Booksellers go to high-traffic areas likeshopping streets, train stations, etc. They go for volume of contacts, notlong, drawn-out sales talks. People whoare interested will buy books, the otherswon't-there's no more significance to it.

1

The bookseller acknowledges a person'san.swer and tells him, "I want to sell youthIS book," while putting the book in hishands and then says, "Take a look at the~able of contents and see which chaptermterests you."

3

Unpublished work::O 1997 CSt All Rights Reserved.

Booksellers preferably work in teams oftwo or more. They can work alone. They walk toward a person or the personis walking toward them. They usuallyuse an opening question that stops aperson and matches the book they areselling.

Example: "Do you know what blocks aperson from reaching his full potential?"(then sell the person the DMSMH book)

2

The result is that the person startslooking through the chapter.

4

Page 23: 19970507 IMEC Program Order 375, An LRH ED 339R Implementati

While he's looking, the bookseller says,"I am from Oianetics, a modem study ofthe mind, and I am selling this bookwhich shows you exactly what holds aperson back from reaching their true andfull potentials in life. It costs "

5

A bookseller does one last action; hegives the person an Evolution of aScience ticket, notes down the person'saddress, tells him to come in to see thefilm and ends off: "Thank you. I hopewe hear from you."

7

- 2 -

The bookseller, without hesitation, takes the book out ofthe person's hands, asking "Do you have with you?I hope it's not too large a bill so that Ican give you change. Take a look,"while the bookseller rattles the change inhis pocket. Usually the person finds themoney and buys the book.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND YOUR MIND

A DIANETICS® INTRODUCTORY LECTURE

BOOK

PROMOTIONCOME-ON DISSEMINATIONHANDLING THE PUBLIC INDIVIDUALCONCERNING THE SEPARATENESS OFDIANETICS AND SCIENTOLOGYTHE PHOENIX LECTURES

This introductory lecture will interest and involve your new publicin Dianetics technology. It will help increase book sales of Dianetics:The Modern Science of Mental Health and provide come-on for new publicto the first paid service on the Dianetics Route.

If you have other successful intros, do not drop these out, butsimply add this intro lecture to your intro line.

When properly delivered, this intro will bring new public to anawareness that there is part of their mind which affects them and thatthere is something they can do about it.

SETTING UP

This lecture can be delivered in your erg or in a public library.Checklists are included with this issue as attachments 1 and 2 whichtell you how to set up your introductory lecture in the erg and in thepublic library.

DELIVERY

A hard and fast rule that should be made from the beginning isthat no new public are routed onto the intro after it has started. The lecture gradiently increases the public's knowledge and just as youwould not start someone half way onto a checksheet, you should not startpublic part of the way into the intra lecture.

In order to deliver this intro lecture successfully, the lecturerneeds to have the following points totally in. This means he must drilldelivering this lecture, while applying these points.

1. This intro lecture is not delivered rotely. The lecturer doesn'tneed to memorize this lecture or deliver it verbatim. It should, however, be delivered as closely as possible to the original forbest results. The lecturer can and should refer to a copy of thelecture while delivering it, but must not read it aloud. Thelecturer must practice it so it is natural.

It is VITAL that the lecturer makes this lecture his own and KEEPSIT ON-SOURCE.

2. The intro lecturer's TR 1 should be good enough to impinge. Alecture given without good TR 1 will not get very good resultsas without good impingement the public will not see and becomeas aware of how the reactive mind affects them.

3. Give the intro lecture with the purpose of bringing the new publicindividual to a high interest in Dianetics technology and reachingfor their first Dianetics service. (Reference: HCO PL 7 Feb 79COME-ON DISSEMINATION)

- 2 -

4. Be REAL. Use enough examples (make up your own as needed) to getagreement from the new public on the subject that is being talkedabout. Draw pictures in the air with your hands, etc., to ,get thepoint across.

5. Observe the group as you go along and if they appear to be bored orstart going downtone, use more examples AND get them involved byhaving them give you real life examples of what you are going over.

6. ALWAYS get audience participation and involvement in the introlecture. THIS IS VITAL.

7. DO NOT use words that could easily be misunderstood. Ensure allmisunderstood words are handled immediately.

8. Do not make claims or promises that Dianetics will do this or that,or say "You will attain .... " when you should say" It is possiblefor you to attain .... " or "People have attained .... " (Reference:HCO PL 19 Sept 1979 PROMOTION)

9. Always handle the public's questions per HCOB 28 April 1971 IssueII, BOOKS ARE DISSEMINATION and HCO PL 7 Feb 1971 COME-ONDISSEMINATION.

Example:

If the public person should ask you to explain how and why theDianetics procedures work, simply answer his question by sayingsomething like:

"All of your questions are answered in the book DIANETICS: THEMODERN SCIENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH. Unfortunately it would take me days toanswer every question that you may have about Dianetics and to be quitehonest I don't have that much time. I'm happy to say though that we dohave Dianetics services that teach these Dianetics procedures and youcan set with the registrar when werre finished here, and she (or he)will answer your questions."

10. Mainly, be interested and uptone. Show you care and express youraliveness and VITALITY to the public you're delivering the lectureto. (See pages 291-292 of THE PHOENIX LECTURES book.)

REGISTRARS

Any person acting as a registrar, following this intro lecture, should be briefed on the lecture prior to regging someone who hasattended it.

This will greatly ease the registrar's job.

Raw public may not be regged in the public library, if the lectureis delivered there. Attendees at the public library will be invited tovisit the organization to find out more and given invitational cardswhich entitle them to a free introductory Dianetics session at the org.

The public coming off of this intro lecture are Dianetics publicand are signed up for a Dianetics service as their next action (Ref:LRHm ED 344R INT RIDGE ON THE BRIDGE). The Reg, in a very certain, highARC and professional manner, directs the person to his next service onthe route (Ref: HCO PL 16 April 65, HANDLING THE PUBLIC INDIVIDUAL) .

Should the reg sell the person a book or give him promo forother services, it should be realized that Dianetics and Scientology®are separate subjects and that Dianetics public should be givenDianetics literature or sold Dianetics books (Ref: HCO PL 25 January1957, CONCERNING THE SEPARATENESS OF DIANETICS AND SCIENTOLOGY).

HOW TO UNDERSTAND YOUR MIND

A DIANETICS® INTRODUCTORY LECTURE

This is the script which should be used to deliver this· lecture.

NOTE: THERE IS AN ALTERNATE ENDING TO BE USED WHEN DELIVERING THISLECTURE IN A PUBLIC LIBRARY. THIS IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF THISLECTURE.

Hello!

My name is (your name) and I shall be giving you a talk onwhat Dianetics technology is.

Before I start I'd like to know your name and what you do.this muzzled. Just ask each person and acknowledge him.)

All right.

(Keep

First, if you don't understand what I'm saying, stop me and I'llclear it up.

If you have a comment about me or the room, please see meafterwards and we can discuss it then.

Also, if I ask you a question or have you look at some experienceabout life, really take a look at it. See if it ever happened to you.

Okay? Good.

Have you ever had a mystery or a question about something, like"Why did she say that?" or "How come he's acting that way?" or "How comeI feel this way?" and when you finally got the answer to that questionyou felt a lot more confidence and certainty in yourself? (Pause)

Okay.

Dianetics techniques help a person find answers to questions andmysteries about himself and others. These techniques help him to knowthat he's in control of his own life and what happens to him.

Dianetics is not psychiatry. It is not psycho-analysis. It is nota support group. It is not hypnotism. Dianetics is defined as DIA,a Greek word which means through and NODS, Greek meaning soul.L. Ron Hubbard, the Founder of Dianetics, further defines Dianetics as"WHAT THE SOUL IS DOING TO THE BODY." (Pause)

Let me ask you something.

Were you afraid of the dark when you were young, or knew someonewho was? (Pause) Okay.

Have you ever heard of people who had some pain or trouble withtheir body but there was nothing wrong with them physically as it wasall in their mind? (Pause) All right.

These are a few of the things Dianetics technology deals with.

Have you ever seen a person trying to block out his problems withalcohol or drugs? (Pause) Okay.

Have you ever suffered a severe loss and experienced the pain thatcan bring? (Pause) Okay.

Have you ever seen personal relations between people go bad; withthem breaking up because they just didn't know what to do to get backtogether again? (Pause) All right.

Unpublished work: ~ 1997 CSI. All Rights Reserved.

Page 32: 19970507 IMEC Program Order 375, An LRH ED 339R Implementati

IMEC PROGRAM ORDERATTACHMENT 7-3

- 2 -

These are some of the things that the Dianetics techniques can helpa person do something about.

Now a few people may say, "I don't need that. That doesn't haveanything to do with me. My mind works fine."

Well, they're very right from the way they see it. Because themind is perfect. The awake, conscious part of the mind that you'reaware of is quite perfect and incapable of making mistakes.

If you have the correct information, your ability to compute andfigure out things is never wrong ... IF YOU HAVE THE CORRECTINFORMATION.

But, have you ever seen people make mistakes and do things thatdidn't make sense? (Pause) Okay.

Well, here's what happens: If incorrect information is given to themind that the person doesn't know about, or has totally forgotten, thenthe person makes mistakes and acts in strange and peculiar ways.

Otherwise, the mind works perfectly.

Let's take a look at something else.

Have you ever heard someone say, "What I don't know won't hurt me"or something like that? (Pause) Okay.

I want to tell you something about that.

The only thing that can affect a person is anything he's not awareof; because if he's aware of it, he can do something about it, whetherhe tries to control it or run from it. By becoming more aware, you canthen be in control of your own life and what happens to you.

I'll give you an example.

Imagine a guy who is afraid of closed-in spaces and he can't ridein elevators, but he works on the 18th floor of a building!

So every day he has to walk up and down the stairs.

Then, through correct application of the Dianetics techniques, hediscovers the time when he was 3 years old when some boys locked him inan abandoned refrigerator. (Pause) He almost suffocated to death.(Pause)

Through the standard application of Dianetics techniques, he wasable to rid himself of the closed-in feeling he used to get. Now he canride in elevators.

Or take someone else who has real bad headaches until he hasDianetics techniques correctly applied to him. He had totally forgottenabout falling out of a tree house when he was quite young and hittinghis head. (Pause) He doesn't have headaches anymore; he solved themystery of where they came from.

Now Dianetics techniques are not designed to cure anything, or getrid of headaches. These are only some of the added benefits which quiteoften occur as a result of becoming more aware through Dianeticstechniques.

Here's a scientific fact!

There is an entire part of the mind which you have no control over. It's full of things which you're not aware of. AND IT AFFECTS YOU!(Pause)

This part of the mind influences your thinking and youractions. It causes unwanted emotions, drugs and alcohol addiction, child abuse, suicide and violence. It gives you depression, confusionand indecision. And you can't do a thing about it when you're notaware of it.

The effects this part of the mind can have on a person are quitedevastating. An example is violence in the home. Is it possible thatsomeone can have so much pain and torment that he would take it out onhis wife or children? These things go on every day right on our streetsand in our homes. As I said before, the effects of this negative mindare quite devastating.

But when you become aware of the painful and mysterious things thatare stored in it, you can become more confident. And you can gain moreself respect and ability to do the things you really want to do.

(NOTE: At this point if you are doing the library lecture, use thealternate ending attached to this issue.)

Learning how to do this (whether it's to help someone else or gainthis ability for yourself), is quite easy when one does one of theDianetics courses offered right here.

Have you ever wanted to say something to someone but held yourselfback from saying it because you weren't really sure of yourself?(Pause) Okay.

Have you ever been made anxious because of a failed relationship?(Pause) All right.

That was the negative part of your mind affecting you.

Let's do a demonstration.

Don't think of an elephant!

Who thought of an elephant!

(Pause) Okay.

(Pause) Okay.

Notice how it just seems to come into your mind whether you want itthere or not? All right.

This uncontrolled part of the mind reacts automatically without youthinking at all.

Let's do another demonstration.

Close your eyes. Good. Now -- think of a cat. Got a picture of acat? Good. Now make your cat purple. (Pause) Good. Put baby bootieson him. (Pause) Good. Now put him in front of a pumpkin. (Pause) Allright. Now have him back up to the pumpkin and sit down. (Pause) Good.Open your eyes.

That was an example of a picture you're aware of and in control of.You've never seen a purple cat wearing baby booties and sitting in frontof a pumpkin, have you? (Pause)

But in the secret and hidden part of the mind, there are manypainful and upsetting pictures that you're not aware of and have nocontrol over.

Ever wonder where the pictures in nightmares come from? (Pause)Have you ever felt real fear from a bad dream? (Pause)

Let's do something else.

Close your eyes. Good. Now remember a time when you were reallyhappy. A time you really like. Nod your head when you have it. Good. Now, just move that picture over to the side -- don't let it go awaythough. All right. Get a picture right next to it of something thatyou didn't like, something that hurt you. A time that made you reallyfeel bad. Nod your head when you have it. Okay.

Get rid of them. (Long pause) All right.Which picture seemed to stay with you longer?one. )

Open your eyes. Okay.(It should be the bad

Okay. Well that picture was connected to something in the negativepart of your mind. You can control the good pictures, but the picturesin the negative part of your mind are not fully controlled by you.(Pause) You need to do something about that.

If you can imagine a tumor inside your head, getting larger andmore painful each day -- that's something like this part of the mind.(Pause) It grows with every painful experience and upset in life to thepoint where the person can't tolerate it.

This is where painful emotions come from. This is where lonelinessand insecurity come from. This is why people lose confidence andpersonal certainty in themselves and what they want to do.

What is this negative part of the mind?

Can you clear away these unwanted and painful emotions that haunt aperson, and restore your memory of the experiences without the pain thatis connected to them?

How can you lessen the effect of this negative part of the mind?

L. Ron Hubbard fully explains this in his book, DIANETICS: THEMODERN SCIENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH. He shows you how you can startgaining control of these unwanted emotions and pains that are in thisnegative part of the mind. And let me tell you something; theseunwanted emotions and pains that are in the negative part of the mindcan be gotten control of totally. What can be restored are the memoriesof these experiences without the pain, grief, fear or agony that isconnected to them.

The procedures covered in this book, DIANETICS: THE MODERNSCIENCE OF MENTAL HEALTH, are taught right here on the Hubbard®Dianetics Seminar.

This is a hands-on workshop where you can give and receiveDianetics and resolve some of these things that have been holding youback in life, which prevent you from doing everything you want to do andaccomplish.

The seminar includes everything you need to get started: anillustrated workbook and a library-quality hardcover edition ofDianetics (hold up copies) .

You'll learn under the wing of an experienced supervisor who ishimself trained on Dianetics procedure. Thousands of people have donethe seminar and found themselves far happier in life and more confidentas a result.

This seminar also includes the use of a specially made video, whichlays out Dianetics procedures in 10 easy-to-follow steps. This videoshows you how simple Dianetics techniques are to apply so that you canget started immediately.

If what I've talked about has made you feel a bit uncomfortable, realize that this negative part of your mind was affecting you duringthis talk.

Did you feel the effects of it at times? (Pause) Okay.

Now you can do something about it.

Thank you.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN ALTERNATIVE ENDING

FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES

Learning how to do this (whether it's to help someone else or gainthis ability for yourself) is quite easy to learn. Since Dianetics waspublished, over 40 years ago, people have been using the Dianetics bookin their own homes, learning as they go and applying what they learn.

HOW TO DO DIANETICS WORKSHOPS

Dianetics Introductory Co-Auditing Workshops are being successfully deliveredthroughout the U.S., resulting in thousands of Dianetics public starting to co-audit andthus reaching for more services in the missions that are delivering these workshops.

The public for these workshops are Dianetics book buyers (including Dianeticsvideo buyers). In the pilot workshops, promoted and delivered as described in this issue, average attendance was achieved of 50 people, and often 90 to 100 people attended.

It was found in surveys of book buyers that what they most want is a workshopwhere they get actual hands-on experience with Dianetics, and can get any questions orconfusions cleared up.

The major cognition that people have at the workshops, by survey, is that"Dianetics is extremely simple" as LRH points out in DMSMH, and that Dianetics doesgive them the results they were originally looking for.

Dianetics workshops also give these public "hands-on" experience with Dianeticsas they see an actual "live" Dianetics auditing session and then give and receive aDianetics session as the workshop attendees are twinned up and they actually co-auditas part of the workshop.

The following are the basic actions that need to be done to promote, set up,deliver and follow-up on the Dianetics introductory workshop:

CHECKLIST

SCHEDULE THE WORKSHOP

1. Set a time when/where the workshop will be held(minimally once a week).

Scheduling must be based on policy-HCO PL 13 Aug. 65,FOUNDATION, BASIC COURSE ORGANIZATION, OEC Volume 6,page 473:

"The assembly line must exist before one can get trafficto put on it. So make the line. Then get the traffic. Andalways feed new traffic in at the bottom. Don't recruit by fitsand starts-'An open evening every two months, etc.,' is badpromotion. It peaks traffic. Have one at least every weekif at all."-LRH

2. Assign an upstat room in the mission that can hold 20 to 50 peopleor make arrangements for an adequate space to accommodate this numberof public. Arrange for a "classroom style" seating setup, and a large videomonitor reserved for the workshop. Telex the date and location of yourworkshop to PDO 1-800 Unit info the Mission Consultaney Chief in yourSMI Continental Office.

PROMOTE THE WORKSHOP

4. INVITATION LETTER-Send an upstat cordial invitation letterout to all your book buyers and Dianetics video buyers from the pw-sondelivering the workshop so it arrives at least 3 weeks before theworkshop (see sample letter attached to this program). Make sure eachletter is printed on nice HDP letterhead paper and envelope and handsigned. The letter is sent first class.

5. "FREE PASS" POSTCARD

a) Send out a simple "Free Pass" post card to all your book buyersten days before the workshop by first class mail so that it gets to theperson one week before the workshop (see sample postcard attached tothis program).

b) Also print thousands of the "Free Pass" for handout to the generalpublic on the street.

6. BOOKBUYER CALL-IN-Assign call-in personnel and get call-in ofBookbuyers starting at least two weeks before the workshop inviting themto the workshop and reserving a seat for them. Put up a simple "Confirms"sheet that has two column next to each name, one column for confirmingand one for re-confirming (see call-in patter attached to this program).

7. BRIEF AND TARGET FSMs-Put posters up in the mission andannounce the workshop at the end of each course period for at least twoweeks before the workshop. Target each student and FSM to bring 1-2persons to the workshop and have them give you their selectees' names.Contact all the local groups and get them scheduled to attend the workshop.

8. Put up posters throughout the city announcing the workshop with atear-off part for the person to take with them, which has the place, address and time of the workshop.

22. Give a short introductory talk. Introduce yourself and describe whatthe Workshop will cover and what they will be doing. Include in thelecture a short talk on the Tone Scale, as the public will see differenttones displayed during the live session and in their own co-audit.

23. Show the video "How to Use Dianetics".

24. QUESTION AND ANSWER PERIOD (use DMSMH and theDianetics video as the key references).

25. It is stressed with attendees that "Dianetics is extremely simple" andANY auditing is better than no auditing and not to worry about messinganyone up. (Ref: The Mind's Protection, Chapter in DMSMH).

26. Prior to breaking for lunch, get all attendees grouped byarea and get them to form groups. Get the name and address ofeach group leader and who is in the group.

27. LUNCH 12 NOON-Break for lunch with mission staff accompanyingattendees to lunch, to answer questions and be terminals for them.

It is best for the mission to "host" the lunch, meaning you bring in abox lunch and have tables set up. This ensures the attendees stay inone location during lunch. Assign at least one staff member to eachtable to mingle with the attendees, answer their questions and reg them."Box lunches" are inexpensive and very acceptable.

This lunch room, which is usually adjacent to the main room, then actsas your registration room and as a room for surveys, success stories, etc., to be filled out after the co-audits end off.

28. LIVE DIANETICS DEMONSTRATION SESSION given by yourbest Book One Auditor following the "How To" command card exactly andONLY, which shows how simple Dianetics auditing is to do, and that itCAN be done.

Ensure you hand pick the pc and not use someone who volunteersrandomly. Ensure the pc is well genned in on the procedure prior to thedeITIO taking place.

29. Any further questions are answered after demo session. Keep theBook One Auditor on stage during this question and answer period. After this question and answer period, ask "How many of you wouldlike to receive a session from a professional Book One Auditor?"It should be the majority of the audience. Set a time for them toschedule appointments. This has proven very successful in sellingBook One intensives.

Tell the public they will now be auditing each other but AFTER theyfinish their auditing there is more of the workshop to be done.

30. AUDITING-attendees pair up and drill on doing Dianetics per theprocedure card and then they audit each other.

31. If any of the workshop attendees have back-off on co-auditing orfeel this is out gradient for them, get them using Self Analysis as alower gradient. Ref: Self Analysis, Chapter 10, "ProcessingSection" .

REGISTRATION

32. As the sessions are ending off have the public write After-Workshopquestionnaire and success story and route them to a Reg.

33. An all-hands Registration is worked out with staff who can regassigned on an all-hands basis so that everyone is seen aftercompleting a session in the workshop. This is vital and your sign-upswill be in direct ratio to the number of reges assigned and drilled.Use the attached Public Reg drill.

34. The Reges sign up every attendee for the Hubbard Dianetics Seminar, promoted to them as a supervised co-audit in the mission where they cancontinue their co-auditing.

35. IF the attendee is from far out of town (Le., 100-200 nliles or more),get them on to an Extension Course and encourage them to continue coauditing. Schedule them to come for a HDS in the future.

36. Promote to every attendee that professional Dianetics auditing isavailable in the mission as well and sign up those who reach for this.Note that your Book One Auditors should be circulating amongst theattendees per HCO INFORMATION LETTER of 18 Feb. 1961,MAGAZINES, OEC Vol 6, page 181: "If other staff members wanta fast way to raise units, drift into the Co-audit and the PE at thebreaks and simply tell people how fine the next step is, ,vhilemingling with them."-LRH

DIANETICS WORKSHOP FOLLOW-UP STEPS

37. Reges contact each attendee at his/her home and ensure they arecontinuing to co-audit at home (if distant from mission) or coming intothe mission for HDA if nearby and answer any questions or help themso they can get rolling on their co-auditing if they are bugged on this inany way.

38. Set up a Dianetics workshop to be delivered to each of the newDianetics Groups that were made and get these workshops delivered byyour mission's Div 6 staff, even if 3-4 people attend these in a group'shome.
