Large, wet flakes began to fall about thirty min utes before race, time, making the footing somewhat tricky. In fact, running up the north-end (202) hill seemed a lot like running up a "down" escalator. Undaunted, 374 runners participated in tlie two-mile fun run or the lOK race. There were some fine performances. Mike Stahr's 31:48 sec a new record on the challenging FDR course. Steve Calidonna and Paul Fendler dueled for second place, with Calidonna ending up in f r o n t b y t l i r c e s e c o n d s . In the age groups, John Dugdale came tlirougii with a sterling performance, to take the 50-59's in 37:33 (amazing!). Former TRRC prez Dan Caffrey also ran a fine race. His 38:51 was good for second place. Tony Galfano topped the 40-49 group with a speedy 36:05. Joe Porcaro, a new arrival to the masters' division, took second place. Justin Figgins, eighth overall, e a s i l y w o n t h e 1 5 - 1 8 d i v i s i o n i n 3 5 : 3 8 . In the feisty 60's, Pierce Brennan ran a 44:44 to claim the gold. Fourth and fifth place women topped their divisions as Debbie Beatrice (44:23) won the 30-39's and Linda Geppert (45:13) took the 40-49's. Sixth woman, Robin Maloney, was second in the 30-39 group. Sue MacEacherii won the 19-29 division in 46:50. The 50's were ably represented by Robin Purcell (53:00), Anna Korpf and Bea Matzkin. TACONIC RUNNERS SCOTLAND BOUND.

laconic runners are about to embark on yet another new venture. Laterthis year two groups will represent our club: one in Scotland, the other ata site to be determined. Plans call for the club's elite runners to participate in Scotland's Edinburgh to Glasgow road relay in November, and aspecial trip is scheduled to send a women's team carrying our green andwhi te in a race o f the i r choos ing .

First nine runners across the line at Lincoln Hall will comprise thetransatlantic team, while the first three ladies at Debbie Schramm - plus afourth to be named later - will be the makeup for the second trip. There isa matter of eligibility, though. Naturally, you have to be a member, andto be fair to the faithful, that membership must be in good standing as ofA p r i l 1 2 , t h i s y e a r . If you're asking, "If it's the Boston Alternative, why isn't it a marathon?"I've wondered that myself, but I only report on the races, I don't plan andname them. Distances notwi thstanding, the TRRC spir i t remained undampenedby the light drizzle which fell on and off during the race. Approximatelytwenty-five ran the two-mile fun run and sixty-three competed in the lOK.Comple te resu l ts a re in th is i ssue.

Tom Church, John Hallinan, and Dennis Barham ran a fine race, placingfi r s t , s e c o n d a n d t h i r d o v e r a l l . T h e y c a m e t h r o u g h t h e fi n i s h l i n ein the same order and at the same distance apart they had come throughthe first loop (like watching a video replay). Among the women, RachelFreidman, Wanda Keating and Audrey Capiel lo topped the field.

There was a lively crew at the finish line, trying to keep warm and drywith the help of Tony's Galfano's huge umbrella. Brian Wheaton suppliedthe refreshments, and the awards ceremony was livened up by the "wit andwisdom" of Harry Neeson. Linda Geppert and Pierce Brennan were seentraining well into the rainy afternoon, I presume getting ready forT r e v i r a .

We haven't been lucky weatherwise - snow on St. Patrick's Day, rain andcold today. Maybe real spr ing weather wi l l be around for the Peekski l lMi le or Mother 's Day. (We can a lways hope! )

If you have never run a marathon, you may find it helpful to see how long youcan s tand w i thou t s i t t i ng down. Start by taking in the commercials, move up to a five-minute news slot, then an entire segment of a show with no commerical interruptions. (Youshould be so lucky!) When you can take in a whole half-hour show, you cangraduate to longer shows, and when you can remain standing through one ofthose exc i t i ng baseba l l games , you ' l l be in a pos i t i on to t r y runn ing .

One foot shou ld a lways go in f ront o f the o ther. Don ' t a t tempt to gobackwards, since this tends to confuse beginners on which way they haveto go when d i rected to make a r ight turn. When you take your first t raining run, ignore the laughs of those kids andneighbors on your b lock (who needs the l i t t le bastards anyway?) . Try torun through as many puddles as you can find.
