Deacons Eye More Success in '93 Wake Forest Football has a new look and a

new confidence entering the 1993 season. The new look, of course, involves first-year

head coach Jim Caldwell, who came to Wake Forest last December to replace the retiring Bill Dooley. Caldwell's credentials are outstand ing. He has worked under some of the nation's premier coaches, most recently spending the last seven years at Perm State on Joe Paterno's staff. Caldwell also has served as an assistant at

Louisville (under Howard Schnellenberger), Colorado (Bill McCartney), Northwestern (Dennis Green) and Southern Illinois (Rey Dempsey) in preparing for his first head coaching assignment. The new confidence that Caldwell has in

herited at Wake Forest comes from a tremen dous 1992 season, in which the Deacons won six straight games (the second-longest win ning streak in school history) and compiled an 8-4 overall record, their best since 1979. The year featured, of course, a dramatic 39-35 vic tory over Oregon in the Independence Bowl only the second postseason win ever at WFU. Continuing that level of success will be a

challenge for Caldwell and his staff, but one that he has accepted enthusiastically. "When a program has had an opportunity

to experience success, such as the success our players experienced last season, they acquire self-confidence and a great sense of accom plishment," Caldwell says. "Once they get a taste of success, they're looking for the next level. That's what we will attempt to do-raise their level of expectation. "Our spring practice went extremely well.

The attitude of the team was super, and most importantly, I felt that we improved in a num ber of areas from our first practice in March until our final workout in April:' Caldwell will have 42 lettermen returning

from the 1992 squad. Only 10 of those are starters, however, six on offense and just four on the defensive side. Last year's seniors included an All-America

tackle (Ben Coleman), a three-time all-league tight end (John Henry Mills) and a two-year starting quarterback (Keith West) on the offensive side. On defense, a number of new faces will be in

starting roles with the departure of seven seniors, all of whom played key roles in last season's success. Two-time all-league corner back George Coghill, along with four-year starters Lamont Scales and Ron Lambert, are gone from the secondary. Ends Mike McCrary (the ACC sack leader) and Maurice Miller, both All-ACC 2nd-team selections, line backer Scott Shelhamer and tackle Rudy Thompson have departed as well.

Receivers Offensively, the '93 outlook is highlighted

by the return of All-America candidate TODD

6

Linebacker KEVJN GJLE:J is the Znd-leading tackler returning in the ACC.

DIXON (5'11, 173, Sr), one of the most explo sive wide receivers in the country the past two years. Dixon was named the outstanding of fensive player in the Independence Bowl after scoring twice and totaling 166 yards on five receptions. In three years, Dixon has averaged an out

standing 18.0 yards per catch on 106 career receptions. On 20 touchdown plays, he has been even more incredible, averaging 40.9 yards per catch. He has a streak of 25 consecu tive games with at least one reception and caught two passes or more in every outing last fall on his way to All-ACC honors.

The Deacons obviously do not have an other individual who can match Dixon's num bers, but there is plenty of talent among the receiving corps elsewhere. ROGER PETTUS (6'0, 188, Jr) was enjoy

ing a fine 1992 season until being slowed by an ankle injury, while MARLON ESTES (5'11, 195, Jr) and TRAVIS JOHNS (6'3,1 96, Sr) proved their value during the latter stages of the '92 schedule with some key receptions. Pettus had one touchdown catch in the '93 Spring Game and Estes had two. All three receivers will be players to watch this fall. At tight end, the burden of replacing three-

Page 4: 1993 WAKE FOREST ROSTER

time All-ACC performer John Henry Mills falls to WALTER RASBY (6' 4, 249, Sr), an ex perienced player but one without eye-catching statistics. Rasby, one of the program's most gifted all-around athletes, has lettered three straight years as a backup and short-yardage situation tight end. His role will expand con siderably this season.

Running Backs Another strongpoint of the offense should

be running back where four proven perform ers are back. Tailbacks JOHN LEACH (5'9, 213, Sr) and

NED MOULTRIE (5'9, 184, Sr) combined for nearly 1,300 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in sharing that position last season. Leach, one of the ACC's most versatile backs, was slowed by a midseason leg injury but returned to full speed for the Independence Bowl where he ran for 116 yards. Moultrie's 149-yard outburst against Army was the highest single game total by a Deacon runner in six years and helped him average 95.4 yards per game in the final five regular season dates.

The team's top two fullbacks, MITCH KEN NEDY (5'10, 235, Sr) and WENDELL WELLS (5'11, 215, Jr) also return. Both are outstand ing blockers and can produce yardage on their own as well, especially Wells who gained 276 yards on just 53 carries (5.2 per) and averaged 21.7 yards per play on seven pass receptions.

Young running backs to watch are STACIE GRESHMAN (6'1, 221, rFr), the top rusher in the '93 Spring Game when he scored twice (runs of 65 yards and one yard) and totaled 78

yards on only seven carries; and CARDELL CHAVIS (5'10, 212, So), who lettered asa true freshman at fullback and on special teams.

Offensive Line Three starters return in the offensive line

center EDDIE McKEEL (6'2, 266, Jr), guard KEVIN SMITH (6'4, 255, Sr) and tackle

All-America candidate TODD DIXON has explosive qualities as a receiver and with his elusiveness as a runnel'.

ELTON NDOMA-OGAR (6'2, 270, So) That trio combined to start 32 contests last fall and were instrumental in Wake Forest's 1992 success.

Gone from the offensive front, though, are All-America tackle Ben Coleman and guard Tommy Mordica, a starter in 37 straight con tests, leaving major holes to fill.

Veteran DAVID LOWE (6'7, 295, Sr) should move into one of those slots after an injury plagued '92. He started all 11 games in 1991 be fore losing his spot to Coleman. Guard REG GIE AVERY (6'1, 295, Jr) is the only other letterman on the offensive front. A number of young and inexperienced linemen are anxious to contribute. Some will undoubtedly have that opportunity this year.

Quarterbacks The most observed newcomer to the start

ing lineup in 1993 figures to be at quarterback with the departure of two-year regular Keith West. RUSTY LARUE (6'2, 182, So) and JIM KEMP (6'1, 194, Sr) shared the backup role behind West a year ago and battled for the top spot during the spring as they adjusted to a dif ferent offensive scheme. Both individuals are outstanding field leaders and adapted quickly to the new offensive system.

LaRue missed some early offseason work outs while with the Demon Deacon basketball team, but turned in an impressive Spring Game, completing 14-of-25 passes for 272 yards and a pair of scores. He was listed as the starting QB at the conclusion of the spring but will need to maintain a high level of play to stay ahead of the veteran Kemp.

Walkon ADAM DOLDER (6'2, 185, So) turned in a solid spring season and is the number-three quarterback entering preseason drills.

The one-two running back tandem of JOHN LEACH (above) and NED MOULTRIE (left) is a Deacon strongpoint.

7

Page 5: 1993 WAKE FOREST ROSTER

Defensive Line Only four starters are back on the Deacon

defensive unit, but two solid returnees repre sent half of that group on the defensive line. Tackle OREO BOOE (6'2, 279, Sr) and end

JAY WILLIAMS (6' 4, 267, Sr) figure to be leaders on defense after each started all 12 games last fall. Booe collected 73 tackles, in cluding five sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss in '92, while Williams totaled 42 stops. Williams moved during the spring from

tackle to end, actually exchanging positions with another Williams, Scott (6' 3, 241, Jr), who is a probable starter on the inside of the defensive front after lettering two straight years at end. The other starting spot among the front four will likely go to either RICK GARDNER (6'3, 245, So) or WILLIE HALL (6'2, 257, Jr). Both lettered last season and were set to battle for a first-string position dur ing the spring until Hall was sidelined with a broken leg. Depth is a concern on the line with soph

ANDRE MASON (6'1, 292) and redshirt freshmen STEVE VAUGHAN (6' 5, 266), MARTIN KUSER (6'3, 296) and HAROLD GRAGG (6' 4,244) the top reserves.

DRED BOOE (above) 1s the top returning defensive lineman for the Deacs. Two other 1992 starters are RICHARD GOODPASTURE (#28, applying a hit below) and lineman JAY WILLIAMS (#91, moving in to assist).

Linebackers A major bright spot is at linebacker where

last year's leading tackler, KEVIN GILES ( 6' 0, 216, Jr) is back after making 124 tackles in 11 games (11.3 per) last year. That was the third highest total in the ACC and gives Wake the 2nd-leading returning tackler in the confer ence this fall. What he lacks in size, Giles more than compensates for with his aggressiveness, instincts and desire. He's a good one.

MIKE NEUBEISER (6'2, 212, Jr) and DI RON REYNOLDS (6'2, 237, Sr) are lettermen who may contribute at the inside spots as well. Reynolds, a parttime starter earlier in his ca reer, appeared to have an edge for the top spot beside Giles after spring practice. The top tacklers in the '93 Spring Game

were two young linebackers, TUCKER GRACE (6'1, 224, So) and AUSTIN CROW DER (6'0, 252, So), each with six stops. They, along with JONES HOLCOMB ( 6' 1, 198, So), should provide inside depth this fall. At the "Demon" linebacker, any of three

players could contribute. Veteran GLEEN HART (6'3, 208, Sr) is the most experienced (three letters) but JIMMY QUANDER (6'3, 228, Jr)and TIM JOHNSON (6'1, 193, So) are talented, too, making this one of the deeper positions on the entire squad.

Defensive Backs The secondary, with the loss of three

starters, must undergo some rebuilding, but a couple of fine young players are on hand to begin that reconstruction.

RICHARD GOODPASTURE (5'11, 187, Jr) made 62 tackles last season and was having an excellent year until being slowed by a knee injury. His replacement, KEVIN COLE (6'2, 185, Sr), played very well during the 1992 stretch drive, making five interceptions in five starting assignments. With the return of a healthy Goodpasture at "Rover" (strong safety), Cole figures to become number-one at free safety. The two starting cornerback slots could be

filled by any of a number of individuals, most of them youngsters. TIM HAILSTOCK (5'9, 180, Jr), a two-year letterman, and BRENT MOREHEAD, last year's "nickel-back;' are the most experienced of that group. ALEXIS SOCKWELL (6'2, 180, So), TOM STUET ZER (5' 11, 186, rFr) and transplanted running backs SHERRON GUDGER (5'8, 177, So) and LaDWAUN HARRISON (5'10, 203, rFr) all will contend for playing time, too.

Kickers The kicking game belongs to veteran MIKE

GREEN (5'11, 202, Sr), who has converted 25 of 35 field goal tries the past two years. Last season he handled the punting chores, averag ing 37.0 yards per boot, and could take over kickoffs as well this fall. No other scholarship players are listed as

kickers on the preseason roster except for in coming freshman BILL HOL1DWS ( 6' 1, 205).

The Schedule The 1993 schedule includes six home games

for the Deacons, one more than a year ago, and league dates in Groves Stadium with N.C State, Duke, Georgia Tech and Maryland. Jn non-ACC play, Wake will host Vanderbilt and familiar foe Appalachian State, while travel ing to Northwestern. The conference road slate is a particularly

demanding one with trips to national power Florida State and top 20 contenders North Carolina, Clemson and Virginia.

#59 Greg McCracken 6'4 250 So. Waynesville, NC Offensive Lineman

Potentially, a good young player in the offensive line. . . spent time at both center and guard thus far in his career, though

will begin 1993 at the latter position ... worked there during the spring and was enjoying a positive offseason until suffering a bad ankle sprain ... missed valuable practice time thereafter which will affect his beginning slot on the depth chart in August ... contending with other youthful linemen for a top reserve spot behind returning starter Kevin Smith ... has above-average speed but must maintain his work in the weightroom to improve his overall strength ... has added nearly 30 pounds to his frame since enrolling at WFU was redshirted in 1991 and began last year as a reserve center played briefly at guard in a couple of 1992 contests ... could develop into a quality player with con tinued hard work. HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Earned numerous honors

during his career at Tuscola High. . . the starting center in the 1990 Shrine Bowl and was also selected for the 1991 East-West all-star contest. .. had to miss that affair, however, because of a shoulder injury ... served as captain of his football squad as a senior while earning all-western North Carolina honors under coach Doug Brooks. . . standout in field events for the track squad, too, lettering two years and being named team MVP as a junior. . . gained recognition for his classroom work, too, earning membership in the National Honor Society ... a health/sports science major. .. age 20 (12/13/72).

#54 Eddie McKeel 6' 2 266 Jr. lVL Vanceboro, NC Center

Last year's Demon Deacon success story would need a special chapter for this individual, who emerged from the back

ground into a position of prominence in 1992. . . early season shoulder injury to starting center Mike Siders provided him the

opportunity to prove himself as a player and he became much more than just a fill-in ... started 10 consecutive contests at cen ter and was one of the team's most reliable and consistent players ... improved week-by-week as he gained the game experience that he didn't have prior to the season ... kept right on develop ing this past spring, impressing his new coaches with his work ethic and skills. . . a strong and focused worker in strength training off the field ... has become a leader on the offensive line and will be counted on in that regard this fall ... also should be one of the quality performers on the Deacon offensive unit in '93.

1992: Began the schedule as the number-two center ... played briefly in opener against North Carolina, then saw no action the following week vs App State ... started for the first time in his career at Florida State and played all 75 plays in that game ... also was in for every offensive snap against Virginia, Maryland, Duke and Georgia Tech ... earned "Winners Circle" status six times in his 10 starts on the year.

PRE-1992: Served a redshirt year in 1990 ... earned the top reserve spot behind Siders in '91 and gained some playing time, usually in late-game situations ... played in five games total that year, but not enough to earn a varsity letter.

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: Product of fine program at West Craven High. . . tutored there by coach Clay Jordan. . . started as both a junior and senior and earned numerous honors during his final season ... selected to both the Shrine Bowl and the North Carolina East-West all-star contest. .. standout member of the wrestling team at West Craven as well. . .like many eastern North Carolinians, has spent his summers work ing in tobacco fields for offseason work. . . majoring in health I sports science at Wake Forest. . . will be 21 early in the season (9/20/72).

#95 Matt McNeel 6'4 228 Jr. Cross Lanes, WV Tight End

Hard-working and talented receiver whose progress throughout his career at Wake Forest has been slowed con

siderably by some physical troubles ... underwent knee surgery upon his arrival at Wake Forest in the fall of 1989 and missed contact work for more than a year after that procedure. . . ac tually did not join the active roster until 1990 and was redshirted that season. . . first scrimmage experience did not come until the spring of 1992, and that activity was limited ... turned in his most productive practice period at WFU this past spring. . . dis played a good pair of hands and has the needed size to be an ef fective tight end ... obviously, lacks the necessary experience-
