It was mid-September, and one of those days tliatmake you forget you're undertrained and you resubmitfor consideration the marathon you gave up on in Julywhen middle-age-onset hay fever has your nostrils in afull nelson and you went off to the reservoir for a scenicrun and proceeded to scare off all the scenic wildlife for aradius of 20 miles with one of your extended sneezecombinations, and you would've seen nothing but a bluranyway because your eyes were watering so badly thatfive separate cars pulled over, all of them driven bysomewhat attractive fortyish women thinking you'd justbroken up with your latest and did you want to talkabout it.

Anyway, Dan and Steve and I were supposed to meetat seven, I arrived at seven, since the Gladiator is astickler for punctuality; Steve shortly thereafter, since hehas a different conception of time, and Dan... We waitedtill 7:15, considering it bad form to run off without thedesignated Gunga Din, but the aforementioned dudeshad afternoon golf plans, which the (jladiator does notplay and thinks is tiresome, so we decided to go."Shouldn't we put out a bottle first?" I inquired of mycompanion, "No time," he growled, I went along withthat, since I'd seen an earlier group on the course andI'm a good scavenger. Steve may be finicky about otherpeople's supplies, but I've been known to sneak in andout of strange folks' driveways without them everknowing that their garden hovses have been violated. Weapproached mile three of sixteen with our tongues out inexpectation. Usually find something here. One old plasticjug with an inch or two of water in it and definitely noexpiration date visible. "No way I'm drinking that; YOUget amoebic dysentery," Steve said charitably. I took afew sips, unenthusiastic about the vintage. Out of theHunterbrook loop, eyes darting left and right. Usuallyfind something here. "Well, that's a drag," we said, tongues like dried leather. We ran on, my pace slowingfrom disappointment, "Do you think we should cut itshort? I asked, out of consideration, of course. I wasn'tgoing to bail out for a trivial thing like dehydration, "I'mnot hurting yet," Steve said. We ran on. Nine miles, tons of water rushing over the dam. Nor any drop todrink."This is getting grim," I said. "I sure don't wannahear you whining when we get to stairway," Steve said,"You won't," I said, "Dead runners don't whine."

At Stairway, Steve accelerated. It's not that he was lessbothered by the Spartan conditions than I was, althoughby now my tongue felt like one of those sponges lliatcomes flat in the package, until you put il inyou-know-what. No, he's just a little faster, that's all.Well, never mind that, I plod across the bridge, .slake mythirst from the vast supplies we'd left in the car, and wesit around considering various substances and theirrelative merits at mile 20 in the marathon. We furtherbreak th is down in to var ious substances that wc canintroduce into Iran's water bott les at Dutchess without

being detected. Sauerkraut, chili powder, and cat hair, stirred - not shaken. And who should come driving alongwhile we were perfecting our term paper from Hell, butDan, "C'mon, get out," Steve shoves mc, trying to foolDan into thinking we haven't run yet. "You ran already, huh?" Dan says dispiritedly. "We were a little thirsty," Isay, "I didn't get to bed till five." A little sheepish, "Bah,"I say, and desire to murder slowly fading as I look atDan's face and the place where his eyes used to be.

Well, maybe we'll just leave out the cat hair.

This year's Columbus Day race for children was ahuge success, with 452 of the little guys running the 1/4mile at Peekskill's Depcw Park old cinder track. Theevent is limited to kids in grades 1-6, so first grade boysran against first grade boys, first grade girls ran againsttheir peers, and so on through 34 heats. Lach heatcounted as a separate race for awards and team scoring.Ben Franklin elementaiy school won over all followedby Van Cortlandt in second and Thomas .lefTerson inthird. George Washington, Woodside and l .incoln Tituswere all within two points of Thomas .lefferson.

The $2 entry fee (second sibling ran free) raised $714fo r the Mat thew Moore fund and the Pceksk i l lAmbulance Corps. Matthew Moore is a former physicaleducation instructor and wrestling coach in Peek.skill, and he always helped out with this event, before beingseriously injured in a rugby accident. As a pleasantsurprise he was able to attend the race this year.

The awards were financed by the Peekskill/Cortlandtrunning fund, They use the proceeds from the .Ian PeeklOK race to support running programs in the local area,First place in each heat took home a small trophy.Second through the first third of the finishers wonmedals and everyone received a ribbon.

This race is sponsored by the Peckskill ParksDepartment, the Peckskill Busybodics 4-II Club and theTaconic Road Runners Club. The Peckski l l AmbulanceCorps was there taking care any scrapes and bruises,Peckskill Pohce Officers assisted with the parking and thePeckskill High School Parents Club manned theconcession stand. Special thanks to the elementaryschool physical education teachers who rallied the troopsand got the kids there in force, .lack Burns has alwaysbeen the emcee, directing the children onto the track, making the announcements, and presenting the winners.Controlling 452 youngsters without his help this yearwas not my idea of a good time. Hopefully .lack'srecovery will be swift and will sec him running agains o o n .

1Twas the night before marathon, their bags were all packed, their sneakers were readied, for the long distance track.their homes were all quiet, the TV so low, that we had to speak softly, or to sneak in a show. The children were warned not to stir or to creep, and not to invade their fathers' night sleep.

2Tis the morning of wake-up 5 AM.Is the time, when I thought that I heardthat familiar door chime.I .squirmed not to answer, please go away, when I heard their loud voices, - yo it's marathon day.

3He's a thin sort of person, built like a dart, and I knew in a moment, it had to be Art.He sat on our step, shaking his head, and confes.sed to us all, he had plenty to dread. He was dres.sed like a bagman, nothing did match, except for his recboks, and a quartz running watch.

4I went to the window and raised up the blind, for a short moment, I thought they left me behind.I opened the front door said 'wait for me,'I'll drive you to Dan's shop, and freeze, naturally. The dew on the window of my freshly washed van,had caused me to wonder why I married this man.I looked at him soundly, praying, I thought,ah, to take this crazed person back, from where he was bought. But no not a chance, unfortunate you sec,a potbellied husband is the husband for me.

5I watched as the bus slowly drove them away,in the gazebo I sat, for this is the day.As I turned to wave my final good-byewith fears and anxiety, I started to cry. With me in my P..I.'s had no time to dress,I said to myself, there go the best.

6Twas early at .lack's house, when who should appear, but Mr. Cab Driver, dressed in full jogging gear. He'd a lively quick step, and a merry gay whistle, and I knew in a moment, his mustache mUvSt tickle. My feet how they tingled, my nose how it shined,my hands were like ice cubes, my thoughts were unkind. We packed up the auto, as he turned with a smile, and I fell asleep soundly for over a mile. When rny eyes they did open, in the Met parking lot,I came to remember our reserved parking spot.

7Wc stood and vvc waited for the great caravan,of many brave runners who had thought of this plan.We stretched out our muscles, and looked in great awe,at all of these people who had come here so far.T he buildings were dressed in all finery, with marathon posters and first names you sec.We unpacked our baggage, hot tea and dry clothes. We walked, taking partners, two in a row.

8The streets were so crowded, the people in groups, the command was then given, follow mc troops. The gatorade jug was filled to the lop,

and across each avenue, we'd walk till I dropped.9

We stood in the middle of I'irst Avenue, between 79th and ROth cause that is the clue, for our marathon runners who must do their part,to stop and drink tea, and check out their heart.

10The crowds how they cheered, with waves of emotion, holy be heaven, what a commotion. We waited and waited, our check time approved, the approximate time for the first runners move. When suddenly, there rose such a clatter,I wished I had brought my Stanley stepladdcr.

11He was dressed in full fashion, marathon tee shirt as well, with a smile on his face, it was I'rank I could tell. He'd no time to drink a cup of hot tea,he had to keep his pace, had to finish you see.Ah, but I heard him exclaimere he jogged out of sight,a hot plate of pasta for him tonight .

12

A few minutes later the excitement died down, and wc laughed, and we talked and wc fooled around. With each runner passing we began to applaud,Achilles track team, how courageous I thought.

13

Our team came and passed us, each one looking fine,It's the I7(h mile mark, just read the sign. When each man had passed us, we up and packed gear,at Central Park West, the ending is near.

1

The families and runners measure 25000 by score, and I say to myself, there just can't be more. The balloons were all lettered in alphabet row,the Peckskill balloon had somehow let go.We searched in confusion, looking around, for one Peekskill runner, .soon to be found.

2The sun had chosen to hide for awhile, behind .stalking grey clouds, just not my style. After each man slowly came in,with heartfelt emotion, a .smile or a grin, the man that I married had not shown his face, and I wanted to leave this god-awful place. My nerves in a bundle, my stomach so tight,I vowed to myself, he would be all right.

3

So we sat and waited, and we waited some more, and I couldn't help but wonderjust what was in store. When out of the crowd I spotted a man,and I knew in a moment it had to be him.We walked kinda crooked, he looked somehow distort, and just for a moment I knew his first thought. We spoke not a word, gathered the crew,I held him up slightly, what more could I do?We walked to the Met, all quiet and calm, each with our partners, arm and arm.

G O I N G I I O M f ' .

1The Met parking lot has an air of its own.It isn't exactly like being at home. The finishers sit upon the ground.not quite aware of the crowd of the sounds. They sip their tea and soda, are in a state of bliss, they've finished this long marathon, yes, they have finished this.

2While placing his finger on the side of his nose, standing quite smartly in his marathon clothes,he rounds up his teammates, by calling their names, now Robert, now .leiry, Stuart and Art.,I^ad up your autos it's time to depart.

3We pack up our baggage this very last time,it's the end of this marathon,it's the end of this rhyme

Kevin Wynne won the third annual Great Hospital 5K in the record time of 15:16, beating second placeGlen Magrum by 16 seconds. Dave Mitzi was 8 seconds back in third. Kathleen Ford became the first repeatwinner with a time of 19:35, falling short of second place Sarah Stahr's record time in 1990. Brenda Horan wasin third place for the second consecutive year also! And Karen Johnson repeated as winner of the 19-29 ageg r o u p .Other things were different. This was the smallest turnout of the three years. Last year's helpful travelagency was less helpful this year and no American Airlines ticket could be raffled ofT, going the way of the AerLingus ticket at the St. Patrick's Day races. The lure of first place prizes (Polar Heart Rate Monitors) wasenough to bring some of the area's fastest runners to the race. And the hospital changed it's name since last yearand you know what kind of effect that can have on a race.

David Ryan took the 19-29 male win and Scott Abercombie was the masters winner. Charlie Creel beatDoug Miller in the 30-39 group as both tried to race fast enough to beat Bob Hermesch for the overall GrandPrix victory. Couldn't do it. Wanda Keating was the women's 30-39 winner and Inga-Lill Wik took the masterv i c t o r y . . .

A new twist with this race was the uneven distribution of age awards as described in the last newsletter. Therace results printing here do not reflect the awards that were distributed. Among the beneficiaries were MattFisher and Mike Gossett, fourth and fifth in 30-39 male, Sarah Collins, fourth in 30-39 female and MarkLescault and Tom Amisson, fourht and fifth in 40-59 male.

Next year's race will be held at the Upper West Westchester Hospital Center Serving The Hudson ValleyAnd Perhaps Peekskill/Cortlandt (same adiess).

LOEHFELN SUCCEEDS HERMESCH AS CLUB GOLF CHAMPIONCAFFREY - PAT, THAT IS - OUTDRIVES MEN TO REPEAT

The second annual golf championship almost went according to plan -someone (name to remain anonymous) failed to show for tee-off time -but Fred LOEHFELM remained unruffled and scraped to a one shot victoryover Jim Mc Dermott in claiming club honors for 1992.

Fred's 42 on Pawling's Dutcher Golf course, enabled him to takeover bragging honors from Bob Hermesch, who was stuck — of allthings - running in a masters' relay and unable to defend. A matter ofp r i o r i t i e s , o n e s u p p o s e s . ^

Sandy Mac Tavish and lansman Kenny Muir teamed for the doublestitle, while Steve MacKay was winner of low handicap. (It is assumedall these gentlemen conducted themselves in the same honest manner asthey do when they are running????) One whose honesty was not inq u e s t i o n w a s P a t C a f f r e y.
