayra speak about a man who came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, "Messenger of Allah! We travel by sea and we do not carry much fresh water with us so if we do wudu with it we go thirsty. Can we do wudu with seawater?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied, "Its water is pure, and its dead creatures are halal." (Malik’s Muwatta, Book 2, Number 2.3.12)Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Hurayra asked Abdullah ibn Umar about eating what was cast up by the sea and he forbade him to eat it. Then Abdullah turned and asked for a Qur'an, and read, "The game of the sea and its flesh are halal for you." Nafi added, "Abdullah ibn Umar

sent me to Abdar-Rahman Ibn Abi Hurayra to say that there was no harm in eating it." (Malik’s Muwatta, Book 25, Number 25.3.9)Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman that some people from al-Jar came to Marwan ibn al-Hakam and asked him about eating what was cast up by the sea. He said, "There is no harm in eating it." Marwan said, "Go to Zayd ibn Thabit and Abu Hurayra and ask them about it, then come to me and tell me what they say." They went to them and asked them, and they both said, "There is no harm in eating it." They returned to Marwan and told him. Marwan said, "I told you."Malik said that there was no harm in eating fish caught by magians, because the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "In the sea's water is purity, and that which is dead in it is halal. "Malik said, "If it is eaten when it is dead, there is no harm in who catches it." (Malik’s Muwatta, Book 25, Number 25.3.12)Finally, Shabir alludes to Isaiah’s references to pig meat but fails to read Isaiah in context, since Isaiah also wrote:"This is what the LORD says: ‘Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, the man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.

Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the LORD say, "The LORD will surely exclude me from his people." And let not any eunuch complain, "I am only a dry tree."’ For this is what the LORD says: ‘To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant- to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off. And foreigners who bind themselves to the LORD to serve him, to love the name of the LORD, and to worship him, all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and who hold fast to my covenant - these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.’ The Sovereign LORD declares - he who gathers the exiles of Israel: ‘I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered.’" Isaiah 56:1-8"‘If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.’ The mouth of the LORD has spoken." Isaiah 58:13-14God promises to bless all those who observe the Sabbath. Isaiah is simply reiterating the following commands of the Torah:"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11"Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites, "You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed."’" Exodus 31:12-17"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day." Deuteronomy 5:12-15The seriousness of Sabbath observance can be seen from the fact that all who were caught willfully violating the Sabbath were put to death:"‘But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien, blasphemes the LORD, and that person must be cut off from his people. Because he has despised the LORD's word and broken his commands, that person must surely be cut off; his guilt remains on him.’ While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.’ So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses." Numbers 15:30-36

The following question naturally arises: does Islam make it obligatory to keep Yahweh’s Sabbaths? Does a Muslim have to observe the Sabbath day as commanded in both the Torah and Isaiah? The answer is a resounding NO!The following example is another instance where the Quran contradicts the true word of God, the Torah:"If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance." Deuteronomy 24:1-4Compare:"A divorce is only permissible twice: after that, the parties should either hold together on equitable terms, or separate with kindness. It is not lawful for you, (men), to take back any of your gifts (from your wives), except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah. If ye (judges) do indeed fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah, there is no blame on either of them if she give something for her freedom. These are the limits ordained by Allah. So do not transgress them if any do transgress the limits ordained by Allah, such persons wrong (themselves as well as others). So if a husband divorces his wife (irrevocably), he cannot, after that, re- marry her until after she has married another husband and he has divorced her. In that case there is no blame on either of them if they re-unite, provided they feel that they can keep the limits ordained by Allah. Such are the limits ordained by Allah, which He makes plain to those who understand." S. 2:229-230What Yahweh calls shameful and detestable, Allah calls permissible!

In light of the preceding, we wonder why Shabir chose to focus on one specific point of commonality between the Torah and the Quran, while failing to mention all the major differences and contradictions between the two Books? Could it be that Shabir realizes that by showing how the Quran contradicts the preceding Mosaic injunctions, Shabir would be forced to apply his own methodology consistently and reject Muhammad as a Law-breaker? Or would Shabir admit that these Mosaic Laws were only applicable at that time and are no longer binding upon believers today? If Shabir opts for the latter, then his argument against Paul and Christians regarding pig meat crumbles from beneath him. A careful examination of Shabir’s arguments show that, for the most part, they often have little, if any, substance behind them.

*Shabir continues with these claims:Some people are aware of this prohibition from God, but they say that they can eat pork because St. Paul said that all food is clean in his letter to the Romans 14:20. St. Paul said this because he believed (as he wrote in his letter to the Ephesians 2:14-15) that Jesus had abolished the Law with all its commandments and regulations. He seems, however, to have misunderstood what he heard about Jesus. In the Gospel According to Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus is reported to have said quite the contrary, as follows: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law . . . ." Jesus then went on in that passage (in verse 19) to denounce anyone who would break the smallest commandment and teach others likewise. He also praised his true followers who will practice and teach even the smallest commandment. One of the commandments, as we have seen, is to stay away from pork.RESPONSE:Did Paul really misunderstand "what he heard about Jesus"? Or is this another instance where Shabir exposes his inability to grasp the real meaning behind Jesus' words? Shabir now thinks that by appealing to Jesus' statement on fulfilling the Law/Prophets he will somehow prove his assertion that the dietary restrictions of the Torah are still binding upon Christians. Shabir's appeal here only proves that he, unlike the beloved Apostle Paul, has no real understanding of the Holy Bible and simply quotes verses out of their intended context in the hopes of establishing the claims of his false religion.A careful reading of the context will show what Jesus actually meant by fulfilling the Law AND THE PROPHETS. Christ's statement doesn't simply mean that he came to perfectly observe the precepts of the Law. Christ's meaning in context is that he came to bring out the true meaning and intent of the ethical and moral aspects of the Law and Prophets as the following verses demonstrate:"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ BUT I TELL YOU, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one." Matthew 5:33-37"You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ BUT I TELL YOU, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him

two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you." Matthew 5:38-42The context clearly shows that the way that Christ fulfilled the Law and Prophets is by exegeting the ethical demands of the Hebrew Bible as God intended them to be exegeted. In the words of Messianic Jewish Scholar, David H. Stern:"It is true that Yeshua (Jesus) kept the Torah perfectly and fulfilled predictions of the Prophets, but that is not the point here. Yeshua did not come to abolish but ‘to make full’ (plerosai) the meaning of what the Torah and the ethical demands of the Prophets require. Thus he came to complete our understanding of the Torah and the Prophets, so that we can try to more effectively be and do what they say to be and do ... The remainder of chapter 5 gives six specific cases in which Yeshua explains the fuller spiritual meaning of points in the Jewish Law. In fact, this verse states the theme and agenda of the entire Sermon on the Mount, in which Yeshua completes, makes fuller, the understanding of his talmidim (students) concerning the Torah and the Prophets, so that they can more fully express what being God's people is all about." (Stern, Jewish New Testament Commentary [Clarksville, Maryland; Jewish New Testament Publications, 1996], pp. 25-26; underlined emphasis ours)Further support for Stern's claim can be seen from Jesus' concluding remarks in his Sermon on the Mount, as well as his final parting comments before his ascension:"Therefore everyone who hears THESE WORDS OF MINE and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears THESE WORDS OF MINE and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." Matthew 7:24-27"Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’" Matthew 28:18-20Jesus doesn't tell his disciples to pass on Moses' commandments, but rather to pass on the commands he had personally taught them.

Christ also completed the Law by fulfilling the predictions made about him:"All this took place to FULFILL ( plerothe ) what the Lord had said through THE PROPHET : ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ - which means, ‘God with us.’ Matthew 1:22-23"When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was FULFILLED ( plerothe ) what the Lord had said through THE PROPHET : ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’" Matthew 2:13-15"After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead.’ So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was FULFILLED ( plerothe ) what was said through THE PROPHETS : ‘He will be called a Nazarene.’" Matthew 2:19-23"Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. ‘Put your sword back in its place,’ Jesus said to him, ‘for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be FULFILLED ( plerothosin ) that say it must happen in this way? ’ At that time Jesus said to the crowd, ‘Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. But this has all taken place that the writings OF THE PROPHETS might be FULFILLED ( plerothosin ) .’ Then all the disciples deserted him and fled." Matthew 26:51-56"He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: "And he was numbered with the transgressors"; and I tell you that this MUST BE FULFILLED ( telesthenai ) IN ME. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its FULFILLMENT ( telos ) .’" Luke 22:36-37"Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you - that everything written about me in THE LAW of Moses, THE PROPHETS, and the psalms must be FULFILLED ( plerotheenai ) .’" Luke 24:44As one can see, the word Matthew uses, fulfill (plerosai, coming from the verb pleroo), is used elsewhere in reference to Christ's fulfillment of OT prophecies.The Blue Letter online Greek lexicon notes:Strong's # 4137: pleroo {play-ro'-o}

1) to make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full a) to cause to abound, to furnish or supply liberally 1) I abound, I am liberally supplied 2) to render full, i.e. to complete a) to fill to the top: so that nothing shall be wanting to full measure, fill to the brimb) to consummate: a number 1) to make complete in every particular, to render perfect2) to carry through to the end, to accomplish, carry out, (some undertaking) c) to carry into effect, bring to realisation, realise 1) of matters of duty: to perform, execute2) of sayings, promises, prophecies, to bring to pass, ratify, accomplish3) to fulfil, i.e. to cause God's will (as made known in the law) to be obeyed AS IT SHOULD BE, and God's PROMISES (GIVEN THROUGH THE PROPHETS) to receive fulfilment (Source: Blue Letter Bible)The Apostle Paul beautifully sums this all up:"For being ignorant of the righteousness that God ascribes (which makes one acceptable to Him in word, thought and deed), and seeking to establish a righteousness (a means of salvation) of their own, they did not obey or submit themselves to God's righteousness. For Christ is THE END (telos) of the Law - the limit at which it ceases to be, for the Law leads up to Him Who is the fulfillment of its types, and in Him the purpose in which it was designed to accomplish is fulfilled. - That is, the purpose of the Law is fulfilled in Him - as the means of righteousness (right relationship to God) for everyone who trusts in and adheres to and relies on Him." Romans 10:3-4 Amplified BibleIn light of the preceding contextual factors, we can see what Jesus meant in context. The Law which believers are to follow is the Law that Christ taught and defined through his life, teachings, death and resurrection.What is most amazing about all this is that the Quran claims that Christ came to make lawful that which was unlawful in the Torah:"(I have come to you), to attest to the Law which was before me and to make lawful to you part of what was (before) forbidden to you ..." S. 3:50The following quotations are taken from Mahmoud M Ayoub's book, The Quran and Its Interpreters, Volume II, The House of Imran, State University of New York Press, Albany 1992. All bold and capital emphasis ours:"Tabari reports on the authority of Wahb bin Munabbih that ‘Jesus was a follower of the law of Moses. He observed the Sabbath and faced Jerusalem in prayer. He said to the Children of Israel, "I have not come to call you to disobey even one word of the Torah. I have come only to make lawful for you some of the things which were before unlawful and to relieve you of some of the hardships [which the Torah imposed on you]."’

Qatadah, according to Tabari, is said to have declared: ‘The [Law] with which Jesus came was much more lenient than that which Moses brought. The Law of Moses made unlawful for them to eat the flesh of camel, the fat covering the stomach of an animal, and some birds and fish’...Ibn Kathir interprets the phrase ‘and will make lawful for you some of the things which were before unlawful’ as indicating that Jesus did indeed abrogate some of the precepts of the Torah. Nevertheless, he reports that some scholars have argued that Jesus did not abrogate anything, but only made lawful for the Children of Israel some of the things concerning which they had disagreed. Ibn Kathir, however, prefers the first view...Razi then raises the following question: ‘It may be argued that latter statement contradicts the one before it. This is because it clearly indicates that he came to make lawful some of the things which were unlawful in the Torah. This would mean that his legislation was contrary to that of the Torah, which would contradict his saying, "I shall confirm the Torah which was before me."’ Razi, however, holds that ‘there is actually no contradiction between the two statements because confirming the Torah can only signify the belief that all that is in it is true and right. If, moreover, the second purpose [of Jesus' apostleship] is not mentioned in the Torah, his making lawful some of the things which are unlawful in it would not contradict his having confirmed the Torah. Furthermore, since the Torah contains prophesies concerning the coming of Jesus, then neither his coming nor HIS LAW would be contrary to the Torah.’Razi then reports the different views concerning what Jesus made lawful for the Children of Israel. He mentions that Wahb b. Munabbih interpreted this statement as first referring to the rabbis ‘who had invented some false laws which they ascribed to Moses. But when Jesus came, he abolished these laws, and thus matters reverted to what they were during the time of Moses.’ Razi also attributed to Wahb the view that ‘God had made some things unlawful for the Jews as a punishment for the transgressions which they had committed, as God says, "because of the wrongdoing which the Jews committed, We made unlawful some of the good things which were before lawful for them" (Q. 4:160). This prohibition remained until Jesus came and lifted these restrictions from them.’ Razi gives by way of example what Jesus altered in the laws of the Torah, his substituting Sunday for the Sabbath as a day of rest...

Qummi briefly comments that the things which Jesus made lawful for the Children of Israel included work on the Sabbath, and eating such fats and birds which were before unlawful ..." (Ayoub, pp. 149-150)"... Qutb says: ‘The Torah was, like the Gospel, the scripture of Jesus, that is, the foundation of the religion which he came. The Gospel is intended to COMPLETE AND REVIVE THE SPIRIT OF THE TORAH and the spirit of faith which was obscured in the hearts of the Children of Israel. The Torah is the foundation of the religion of Christ and contains the law (shari'ah) on which the social order is based. The Gospel makes only slight modifications in the Torah, but it is a breath and renewal of the spirit of religion. It acts as a source of discipline for human conscience by bringing it into direct contact with God ...’"... ‘By Saying, "I shall confirm the Torah that was sent before me" Jesus discloses the nature of true Christianity.’ Qutb argues that the Torah was essential to the message of Jesus, but his message introduced certain minor modifications to it. Jesus made lawful some of the things which God had made unlawful as punishment of the Children of Israel for their sins. ‘Then God wished to show mercy towards them through Christ.’" (pp. 152-153)"... He [Razi] then presents another possible reason: ‘The Jews knew that Jesus was the messiah who was announced in the Torah, and that he was to ABROGATE their religion ...’" (p. 160)Commenting on the Jewish demand for a sacrifice and for fire from heaven to consume it in S. 3:183, Ayoub writes:"Qurtubi reports the account and adds: ‘It is reported that this [divine charge] was in the Torah but that it concluded with the words "until Christ and Muhammad shall come to you, but when they come, believe in them without a sacrifice." It also reported, Qurtubi continues, that ‘offering sacrifices was mandatory UNTIL IT WAS ABROGATED BY JESUS SON OF MARY. Before that a prophet would slaughter the sacrificial animal and pray to God. Then a white smokeless fire with a hissing sound would descend and devour the sacrifice. Hence, this was a false claim by the Jews, for [the truth is that] either it was an exception which they concealed [from the Prophet] OR A CASE OF ABROGATION WHICH THEY STUBBORNLY DENIED ...’" (p. 395)Here is what the English translation of the Tafsir of Ibn Abbas says regarding this text:(And (I come) confirming) and I have come confirming Allah's divine Oneness in the Religion (that which was before me of the Torah) and all other Scriptures, (and to make lawful) to give you legal dispensation regarding (some of that which was forbidden unto you) such as the meat of camels, the fat of bovines and sheep, the Sabbath, and other things. (I come unto you with a sign) with a token (from your Lord, so keep your duty to Allah) so fear Allah in that which He has commanded you with and repent to Him (and obey me) and follow my command and Religion; (online source; bold and underline emphasis ours)The Tafsir al-Jalalayn states that:Likewise, I have come to you, confirming that which was before me of the Torah, and to make lawful for you some of that which was forbidden to you, in it. Thus he made lawful for them fish and birds which had no spikes; it is also said that he made it all lawful for them, so that ba'd, 'some', means, kull, 'all'). I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, He has repeated it for emphasis and to expand upon it: so fear God, and obey me, in what I command you of affirming God's Oneness and being obedient to Him. (Online source; bold and underline emphasis ours)It is clear that both the Quran and these Muslim commentators agree that the Lord Jesus made lawful certain things that were forbidden in the Law such as certain dietary restrictions.It becomes quite apparent that Shabir's appeal to Matthew 5:17-20 is misplaced since it does nothing to support his erroneous exegesis. Shabir has shown that he hasn't studied either the Holy Bible or the Quran carefully, since if he had he wouldn't have made such gross blunders in his exegesis.

*Shabir writes:This is why the true followers of Jesus, holding on to his teachings, did not let unclean food such as pork enter their mouths, so that Peter, the chief disciple, can say, "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean" (Acts of the Apostles, ch. 10, v. 14)RESPONSE:Before responding specifically to Shabir’s misquotes, some preliminary comments are in order. The NT teaches that Christ declared all foods clean:"‘Are you so dull?’ he asked. ‘Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him "unclean"? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.’ (In saying this Jesus declared all foods ‘clean.’) He went on: ‘What comes out of a man is what makes him "unclean." For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man "unclean."’" Mark 7:18-23Mark gives us an inspired commentary regarding Jesus’ statement on food not defiling a person, as well as giving us a glimpse at how the first Christians understood Jesus’ statement. The Christians understood Jesus as stating that all foods were now essentially clean, with the implication being that a person was no longer bound to follow the dietary restrictions of the Mosaic Law.

However, this applies specifically to Gentile believers, Mark’s intended audience. It is evident from other passages of the NT that Jewish believers were still required to maintain many aspects of the Mosaic Law, such as the dietary rules, yet not for their salvation but as a means of their sanctification.With that just said, we now turn to Acts 10:"About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’ ‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied. I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.’ The voice spoke to him a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ This happened THREE TIMES, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate. They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, ‘Simon, THREE MEN are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.’ Peter went down and said to the men, ‘I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?’ The men replied, ‘We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.’ Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests… Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. He said to them: ‘You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call ANY MAN IMPURE OR UNCLEAN. So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?’… Then Peter began to speak: ‘I NOW REALIZE how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right.’" Acts 10:9-23, 27-29, 34-35It is quite evident that this passage does nothing to support Shabir’s assertions. If anything, this proves that God has made all foods clean and permissible for consumption! Yet, the context makes it clear that Peter’s vision had little do with the permissibility of consuming clean and unclean animals. The animals actually symbolized the relationship between Jews and Gentiles. God was now entering into covenant relations with the Gentiles, which meant that the Jews could no longer consider them ritually impure or unclean. Peter’s own comments show that this is precisely how he understood the vision. This is further reiterated by the Jewish reaction to Peter’s visit with a Gentile:"The apostles and the brothers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers CRITICIZED him and said, ‘You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.’ Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened: ‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision… The voice spoke from heaven a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." This happened THREE TIMES, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again. Right then THREE MEN who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, "Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved." As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." So if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, WHO BELIEVED IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, who was I to think that I could oppose God?’ When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, ‘So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.’" Acts 11:1-5a, 9-18

Shabir continues to misquote scripture:Five chapters later in the Acts of the Apostles, 15:29, we find that the original disciples still differentiate between clean and unclean foods, and this time Paul is in agreement with them.

Six chapters later, in ch. 21, v. 25, their decision to impose food regulations on believers is mentioned without regret, and this time Paul is challenged to prove that he is in agreement with them; and he demonstrated his full agreement with them.RESPONSE:Shabir again fails to quote the context, but simply mentions the verses in passing. The most amazing thing about all this is that a careful reading of these passages actually results in a resounding refutation of Shabir, exposing his gross misreading of the text!:"Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: ‘Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.’ This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. The church sent them on their way, and as they traveled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the brothers very glad. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them. Then some of the

believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, ‘The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to obey the law of Moses.’ The apostles and elders met to consider this question. After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: ‘Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts BY FAITH. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples A YOKE THAT NEITHER WE NOR OUR FATHERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BEAR? No! We believe it is THROUGH THE GRACE OF OUR LORD JESUS THAT WE ARE SAVED, JUST AS THEY ARE.’ The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. When they finished, James spoke up: ‘Brothers, listen to me ... It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath’ ... Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers. With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul - men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell." Acts 15:1-13, 19-29Several comments are in order. First, do notice that Peter clearly says that both Jews and Gentiles are saved solely by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, not by observing the Law. Peter also calls the Law a yoke that neither the Gentiles nor the Jews could bear. This affirms my earlier point, namely, that the Jewish believers in Jesus weren’t obligated to observe the Law as a means of obtaining salvation, since they knew they were saved by grace through faith. Rather, they observed the Law as a means of living holy lives devoted to God.Second, even though the Jews were observing the Law of Moses Gentiles were not under any obligation to do so. This is reiterated in the following passage:"The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. Paul greeted them and reported in detail what God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry. When they heard this, THEY PRAISED GOD. Then they said to Paul: ‘You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. They have been informed that you teach ALL THE JEWS who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everybody will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. AS FOR THE GENTILE BELIEVERS, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.’ The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them." Acts 21:18-26Again, nothing in this passage supports Shabir’s claim that Gentile Christians are obligated to observe the Mosaic dietary restrictions in general or the prohibition to eat pork in particular. Nor does this passage imply that Jews were required to observe the Law of Moses for their salvation.This leads us to our third point, namely, Shabir’s gross misrepresentations and implicit assault on the beloved Apostle Paul. Shabir claims that in Acts 21 Paul was challenged to show his compliance to the food regulations imposed on believers. This gives the misleading impression that the Gentile believers were required to follow the dietary restrictions of the Torah. Yet, as we just saw, THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT GENTILES NEEDING TO BE TORAH OBSERVANT! The context refers to Jews who were falsely accusing Paul of teaching that JEWS living amongst the Gentiles didn’t need to circumcise their children or observe Jewish customs. This was clearly a lie since Paul himself faithfully observed Jewish customs, as well as making sure that others who were Jews observed them:

"He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek." Acts 16:1-3"Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because of a vow he had taken." Acts 18:18Paul, in agreement with the rest of the Apostles, taught that GENTILES didn’t need to observe the Mosaic injunctions regarding circumcision, food regulations, ceremonies, Sabbaths etc.

Again, we need to reiterate that the Jews were not required to observe the Mosaic Law for salvation. They followed it as a means of living out a holy and obedient life to the God who had saved them freely and perfectly through their faith in the risen Lord and eternal Savior Jesus Christ.

Shabir concludes:What remains, then, is that Jesus, on whom be peace, upheld the prohibition against pork. His disciples also upheld it, and so must all his followers. Those who fail to uphold it need to be informed and reminded of this rule from God. This is one reason why God sent His final messenger, on whom be peace. God says:"O people of the Scripture! Now has Our Messenger come unto you, expounding unto you much of that which you used to hide in the Scripture, and forgiving much. Now has come unto you light from Allah and a plain Scripture." (The Meaning of the Glorious Qur’an 5:15).RESPONSE:Contrary to Shabir’s erroneous assertion, this article has demonstrated that neither the Lord Jesus nor his followers required Gentile believers to uphold the prohibition against pork. Jewish believers followed dietary restrictions solely because this was the way God had decreed for them to work out their personal holiness now that they had been given salvation through their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ:"Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone WHO BELIEVES is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses." Acts 13:38-39Second, we have also shown that Shabir’s own book claims that the Lord Jesus made lawful some of the forbidden things of the Law. Yet, Muhammad contradicts this by prohibiting what Christ made lawful! Muhammad also broke the dietary prohibitions of the Law, as well as other Mosaic injunctions, which demonstrates that Muhammad was a lawbreaker.These are some of the many reasons why Christians reject Muhammad. Since he contradicted the true and pure message of the true prophets of God, he was therefore a false prophet. In light of this, Shabir’s claim that God is the One speaking in the Quran is a lie since the Quran is not the word of the true God.We advise Shabir to follow the advice of his own book, which says:And if thou (Muhammad) art in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto thee, then question those who read the Scripture (that was) before thee. Verily the Truth from thy Lord hath come unto thee. So be not thou of the waverers. S. 10:94 PickthallMuhammad himself did not listen to this command, and for him it is too late now. Shabir still has the option to start listening and asking. Once Shabir does this, he will have no choice but to reject Muhammad and embrace Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior:"Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’" John 14:6"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." Acts 4:12"That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." Romans 10:9-10
