1963, Corvette hit the road with an eye-catching new

look -- the S ting Ray coupe. An instant success, the

and a un ique split rear window. The split window would

only be o ffered in 1963, making this model among the

Restyled inside and o ut for 1968, this 'Vette sported

    a

lean and hungry shape, creating a sense of motion even

when standing still. And for the first time, Corvette

    offered removable roof panels.

Your vehicle has a light that comes on asa reminder to

buck le up. (See Safety Belt Rem inder Light in the

    Index.)

A few crashes are mild, and som e crashes can be

    so

serious that even buckled up a person wouldnt survive.

But m ost crashes are in between. In many of them,

people whobuckle up can survive and sometimes walk

away. W ithout belts they cou ld have been badly hurt or

    killed.

    After more than

    25

years of safety belts in vehicles,

the facts are clear. In m ost crashes buckling up does

    matter ...a lot

    Why Safety BeltsWork

W hen you ride in or on nything, you go as fast as t

    goes.

In many states and Canadian provinces,

    the

    law says

    to

wear safety belts. H eres why : They work.

You never know if youll be in a crash. If you do have a

crash, you do nt know if it will be a bad one.

Here Are Questions Many People Ask

About Safety Belts - and the Answers

@ Wont I be trapped in the vehicle after an

    accident if Im wearing

    a

    safety belt?

A: You could be -- whether youre wearing a safety

belt or not. Bu t you can unbuck le a safety belt,

even if youre upside dow n. And your chance of

being conscious during and after an accident, so

you can unbuckle and get o ut, is uch greater if

    you a re belted.

    @

Why dont they just putn air bags so people

    A:

Air bags are in many vehicles today and will be in

more of them in the future. But they are

    supplemental systems only;

    so

    they work

    with

    safety belts

    --

not instead of them. Every air bag

system ever offered for sale has equired the use of

safety belts. ,Even if youre in a ve hicle that has air

bags , you still have to buckle up to get he most

protection. Thats true not on ly in frontal collisions,

bu t especially in side and other collisions.

wont have to wear safety belts?

QC If Im a good driver, and I never drive far from

A: You may b e an ex cellent driver, but if youre in an

home, why should wear safety belts?

accident -- even one that isnt your fault -- you and

your passenger can be hurt. Being a good driver

doesnt protect you from things beyon d your

    control, such as bad drivers.

    Most accidents occur within

    25

    miles (40kmof

home. And the greatest number of serious injuries and

    deaths

    OCCUT

    at speeds of less than

    40

    mph (65

    km/h).

    Safety belts

    are

    for everyone.

How to Wear Safety Belts Properly

    Adults

Th is part is only for people of adult size.

Be aw are that there are special things to know about

safety belts and children. A nd there are different rules for

smaller children and babies. If a child will be ridingn

your Corvette, see the part of this manual called

Children. Follow those rules for everyones p rotection.

First, youll wan t to know which restraint systems your

    vehicle has.

Well start with the driver position.

    1-10

    Driver Position

This part describes the rivers restraint system.

    Lap-ShoulderBelt

The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Heres how to wear it

    properly.

    1.

    Close and lock the door.

    2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see Seats

    in

    the Index)

so you can sit up straight.

    3.

    1-1

  • 7/25/2019 1995 Corvette

    23/386

The lappart of the belt should be

    worn

    low and

    snug

    on

the hips, ust touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies

force to the trong pelvic bones. And youd be less

likely to slide und er the lap belt. If

    you

    slid under it, the

belt would apply force at your abdomen. This could

cause serious or even atal injuries. The shoulder belt

    should

    go

over the shoulder and across the chest. Th ese

    parts

of the body are best able to take belt restraining

    forces.

Th e safety belt locks if theres a sudden stop or crash.

If you do not want the lap belt o move freely, push the

    cinch button.

    To

    Where is the air bag?

The driver 'sair bag is in he middle of the steering

wheel. The passenger's air bag is in the instrum entpanel

    on the passenger's side.

    1-19

    When shouldan air bag inflate?

What makes an air ag inflate?

  • 7/25/2019 1995 Corvette

    31/386

The airbag is designed to inflate in moderate to severe

frontal ornear-frontal crashe s. The air ag will inflate

    only

    if

the impact speed is above the systems designed

thresho ld level. If your vehicle goes straight into a

wall that doesnt move or deform, the hreshold level is

    about 9 to 15 mph (14 to 24

    km/h).

    The threshold level

can vary, however, w ith specific vehic le design ,

    o

    that

it can be omewhat above or below

    this

    range.

    If

    your

vehicle strikessomething that will move or deform, such

as a parkedcar, the threshold leve l will be higher. The

air bag is not designed to inflate in rollovers , ide

impa cts, or ear impacts, because inflation ould not

    help theoccupant.

It is possible hat in a crashonly o ne of the two air bags

    in your Corvette will deploy.

    This

    is rare,but can

happen in a crash just severe enough to make an air bag

    inflate.

In any particular crash,no one cansay whether an air

bag should have inflated simply because of the dam age

to a vehic le or ecause of what the repair costs ere.

Inflation is determined by the angleof the impactand

the vehicles deceleration. Vehicle dam age is only one

    indication of this.

In a fron tal or ear-fron tal impact of sufficien t severity,

the airbag sensing system detects that the vehicle is

suddenly stopping as a esult of a crash. The sensing

system triggers achem ical reaction of the sodium azide

sealed in the inflator. The reaction produces nitrogen

gas, which inflates theair bag. The in flator, air bag , and

related hardware are all part of the air bag modules

packed inside the steering wheel and in he instrument

pane l in front of the passenger.

How does an air bag restrain?

In m oderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions,

even belted o ccup ants can contact the steering wheel or

the instrument panel. The air bag supplementshe

pro tectio n prov ided by safety belts. Air bags istribute

the forceof the impactmore evenly over the occupants

upper body, stopping the occupant more gradually. But

air bags w ould not help you in many types of collisions,

includ ing rollovers and rear and side impacts, primarily

    because an occupan ts motion

    is

    not toward he air bag.

Air bags should never be regarded

    as

    anything more

than a supplement to safety belts, and then only in

moderate tosevere frontal or near-frontal collisions.

    What

    will you

    see afteran air bag inflates?

After the air bag inflates, it quickly deflates. This occurs

so quickly that some people may not even realize the air

bag inflated. Some comp onents of the air bag m odule in

the steering wheel hub for the drivers air bag, o r the

instrument panel for the passengers bag, will be hot fo r

a short time, but he part of the bag that comes into

contact with you will not e hot to the touch. There will

be som e smoke and dust coming from vents in the

deflated air bags. Air bag inflation will not preven t the

driver from seeing or from being able to steer the

vehicle, nor will t stop people from leaving the vehicle.

In many c rashes severe enough to inflate an air bag,

windshields are broken by vehicle deformation.

Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the

    passenger air bag.

    0

    0

    0

The air bags are designed to inflate only once. After

they inflate, youll need som e new parts for your air

bag system . If you dont get them, the air bag system

won t be there to help protect you in another c rash.

A new system w ill include air bag modules and

possibly other parts. The service manual fo r your

vehicle covers the need to replace other parts.

Your vehicle is equipped with a diagno stic module,

which records information abou t the air bag system.

The module records information about the readiness

    of

the system, when the sensors are activated and

drivers safety belt usage at deploym ent.

    Let only qualified technicians work

    on

    your air bag

system. Improper service can mean that your air bag

system wont work properly. See you r dealer for

    service.

    NOTICE:

    If

you damage the cover for the drivers or the

passengers air bag, they may not work properly.

You may have to replace the ai r bag module in

    Servicing Your Air Bag-Equipped Corvette

Air bags affect how your Corvette should be serviced.

There are parts of the airbag system in several places

around yo ur vehicle. You do nt want the system to

inflate while someo ne is working on your ve hicle. Your

Chevrolet dealer and the 1995 Corvette Service Manual

have information about servicing our vehicle and the

air bag system. To purchase a servicemanual, see

    Service Publications inhe Index.

The airbag system does not need regular maintenance.

    Safety Belt Use During Pregnancy

Safety belts work for everyone, including preg nant

women. Like all occupants, they are mo re likely to be

seriously injured if they do nt wear s afety belts.

A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and

the lap portion should be worn as low as possib le

    throughout the pregnancy.

The best way to protect he fetus is to protect the

mother. When a sa fety belt is

    worn

    properly, its more

likely that the fetus won t be hurt

    in

    a crash. For

pregnant women, as for anyone, he key to making

    safety belts effective

    is

    wearing them properly.

    Passenger Position

The passengers safety belt works the sam e way as the

drivers safety belt. See Driver Position, earlier in this

    section.

    Children

Everyone in a vehicle needs protection That includes

infants and all children sma ller than adult size.

    In

    fact,

the law in every state n the United States and in every

Canadian province sayschildren up to some

    age

    must be

    Child Restraints

Be sure to follow the instructions for the restraint. You

may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a

booklet, or both. These restraints use the belt system

    in

your vehicle, but the child also has to be secured w ithin

the restraint to help reduce the c hance of personal injury

The instructions that com e with the child restraint w ill

show you how to do that. The child restraint m ust be

secured properly in the passenger seat.

Keep in mind thatan unsecured child restraint can move

around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in

the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child

restraint in your vehicle -- even when n o child is in it.

    Top Strap

Som e child restraints have a top strap. Dont use a

restraint like that in your vehicle because the top strap

anchor ca nnot be installed properly. You shouldnt use

this type of child restraint without anch oring the top

    strap.

    Checking Your Restraint Systems

  • 7/25/2019 1995 Corvette

    41/386

If the vehicles safety belt will fasten around you , you

    should use it.

But if a safety belt isnt long enough to fasten, your

dealer will order you an extender. Its free. W hen you go

in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the

extender w ill be long enoug h for you. The extender w ill

be just forou, and just for he seat in your vehicle that

you c hoose. Do nt let someone else use it, and use it

only for the seat it ismade to fit. To wear it, just attach it

    to theregular safety belt.

Now and then, ma ke sure all your belts, buckles, latch

plates, retractors, anchorages and reminder systems are

working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged

restraint system parts. If you see anything that might

keep a restraint system from doing its job, have it

    repaired.

Tom or frayed belts may not protect you n a crash.

They can rip apart under impact forces. If a belt s torn

or frayed, get a new o ne right away.

    Replacing Seatand Restraint System

    Parts After a Crash

    If

youve had a crash, do you need new belts?

After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary.

But if the belts were stretched, as they w ould be if worn

    during

    a

more severe crash, then you need new belts.

If you ever see a label on the passengers safety belt that

says to replace the belt, be sure to o so. Then the new

belt will be there to help protect you in an accid ent. You

would see this label on the b elt near the latch plate.

If belts are cut or amaged , replace them . Collision

damage also may mean you will need to have safety be

or seat parts repaired or replaced. New parts and re pairs

may b e necessary even if the belt wasnt being used at

    the timeof the collision.

    theft-deterrent system.

    PASS-Key is a passive

    theft-deterrent system.

It works w hen you insert or remove the key from the

key th at matches a decoder in your vehicle.

When thePASS-Key system senses that someone is

using the wrong key, it shuts down the vehicles starter

and fuelsystems. For about three minutes,he starter

during this time , the shutdow n period will start over

again. This discourages omeone from randomly trying

different keys with different resistor pellets in an a ttempt

    to make a match.

The ign ition key m ust be clean and dry before its

inserted in the ignition r the engine may not start. If the

SECU RITY light comes on, the key may be dirty or

    wet.

If this happens and the starter wont work, turn he

ignition off. Clean and dry the key, wait three minutes

and try again. If the starter still wont w ork, wait three

minutes and try the other ignition key. At this ime, you

may also want to ch eck the fuses (see Fuses and Circuit

Breakers in the Index). If the starter wont work with

the other key, your vehicle needs service. If your vehicle
