The North County News went from the one of the hardest lOKs in Westchester to perhaps the easiest 5K, and with prize money and a men's MAC championship it attracted some fast times to set the pace for many personal records. Elijah Kitur of the Westchester Track Club won in a Westchester County record time of 14:22. He was chased by Rachid Tbatti who also finished under the old record of 14:40 in 14:28. On the women's side Tara Maguire won over Nilka Jepchirchir by 19 sec onds with a 17:25. In all, 123 of the 362 finishers ran under 20 minutes. Both champions also won the age-graded competition Taconic Running Life Editor Katy Quinn Steps Down by Debra Kenney After five years as serving as Editor of Taconic Running Life, Editor Katy Quinn is stepping down. Katy cited her increased job re sponsibilities and job-related traveling as the main reasons for ne cessitating her resignation as editor. Katy took over the position as Editor back in 1993 and created an award-winning newsletter! Her hard work, perseverance, dedication and her attention to de tail and a standard of excellence is recognized by all of the Taconic Road Runners membership who enjoyed the Taconic Running Life Newsletter. We want to thank Katy Quinn for all of her efforts!! Katy, we hope you will still write some articles for us! The resignation of Katy Quinn left some rather large shoes (or should we say running shoes?) to fill. It wasn't long after TRRC President, Lee Saroken, put out the word that Taconic was looking for a new editor that she received a response! Tina Cullen told Lee that she would like to be the editor. Tina has been a member of Taconic for a little over a year and actually is rather new to the sport of running, having been running for about three years. She is currently a Marketing and Sales Consultant at Pepsi Cola in Somers. Tina told the TRRC Board that she wanted to take a more active position with the Club. We welcome Tina to the job of Editor of Taconic Running Life! and took home $250 each. The men's masters competition was taken by Don DiDonato in 15:07 with Phil Richey just 10 seconds behind. Eileen Troy took the women's masters race in 18:58. The Masters winners won $100. Other notable age group winners included John O'Conner, fresh off some spectacular 800 meter performances and one of the two TRRC's Mike Slinskey(l) leads the pack near the 1 mile mark winners of the TRRC scholarship competition. He ran a 16:15 to win the 15-18 men's group. Sandra Khannouchi, one time winner of the Mother's Day 5K and, with her daughter, winner of the mother -daughter team, ran 18:12 to win the 30-39 women's group. Due to the point-to-point nature of the race it was logistically diffi cult and the volunteers were more critical than ever. Once again they were amazing. Bill Foley and Fred Reger set the finish line up on Route 118 and with Vinnie Juliano put out 0.7 miles of cones, all initially with flowing traffic. Roy Altman set out a perfectly measured course and included a 1/2 mile mark to help runners adjust their early pace. Rich Adamski kept registration smooth as usual. Ed McLaughlin did the usual great job in control of the fin ish line and as announcer. Pres iden t ' s Co lumnby Lee SarokenOne of the main purposes of the Taconic Road Runners Club is topromote running. The events of the past two months have exemplified how as individuals and as a club we support and participatein the sport of running .First, there was the Sybil Ludington 50K. The 20th anniversaryrunning of TRRC's longest race also brought with it a major first. The first and second place overall finishers at Sybil were both nationally ranked female runners. Having Ellen McCurtin andDanielle Chemiak taking the honors is very appropriate. TonyGalfano and Ed McLaughlin did an incredible job which took numerous hours of work before, after and during the race. The day following Sybil brought on the rains, but the volunteercorps of Taconic was not dampened by the weather. We coasted ondown to Rye and successfully scored the Rye Derby with precisionand professionalism. Greg Diamond and Ed McLaughlin organized and executed an event of which we are all proud to be ap a r t .Two TRRC women's teams traveled to Albany on May 30th, totackle the Freihoffers 5K National Championship. The teamsplaced 19th and 20th and some excellent times were run by teammembers. Thanks to coaches Scott Abercrombie, Greg Diamondand Ed McLaughlin for being there with encouraging words andc a m e r a s .

The next day the men's teams traveled to NYC to run in the BIG40 in Central Park in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of theNY Road Runners Club. The race went very well and I hear thefood was fabulous after the race.As June blossomed so did the mountain laurel, and an invitationfrom Pete Meisler to view the plants via a trail run in FahnstockState Park. This year they were in full bloom and clearly markedthe trail -OOPS- some of us did take a couple wrong turns, but theview from the top was magnificent. Maybe next year we can getDave Fleishmann to take us all on the Appalachian Trail. The Avon lOK, formerly Advil, took place on Saturday June 6 in

local women run 1-2 in this race (even though they're from competing clubs). The absence of the high profile women runners wasvery refreshing and much appreciated by some of us local athletes(we didn't miss them at all),Sunday June 7... what can 1 say? The North County News 5K wassuch a success that I am at a loss to describe it. [Hard to believe?]You can read the results (check the total number of runners finishing under 21 minutes) and see the photos from the race, but if youmissed it you will not be able to feel the excitement and positiveresponse from the runners , volunteers and spectators. A point-to-point race is an extremely difficult race to manage but Greg Diamond took a race from conception to reality in his usual profess iona l manne r and w i t h sk i l l and commi tmen t . I t was fla t andwow.. . fast .

Oh, and by the way , if you want to get faster try one of our trackworkouts on Wednesday evening at Yorktown High School. DougMiller and the 30 or so regulars would love to see you. And, if youwant company on a long run, join us at the pumphouse on Saturday morning at 7:30 SHARP. TRRC is promoting running, as youcan see from this sampling, and that's what we are all about. If this copy of Taconic Running Life looks a little different, thereason is that Tina Cullen is the new Editor. Congratulations toTina on her maiden voyage. I would like to thank all the TRRCvolunteers. I know how much time you are giving up to makeensuring our reputation of putting on the best races around. Pleasecontinue with the smiles and the caring that have taken TRRC thisfar and that will lead us into a future.

Mother's Day 5K - A Personal Perspectiveby: Gia Boulos

The first time I ran Taconic's Mother's Day race, I lookedforward to the day my daughter would be old enough to joinme. That time had come and we were both looking forwardto it. We weren't going into this as a serious competitive

venture, but just as somethingwe could share, that was just"for the girls". This is especially important to my daughter, as we live in a male dominated household (Dad andt h r e e b r o t h e r s - e v e n t h e c a t

and dog are male! That's a lotof testosterone!)Although we had no time totrain for the event, I wasn't too

DURST AND STOCKER conccmed about Kimberly's

ability to run the distance. In the past, we've gone out spontaneously and run 3 miles before and being a naturally giftedathlete, she never had any trouble doing this. She was alsoin the midd le o f her soccer and Sof tba l l season, so she was

certainly getting a lot of running in.We set out that rainy morning and Iwas sure to warn her, not only as amother, but as a runner, about the perils of starting out too fast. Well, youguessed it, the horn sounded to startthe race.... and where was Kimberly?Out in front with Barbara Brittan! Somuch for'wamings. I knew she wouldsoon fade, so I just maintained mypace and soon we were running sideby side as planned. There was oneproblem: by now Kimberly, at about3 / 4 m i l e i n t o

the race had begun to learn a valuable lesson — negative splits! Shebegan to panic as we looped the pool

parking lot. She thought she had suddenly developed asthma.I tried to reassure her and told her that I breathe that way inevery race, and if we just walk a bit she'll catch her breath

and we could continue slowly, taking breaks whenever shefelt necessary. As we continued to slowly traverse the course,

stopping to walk often, Iw a s w a i t i n g f o r m ydaughter 's compet i t i vespirit to re-emerge. Sheseemed fearful, not wantingt o r e t u r n t o a s t a t e o f

sudden, with the fmish linein sight she took off with afinal kick and beat me to the

finish line! Although I hadvisions of finishing side byside, 1 was thrilled to see herfinish with the guts and de-temiination of a winner, us

ing every ounce of strengthshe had left to finish strong, instead of being beatendown by an early mistake.

As it turned out, she went home with a silver medal which shewore with pride the rest of the day.Race director Is note: We asked Gia to write about her expert'ence because a number of people had commented about howencouraging she had been with Kimberly after that too faststart and panic in the pool parking lot. We want to recognizeall the Moms who^ve encouraged and cajoled all of usthrough the tough days and helped make us the competitorswe are today. NO MAN (or woman) IS AN ISLAND but, when it conies to the sport of running, one has come pretty close.

Caryl Robotti has shown tireless effort as a race director and participant in numerous running events. She currentlyserves as President of the Stamford Running Club and she can be credited with the first all women's race held in StamfordConnecticut last fall, which proved to be a tremendous success.

Caryl's talents are not limited to putting on running events. I saw her recently at the Jim Fixx 5-mile Memorial Dayrace in Greenwich, and was bemoaning my recent running slump and disappointments. Caryl, not only cheered meon but, left me with a feeling of confidence and the power to push to the finish. She touched my heart. That's whatCaryl does, she reaches inside and gives apart of herself to others. Now it is our turn to give back, Please join us inrunning this race for Caryl. Do what you do... run (or walk), and as a bonus touch a heart. It is a truly, winningfeeling.

Letters to the Editor... DearTaconic Running Ufe,

Dear Editor,Over the last several days I have reflected

on that 5K in Yorktown! My goodness, what a field!Without a doubt, it had to be the best 5K in this part ofthe country, ever! When and where did you see a winning time of 14:22,sixty runners breaking 18:00 and a master, me, getting8th in his age-group with a 16:47? Never have I seensuch quantity and quality in one race. OK, some wouldsay the NYRRC Club Team Championship Race isloaded and Boston has produced some great fields, but the NYRRC race is in the heart of the biggest running club in the world and Boston leads the nation. So, not bad for Westchester, right? And for me, theNorth County News 5K showed that the 5K is not aconsolation race for the marathon; it is a different animal all together! Just fast and sweet. Top end aerobic stuff!Without a doubt, congratulations have to go to GregDiamond, the race director, and the Taconic Road Runners Club, Wow. My head will be spinning for days toc o m e .

As a 20 year member of TRRC, I'd like to comment onNancy Young's article in the last newsletter regarding thechanges in TRRC. I agree with Nancy that the club haschanged, and I was sorry that some of the members areexperiencing this as a negative thing. Changes don't need tomake the "old days" good or bad.

I see the changes as overall being very positive. In the "olddays," rarely was the spouse or child of a runner seen at theraces, now entire families attend. There were extremely fewvolunteers at the races. While we still, in general, see thesame people volunteering, there are many more of us than inthe past. The best change for me personally was the chanceto join a women's team and compete in Central Park, whichis both a gratifying and humbling experience. Since Imoved to Manhattan some years ago, I cannot see myTRRC friends every Wednesday night, as I did for manyyears. So it's great to have the opportunity to see them bothin New York City and in Westchester.

The old days were extremely important for me as a newrunner. It was at TRRC where I got encouragement andadvice from more experienced runners about mnning myfirst marathon in 1980 (where did the years go?). I did myfirst speedwork at the Yorktown High Track, enjoyed manyruns in the company of others, and made lifelong friendships. And who can forget all those beers and Sambucas atSunshine Pizza, Chicken Wings at the Hunterbrook, bustrips to the Albany 30K Chopperthon, etc. etc.!!

Yes, Taconic has changed. For me, Taconic is like mysecond family, and while my first family has changed overthe years, it is still nonetheless my family, in whatever shapeor form it evolves into. Thanks to Nancy for a great article, and I hope not all of us are lamenting the "good" old days.

Dear Lee and Ed,Thanks for a nice event this past Sunday [June

As usual, your event was well-organized. Anyglitches weren't apparant to the participants. Best ofall, flat and fast as advertised. For me, just what thedoctor ordered - sub sevens with only two months oftraining!

Thanks again.B o b C o l t e n

Taconic would like to thankthose members who devoted their time to this great Taconic event including Lee Saroken, Nancy Young, JoanneBertram, Steve Greenberg, Margie Jeraci, and Tina Cullen.

John O'Connor "Hooked on Running"

I have been running for only 4 years, but my decision to become a runner is the most valuable decision that I havemade. Until my freshman year in high school, 1 was primarily a soccer player, but in 9th grade I joined the cross-countryteam. I remember how much my legs hurt during the first week, and how long three miles seemed, but for some reason Istuck with it. The lessons I have learned, the friends I have made and the success I have achieved make me look back at thefirst day of cross country without regret and with much pleasure.

Running is a special and unique type of sport; the amount of effort you put into it is what you receive in return.Being a runner, I have learned the value of hard work, determination and dedication. When I first started out with the team,I would shy away from the more difficult practices, and I didn't know how to set goals and try my hardest to reach them. Itsfunny how nine years of school couldn't teach me these things, but only one year of running could. Soon I began to setgoals for myself and then work my training towards accomplishing what I wanted to do. Injuries and disappointment oftenplague the runner, but surviving through them taught me how to handle adversity. These lessons spread to other areas of mylife, teaching me how to succeed in the classroom as well.

The only people that understand runners are runners themselves and I have certainly made many friends withinthe high school track world. I think it is great to have a sport where, when everything is said and done, you are good friendswith your opponents. I love that I can call up a friend to go for a run on a Sunday, even though we raced against each otherfor a county or invitational title the day before. Friendships are so valuable when trying to be as good a runner as you canbe, because training does get difficult and its always good to have friends to help you through it.

I am so glad that I started running, and not just because of how successful I have been. I love to just lace up theshoes on a sunny day and go for a nice run on the trails. I value everything the sport has taught me, and I plan to never stopgoing out for those special runs that we all love.

Paul J. Maglione

Taconic Road Runners Club *Hooked on Running" ScholarshipI attended my first cross country meet while in the fifth grade when I accompanied my parents to watch my brother

run. From the opening stampede to the finishing kick, this sport captivated me like none I had ever wimessed before.I ran my first road race in October 1992 at the age of twelve. This led me to decide to try to pass the state-mandated

fitness test that would allow me to join the high school team while still in middle school. Unfortunately, I could not pass asingle part of this test. Unable to run for the high school team, I regularly attended running clinics which were conducted bythe high school cross country coach at the middle school.

Finally, when I reached high school I was able to join the high school cross country and track teams. In my first onemile time trial on the track I ran a time of over seven minutes. Hardly a desirable time for an aspiring distance runner, My first5k cross country time was equally unimpressive, just under 30 minutes. I spent the rest of my freshman year bringing up therear in just about every race I ran. It didn't matter to me because the love for running was still there, and I knew as I long as Icontinued to work hard things would get better.

And they did I trained all summer and joined the cross country team in the fall as a vastly improved runner. My timeson the track saw similar improvements. By the time I was a senior I finished 9th in the same race that I had finished 136th asa freshman.

Though my times have diminished, my love for running has not. The sport has taught me to believe in myself andthat hard work and dedication will pay off. By applying this philosophy to other areas of my life I can improve in them just asI have improved as a runner. I know that if I can improve from a cross country runner who runs a 29 minute 5K to a memberof the Cross-County team, there is nothing that hard work cannot accomplish.

Taconic Strides Through Burlington -L i f e I s A M a r a t h o n - B e I n I t !

By Anne TuiteStanding at the starting line of my fifth marathon, my mind focused on the 26.2 miles aheadof me, I reviewed my training, retied my shoe-laces for the third time, and exchangedanxious words of encouragement with my fellow road warriors. As the gun-shot sent us onour way, my training partner and I embarked on a journey that would test our physical andmental capacities. All the training had been done, the gallons of water consumed, the goalwas the finish line. The brass ring was ours for the taking. It would only elude our grasp if the speed and the heatdiverted our attention. Fortunately that day our goal was realized and the finish line welcomed us home.It is said that life's learnings happen in reflection. In reflecting upon the race 1 realized that it was a metaphor in the journey of life. Yet thisrace, and therefore one's life must have a purpose, a goal to run towards. Watching the pack of runners in front of me and hearing thosebehind made me realize that we were all bound together by a common goal. However, there were as many different reasons to run the raceas there were runners. Our individual goals created a powerful mass of humanity capable of collective greatness. This sense of purposepropelled us forward, ready to tackle the hills, accept encouragement from strangers and bestow well wishes on those struggling toovercome the obstacles that caused them to question their sense of self.I would posit that we are all in a marathon, the race of life. It is a daily journey that tests your preparedness, yourcapacity for challenge, and your willingness to reach down deep inside yourself and go forward. We are each in thisrace for a reason, the challenge is defining your own purpose and creating a "training schedule" that will aid in yourdevelopment. Without knowing the course a runner would be lost, anxiously taking wrong turns, wasting energy andbecoming exhausted with the thought of continuing. In your race, how many wrong turns have you taken? Howmany hills have beaten you? Does your training schedule need to be revised to get you back on course? A runner whois wavering on stopping will slow down, refuel and continue. Perhaps that is what we all must do to stay on course.Your challenge is to define your purpose; discover your goals, your life's mission, and "train" for your individualgreatness. A life without knowing one's purpose is a journey with no destination. Having a purpose for the work youdo gives it credence. It defines who you are. It is the essence of self As you create your training schedule, surround

yourself with those who accept the journey too, give andreceive the encouragement needed to overcome the physical and mental obstacles that you will encounter. Slowdown, refuel your body, mind and spirit and create a revised training schedule. The road is yours, the journey hasbegun. Victory is a word of your own definition

This philosophical prose was inspired by participating in theJ998 Vermont City Marathon in Burlington. The clean, fresh

air, sparkling waters of Lake Champlain and enthusiastic crowdmade for an excellent running event. The course twists and

turns through the city of Burlington providing a fast pace overrolling terrain. Taconic was well represented by Fred Reger

(3:31:59), Tina Cullen (3:43:16), Emmy Stacker (3:12:29), AnneTuite (3:50) and Mike Slinskev who took 2nd over-all with a

time of 2:22. If you are looking for a novel way to spendMemorial Day weekend in '99, we found it in Vermont! Con

gratulations to everyone! And to those who supported us intraining!

By Ed McLaughlin

Over the years some races have dropped off the Taconic Road Runners Club schedule for one reason or another, or a race ischanged in some significant way. Whenever this happens some club members find the adjustment difficult. But, not to worr)'! Inorder to ease this painful experience we've come up with a solution, it's called Virtual Taconic.. How about re-living some of thoseraces which no longer appear on the schedule? Something like a time machine,., something like a time warp... something likebeing stuck in the nostalgic past... the good old days? It's easy to do, you know why? The courses are all still there, all you have to do is to show up and run them. Debbie SchrammlOK? It's still there. Titicus Resevoir 7 Miler? Yep, still there. Guiding Eyes for the Blind lOK? The old North County Newscourse, including grunt hill? That's right, none of the roads have been moved, not an inch!

Here's how Virtual Taconic will work. Get yourself a can of spray chalk, choose an appropriate starting line, mark it off. Hop inyour car and zip around for the appropriate distance, marking off the miles as you go. Park the car, run the course - be sure to timeyourself. Now here's the virtual part, write down your name, address, age, time, etc. and sign a waiver, then either e-mail or snailmail it to: Virtual Taconic, PO Box 711, Shrub Oak, NY 10588. along with the race fee of $12.00.

During the year, we will post the times in the newsletter and on the website, at the end of the year we will declare the winners. Also, you can trace your progress, and improve your time as the year goes by. Say you go out and run Debbie Schramm in 48minutes in July. Your time gets posted, and you are fourth in your age-group. Now you have the opportunity to back out thereany time you like, say in October when the temperatures are more to your liking, and you run it in 45 minutes. You post your newtime, and - Presto! - you move up to second, what a deal!

Taconic 'Runs' Successful Race for Rye Derby

There are few of us in Taconic who enjoy running in therain. How many of us would like to stand in the rain at arace? Well, on Sunday, April 26th a group of TaconicRoad Runners who normally wouldn't like to run in thesetypes of conditions, found themselves setting up cones, handing out medals, spindling at a bionic rate, and keeping the tired, drenched finishers in order in the chutes.Due in part to the hard work of Rich Nash and EdMcLaughlin, TRRC managed to perpetuate their reputation of excellent race organizers. Again, this successwas made possible by those Taconic members volunteer-

April 25, 1998, Carmel, New YorkWeather. Cool, Sunny, breezy29 starters, 25 finishers

What would be more appropriate for the running of the 20thAnnual Sybil Ludington 50K historical Run than to have awoman be the race's overall winner? Well, 1 guess that wouldbe to also have a woman as runner-up! That's exactly whathappened this past Saturday as Ellen McCurtin, 31, of NewYork City broke the existing course record with a very fast3:48:34. The old record was Eileen Corley's mark of 3:55:14in 1986. Following a mere two minutes behind was last year'sdefending woman's champ, Daniele Cherniak, 36, of CoheesNY, her time 3:50:58. We are sure that Sybil, who first traversed the course on April 26, 1777 (on horseback), would

McCurtin, Balsamo and Cherniak

approve. First male runner (3rd overall) was Ralph Balsamo,McCurtin's Millrose AA teammate, in 3.56:46.Among the other finishers, we note that Don Villeneuve, amember of the host Taconic Road Runner Club, completedhis 19th Sybil (for some reason Don missed the very first one)in 4:30:37 which was good for third place in the always lough50-59 age group.Timothy Kouroumis, 60, received the "Sy Mah" award forwinning the 60-69 age group in the time of 4:38:39.Just so you don't get the idea that this year's result was .somesort of fluke, you should note that McCurtin was NYRRC's"Ultra Runner of the Year" a couple of years ago, and Cherniakis the reigning US National lOOK Champion, having won thatdistinction a mere few weeks before Sybil.

I'm sure there's a challenge to be thrown down here. To all of

2 0

the wimpy, with a capital "W", Taconic men who fold like apoorly made tent when a real race is offered up. This is thebest 50K around, ask anyone, and it's is your own backyard -what's your excuse?. Thank god for Don Villeneuve, DavidFarquhar (who drove down from Mass.), A1 Dumont and JoeHandelman for carrying the Taconic colors on race day thisyear. (Results appeared in the May issue)

Women's RunningBy Debra Kenney

I can't believe the year is half over! It seems like the year isflying by. It must be because the Taconic Women's Teamshave been running many races. In April we traveled southand ran the Queens Half-Marathon. It was a tough race because it rained before it started and throughout the race! Thewomen who participated were: Barbara Britten 1:31:31, DebraKenney 1:34:24, Nancy Vasta 1:38:07,Nancy Young 1:44:15, Lee Saroken1:44 :26 , Caro l Hanson 1 :45 :45 , Rob inM a l o n e y 1 : 4 6 : 0 4 , J a c k i e G o s i n2:02:02,Gaynelle Farina 2:07:27, GretaOlsson 2:07:46, and Kathleen D'Ottavio2 : 0 8 : 4 2 .

On May 30th, the Women's Masters Teamgot a very early start and headed up toAlbany to run the Freihoffer 5K Run forWomen. Thanks to Ed McLaughlin,GregDiamond and Scott Abercromtjie for doing the driving. The Freihoffer Run forWomen was the USA Track and Field Open& Masters National Championship. It was a beautiful dayand many of the top women runners were there. It was veryexciting to watch Lynn Jennings and Joan Samuelson warmup. TRRC fielded two masters teams and the teams finished19th and 20th. After the race, we were treated to lots ofcookies and Freihoffer's bakery products and a live rock androll band that performed at the Empire State Plaza.

If I can speak on behalf of the TRRC Masters women thatattended the Freihoffer Run, there was a special feeling weall felt thatday. For us to be a part of an all women's race thathad over 3000 runners f rom a l l over was a th r i l l . I t was a lso

great to have the opportunity to meet Mary Fannelli Lund.Mary used to run with Taconic some years back before theLund family relocated to Buffalo. I have heard from a lot ofTRRC members that Mary was a great runner and a verynice person. 1 can now say I know this Is true. Joan Dietrickalso ran the Freihoffer Run. She is not a Masters yet, but itwas the first race she has run since her injury almost twoyears ago! Welcome back, Joan, we look forward to your40th birthday. See what running does for you, it makes youlook forward to that big 40, not dread it!

A week later, on June 6th, TRR women headed down to Central Park along with over 2,000 other women to compete inthe Avon Mini Marathon 10K. Usually this race is very hot,but this year it was cool and comfortable. Nancy Young's10K was her best time yet! Congratulations, Nancy!

We are still in 2nd place, which is quite remarkable considering we didn't field a team for the May NYRR Grand Prix racebecause it was the same date as the TRR Mother's Day 5K!If you are interested in running with any of the women's teams(open, masters, and veterans) call me (914) 245-9629 or e-m a i l m e a t a b e r k e n @ l x . n e t c o m . c o m

Mike

Harris, Seth Denenberg, Joe Porcaro, TonyGal fano , and Dan Moffi t t .The Town of Yorktown supervisor LindaCooper and her right hand person, PattiMalone, were instrumental in getting thenew course approved with the town board.Without their support, there probablywouldn't have been a new NCN, The police chief. Bob Arruda was the next in lineto lend his support in a big way. With hisSeargant McMahon at the helm on race day, traffic on the course was non-existent. TheYorktown Ambulance Corps was presentand fortunately not needed. The Daily Bagel joined the sponsorshiproles this year and contributed enough toallow us to do prize money and sweatshirtsfor age group winners. They are opening a

new store near the old one on Route 202 (see the flyer in this newsletter.)The North County News continued its flagship role in putting ontheir race. Through some tough recent years, with a minimal number of runners involved, they stuck with it.I've scored and been involved in many races but never was the solerace director before. I appreciate more than ever what race directorsmust live through and the absolutely vital role that volunteers play.

The Men's Masters Team & Other Thingsby Scott Abercrombie

As of June 7th we have completed 5 out of 13 races in the NewYork Road Runners Grand Prix, and 2 out of 9 in the MetropolitanAthletic Congress Grand Prix. Our best team effort has been atthe Aspire lOK (MAC Series) in Plainview, Long Island in April. Our 8th Master was under 38 minutes with Phil Richey, SteveCalidonna & Rick Ashby 1,2,3 in the 40-44 age group and ScottMosenthal 1st in the 45-49 age group. The rest of the gang thatday was Roy Altman, Bob Briglio, Skip Hovdestad, Paul Pacchianna& myself. The most recent N.Y.R.R.C. Grand Prix race, the 4 mileron May 31. was a disappointment. We were third, and the StatenIsland club advanced to within a few points of our first place position in the scries. History may be repeating itself, as last year wewere essentially tied with Staten Island going into the last race.Joe Porcaro scored third for the team with a t ime of 23:35 after

only 5 weeks of decent training following a yearlong injury! Sincewe organized an active Taconic master's team in 1990 Joe hasbeen our most consistent performer and participant. Greg Diam o n d l e d t h e t e a m a t t h e 4 m i l e r w i t h a t i m e o f 2 2 : 2 7 . B o b

Daubenbis, Skip Hovdestad, Kevin Moran & myself rounded outthe team that day. The North County News was our second race inthe MAC series. We won with Phil Richey running the 5K in15:17, Steve Calidonna in 16:16 & Rick Ashby in 16:34! 362 finishers! Special congratulations to Team member Greg Diamondfor transforming the North County News into a super race! Special congratulations are also due to team member Scott Mosenthalfor winning (over all, not just age group) the 5 mile race aroundLake Carmel on May 2nd, and for his promotion to principal ofIrvington High School! Scott is a great marathon runner from thepast whose running has been somewhat on hold due to coachingand other community activities. Thanks to having one of our own,Ken Martin , on the MAC Board, the MAC organization has become aware of our children's races on Columbus day. As a resultthe Plainview Old Bethpage Road Runners Club in Long Island isinterested in directing a similar race. This is the same club thatdoes the Aspire lOK and the Ocean To Sound Relay (a spin offfrom our Manhattan to Peekskill Relay). So, on June 9th I metwith P.O.B.R.R.C.'s board of directors, and explained all the insand outs of the childrens race. They were very receptive, and considering that nearly 500 children participate in our race every year,it's exciting that this concept may spread into other locations. Someof the board members were up here two days before, (they refer toour area as being upstate), to run the North County News 5K, and1 heard a lot of nice comments on what a great race it was.2 7 2 7 9 D o m i n i c L a m p a s i , 3 5 1 6 : 4 1 5 : 2 2 1 6 : 3 7 5 92 8 2 8 9 T o m P i a z z a , 2 8 1 6 : 4 3 5 : 2 3 1 6 : 4 3 6 22 9 2 9 7 P a u l F e n d i e r , 4 2 1 6 : 4 6 5 : 2 4 1 5 : 5 4 3 13 0 3 0 8 N i c h o l a s C a s w e l l , 4 8 1 6 : 4 7 5 : 2 4 1 5 : 1 3 1 4
