As we approach Spring,TRRC has a very exciting calendarlined up. We've just hosted anextremely successful Freezer FivesSeries, thanks to the efforts of Gerald Radlauer and BarbaraBrittan. If the number of runners at these races are indicators of thefuture attendance at our races, then we should have a banner year.Ifyou missed these events, then you missed some exciting runnersand great times, particularly Mike Slinsky's course record 25:08 inthe five miler.

Bob and Eileen Davis, along with Jim and Mary Whalenare working hard to have another set of successful St, Patrick's Da\Races. Owen McCrudden is out checking the mud and dirt for"Mudders and Grunters". There is a reason for me to be going overthese events that start the year. Taconic has hundreds of members.I'm asking each of you to actively participate in as many TRRCevents as possible. If you are in a racing mood, please race in aTaconic event, as opposed to other area races (great going to theTRRC members who passed on other races to do the FreezerFive's!). Ifyou are on the injured list, I hope you get well soon, butuntil then, why not call a race director and volunteer. If you can'tmake it on race day, then how about taking TRRC race flyers tolocal libraries, grocery stores, town halls, fitness clubs, doctor'soffices, tocal pubs, and especially, other local and not-so-localraces. Also, if you have any great ideas that you have from otherraces or your own brain trust...please share them with the racecoordinator Rich Nash at 248-6666.

This request for help is not only for races, but for all theon-going TRRC activities. This includes putting out water for theSaturday "pump house" morning runs, picking up a Taconicmember to take to a race who has no transportation, participatingin the NYRRC club race series, gathering information/submittingarticles for our award winning newsletter, and always representingTaconic as the great running club we are.

If you have any questions please call me at work 592-3 0 0 5 o r a t h o m e 2 4 4 - 8 5 4 4 .

One last note, we have negotiated an arrangement withSilk Screen Technologies of New Jersey to supply us with TRRClogo T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, and other accessories. Look fora mail order ad in a future newsletter. This is a new and excitingventure, for us so let's support it. We are also trying to book a BeerBrewing Week-end at Club Get Away in Connecticut in July, solook for more info ne.xt month.

See ya on the roads and HAPPY FEET.L e e

Led bsEmmy Stocker and Phil Richie, the female and male championsrespectively, many participants demonstrated the effects of diligentwinter training. Most of all. everyone involved seemed to enjoythemselves as they were reveling the prospects of warmer weatherahead. As usual, the cast of volunteers and overseers made cenain

that this race went off without a hitch. Due to an unexpectedlylarge tumout, several amusing scenarios took place. We had 100numbers, which figured to cover both races. It soon becamee v i d e n t t h a t t h i s w o u l d n ' t c o v e r t h i s o n e r a c e . A b o u t 2 5

participants would wear race numbers from the "Women'sDistance Festival." (We just developed a new way to promotefuture races; Mow about that?!) The shirts were used up. Medaland trophy distribution, which was planned to go 2 deep in eachage group due to an expected turnout of 50 people, had to beamended to go 3 deep. All third place finishers; patience is avirtue. Your medals are "in the mail." Too bad extra food isn't

coming with it. Supplies were promptly depleted and reports wereheard of mass starvation in FDR Park shortly after the race.Runners are very adaptive people, though, and all took it in stride.H o w n i c e !

Overall, it was a glorious day for a race. However, becautioned; Some cooler weather lies ahead. Enjoy the winter, if weever gel it. Once winter sets in (if it does), times will be slower tocover any given distance. In a way. this is some comfort, for anexcuse for a poor run is ever present. Once the snow melts for thelast time, so also melts any alibi for a tortoise-like performance.Keep on striding, my friends!

T r a c k W o r k o u t sTRRC will be conducting track workouts at Yorktown

High School, on Wednesday evenings at 6 P.M., beginning with thefirst week of Daylight Savings Time. Doug Miller has been kindenough to volunteer his time again. Doug will lead the workoutswhich are designed to improve your running through a variety ofinterval distances and intensities. These sessions are open toanyone interested in gaining speed, stamina and fitness. We arehoping to see a large turnout this season.

There are usually three groups, so you can train withothers at your own pace. It is likely that we will get a large turnout,so we will also need another volunteer to help with the timing ofthe groups. Contact Doug, or just show up and have some fun!

M e n ' s M a s t e r sBy Scott Abercrombie

1996 was another very successful year for our mastersteams, with victories in both the MAC and the NYRRC grandPrix series, The 50 Mile 8 Man Ocean to Sound Relay on LongIsland, and the Road Runners Club of America Cross CountryNationals. However, we are running a little lean right now. Theaverage age is over 45 (well over), with on-going defections toour Veterans 50's team. A few of us (me, in particular) don'texactly run with a full tank of gas anymore, either. Then again,we still field over 20 dedicated runners with some serious talentbelow the age of 45, and few approaching 50 whose running hasbeen oblivious to the aging process. We also have more thanenough team spirit to ensure a very fruitful 1997. Now, let'sfactor in all the open runners who turn 40 this year. In Mayalone, Roy Altman, Greg Diamond and Justin Kelley becomemasters runners. This process goes on all year, and before it'sover, we will have our largest and strongest team ever.

We will compete in both Grand Prix series, the Ocean

Team Updateto Sound Relay, the RRCA Cross Country Nationals, and thelOK Nationals again this year. If the interest is there, we mayalso send a team to the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay in NewHampshire again, as well. That's about 20 team events! It'simpossible to get the best runners to every one of these events.Average runners have made significant contributions to our teamvictories. This is particularly true in the NYRRC Grand Prix, which has 13 races this year. So, if you achieve mid-age statusthis year, and if you want to have some fun with it, then run withus. Call me at (914) 245-9629. Every month, team membersare contacted by either Ken Filmanski, Joe Porcaro, Jeff Purdy,Gary Steinel or me to see who is on board for the upcomingraces. That's a lot of time on the telephone, so over time, nameshave been dropped from the roster because of lack ofparticipation. If you ran with us in the past, but fell by thewayside, thanks to injury, illness, overtime, or whatever, thereinstatement process is easy: Just call! 1997 will be an excitingyea r.

TRRC's 50's Veterans Team Captures Tri-State Title AgainBy Rich Nash, 50's Team Captain

Back to back wins in the NYRRC Grand Prix Series - that's a feat in itself, as our team literally ran tovictory 119 to 72 points over our nearest competitors. We started off strong and finished strong, thanks tothe dedication of people like Jack Brennan (all 12 races and NYRRC nominee for 50's Runner of the Year)and many more. Again, we encountered a wee bit of rocky road along the path to victory.

The Northwind lOK and Snowflake 4M brought us first place victories, only to be followed bysecond place finishes in the Brooklyn Half and Queens Half to the super strong Westside Runners. We wereback on track with the Prospect Park 5M and Lincoln Hall 5M (first time ever a NYRRC Grand Prix SeriesRace was held outside the 5 Boroughs of New York - thanks NYRRC!) only to have Millrose AA nipping atour heels. The Club Team Championships in July would be our test. We were out in force, but to no availas we fell to second in this and third in the Hispanic Half-Marathon. Was defeat on the horizon? No way!!Once again, our team spirit rose to the occasion, taking the Fred Lebow 5K and Norway 5K runs. Next upsaw the wild and crazy New York City Marathon! Through adversity and injury, we still managed to pull offa solid fourth. (By the way, if you have any aspirations of running the 1997 New York City Marathon, please contact Lee Saroken or me ASAP! Our finale of the year came with the Hot Chocolate lOM, and didwe ever need a cup of energy as we finished third. Exhausted, we took our weary bones home with a solidified victorious season.

My eternal thanks and appreciation go to the 36 team members who gave their bodies and souls, dedicating themselves for the team through injury, adversity, training, and setbacks. Freezer 5M Has A Great Day!By Katy D. Quinn

The Freezer 5's launch the TRRC race season each yearand, due to the unpredictable nature of February weather in NewYork, bring with them many questions for the race directors andthe racers. Will the back trail be too covered with snow and ice touse? Will there be new fallen snow that needs to be plowed? Willthere be any firewood available? Will the runners show up?

This year, the answers were good ones (unless you're oneof the folks that think Freezer 5's medio be freezing and icy!).The back trail was too messy to use, but the weather was beautifulfor both races. There was no snow and very little ice to contendwith. Firewood was ample, and the field of runners was biggerthan ever. Not only that, FAST runners showed up, and recordsfell. Mike Slinsky clocked an impressive 25:08 on the 5M coursethat this year included a trip from Parking Lot 1 to the "flagpole,"back through the inside loop and once more around the inner loop.

Gerry Radlauer and Barbara Brittan teamed up as racedirectors to set up two fun races for over I GO entrants in each race, and TRRC volunteers again turned out in ample numbers andenthusiasm to assure successful events. The fans were asenthusiastic in welcoming the last finishers as they were incheering the winners across the line, and smiles abounded. That'swhat TRRC events are about.

TRRC Women's TeamsRace Report-1997By Deb Kenney

Our first NYRRC race of the year was the NorthwindlOK which took place January 19th. At the start of the race, thetemperature was -9 degrees with the wind chill, and it was brutal. You certainly wouldn't fault anyone for not wanting to run a raceon this day! However, Taconic women are tough. The followinghearty souls showed up and ran the race: Beth-Anne Cincotta44:02, Debra Kenney 44:42, Nancy Young 47:28, Carol Hanson48:36, and Joanne Bertram 57:08.

The Snowflake 4M was held on February 22nd, and wasour second race of the season. If anyone had told me back at theNorthwind lOK that the temperature at the Snowflake 4 Milerwould be 60 with a 96% humidity level, I would have thought theywere nuts.. .probably too much beer. But.. .that's exactly what thetemperature was. I have never seen Central Park so crowded withrunners, cyclists and roller-bladers. Approximately 2,000 plusrunners started the race, with about 1800 finishers. The womenrunners were Barbara Brittan 25:25, Beth-Anne Cincotta 27:49,Debra Kenney 27:50, Robin Maloney 28:52, Melanie Benvenue29:02, Kate Glynn 29:31 (It was so great to have you back with us,Kate!), Lauren Logan 32:48, Carolyn Subin 33:43 and BridgetPorteus 39:28. Bridget is our newest runner. She is at the verybeginning of her running, with a low weekly mileage, but I askedher at the last Taconic meeting if she would like to run the 4 milerwith us. Bridget said yes, and Bridget, I know it's tough runningyour first race (many of us probably remember our first raceexperience?!?) And I admire your courage! We all gathered at thefinish line, waiting for Bridget and gave her a typically loud rowdyTaconic yell when she reached the finish line! I am always proudof the Taconic women who participate in our races. They supportand root for each other!

Thanks to all the women who ran the January andFebruary races. If there are any women who would like to comeand join us, give any of the captains a call. We would love tohave you run with us.

Leonard Edelen, 59, A RunnerTo R e m e m b e rThis editor noted this obituary in the 2/23/97 New York Times and

found it of interest. Perhaps you will too. (As a South Dakotan, Iam especially proud to learn of the contribution of the residentsof Sioux Falls, SD!)Excerpted from the New York Times. 2/23/97:

Leonard (Buddy Edelen Jr., the first American marathonerin nearly four decades to set a world record, died of cancer inTulsa, Okla., on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997. He was 59.

Edelen cut 48 seconds off the world record when he wonBritain's Polytechnic Marathon, covering the 26 miles 385 yardsin 2 hours 14 minutes 28 seconds on June 15,1963. It was the firstmarathon record by an American since Albert Michelsen ran2:29:02 in 1925. Afterward, Edelen was called "America's greathope" for a gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.But a sciatic nerve condition caused him severe back pains, and hefinished sixth. Edelen ran 13 more marathons, winning 7. Hestopped competing at age 28.

In the four years leading up to the 1964 Olympics, Edelenmade $120 a month teaching in a private school in England andlived in a one-room apartment with no telephone and norefrigerator. When he lacked the $650 needed to go to the UnitedStates for the 1964 Olympic trials, youngsters in a Y.M.C.A. inSioux Falls, S.D. - the city where Edelen spent part of hischildhood - raised the money through car washes, dances, basketball games and donations.

"1 was about 13 years too early," he said, reflecting on themoney that became available to top marathoners. Edelen's traininghabits also stood out in contrast with the austere regimens used byother runners. He drank beer nightly and smoked a cigaretteoccasionally, although he logged 130 miles a week. "Think howgood 1 might be if 1 didn't have these vices, he once mused.

As his running career was winding down, Edelen earned amaster's degree in psychology at Adams State College in Alamosa,Colo., and went on to teach psychology at the school. He laterworked as a promotions coordinator for Pepsi-Cola BottlingCompany in Tulsa and for the state Department of HumanServ ices.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda; a son. Brent; fourstepchildren, Yvonne Allen, Cindy Marsh, Teresa Waszut andClaudia Brashears, and 10 grandchildren.
