PastoralTheologyDuringtheFaithFormationConferenceonNovember4th2017attheConventionCenterinSantaClara,onekeynotespeakerwasBishopMcElroy.HistopicwasPastoralTheology:“HowdidJesusevangelize?”1.ProclaimingtheGospelwithjoy.(Thismakesalotofsensebecausethe“gospel”isreally“goodnews.”)Thebishopsaidthattherearetwoorientations:theorderofnatureandtheorderofgrace.Theorderofnatureseemstobebasedonthesurvivalofthefittest:alwaystryingtogetahead;nevergivingtheotherguyabreak;whiletheorderofgraceisaboutbeauty,forgiveness,andjoy.2.RadicalDependencyuponGod.BishopMcElroyrelatedhowsomeyearsago,hewascalledtotheCowPalacetocelebrateMassforthecircuscrowdbeforetheshowbegan.HewasnotsurewhethertheMasswaspermittedoutsidethechurch.Well,helearnedthattheCanonLawmadeprovisionsfortravellingcircuses.So,alltheparticipantsoftheMass–Lectors,ushers,serversandetc.--werecircusmemberswhowerealreadyincostume.(Itmadeaninterestingpicture.)Later,afterMass,thetrapezeartisttoldtheBishopofhisgreatdependenceontheLord.Hesaid,hisfaithhelpedhimrelease,letgoandtotrustthathiscatcherwillbegraspinghishandsattheotherendofthebigtop.(So,we,toomustletgoofourfearandtotrustthattheHolySpiritwouldhelpusevangelize.)

3.LimitlessNatureofGod’sMercy.BishopMcElroysaidthatGodwantsustobeinrelationshipwithHim.InGod’sgreatmercy,Hehascalledus“Church.”4.Rootoutjudgmentalism.Ourunderstandingofthehumansoulislimited,sowearenotinthepositiontomakejudgments.LetusleaveitalltothewisdomofGod’smercy.BishopMcElroysaidthattheChurchisaSacrament.TheChurchisalsoa“fieldhospital,”wherethedeeplywoundedarebeinghealedinthemostdifficultcircumstances.Wearethepatients.(So,donotbesosurprisedifyouhearofsomeparishionersbehavingbadly,likeus,theyareinneedofhealing.)Finally,toevangelizelikeJesuswemustcultivategoodvirtuesanddoeverythingoutoflove.
