1993 Season Preview

Head Coach Penny Lucas-White looksforward to the 1993 season.

Gone are the days of youthful Inexperience. Aseasoned Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball teamwill take the court in 1993.

"Last year was a very difficult season for all of us,"explained third-year head coach Penny Lucas-White."Everyone came back in the spring with a new attitudeand we had an excellent spring season. I believe wecan accomplish anything we want if we put our mindsto it."

The 1992 Lady Tiger squad featured two juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen. All receivedample playing time and have learned coach Lucas-White's system.

Amy Greer and Sami Randolph, both seniors, willassume the leadership role for the 1993 squad.

When Lucas-White talks about her two seniorsshe believes that they will carry the team. She also saidthat, "There comes a point in ones career, where thewill to win is mind over matter. I think these twoplayers really want to win."

Greer, a 5-11, outside hitter, did not have theluxury to play that position last season. The India-napolis, Ind., native, was called upon to set for theLady Tigers last season. She led the squad with 737assists and 43 service aces. Greer also ranked third inblock assists with 52.

"Amy did not play during the spring season be-cause of shoulder surgery. This summer she workedin a warehouse and did a lot of lifting and said hershoulder was feeling great," Lucas-White said.

Despite her 5-8 frame, Randolph plays both frontand back row very effectively. She ranked second onthe squad with 321 digs and fourth in kills with 197.

"Sami loves the game and is always willing to playwhere we need her. She can pass or hit the ball and iseven a good server," explained Lucas-White.

The Junior class of the 1993 Lady Tigers is very

experienced.Renee Ross, a 5-9 outside hitter, was second-team

All-Great Midwest Conference selection in 1992. Dur-ing the conference championships last year, Ross seta new single game career kill mark with 25. For herefforts during that tournament, she earned All-Tour-nament honors. Ross led the squad with 335 kills and382 digs. She also ranked third on the squad with 30service aces.

"Renee is a very powerful player who sometimeslacks finess. She is also the type of player you cancount on when you need a good pass," White said.

Cherilyn Bright, saw a lot of playing time lastseason. The 5-11 middle hitter played in all 36 matcheslast season and ranked third on the team with 244kills. During the Great Midwest Championships, shehad a career-high 22 kills versus Marquette.

"Cherilyn is a very consistent hitter. She playedextremely well during the conference championshipsand had a good spring season," said Lucas-White.

A player that really made strides in 1992 was junioroutside hitter Jamie Runkle. The 5-7, Peru, Ind.,native earned all-toumament honors atTulane's KathyTrosclair Memorial Tournament. Most of her playingtime has been in the back row but Lucas-White expectsto play Runkle in the front row more in 1993.

"Jamie really turned the corner during the springseason. Despite her size, she can really jump. She is abig asset in the back row for us, but this spring shebecame invaluable up front," explained Lucas-White.

The 1992 freshman class grew up quickly as theywere called upon on numerous occasions.

Monique Swaby, a 6-0 middle blocker earned GreatMidwest All-Freshman team honors. She was theteam's second leading hitter with 290 kills and led the

Senior Amy Greer will reassume heroutside hitter position.

1993 Season Preview

Renee Ross earned second-team All-GreatMidwest Conference.

squad with a .202 kill percentage. Swaby also was theLady Tiger's top block assist player with 65.

"I really wish I could play Monique outside be-cause she can really hit the ball. However, because sheis such a tough blocker Monique is invaluable for usin the middle," stated Lucas-White.

Jacqueline Mack saw action in all 36 matches in1992. The 5-11 middle blocker led the team with 13block solos, and added 55 block assists which rankedsecond on the squad.

Lucas-White said that, "Monique really turned thecorner during the conference championships. Shehas worked on her strength and it really showedduring the spring season."

Janice Neyens, a 5-8 setter gained a lot of experi-ence during the spring season. During the fall sched-ule, Neyens played a back-up position to Greer. Shedid however, rank second on the team with 533assists.

"Janice really came around in the spring season. She carried the weight of being the team setter and hasbecome very stable and consistent in her role as theteam's quarterback," Lucas-White explained.

One player that became notable better over timewas sophomore Deidre Rowell. The 5-10 outside/middle hitter played outstanding during the confer-ence tournament.

"Deidre continued to improve in the spring andpasses extremely well. She gives us everything thatshe has got," said Lucas-White.

The Lady Tigers needed help in the middle and atthe setter position in 1993 and that is exactly whatthey got with the addition of their three freshmen.

Heather Fletcher is a 6-0 middle/outside hitterfrom Richardson, Tex. She helped lead her 1992 L.V.Berkner High School squad to a 27-6 record and thechampionship of the Bi-District Area. That same squadwas a semi-finalist at the State 5A Region II Tourna-ment.

Also playing in the middle will be Allwyn Fitzpatrick,5-11. The Santa Barbara, Calif., native, was an All-County andfirst-team All-League selection while play-ing at San Marcos High School. She also earnedsecond team All-GIF honors as she averaged eight killsper game.

NikkiTaylor, a 5-8 setter from Rockford, Ohio, willplay an important role at her position this fall. Taylorled her senior Parkway High School squad to theSectional, District and Regional Championships. Shewas a first-team All-Conference and District Eight Ail-Star Division I, II, and III selection. She also earnedsecond team All-Ohio Division III honors.

"All of our newcomers come from excellent volley-ball backgrounds. They have all played Junior Olym-pic volleyball this summer which will help preparethem for the upcoming season here at MSU," saidLucas-White.

Memphis State will play numerous home matchesincluding three tournaments (Tiger Invitational, Sept.3-4, Graphic Systems Classic, Sept. 10-11 and theNike Invitational, Oct. 1-2).

The Lady Tigers will also face such top rankedteams as Florida, South Florida, George Washingtonand Arkansas State. The schedule also includes homeand away matches with each conference team as wellas Ole Miss.

1992 Lady Tiger Review

1992 Lady Tiger Review

Lady Tiger head coach Penny Lucas-Whiteregroups her team during a timeout.

Hope "Springs" eternal, at least for the 1992-93Memphis State Lady Tigers. Despite a disappointing1992 season, the Memphis State Lady Tigers had a veryoptimistic 1993 USVBA spring season, which headcoach Penny Lucas-White hopes will continue in thefall of'93.

MSU opened the 1992 season with a third placefinish at the University of Alabama Crimson TideClassic. At that tournament, junior Amy Greer andsophomore Renee Ross earned all-tournament teamhonors. The Lady Tigers lone win was at the expense ofthe host team, Alabama, 14-16, 15-11, 7-15, 15-13,17-15.

On Sept. 11-12, 1992, the Lady Tigers returnedhome for their only home tournament of the season, the Graphic Systems Classic. MSU won its first roundmatch over Southeast Missouri State, 15-13,9-15,15-7, 15-2. However, in the championship match, theLady Tigers faced fiesty Arkansas-Little Rock and fellhard, 7-15, 9-15, 14-16.

The '92 season was long, not only in the number ofmatches, but in the number of miles the Lady Tigerstraveled. Head coach Penny Lucas-White could manageto schedule only seven home matches and the GraphicSystems Classic.

After that first home tournament, the Lady Tigerstraveled to Texas where they won two of three matches. The North Texas match was a 3-1 victory, while theybeat Southwestern Louisiana 3-0. The team's lone losswas to a tough University of Texas-Arlington squad, infive games.

Three times during the 1992 season MemphisState played Arkansas State, and three times the LadyTigers lost to the top rated Lady Indians.

From Texas, Memphis State headed north toSyracuse, NY to participate in the University of SyracuseInvitational. The Lady Tigers could just not warm-up,as they finished fourth, losing to both Bowling GreenState and Syracuse, 0-3.

The Great Midwest regular season began on Oct. 2,

at home against the University of Cincinnati. For thefirst time, all six GMW schools would play a home andaway schedule. The Lady Tigers got off to a good startwith a 17-15,16-14, 15-8 win over the Lady Bearcats.

From the cold north of New York, Memphis Statetraveled to the warmth of Louisiana to participate inthe Northeast Louisiana Classic In Monroe, La. A lonewin over the host squad found the Lady Tigers takingthird place honors for the second time In '92.

After that tournament, MSU faced five straightconference opponents, Including defending GreatMidwest champion Alabama at Birmingham. The LadyTigers could manage only one win in those five matches,a 15-7, 15-8, 15-9 win over Marquette.

It was off to yet another tournament, the KathyTrosclair Invitational, hosted by Tulane University.Once .again MSU finished third winning two of fourmatches (UT-Chattanooga, 3-1 and Samford, 3-1).Junior Sami Randolph and sophomore Jamie Runkleearned all-tournament honors.

The win over Samford, Oct. 25, was the LadyTigers'last victory of the regular season. Memphis Stateclosed out the regular season with 11 straight losses.

While at the William & Mary Tournament, the LadyTigers won two games in four matches.

Memphis State completed the regular Great MidwestConference season with a disappointing loss toMarquette, 9-15,4-15,8-15. Itwas the first time aMSUsquad had lost to Marquette.

At the Great Midwest Championships In Chicago,111., Memphis State, 2-8 in conference action, would beseeded sixth. Lucas-White's troop faced Marquette infirst round action. The team's regular season loss lefta bad taste in its mouth and the Lady Tigers wantedrevenge.

In a hard fought battle, the LadyTigers came out awinner, 20-18, 7-15, 15-9, 15-11. Ross led the squadwith a career-high 25 kills in the victory.

Defending champion UAB was the LadyTigers nextopponent. The Lady Blazers, a very senior orientedsquad, were flustered by Memphis State, but came outvictorious, 15-6, 12-15, 15-8, 15-6.

It had been a long season for the Lady Tigers, finishing with a 10-26 record. For MSU, it was the firstlosing season since 1985 (15-19) and the most lossesa Lady Tiger team had ever Incurred.

Despite a bitter fall season, that youthful (noseniors) Lady Tiger team regrouped in the spring, andwon numerous tournaments. The fall of '93 would bethe year Memphis State would, "Storm Back To TheTop."

THE GREAT MIDWESTThings like this are supposed to take time. But it

didn't take much time for the Great Midwest Confer-ence to make an impact on the national scene. In itsfirst two seasons, the Great Midwest has met orexceeded all expectations for the nation's newestNCAA, Division I conference.

Entering its third season, the conference looks tobuild on a strong foundation as it welcomes a seventhmember, the University of Dayton, into league compe-tition. The Great Midwest will also continue a traditionof postseason play with the addition of automatic bidsto the conference champion in men's soccer, women'svolleyball and women's basketball.

Great Midwest teams have met with postseasonsuccess even without automatic qualifications. Dur-ing the first year of competition, the Saint Louis men'ssoccer team and the Cincinnati men's basketball teammade appearances in the national semifinals. Theywere among the eight teams and two individualsrepresenting the Great Midwest in postseason tourna-ments in 1991-92. Last season, eight teams and fourindividuals competed in postseason action, includinga return trip to the Elite Eight for the Cincinnati men'sbasketball team. Seven teams also made appearancesin the national rankings of their respective sports.

"Our first two years have been tremendous," Com-missioner Mike Slive said. "I am pleased the NCAA hasrecognized the level of competition in the Great Mid-west by granting us the automatic qualifications. Theconference is committed to offering competitive oppor-tunities in all our championship sports. Our auto-matic qualifications further enhance this commit-ment."

The conference sponsors championships in 16sports - volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, indoortrack and field, outdoor track and field, cross countryfor women along with soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, rifle, indoor track and field, outdoor trackand field and cross country for the men.

"This is more than a men's basketball conference,"Slive said. "I'm very proud of the fact that we have beenrepresented in postseason play in soccer, women'sbasketball, volleyball and men's tennis, as well asmen's basketball."

There has also been plenty of academic success.Nine conference athletes have earned GTE AcademicAil-American honors and several others have beenhonored on the district level. The Great Midwest iscommitted to academic success for its student ath-letes and maintains stringent guidelines regardinginitial and continuing eligibility.

Great Midwest institutions are more than athleticrivals. The league is developing an academic consor-tium Involving students, faculty, fellowships and re-search. The consortium includes a visiting lecture

series coinciding with athletic contests. The Great Midwest was formed in November, 1990,

with six charter members: Alabama at Birmingham,Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Memphis State andSaint Louis.

Slive, formerly a Chicago-based attorney specializ-ing in sports law, became commissioner in February,1991.

The conference includes Tim Stephens, AssistantCommissioner for Media Relations; Brenda Weare,Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Champi-onships; Sandra Biller, Assistant to the Commissionerfor Administration; Erika Amstadt, Director of Com-munications; Bruce Mahon, Director of Finance andInformation Systems; Linda Jepsen and Betty Driskell,Secretaries. Dave Phillips is the supervisor of men'sbasketball officials and Ray Piagentini is the supervisorof women's basketball officials.

Athletic Academics

The Athletic Academic Center

In 1987, Dr. Timothy Sumner who had been hiredIn 1986 to become the director of Athletic AcademicServices began planning for the construction of anathletic academic center.

Memphis State's new $90,000 Athletic AcademicServices Center was opened in January of 1990. The4,000-square-foot center serves about 260 athletes, trainers and managers on 16 Tiger athletic teams andis located in the MSU Field House.

The facility contains: three tutor rooms, each eight-person capacity; two computer labs, outfitted witheight Zenith PCs and six Maclntoshs; three types ofstudy area seating; 16 individually lighted studycarrels;three counselor offices; check-in area; kitchenareafor staff and evening workers; director's suite withconference area, reception secretary area andassistant's offices.

The Center for Athletic Academic Sevices is com-mitted to assisting student-athletes in earning a collegedegree. The Center provides an atmosphere of per-sonal attention and encouragement as well as tutorialassistance and academic support.

The Center's services include advice in all aspectsof the student's academic life - registration; studyskills; degree planning; information regardingUniversity programs and policies and procedures. TheCenter also offers advice and sponsors programs and

workshops to enhance the personal development of thestudent athlete. Information regarding NCAA rules andregulations are made available to the student athleteby the Center. Additionally, the Center monitors thestudent-athlete's progress toward his/her degreeobjective.

The Academic Counselors are: Susan Irwin who isincharge ot monitoring, evaluating and counseling thebaseball, men's golf and all Lady Tiger sports; RichardJones is responsible for the soccer, men's track andtennis teams as well as all managers and trainers. The development of this unique and dynamic ap-proach to assistance for student athletes has resultedin a steadily increasing academic performance, a dra-matic rise in graduation rates, and a significant de-crease in the time needed for the average studentathlete to graduate.

Over the past five years, the rapidly developing"Tiger" Athletic Academic Program has been recog-nized by many facets of the national media including:USAToday, The Chronicle of Higher Education, SportsIllustrated, and ABC World News Tonight with PeterJennings.
