All families and parish members are invited to find a place in Church. With back to back Masses, there will not be a reception following the liturgy.

11. Celebrate and Reflect May 5th from 7-8:45pm in the Pavilion! After receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, come celebrate, reflect on our experiences with others and rejoice in God’s gifts!

Confirmation Confirms what we are given in Baptism

“Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for the Spirit had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 8:14-16

Our faith journey begins at Baptism, when God comes to indwell in our souls through His Sanctifying Grace! This Grace makes us members of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, children of the Most High God and heirs to the Kingdom! Wow! That is Good News! But, faith needs to be nurtured. To feed our faith, Christ gives us His WORD and His Real Presence in the Most Holy Eucharist at each Mass! In Confirmation, we renew the promises of our Baptism and are sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us extra powers to live out our faith and be a witness to Jesus despite peer pressure. Through Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation–we become fully incorporated into the Church. Confirmation begins our adult, lifelong process of growing as Members of the Body of Christ.

Confirmation Mass Dress CodeConfirmation and Sponsor attire should reflect the solemn nature of our celebration. Specifically, our young

ladies' shoulders should be covered. Dresses with straps should be worn with a sweater or wrap. The dress choice needs to be of a modest style, in neckline and length (please, no revealing necklines and no more than 3 inches above the knee). Shoes should have backs on them so that walking up or down stairs and aisles will be safe, easy, and comfortable. Our young gentlemen are expected to wear a dress shirt, a tie, dress slacks, and preferably a sport coat or suit coat. Dress shoes only. Young men are not to wear athletic shoes.

Pick Up and Drop Off Procedure For all Prep SessionsThe safety of your child is very important to us. Parents, whose last name begins A-L, please enter the West Lot

and form a pick-up line in front of the school and church. As students come out of church, they can find and enter their cars without crossing into the parking lane or the parking lot. Granted, there won’t be enough space for all the cars in the line at once, so those arriving once the line is formed will need to park in the lot to get off Beechmont Avenue. As the lines moves forward, the parked cars can then get in line. You can then exit the lot at the light at Arby’s.

For those parents whose last name begins M-Z, please enter the East Lot, drive back to the back parking lot and back into a parking space to wait for your child. You can then either exit the lot and turn right onto Beechmont or go through the shopping mall and exit at the light to turn left onto Beechmont. Thank you for your patience as we make sure all the students get back to their cars safely!

Sunday Mass Participation is Essential for Confirmation Confirmation marks your child's full and mature participation as a disciple of Christ, who continues Jesus’ mission to save souls. During Mass, we join our sacrifices with Christ at the offertory, which allows God to give graces to those souls who do not ask for graces on their own, and who need grace to choose good over evil. God needs our every sacrifice, prayer and surrender to His Will in order to get the graces needed to change people’s hearts. We glorify God when we attend Mass, and we work with Christ to save souls and change the future. Our youth preparing for Confirmation MUST attend Mass regularly, in order to learn what it is to be a disciple and pick up their cross. If transportation is, or could be an issue, please let the Formation Office know and we will be happy to assist in finding transportation.

Participation in this program is one way we assess if your child is ready for the Sacrament of Confirmation. If your child is not ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at this time, we encourage him/her to attend the sessions as a way to continue developing their relationship with Jesus. They can always receive Confirmation through our High School Track. Individual instruction is also available where needed. Please call the Formation Office to arrange this.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Youth Office 333-4185 [email protected] or Formation Office (513) 388-4189 [email protected] if you have any questions. The Formation Team is here to help and support you as parents, and to

continue to expand on the wonderful example you’ve set for your children. Please complete and return the permission forms on the last 3 pages to register your child for Confirmation. Thank you for enrolling your child in the Confirmation Prep Program. We look forward to a great year!

About Our Confirmation Program

The Mission The Sacrament of Confirmation is the final step in a person’s full initiation into the Life and Mission of the Catholic Church that began at their Baptism. Confirmation is not the end of a process, but the beginning of adult ministry in the church and in the world. Confirmation seals those who receive it with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit for the precise duty of carrying out the Great Commission– to go and make disciples of all nations. This is the responsibility of all Catholics, especially those confirmed, to witness to Jesus Christ and the Good News of Salvation in all they do.

What do They Need? With the Church’s Mission for Confirmed Catholics in mind, we must ask a very important question: What does a young person, situated in this unique time in the history of the Church, need in order to trulyaccept this mission at their Confirmation? Often the answer is more, or better, catechesis – which to some extent is true. But just as a carpenter doesn’t learn his trade simply by studying it in a book or listening to a lecture, better catechesis cannot be the sole factor if our young people are going to accept a lifelong mission of Discipleship. More than just being taught, our young people need to be apprenticed in the life of discipleship in such a way that they come to a deep knowledge and love for Jesus, and are equipped to pursue Him in a life of transforming Faith.

Comprehensive ApproachMany Confirmation programs have good, even excellent content, but none are a comprehensive program designed specifically for IHM. This program’s approach is comprehensive not only in the methods used to directly form the Confirmands, but also in the involvement of their parents and the rest of the IHM Community. No program, no matter how good its content and experiences, is sufficient for equipping a person for a life of discipleship and evangelization. This is especially true when dealing with young people, who are still easily influenced by others, especially their parents (whether they admit it or not). To address this reality, our program incorporates IHM’s High School Youth Ministry as peer mentors, includes opportunities for parents to build their own personal faith within a community of other adults, provides resources to aid parents and sponsors, and more – with each aspect designed to meet a specific need for accepting the mission of Discipleship.

Join us for the Parent TrackDo you want to have better conversations with your children about the Catholic Faith? Do you want to learn more about your Faith and grow in your relationship with Jesus? Do you want to be more involved with the IHM Community?

The Answering the Call Confirmation parent Track has been designed especially for you! Parents and Sponsors are invited to participate in our Confirmation Sessions, where we’ve designed each evening to offer tools of support, as you accompany your child toward Confirmation. Come listen to Dynamic Speakers, discuss relevant topics and join our Confirmands in prayerful Adoration.

Parents! Please Help us out this year as a Small Group Leader!

Dear Parent, Students tell us that the Small Groups are one of the most meaningful parts of our Confirmation Prep Process. In order to make the groups small enough (6-8 students) to allow for good discussion, we need lots of Small Group Leaders to help facilitate discussion of the topic introduced at each session. Would you please consider serving as a Small Group Leader? You may choose to lead a group on your own, or with another adult. There is training available either Tuesday, October 16 or Thursday, October 18 from 6:30pm-8:30pm in the cafeteria. We also offer support for a few minutes before and after each session. This is a great way to get to know the students and help them process their faith in a rewarding way. To sign up as a Small Group Leader, just let Michael Haley know or check the box at the end of the Registration Form. Thank you for serving in this important ministry!

Parent/Sponsor Discuss with Confirmand Before Confirmation

What is the Sacrament of Confirmation? Why is it important? Do you want to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Do you know that God loves you? How?

Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who came down to Earth, suffered and died for you, and shows you the way to get to heaven?

Have you made the decision to be a disciple (follower) of Jesus, praying for His help, and seeking God’s will before making decisions?

Do you seek God’s grace in the sacraments and pray for God’s guidance and help?

Do you go to Mass weekly and really try to participate by listening carefully, singing the songs, and responding to the dialog prayers (Our Father, Holy, Holy, Holy Acclamation, Great Amen, etc.)?

Do you want to be an adult member of the Church Community, sharing your gifts with others and being helped by their gifts as well? How do you feel about your Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Community?

Are you ready to exercise your adult responsibilities to the Church Community through serving in some type of ministry in church and volunteering to serve the poor and vulnerable in the larger community? Are you ready to be a good role model for your peers and for younger children who look up to you?

Do you know that being Baptized is necessary before receiving Confirmation? At Baptism, the gift of the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside you, making you holy, and making you a child of God. What more does Confirmation give?

Are you planning to continue devoting time to developing your relationship with Jesus by engaging in High School Youth Ministry events in the fall?

Have you prepared for Confirmation by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to Confirmation?

Saint Name and Paper due back January 27, 2019

For Confirmation, you get the opportunity to choose a new name! When God invited Abram into a new covenant with Him, God changed his name to Abraham to show his life would now change. At Confirmation, you are promising to become an adult disciple of Jesus. This is a change for you and you may choose a saint name to show you are a changed person, and to have a special saint friend to intercede for you in Heaven!

Choosing your Confirmation Name: The choice of your Saint (and thus your Confirmation Name) is to be someone worth imitating because of their life of holiness. They possess virtues that you admire and would like to achieve: charity, constant pursuit of what is good, choosing rightly, self-control, etc. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and then do some research on the Saints. You might look to see what Saint Feast Day falls on your birthday, or what Saint is the Patron of a hobby of yours or a career you might like to pursue. Check out the Saint stories! They’re fascinating!

Once you have decided: Ask your Saint for guidance. Pray daily to them to help you to live a life of Holiness, as they did. Ask them to intercede on your behalf – that your Sacrament of Confirmation will be “well-received.”

Finally, the Saint Paper: Please tell us the highlights of the life of the saint you chose, in about half a page. Here is an example of a Saint Paper on St. Francis by Bill Meelader

My saint is Saint Francis of Assisi. I choose Saint Francis because he is a really nice and helpful to animals and I love animals. I like Saint Francis is because in 5th grade I did a project on him and learned all about him like how he was born in Assisi, Italy and that he is the patron of animals. Some other things that make him stand out to me is when he went to war and God told him to go back home. Saint Francis did as God told him to and was punished by his father. Francis did not care because God told him things will be ok. That is really cool because people sometimes hear the voice of God and think it is stupid and ignore it, but Francis he did as he was told.Another thing is Francis kissed a man then the man vanished. I believe that was a test from God. Also, Francis' conversion did not happen overnight. God waited for him for twenty-five years and now it was Francis' turn to wait. Francis started to spend more time in prayer. He went off to a cave and wept for his sins. Sometimes God's Grace overwhelmed him with joy. But life couldn't just stop for God. There was a business to run, customers to wait on. It is amazing that he was able to wait because most people, including myself, can’t be patient.

I hope to someday hear the voice of God the same way Saint Francis did and to learn that God does not always answer you right away. It is important to be patient in God’s word.

Service Reflection Paper Name__________________________ Due 3/31/19As you are learning about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and learning to recognize God’s small still voice within you, being aware of your feelings is a helpful tool. These reflection questions are designed to help you identify the work of the Holy Spirit within you. Please complete this form and go over it with your Sponsor or Parent.

1. In Liturgical Ministry, I chose to serve as a _______________________________________________.a. Before going, as I was getting ready to go, I felt __________________. I felt this way because

It may be inconvenient or take time you’d rather be doing something else. We may sense negative thoughts like, “Why are they making me do this? This is a stupid.” These negative thoughts may be coming from the evil one to hinder your good work or discourage you from doing something good for your soul. It is helpful to be aware of your thoughts and feelings and try to discern with an adult where these thoughts and feelings are coming from.)

Confirmand’s Letter to Their Sponsor and to Bishop Joseph Binzer. Please give one copy to Your Sponsor and return one copy by January 27, 2019.

The purpose of this letter is to let your Sponsor know if you are ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. One of your Sponsor’s roles is to present you to the Bishop to be Confirmed. The Bishop is responsible for administering the Sacrament, but the Bishop cannot meet with everyone to make sure they are ready for this Sacrament This is why the letter is addressed to your Sponsor, who will recommend you to the Bishop as someone ready to receive Confirmation.

In prepping for Confirmation and in being Confirmed, we are asking the Confirmand to profess their Faith, to be in a state of Grace, to willingly receive the Sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of a disciple and a witness to Christ, within the Parish Community, and their community at large. They should be able to express “What is the Sacrament of Confirmation and why is it important? Why do I want to be Confirmed?” and “How I plan to live out the Sacrament.”

Here is a format for your Letter to the Sponsor.
