The 41st annual LCAA wrestling championships will take place this year with anew look. Joining the wrestling league are Bath and Steuben county powerhouseHornell. These additions along with the current 14 teams insure another excitingtournament.
Five champions from 1998 return to defend their titles this season. Dan Dutton,Livonia (103), Eric Steffans, Way-Co (160), Phil Leitten, Warsaw (171), David Leitten,Warsaw (275), and Elaine Broughton, Letchworth (130) will defend against toughchallengers. Also returning to regain titles won in previous years will be Tim Page, Way-Co (112) and Kristian Alexander, LeRoy (125).
The 1998 winner LeRoy, which won the tournament on a win in the final match ofthe tournament, appears strong enough to defend their title. Head coach Bob Gately isdoing another masterful coaching job as he pursues the Section V record for team dualmeet victories held by Don Quinn of East Rochester. LeRoy is led by veterans JasonSaeva, Jr. (160) and Kristian Alexander, Sr. (125). Alexander Is a two time LCAAchampion and Saeva has placed twice. Other seniors are Chad Alwardt (130), RobMay (152), Mike Miller (119), Dan Norsfrand (189), and Wally Scutt (275). Other possibleplace winners for the Oatkan Knights are Brian Shum, Jr. (171); Matt Riggi Jr. (145); andRyan Alexander Jr. (135);
Newcomer Hornell coached by Matt Sheldon, is smarting after losing the dualmeet with LeRoy by one point. The Red Raiders are led by two exceptional seniors. Statefinalist Kory Holland will enter at 112 lb. and Randy Smith will compete at 130 lb. Bothwrestlers are capable of winning their first attempt at a LCAA title. Teammates PhilDrake, Sr. (152), Jason Evingham Jr. (171), Brian Egger, Soph. (112) will be trying to placealso.
Coach Andy Englert's Perry Yellowjackets will place in the top four at theCounties. Perry wrestled Hornell and LeRoy close in two dual meets and feel confidentthey can take this tournament. Leading the Yellowjackets are Shane Rimmer, Jr. (152);Earl Wolcott, Sr. (140); Daryl McLaughlin, Sr. (189); Gary Isaman, Sr. (125); Hans Meyers, Sr.(215); PJiil Sovocool, Jr. (130); Jesse Wolcott, Soph. (135); and Rich Cuozzo, Soph. (103).
The Caledonia Red Raiders coached by John Wilbur (coach of the year 1996),have a very good chance of winning the tournament. Led by seniors Nick Bonnell,(119); Dustin Preston (160), and Larry Smith (152), Caledonia should be formidable.Underclassmen supporting the Red Raiders will be; juniors Tim Jones (103), JeremySackett (130); sophomores James Beaumont (145), Tony D'Ambra (125), and freshmenDavid Jones (96), and Chad Robinson (125).

Steve Schultheis (215) and Rich Rowe (135) areexperienced seniors leading the Bulldogs. Underclassmen Kyle Ciancio, soph. (96); SamWeintraub, Jr. (160); Kris Rowe, Fresh. (119); Josh Love, Jr. (125); Branden Green, Soph.(130); Dan Dutton, Fresh. (103); and Travis Proctor, Jr. (140) will score points tor theBulidogs.
At Warsaw, Coach Al Goodenow will count on a group of experiencedveterans. Seniors Phil Leitten (171), Lucas Perry (112), Andy Shiltz (130), Bill Schell (119)and Aaron Robinson (160), Kevin Finnegan (215) can be counted on to place tor theTigers. Jake Gillen, Soph. (125), and David Leitten, Jr. (275) are underclassmen expectedto place.
Other individuals to watch will be Stettans, Page, Pat Swan (135), and SamWolcott (171) ot Way-Co; Sam Frazier (145), Mike Sylvester (275), Bobby Miner (125), andJeremy Lippens (152) ot Dansville; Matt Kyle (171) and Tom Kane (189) ot Avon; AndyGugliotta (130) and Jett Baroody (171) ot Bath; Jim Langley (171) and Andrew Dietsche(152) ot Geneseo; Neal Jelsma (160), AlexTerrance (152), Alex Melville (140), and NateMarion (189) ot HF-L; Matt Wolte (152) ot Keshequa; Broughton, Jerry Bruegger (112),Adam Jines, (119) from Letchworth; Dustin Beardsley (119), Cory Beardsley (112), LucasFlint (171), and Greg Appleton (140) ot Pavilion; Kyle Kern (112) Brad MacCauley (160) otYork.
Potentially, there could be some terrific match-ups in the finals. At 125, LeRoys'Kristian Alexander and Caledonia's Tony D'Ambra locked horns in their dual meet withAlexander winning an exciting one point victory. Look tor this match in the finals. At 160,LeRoy's Jason Saeva and Way-Co's defending champion Eric Stettans could meet inthe finals. At 171, Warsaw' defending champion Phil Leitten will face a strong challengefrom Lucas Flint ot Pavilion in an expected final bout. The feature final bout could bebetween two State finalists. Tim Page ot Way-Co was the State champ in 1996 at 96 lb.and a third place winner in 1997. His expected opponent should be Hornell's KoryHolland a runner-up in the State finals last year. Page could be seeking revenge after athree point lose to Holland in a dual meet in December.
These expected finals match-ups will be the culmination ot a terrific weekend otwrestling at the Warsaw gymnasium. Saturday's wrestling starts at 11 a.m. with the semifinals beginning at noon.
