    19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The context of the Gospel today is the miracle of multiplication of the bread and fish. It is clear that after this miracle there remained many things yet to be understood.

Many of those who shared this miracle did not understand things in the proper way. Je-sus noticed that. Jesus’ first reaction is to go alone and spend the night in prayer.

We could think about the many questions that passed through Jesus’ head: Why is it so difficult for his disciples to understand the fact of communion among themselves? Why they didn’t understand that we have to share? Why is so difficult to understand that we have to cre-ate fraternity? Why is it that we react when Jesus speaks about caring for the poor?

Through the miracle of the multiplication of the bread Jesus teaches us that it is possible to change our selfish mentality. Yes, and it is only through a different mentality that we can continue making this miracle today.

Jesus urges us to change and be different and this change starts when we are able to sit on the grass of our own reality and nothingness and start sharing at the table of fraternity with our brothers and sisters of the human race without creating any difference and barrier. We have to know that Jesus accompanies us. He is not a ghost. He is real!

    God Bless you, Dios los Bendiga;

    FR. JESUS SILVA-ORTEGA

Governor Gavin Newsom announced updated Directives for 30 counties in California due to an increase in coronavirus related deaths and hospitalizations. All three counties in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles—Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara—are in-cluded in the Directives. According to the Governor and the Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura County Public Health Offices, our parishes must discontinue indoor Masses and other liturgical services, ef-fective immediately. Outdoor Masses and other liturgical services such as adoration and prayer services are allowed and encouraged. Parishes may continue to celebrate Confessions, First Communions, Confir-mations, Funerals, and Weddings outdoors on the parish grounds. Parishioners must wear face coverings and practice social distancing, even outdoors.

During this Coronavirus pandemic, many are tempted to fear, anxiety and perhaps even despair. Some have lost their precious lives, some have lost those whom they love, some have suffered through the debilitating effects of this illness, some have lost their jobs, their income, and most have encountered much disruption to the normal flow of their daily lives. Every crisis in life is also an opportunity to turn to our beloved Savior in trust and complete abandonment so as to rest in His merciful hands. To rest in the hands of God means we are secure, despite the uncertainty of life. It means we are free to love God and others, de-spite the challenges we face. It means we raise our eyes to Heaven, rather than look down in fear.

Most Merciful and Triune God, We come to You in our weakness.

We come to You in our fear. We come to You with trust. For You alone are our hope.

We place before You the disease present in our world.

We turn to You in our time of need. Bring wisdom to doctors.

Give understanding to scientists. Endow caregivers with compassion and

generosity. Bring healing to those who are ill. Protect those who are most at risk.

Give comfort to those who have lost a loved one.

Welcome those who have died into Your Eternal Home.

Stabilize our communities. Unite us in our compassion.

Remove all fear from our hearts. Fill us with confidence in your care.

Jesus, I trust in You. Jesus, I trust in You. Jesus, I trust in You.

    Amen.

Did you know? Online relationships are important, especially for teens and young people. But adults who use social media to connect with the children in their lives need to be sure that they are building appropriate relationships. Before sending a friend request, consider the “PAN” standard. While used commonly for appropriate real-life touch, in today’s increasingly virtual use, PAN is a good benchmark for online interactions. Communications should be Public, Appropriate, and Non-sexual. For more information, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Before you send a young per-son a ‘friend request’” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
