REGARDING OUR CLASS

Need to brush-up on your Teacup Chain?Stop by the Basic Class on Monday nights for aquick refresher on this and other Plus andMainstream calls. This is a Basic Class likenone you have ever seen. A new experimentalteaching protocol mixes Basic, Mainstream andPlus calls in an approximately 40 week programto br ing new dancers up to Club level as quicklyas possible.

How is it working? Great. The class isprogressing very rapidly, according to teacherBob Bellville. The class, which began inSeptember, is very small, about l5 students. Thesmall size coupled with a great turnout of angels(about one angel for each class member) hasaccelerated the learning process.

What do the class members think about theexperience. "I love it," was the unqualifiedresponse from at least one. Jesse works at theYMCA and had observed our classes in the past.'I took four years of square dancing in highschool, so I thought it would be easy, but thecalls are very different. By the way, this group really does do aflawless Teacup Chain, and they would be happyto have Club members stop by for a quickreview.

$r 368.Balance on hand as of December I , 1987

As your new Treasurer, I am happy toreport a fair cash balance on hand. We are inan acceptable financial position. To report amore complete picture, however, our Club'sbalance has teetered a few times in the recentpast. Twice this year, it was necessary toborrow money from club members to meetexpenses.

I have heard Club members blame CampSwig for the current financial dilemma. It istrue that the retreat resulted in a loss to theClub of $1850. But the attendance at Camp Swigreflects the attendance at other club events. andis an indication of our problem. Our problem isattendance. On some Club nights we lose money. On some Club nights we break even due only to50/50, soda sales, or bake sales. At somedances, we lose money.

While we have over 130 members on theClub roster, on most Club nights we havebetween l7 and 25 dancers. At Plus Night onDecember 4th, there were 28 present. . . Come anddance.

I am beginning to hear comments on thenumber of fundraisers at Western Star. Thetruth is that our Club's financial well-being ispresently a result of fundraisers. Theseactivities are keeping us alive, folks. Great asthe show was, even Club LaStar, with a wonder-ful profit of $690, was a fundraiser. Happily, our garage sale fundraiser generated $600.

I have heard members say that they didn'tlike the callers that were scheduled and were, therefore, staying away. Some big-name callersare scheduled for the future ... come dance.

For the New Year, let's get Western StarDancers financially strong. Pay your dues early.Support the fundraisers. Most of all ... COME DANCE.

A FRACTION OF THE NOTWORTHY

Bob Bel lv i l le said i t , " . . .dancing to recordsprovides the opportunity to dance to some of thebest callers in the country". On Dec. 2nd, wedid that. After Bob figured out which callerscould be clear ly understood over our soundsystem, the qual i ty of the experience improveddramatical ly. I look forward to doing i t again.

Plus night with Vicki Woods in earlyDecember was a hoot! Vicki kept the floorgoing and cal led and sang for a fare-thee-wel l .

Russel l King is back into product iou. Readhis bit later in this newsletter.

Attached to this newsletter is the 1988membership renewal form. The revised formincludes some questions which seek a greaterlevel of participation. You will notice theincrease in fee to $2 l, I suspect, as you writethe check (hope you will). The membership atthe December meeting authorized the change.

As of January lst , Western Star Dancersofficially raises the floor level to Plus for ClubNight. As mentioned last issue, review t ips (oneeach Club Night) are planned, and on January23rd (Saturday) an afternoon of review isavailable - catch you when you're rested.

The garage sale - results? See Denise'swords in this issue. The results wereastounding!

For those of you gad-abouts who frequentSeattle, there's a new Country/Western barcalled Timberline at 2015 Boren Ave. (622-6120).The floor is big enough for 12 squares, theceilings are 40' high, and there are 2 balconies.

The Denver FLY-IN is set for Feb. 26-28.Check the f lyer (no pun intended) at Club Night.

I started writing a piece on my view of thenewsletter and how I put one together. As Iwrote, the column got less and less clear anduseful , . . . Down to a nutshel l : my approach isto put together a product which reflects theambience of the g,roup, which carries the newsyou need to know on a timely basis, and whichrepresents Western Star Dancers in a positivefashion.

CASTING CALL by Russ King

I'm planning a revival of an exhibitionpiece performed by Western Star at the 1983Reno Rodeo/Country Dance Festival. It 'sdesigned for two squares, and is performed tomusic by Scott Joplin. Ron Douglass willrecreate his role as cuer, and most of theoriginal cast who are stil l dancing will return. However, we're going to need about a square ofdancers to replace those who have left us.

If you might be interested, please give mea cal l (home 863-0990; work 989-1300 ext 232).You should be comfortable with Plus level and bewilling to put in roughly 12 to 15 hoursrehearsal time. No previous exhibitionexperience is necessary, and the styling will t"very low-key. The performance is schedulecour 6th Anniversary Dance in March.Gail

THAT OTHER BAY AREA

I was mildly disappointed when I sawthe Lambda Squares calendar forThanksgiving Week. It was blank, andthat was the week I would be visiting DC.My disappointment was largely dispelledwhen my DC buddy Paul escorted me to a'going-away" party for Jim and Dave, whowill soon grace the Square Dance scene inSeattle. The revelers were an irresistiblemixture of new and experienced (Lambda)square dancers plus a contingent fromChesapeake Squares. Aside from thefriendliness of those I met, the dominantimpression was of enthusiasm and fun.

As it turned out more good fortunewas just across the Bay (Chesapeake, thatis). Tom and his buddy Warren, twoLambda dancers, offered Paul and me aride to Baltimore for Chesapeake SquaresBasic/Mainstream dance Tuesday evening. And what a workout it turned out to be,featuring Doug, one of the regular callers, and again an explosive mixture of DC andChesapeake squares - this time with aBaltimore accent. I proudly danced everytip in full Western Star drag. Ett McAtee(President, Chesapeake Squares) and Russ, two of the most enthusiastic dancers, evenarranged a final Plus tip.

Lambda and Chesapeake fuuares seemto have a wonderfully symbioticrelationship. I can't wait to square upwith them in Phoenix.

WESTERN STAR DANCERS VISIT THE SF EAGLE

The black and silver banners of WesternStar Dancers were prominently displayed Sunday,December l3th, at the city's famous bar, the SanFrancisco Eagle, setting of Western Star's firstbeer bust. Organizer James Ozanich, assisted bymember Ron Hirsch, presided at the door. From3 to 6 pm, $6 bought a "bottomless" beer cup,A goodly crowd of square dancers, leather andLevi men. friends and lovers were in attendance. The event rnade roughly $150. Good news forour treasury.

Ken Kalstein and Ed Conley served aswaiters ministering to the thirsty throng, pouringand replenishing the 'suds' from large pitchers ofbeer, fetched from the Eagle's back patio bar.

Royalty and nobility also participated.Entertainment, emceed by James Ozanich, wasprovided by member Gaby Archambaut, the RoyalCrown Princess of the Grand Ducal Court of SanFrancisco. Gaby offered delightfulinterpretations of two Shirley Bassey numbers'Let Me Sing a Happy Song,n followed by theevocative "Nobody Does It Like Me."

Member Suzy Wong, Minister of the Robesof the Grand Ducal Court of the Golden Eagleand Eternal Flame, followed with a wonderfulsoft rock rendering of Kim Wil le 's 'You Keep MeHanging On.' Suzy was appropriately attired ina black leather skirt and black sweater.

Last to appear was Club La Star's producerand director summa cum laude Jim Head. Jimastonished the beer drinkers with his amusingtwo hat number "I Remember It Well" featuringMaurice Chevalier and Herminone Gingold.

Our thanks to square dancer, 'Count' SteveSanders, Minister of Show Business of the GrandDucal Court, who deftly handled the business ofcassette tape handling, volume and microphonecontrol on the Eagle's daunting stereo system.

Compliments are due to Tom Tripp whohandled the demanding job of feeding a horde ofleather men and square dancers. His de-liciouslasagna, salad, and garlic bread proved verypopular and disappeared with dismaying speed.

Thanks also to Eagle maDager TerryThompson and the back bar bartenders for theirassistance in Western Star's first nbeer bust."#"""*"

On the road again:

October found me on a plane en route toexperience for the first time The Wilde BunchAnnual Balloon Fiesta Fly-In. It was anotherfirst for me, as it was the first major squaredance gathering that Steffany did not attend. Iswear that it 's less tiring to go in drag evenwhen you're exhausted than it is to explain whyyou're wearing pants. But they got over i t .

My hosts were Bi l l Eyler and Jim Bai ley.Now Bill and I are from Louisiana; however, wegraduated from arch-rival universities. Thatweekend was the annual football contest, so onthe way to the car from the airport, I said,"Wreck Tech!" The weekend started with rousingsuccess, and Northeast did wreck Tech Saturday.

I had arrived early in the afternoon, so Ihad t ime to vis i t with Bi l l , gett ing to know himbetter. He even took me to a used record store- my passion - and let me look through all thecast albums - the reason for my passion. OnSaturday afternoon when Bill was busy, Jim andI got a chance to sit lazily on the front porchin the warm sunshine and chat. Then he tookme to another used record store. (Oh joy! Ohbliss!) I've noticed that I dance less and less atthese gatherings. I spend more t ime hugging andkissing and talking.

Friday night was a big gathering at theAlbuquerque Social Club. What was supposed tobe munchies was actually a meal, and thecocktails were big and cheap. I had a few withmy friends from Denver - about 20 in all. No,not cocktails. One person from Phoenix, 3 fromthe LA area, Wayne Paul from Miami, Sam fromAtlanta, and Doug from Foggy City were there.

On Saturday morning, we were up at 4 amto go to the mass ascension of the hot airballoons. It was stil l dark when we arrived, andI couldn't see any balloons. I expected them tobe blown up and nparked" around the periphery.I couldn't see even a vague shadow, so I keptcommentiDg that I wanted to go to where theballoons were. They said we were. All I couldsee was this long row of vendors selling allkinds of food and souvenirs - like a carnival.

Mind you, there are thousands of peoplemilling about in this large open field. Squaredancers start showing up like someone washawking plus tips. It's starting to lighten, and Ican see trucks all over the place with funny-

looking metal things in the back. Then we stalooking for Joe's balloon. (Joe from Denver l^won the balloon ride raffle.) Now I get it!Those are balloon baskets are in the backs ofthose trucks, and we had been in the middle ofthem all along.

At about 7 am, a hustle of activity beginswith about 500 balloons being prepared. Eachballoon is taken from its bag, stretched out onthe ground, and attached to the basket.Someone holds a rope at the top of the balloonwhile others hold open the bottom, and bigelectric fans start fi l l ing the fabric with air. When the balloon is a flabby, oblong shape, thegas jets are lighted and start heating the air.The balloon begins to gracefully lift upright andpeople hold the basket on the ground awaitingclearance for lift off.

It is an awesome experience to be engulfedby these huge balloons so close together thatthey touch. One by one, they quietly ascendwith only the rhythmic sound of gas beingreleased to keep the air heated. Watching Joelift off was quite like watching Dorothyreturning to Kansas. The color and grandeurcannot be adequately described. Go next yearand experience it first hand!

Saturday night was the dinner/dance at theClarion Hotel. Many tips were danced to a localcaller from Basic through Advanced. When thedance was over, we reconvened at the SocialClub for CW dancing and more of those largecocktails.

Did you know that Albuquerque is as highabove sea level as Denver? Well, it is. OnSunday morning, a g,roup went to Sandia Peakfor lunch. It's one of those places you get toon a tram suspended on a cable, going upanother 5000 feet above sea level. I held mybreath to cut down on the sway and weight ofthe car. Everyone who wanted got a chance todance a tip at the top. We came down fordancing in the afternoon at the ASC.

Then it was time to go to the airport. Imade a flying round around the room for kissesand hugs. I always have a period of remorsebecause I leave behind people I have come toknow and love and who care about me.

EXECUTIVE BOARD - FEBRUARY

"In regard to disputes which have e dlrecteffect on Club activlties, a Club member mayrequest that a Board member investigate andsuggest a logical course of action. Majordisputes may require consideration by thefull Board."

After discussion in several meetings, theBoard agreed on the text above as WesternStar Dancers Policy Statement +*12. Thesense was that while some problems mightrequire official intervention, Board memberswould prefer as much flexibility as possiblerather than a rigid structure for dealingwith such difficulties.

The Treasurer reported that 72 membershiprenewals had swelled the club profits to$1076 for the month of January. Profitsfrom dances amounted to approximately $

March will be the lrst lssue of thenewsletter for those who have not renewedtheir membership!!!

Social committee reports began with travelrrrsngements to Phoenix for The Convention.John Smith of Navigator Travel, t64-0401,will make a donation to Western Star foreach reservation if we mention the clubname. Air tickets would begin at about $l l0per person, round trip.

For newdancers in our Mainstream class, the fee willbe $5, half the price for half the dancing, since we want them to come and have fun.

In other anniversary dance news, a postdance brunch has been scheduled forYosemite Sam's at 6th and Folsom onSunday. In addition, we are stil l looking ^items to raffle during the dance.

DANCE WIDOWS

So NUMBER ONE has left you all aloneagain while it 's play time for him/her, andyou g,et stuck at home. Well let's face it,you have things you can do that never getdone when NUMBER ONE is around onWednesday. I mean do they ever do thelaundry, dishes, vacuum - well you knowwhat I mean. So you really don't mindNUMBER ONE doing his/her thing.Sometimes being a couch potato is verysatisfying, especially when you are the oneon the couch.

But! Does NUMBER ONE have to leave youalone on the weekends when the specialdances are being held? NO MORE!!! Yourtime has arrived! Western Star Dancers isasking for your help at our soft drink barwhen we have our weekend dances. Here isa chance for you to make some new friendsand keep an eye on you know who. Now weall know that YOU are not the jealous typeand you can let you NUMBER ONE havetheir fun with the old'Red Rock" with thatTRAMP that asked THEM to dance, but youwill want to keep your eyes open when theydo the 'Sneaky Yellow Rock"!! And you canbet that NUMBER ONE will play oh soinnocent about it. I 'm willing to bet theydidn't even mention that call to you. Right? And you will be able to check out some ofthese people you keep hearing about andonly guess why NUMBER ONE didn't mentionthat TRAMP that kept repeatedly hanging g!!over them all nieht lone.

So now you have a reason to come togetherand leave together. However, I should warnyou that SQUARE DANCING is addictive andyou may find yourself in a dance class nextSeptember. Believe me.

Injured dancers this is something we wouldlike to see you help out in also, and youwill be able to keep your toe in the actionas well. For more information just contactAnna Damiani at 621-0862.

A NW FRIEND OF WSD

As you know, or will know by the end ofthis article, Western Star Dancers has apolicy which awards the designation 'friend"

with a corresponding badge, to anyindividual who make consistent andsubstantial contributions to the Club.

The Board of Directors (last year!) votedthis honor to Mark Savino, better known toone and all as 'Bubbles,' in part for hiswork and energy in directing La Star - Live!I986. Official presentation unfortunately gotdelayed several times during the past year.

It looked like we were all set forpresentation at this year's La Star, butBubbles' work schedule interfered at the lastminute. So we made a small presentation toBubbles on Christmas Day, as a gift fromWSD. I'm sure all Club members join withme in sending along a well-deservedcongratulations.

Speaking of La Star Live! (I986) - the videois now available from CCTV.

In sadness we note the passing of CarlHammond. Western Star Dancers wishes toextend sympathy to his friends and family.

"Learn the Other Role"(the Sequel? )

As Convention time approaches, a couplepeople have asked me if I 'd be doing some"Learn the Other Role' workshops again thisyear, along the lines of the ones that Cap and Idid last May. The answer is "Yes, if enoughpeople are interested." (Enough = at least eight, for obvious reasons.)

So' i f you are an aspir ing 'bi-dancual" andwould like to participate in a concentrated crashcourse, give me a cal l before Apri l l5th. Myhome phone is (415) 863-0990; work (415) 989-I 300 ext 232. I t doesn't take as long as peoplethink i t wi l l to achieve about half a dozen cal lsthat are "sex" calls; the main difficulty isremembering which way to look for your cornerand which hand to st ick out on the swing.

Last year, we did a pair of two-hourworkshops (one four-hour session on a weekendwould also be a possibi l i ty) , which seemed aboutthe r ight amount of t ime. This year, I 'mavai lable most Tuesday or Fr iday evenings, orweekend days. I f you want to do i t or have anyquest ions, cal l me as soon as possible, and letme know what t imes would work best for you:l ' l l l e t you know by Apr i l l5 th i f and when i t ' t ,be happen ing .

-Russ K ing-

To the Editor:

I t certainly is fun to dance to a good l ivecal ler. But i t can also be enjoyable to dance togood recorded music. Now that WSD is havingmore evenings of recorded music I think wewant to insure that a good t ime is had by al l .My recent experiences point to a general lack oforganizat ion by the record spinners of theevening with constant adjustment of theequipment and a leisurely search for records toplay. Perhaps a bi t more t ime in preparat ion forthe evening could el iminate this. The dancers ofthe Club deserve i t .

Respectful ly, Piers Greenhill

BIRTHDAYs in Mav.

Our warmest best wishes to all of these:

In the Plus progrrm, Extend the Tag now has anew name; it's just Extend. Callers have beendoing that for a while now, anyway. TripleTrade has been dropped from the Plus level -how many squares have you been in which brokedown on that one?

Current Quarterly cells for MS are Retain YourLane and Scoot and Relocate. For Plus level, the quarterly selections are Rock the Boat(familiar to us all) and Cross the Ocean.

Dropped also is the 25-wk program encompassingBasic/Mainstream/Plus calls. It 's truly a longt ime.

Thanks for the news, Bob.

At the Board meeting, Scott Carey visited toreport on Prrede Plans. Sounds like quite anoccasion!!! There's fun to be had before theparade, during the parade, after the parade, andlater that evening. You should hear about thefloat - how big is that crinoline going to be??Scott and Bill Whitefield are planning thisshindig; coordinators - South Bay, Katy andNorth Bay, Mary Ann. Western Star made theParade planners a contribution of some $ and aloan of some additional $. It is planned that allthe local clubs will participate in fun and money. We'll hope for a description of all the activitiesin next month's newsletter.

Other heppy news heard at the Board meetingdeals with our financial standing which is awhole lot sounder than a few months ago. Netincome for March was over !$1200. Much thanksto our Anniversary Dance!! and solid financialmaDagement by the Board and our Treasurer,David Garrett.

And I suppose you should be aware that theBoard has been discussing the positives andnegatives of rccord nlghts.

A FRACTION OF THE NWSWORTHY

It was a truly wonderful conventlon. Things Ienjoyed most included the quick trip Sally, Pat,and I made to Sedonna, the Intro to A-l whichwas taught by Vern Weese, the Grand March(the energy in that room was so high), sittingaround talking with people I see only once ayear and with people I see many times duringthe year but don't make the space to sit andtalk with, earning my Duck Badge for dancing inthe swimming pool.

I got a kick out of lris' presentation to TerryPresley. The women of ECR presented Terrywith the label 'Honorary Lesbiann for havingmade a significant contribution in making thewomen feel welcome in the square dancecommunity and he wore the lavender badge withpride. Her presentation was funny as well as tothe point; his acceptance was warm, personal, touching.

The folks from New York did an effective salesjob stimulating interest in the New Yorkconvention to be held Fourth of July weekend1989. They were so well organized that I canonly imagine them putting on a swell party.During the general business meeting on Sunday, the convention sites for the next several yearswere discussed - possibly I should consider doingsome other thing besides square dancing for myvacation for the next several years? Naw...

I'll connive to get some others to share theconvention with you all in next month'sNewsletter. Please volunteer and save mestrategy-planning to entice authors.

We're sorry to note the recent passing oftwo long-time members of Western Star. Carljoined us in the December 1983 class, and wasour Badgemaster for t985-86. Paul was amember of the very first WSD class, and servedon the Board from 1982 to 1984. We appreciatetheir many contributions to our square dancecommunity, and we will miss them both.

SQUARE DANCERS DO IT IN GROUPS OFEIGHT (or should)

Let me say, gentle reader, that I thinksquare dancing is the most personal, warm, friendly activity one can hope to find---asidefrom the obvious. During a tip you worktogether and have to touch, smile and laugh withseven other people and always with a big 'thankyou" at the end. Where else do you get that? But lately there have been fewer smiling faces.

From my first days at Western Star, Iheard about 'THE BOARD' as if that awesomeentity was an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-ruling body not to be crossed or questioned. When I volunteered to produce this past Club LaStar, I believed "THE BOARD" would tell mewhat it wanted and how I should do it. I waswrong. The Board is necessary because itcontrols the checkbook and it can help withproblems, but not only do the Board membersnot tell you what to do, they don't particularlywant to do it, anyway.

If just ONE person needs to doEVERYTHING, then NOTHING B,ets done becausethat person's time is spread too thin to do agood job. That's dangerous and embarrassing forthe Club. If just one person decorates foreverything all the time, then the decorations willalways look the same. That's boring andpredictable for the dancers.

Every member of this Club has his and herown special talents that can be shown off insome way - either singularly or in groups. Avariety of expressions from each Western Stardancer can make the Club a vital, enjoyableforce once again. By expanding on the idea that

square dancing is a'group activity" we can allwork together to make Wednesday nights a timeto look forward to for taking a break from allour worries and for going where everybodyknows your name.

I know a lot of you object to the nightswe don't have a live caller, but, jeeze, there areclubs in IAGSDC where they only ever havetapes. It's true that dancing to recordings weget to experience the best callers from acrossthe country. It 's my understanding that themajority of the callers we've had in the pastnow have their own clubs and are not availableto us on Wednesdays, so we have been forced todo something else. If you don't like what goeson during these tape nights, then volunteer torun one and bring your own fun, style andpanache to the proceedings. I have to thinkfast just to get myself through a tip, yet I'mscheduled to 'spin the platters" on June 8.Come and witness that and you'll probably wantto take a stab at it, too.

Lest no one else will admit it, I think theNewsletter has slipped to, dare I say it, theDULL side. Doesn't anyone take trips and dancewith other clubs anymore? We want to hearabout it. For those who missed the El CaminoReelers' wonderful cabaret, there was no reviewto bring it to life. This was how we got toknow about people and things, and I, for one, miss it. This Newsletter is EVERYONE's forum... they're printing this, aren't they?

I guess this article is just to remind peoplethat THE BOARD is not THE CLUB, themembership is, and that we should ALL take anactive part. WSD is more than the sum of itsparts. The more energy we put into it, themore enjoyment we get out of it. The moreenjoyable it is, the more members will attend. The more members we get coming regularly, themore cash in the treasury and maybe that willtranslate to lower door fees for the specialdances that everyone looks forward to so much.If you don't like something, work to change it.If you think something needs to be done, try todo it. If you don't make the effort, you're notentitled to criticize (being a Virgo, I'd burst if Icouldn't criticize!).

rile're all family.We're square dancers.rrVe're lilestern Star!Let's be proud!

The 37th NATIONAL SQUARE DANCECONVENTION with 800,000 square feet of dancefloor and enough dancers to fill those feet willtake place in Anrbelm, Cdlfornia on June 23,24,and 25th. About every l2 years, such a nationalconvention is held in California, and thepromotional literature is pretty persuasive.James Ozanich has some of the particulars. Theprice for dancing all three days is $18 inadvance and $20 at the door. There will beworkshops on topics such as'How to Run aClub" and lots of dancing (the smallest hall holds45 squares; the largest holds >250 squares). Ifanyone goes, the Newsletter editor would love tohear about it.

I 'm stil l interested in buylng e sewing machlnewhich can be used on stretch fabric and haszig-zag capability. Anyone have a machine theywant to be free of? Call Gail at 376-8967.(last month's issue had the wrong phone number;Biloxi doesn't want me to learn to sew.)

The WESTERN STAR is the newsletter ofthe Western Star Dancers, a contemporaryAmerican Square Dance Club pr imari ly servingthe San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Community.

Correspondence should be sent c/o WSD,584 Castro St. , Suite 480, San Francisco, CA94114. Deadl ine for the August issue:Ju ly l3 th a t C lub or by mai l Ju ly 20 th a t theeditor 's home.

About that Questionnaire

The rate of return of the recent WesternStar quest ionnaire demonstrated an unusual lyhigh degree of interest and involvement on thepart of both members and former members. Outf 185 quest ionnaires mai led, 54 were returned

oy June l2 ( the few late arr ivals wi l l be tal l iednext week). The rate of return was nearly 30%,more than twice that expected.

Of those who returned the quest ionnaire, 45people counted themselves as current membersand dancers. Another 4 counted themselves asmembers but not dancers. 3 were formermembers and dancers, and 2 neglected to f i l l outthe back of the quest ionnaire.

Of the 52 who responded on frequency ofattendance, 23% were regular dancers (3-4 t imesper month), l5% were frequent dancers (2-3times per month), 33% were occasional dancers( l -2 t imes per month) , l7% danced less than l -2t imes per month (usual ly only special events),and 8% had stopped dancing al together.

Suggestions for other locations includedspecific locations such as the Harvey MilkCenter, the Women's Bui lding, the Live OakSchool, and St. Boniface, and general locationssuch as near the Castro, and descriptions suchas near transportation, good parking, good (lessbad) neighborhood.

Earl ier start ing t imes most frequent ly l istedwere 7 - 7:30, and suggested dancing betweent ips included 2-step and Western l ine dancing, with some teaching.

The f inal quest ion, how to involve or re-involve more people in Western Star, el ic i ted l2lseparate suggestions. The most widely endorsedsuggestions were led by the need to expandsocial (non-dance-or iented) act iv i t ies, such aspot lucks, theater part ies, camping and bicycl ing. However, that was followed closely by therecognition of some problems such as the needfor better organization of record nights, thedesirability of another location, and the need toexpand leadership within the Club i tsel f .Improving the floor level, or at least beingaware of varying levels on the floor, werematters of some concern. Proposals to shareactivities with other clubs ranged from danceand social events to sharing beginning classeswith Foggy City and A-l c lasses with MidnightSquares. Finally, members favored increasingpublicity for both the upcoming classes and theClub itself.

A full review of the questionnaire resultswill be presented at the Quarterly meeting June29th.

A FRACTION OF THE NEWSWORTHY

Two special notes of thanks:

to the staff of our second marvelouslysuccessful Garage Sale - Denise, Freeman, Patty,Anna, Scott , John, and some others(?), as wel l asthe large number of contr ibutors of things tosel l . This group contr ibuted yet another $600+to the treasury of Western Star Dancers with acontr ibut ion to the Parade group as wel l .

And thanks are due to Rod Morrel l whowent the extra mi le to Archangel this year 'sclass. And to Don Mayou who Archangeled ( isthat a word?) through the f i rst several months. Thanks to the other folks who contr ibuted togett ing this group through - and to the Classmembers themselves who showed true gr i t inpersevering al l those months. Please welcomeeach of them as they bravely advance into themelee of Club nights.

And now to current happenings: what a t imethis is going to be! By the t ime you read this, perhaps you've seen or marched and danced withthe biggest cr inol ine in the world. (My sourcestel l me that l inear feet of cr inol ine sewedtogether this past Saturday and Sunday wouldstretch the length of l7 footbal l f ie lds!!) Somany opportunit ies to wheel and deal - the Pre-parade dance cal led by Mike Green, and theparade itself and then there's a bit more at theBank Beach and yet stil l more at the Live OakSchool and edible things too.

July is a hot month in many parts of the USA.Here in the Bay Area the cl imate isn' t hoq forus, the dancing will be. First, the free activity:celebrate the Fourth of July with us on AngelIs land - br ing a picnic and get set to dance onthe ferry (seems to me this badge is one of ourmost appropriate ones -do straight people seekthis one, too?).

A SERIES TICKET is available for July's callerswhich is a pretty impressive list. We start withDeborah Parnell (many of us danced to her callslast year at WSD) on the 2nd. Anne Uebelacherof Convention fame joins us on the l3th. Afavorite, Larry Ward, returns on the 23rd, andRoger Loney from Vallejo closes out the monthon the 30th. The series ticket costs $20 (a $27value). Keep careful track on the calendar -WSD is dark two Wednesdays this month due tospecial dances.

Harlan Kerr is emigrating from Seattle to SanFrancisco and on August 3rd, you are invited toa Party on Club night to welcome him. See thef lyer in this issue.

The San Francisco AIDS Walk will take place inGolden Gate Park on Sunday, July 24th. Anumber of our members wi l l be walking, dancing?

From our IAGSDC rep

On May 19, 1988 at 8:00 am the Board ofDirectors of the IAGSDC convened in Scottsdaleto transact the business of the association forthe year. Since the Board meets only once ayear the agenda is naturally packed with allsorts of business to be completed. For the sakeof brevity I' l l try to recap the highlights of themeeting without bor ing you with al l of thedetai ls. I f , by the way, you're interested in thedetai ls, the minutes wi l l be publ ished andavai lable soon.

Two new clubs were accepted to the Association, the Triangle Squares of Toronto and the ChitownSquares of Chicago. The success of the BannerDances from the year was reviewed and it wasagreed that the dances should continue as theyearn money for the Association.

IGGY, the resource guide for the Association waspresented by our own Freeman Stamper. It wasdetermined by the Board that IGGY wouldcontinue under the direction of Scott Careyassisted by Freeman and the Association wouldunderwrite the expenses for the publication ofthe book and its perpetual care.

The dues for the IAGSDC were increased from$10 to $25 per club as annual membership. I twas agreed that the cost wils reasonable for alland the extra income would allow the

Page 41: 1988 The Western Star

Associat ion to do more for i ts members. The ideaof incorporating the IAGSDC was discussed at'ength and altho most agreed that incorporationwas a good idea, no decisions were arrived at.A committee was formed to look into the matterfurther with advice of counsel and to reportback with a recommendation at the Boardmeeting in New York next year.

A proposal was presented to amend the by-lawsof the Associat ion regarding matters of bids tohost the annual convention. The proposedamendment was very involved and in some areasunclear. After a great deal of discussion it wasagreed the matter should be looked into furtherand reconsidered at a later date.

The fol lowing ci t ies presented bids and intentsto bid on convent ions in subsequent years:

Possibly it was the Honky Tonk Queencontestants (most of whom look better in a skirtthan I ever will) at dinner Saturday night. Itcould have been the Women in Square Dancesession where we gathered to discuss ways toget more women into square dancing. Well, ifyou were there, you probably have your ownfavorite memories of the convention -- but Ithink everyone will agree that the dancing andsocial iz ing were the highl ights.

Many kudos to the Desert Valley Squares for alltheir hard work. The Sheraton was exceptionaland I found everyone fr iendly ( including thedyke masseuse).

Once again the convention was the place torenew fr iendships and meet new dancers andwelcome new clubs to the IAGSDC. Tr iangleSquares from Toronto and the Chi- town Squaresfrom Chicago are two new clubs I enjoyeddancing with.

A review ol a great show

We had a reel good t ime! On Apri l 23rd, ElCamino Reelers held their 2nd Annual Cabaretent i t led "Rockin' and Reel in ' Saturday Night ' and, indeed, they real ly rocked! I t started with agourmet pasta dinner (catered by Becky Lake'sAooet i te Express) which lef t us al l fat and sassyand, I must confess, just s l ight ly predisposed for al i t t le snooze - that is, i f the entertainment hadnot been l ively. But l ively i t was! The showbegan with an exhibi t ion by the Foggy CityDancers Performance Team which left the non-square dancers wondering when the nextintroductory class would be held. Next came AnnBenson, Ir is Harrel l , and Karen Mackey - thehottest new gir l group to appear in the lavenderl imel ight s ince the Dyketones hi t the scene! Theysang a var iety of songs ranging from folk tocountry-western and from the 50s to contemporaryrock - performing each with a melodious 3-partharmony. Keith Bishop with his r ich bari tonevoice added a medley of torch songs to themixture.

Interspersed with the singing was theatr ical mimeperformed with palpable pathos by Terry Presley. And let's not forget Steffany who always leaves uslaughing and with the burning quest ion 'Can

sequined gowns washed in a wash tub be dried in adryer?' I never realized how enjoyable andhumorous a reading from Gertrude Stein could be

Square dancers love to eat? Make thatstatement into truth or fiction on August l3th atthe Ed Conley potluck. We've had such fun atthese shindigs in the past. The thing I likemost is being able to sit down and talk withpeople I normally only dance with - the food'sgood, too.

We got a letter the other day: Wells Fargo willmade a $10 contr ibut ion to the SF AidsFoundat ion when you open any Wel ls Fargopersonal checking account before August 26th.A special coupon is required -

,{ Letter to the editor:

Dear Editor:

I cannot let "Brenda Starr" 's comment inthe last newsletter that the Phoenix convent ionwas nthe best one yet" go unchal lenged.

While I 'm al l for promoting our annual get-togethers to the hi l t and have had a whale of at ime at each one (Am I mixing my metaphors?),I feel that the truth must be served: Phoenixwas by far the least wel l organized - ask anyonewho went on a side tr ip, for instance.. .

Personally, I think it 's a rather sadcomment that most dancers seemed to feel thehigh point of the convent ion was the hot tub.

Yours truly,

Tadd Waggoner

A FRACTION OF THE NEWSWORTHY

Their admit tance through the Pearly Gates isassured? Our new class has quite a bevy oferchangels: Yvonne Wong, Alma Payne, and RodMorrell will help the bunch through the fun-fil led weeks. Our Basic class begins Septemberl2th; the Basic segment wi l l last l5 weeks.(see James' article about Class Plans.)

Club electlons are in process. Names ofnominees were received by September 7th by theElections committee chaired by Jason Fontainewith assistance by Piers Greenhill and Gail C.Members will find ballots in their mailboxesduring the next week which are then due notlater than our Quarterly meeting September 28th.

Opportunlty continues to knock... Harry Koga has"^lunteered to do the typing part of the

sletter, and Denise took over the copying. distribution about 4 or 5 months sgo. \Yhat

remains now is to flnd rn edltor. The last issuewith the current editor will be October; I'd beglad to talk with any interested folks; my homephone number is 376-E967 (most evenings).

Have you hcard the new rounds? Our newlypurchased YrL Strckr rpceLcrr are in place andhave been used for several functions. As themembership directed at our last QuarterlyMeeting, close to $500 was spent on this newaddition to our sound. Results will be publishednext month on the membership vote on additionalexpense of roughly $2400 to bring the rest ofour system up to state-of-the-art. Those ballotson that expense were counted August 3lst , sowe'll soon know.

Our treasurer Drvid Garrett reports that weoperated with a net loss in July of $214.To give you the flavor of the statement, all ourdances were profitable with Ann Ubelackercoming in best at $185. There were 254 peopleat our dances in the month of July - that's somefancy footwork. With total expenses of $2223and total income of $2009, July's closing balancewas $4852.

Eddie. Smith has been selected by the Board toimplement his wonderful ideas for this year'sClub La Star - with a Western theme. Initialplans put the date in November - that's prettysoon. More news in this space next month:keep your ears open, too. If you're interestedin participating, Eddie will, I 'm sure, be glad tohear from you.

Gratitude was expressed at July's Board meetingto Mary Pet Power for taking over the sodarole. Those sodas taste real fine between tips.

Our September calendar shows good dancing instore. Mel Llter will be with us Sept. 7th, BobBel lv l l le on Sept. 2lst , and Club Cal lers (seeChelsea's article this newsletter) for the GeneralMeeting on the 28th. On the l4th WSD wi l l bedark as we travel (by train - some of us) to ElCamino Reelers where John Sybalski will becalling. Could this travelling business be thebeginning of a new tradition? And then we eatand play again - Sept 24th at an East Bay event- plcnic and phy in Ti lden Perk.

Club Callers

There's a BIG difference in Club Caller Nightsthese days! At least nine separate callerscelebrated the evenings with hash and singingcalls during the last two Club nights which wereorganized by Eddie Smith and Rod Morrell.

For Western Star, Bob Bellville, Bill Whitefield,Harlan Kerr, Tadd Waggoner and Rod Morrell didthe honors. Foggy City was ably represented byRen Brown, Vic Buck (cowboy hat and all) andPaul Almy. Goldrush sent Ric Wheeler tocomplete the caller collection. (Sincerestapologies if I 've missed any callers. I am stilloverwhelmed by the select ion of r iches!)

The variety was del ightful , chal lenging, sometimes funny, and brought out the best indancers and callers alike. Clearly only the bestof the best were sung and cal led, a remarkablereview of local talent.

Eddie Smith, who first offered to turn 'record

nights" into live-but-local caller evenings, saidthat he had begun to investigate the idea inPhoenix, and that the response from callers hadbeen overwhelmingly posit ive. No one turneddown his requests, and the turnout for the firsttwo evenings has been excel lent.

All that remains now is for the word to g,et outto the dancers. The Welcome Harlan dance waswell attended, but the last Club night had onlytwo squares. With so many callers and a limitednumber of dancers, purple heart badges shouldhave abounded. Dancing in a square with threecallers usually warrants a purple heart - andsometimes bandaids as well. It speaks well forour cal lers that some of the dancers never evenrecognized the potential hazards of their square.Any dancer who can't remember whether he/shedanced with three callers hasn't suffered enoughto deserve a badge.

There will be more live caller nights in thefuture -

September Class Plans

Jason Fontaine, Paul Scardina, and JamesOzanich have been working on a project tospread the word about our September Basicsquare dance class. They have contacted gay-related organizations who publish newsletters fortheir membership and asked them to insert ablurb with details about our class.

In addition, a large number of flyers have beenreproduced with general square dance informationand specific details for our particular class. Each member of WSD is encouraged to take ahandful of the tri-folded flyers at Club nightSept. 7th and hand them out to friends andother interested people.

This year, the Basic class will be taught by ourown Bob Bel lv i l le. The class wi l l meet Mondaynights from 8:15 to t0:15 at the YMCA start ingScpt. l2th. As usual, the first two nights areintroductory and no fees will be charged. Theclass wi l l run unt i l Dec. l9th. That 's l3Mondays, not including the two free nights inSeptember. As per the past several years, thecost for this session is only $40. (Class willmeet October lOth, Columbus Day, even thouglsome businesses are on holiday.)

All Western Star dancers are encouraged toattend the class as often as possible as angels.Current members of WSD may attend classes atno charge even if you are going to learn theother dance roll. Over 100 people have alreadygiven us their names and we hope to have alarge class'

- James Ozanich -

A little Sunshine

Jim Head is now our own 'Little Mary" Sunshine. He will send cards and notes on behalf ofWestern Star Dancers to Club members andothers on noteworthy or cardworthy occasions. If you know of some event where a card fromWestern Star Dancers would be appropriate, please fet Jim know directly (415-769-9947).Events might include, but are not limited to,promotions, anniversaries, hospitalizations, retirements, etc.

A little story

fhis is a story about four people namedEverybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done andEverybody w:ls sure that Somebody would do it.Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.Somebody got angry about that, because it wasEverybody's job. Everybody thought thatAnybody could do it, but Nobody realized thatEverybody wouldn't do it. It ended up thatEverybody blamed Somebody when Nobody didwhat Anybody could have done!

Now the main point is this, it is time for a newBoard to be elected. If you are thinking aboutrunning, do it! Don't stand back and complain. You can make a difference. If you feel that youdon't want to be on the Board or your scheduleis such that you couldn't be on the Board,Western Star Dancers needs new committees forthe coming year. Why not volunteer this year tohelp out. For example, we need people to helpset up for dances and to help cleanupafterwards. This only takes a few minutes andit shouldn't always be the same three or fourpeople; also we need Angels for the new classstart inS, September 12. We wi l l be having newcommittees and new chair-persons starting soon,so plan now to get involved with your Club.

- Eddie Smith -

(ed. note - it is too late to be nominated forthe Board for this year; the rest of theoppotunities await, for sure.)

What a wonderful time we had during the GeyPrlde Parade with giant crinoline! Scott Careyand Bill Whitefield sure know how to give aparty! The marvelous day was the result of thecreative energy of several truly gifted people, the hard labor of manyi a fair amount of money, and the weather fairy who was good to us. Thesad event of the weekend of course was thetheft of one of the generators at a cost of over$600. So many people came forward to help outwith the net shortage of $334.

['ve been trying to write this article for twomonths. There are so many neat times tomention - from the idea stage of participating inthe parade, the idea of the crinoline, the

construction (hours and hours) of the crinoline, construction of the metal contraption on whichit dangled, planning and coordination in which somatry participated, the monitor training, the Pre-parade dance with fantastic turnout and a finecaller, to the day of the parade with coffee andlast minute exercises, the march itself withskilled dancers who didn't fall while dancing atrapid pace down Market, to the platter spinners, and the truck driver (that was a stick shift), thelittle old ladies who darted out from the crowdfrom time to time to have their pictures takenwith the crinoline (at risk to life and limb), thefolks who tended our booth during and after theparade. Then moving on to Guerilla Squaresnear the Bank, and dinner and dancing(?) at LiveOak School. Some people with incrediblestamina hung in there for all of the above;others of us participated on a much smallerscale. My frustration with this article is that Ihad truly hoped to get everyone's namementioned, and I've had to let the article gowith only the top two. What a gorgeous, funday it was!

A FRACTION OF THE NEWSWORTHY

The first class session was well-attended. Therewere about 7 squares, including angels (roughly35 new people). The importance of this infusionof new dancers into our activity cannot be over-:mphasized. Please lend your suppport wheneverpossible.

There will be many opportunities for dancing inOctober. Ben Goldberg will be with us October5th, followed by Goldrush hosting the evening ofOctober l2th. We will be dark October l9th, sothat we can be all l it up October 20th whenDrve Stevens will be in town and calling for usthat Thursday evening. Bill Harrison will callfor our Hallowe'en dance on October 26th. Backat the beginning of the month, troop up to ,^1,Sacramento to the Capital City Squares Nate '?

Bllss Hoe-down (for info call (916) 344-6739).

CIub elections are winding down. Ballots shouldhave been received by all Club members. Theyare due back not later than our Quarterlymeeting which is just a few days away onSeptember 28th. Results will be announced atthat time.

Our treasurer David Garrett reports that weoperated with a net loss in August of $667.To give you the flavor of the statement, most ofour events roughly break even, with +$21 for themonth of Club nights. For special items, such asadvertising expenses for the new class oradvance money for the Silver La Star Saloon andTilden picnic, we need to make money somewhereelse. With total expenses of $1173 and incomeof $484, August 's closing balance was $4185.

Along financial lines as well, the membershipvoted in response to the sound system poll:43 in favor, 13 opposed, and I abstention. Thisexpenditure of $2294 has now been made, thestate-of-the-art equipment is in use at the Y forour dances, and the treasury had a currentbalance as of the last board meeting of $14E4.

Keep November l2th open for attending orparticipating in the Silver La Star Saloon, inproduction now with Eddie. Smith.

Opportunity continues to knock... This is the lastissue of this newsletter with the current editor.A couple of possible volunteers stil l remain to becontacted/pursuaded.

At the Board Meeting

Lots of interesting things happen at Boardmeetings. For example, at the Septembermeeting, the business of ex officio members ofthe Board voting on Board business wasdiscussed. This issue has been around for awhile now. Freeman proposed at a ClubQuarterly meeting back in December of 1986 thatsuch members not be allowed to vote. Quotingfrom the minutes of that meeting:

"The issue of Board voting privilegesfor ex officio Board members wasdebated at length. A complicatedseries of motions, amendments, andcounter-motions was finally resolvedwith an agreement that (l)the Boardwould obtain legal opinion as towhether extension of voting privilegesto ex officios in any way jeopardizedthe Club's legal status; (2)the Boardwould continue to allow ex officios tovote unless and until there was legalreason to do otherwise."

Over the past couple of months, Freeman hasbeen in correspondence with the elected Boardmembers advising them that he has obtainedcounsel from an attorney who says that we arein violation of our non-profit incorporationpapers when we allow ex officio members tovote. Other Club members in the distant andrecent past have talked with attorneys who don'tnecessarily agree. But the short of it is that inorder to continue to allow ex officios to vote,we would need to pay legal counsel to actuallyinvestigate the matter. And that's money wedon't want to spend (or have to spend, either). So at the Quarterly meeting, we'll need todiscuss this matter again and achieve someresolution. For those who don't know, currentex officio members include the secretary, thetreasurer, the IAGSDC rep, and the classarchangel.

Another agende ltem was set for this Quarterlymeeting. Eddie Smith proposed and the Boardsupports the following:

From the end of the Mainstreamclasses through the Plus classes: allr#estern Star dances and Club nighsshall be Mainstream and Plus leveldances. When the current class hasfinished the Plus level section,Western Star shall become a Plus levelclub again.

Other business which came before the Boardincluded approving a bud3et for the Silver LrStar Saloon. Roughly $t000 was allocated forthis event. Since we will not have that muchmoney in the treasury prior to the event asthings stand now, Denise Young volunteered tocoordinate a garage sale. Yea to Denise and theothers who have so graciously donated time, effort, and items for selling.

At this meeting, the Board heard a brief reportabout the San Francisco FLY-IN which is beingset up by a group of San Francisco dancers andis scheduled for the weekend of April 29, 1989.The group includes President Anna Damiani,Treasurer Galen Workman, and Secretary DougEldridge. The Board of Western Star voted torelease Johnny Preston from previous engagementby Western Star so that he can call for this fly-in. The other principal caller will be SaundraMcElroy-Bryant.

The World's Biggest Square Dance

June 22,6am, "Time to get up" hollers Sue as

"he knocks on the door. "What's going on?", Irink. Then I realize that today we drive to the

rTth National Square Dance Convention. QuicklyI finished loading the car. It was a long driveto Anaheim but we entertained ourselves withanticipation. This was to be my first and Sue'sthird National (Anaheim '76 and Seattle '81).

We arrived about 3pm, picked up our registrationpackets and drove l0 miles south to Tustin tomy friends Bill and JJ. Wednesday night wedanced with their club, the Golden StateSquares, and then went to the convention centerfor a trail end dance. There were four dances, each hosted by recording companies. Sue and Idanced with Kalox Records which featured BillHarrison, who had called for Western Star andPACE the previous weekend.

At llpm an after party was held, and for twohours each tip featured at least two callers. Itwas some of the best dancing of the weekendand the convention hadn't even officially started. This dance provided me with an opportunity tomeet many callers, including two young callersfrom Sweden. (We tentatively have plans for'rem to call for us in March 1989.)

Thursday morning Sue and I spent much of thet ime in the C-l hal l . The C-l and C-2 hal lscould comfortably dance l6 squares each. Theother three Hilton halls (A-1, A-2, and DBDPlus) held 50 squares. We also spent time in themain convention center which had five halls eachcapable of holding approximately 250 squares. There were over 20 halls total for rounddancing, clogging, and contra.

That afternoon the formal opening ceremoniesled off with a parade led by Mickey and MinnieMouse. Thursday evening we enjoyed a widearray of callers including one of my favorites,Mike Jacobs. I have heard there were over 675callers in attendance ranging from local clubcallers to well known National callers and closeto 27,000 delegates. Amazing that the callersvolunteered their time and expertise in additionto paying their own transportation costs.

Friday was similar to Thursday in dancing andactivities. I understand the public biddingsssion by four organizations for the 1992rnvention site was very informative. IAGSDC

reps might attend one of these sessions in thefuture. Each organization was given 20 minutes

to make a presentation and then about l0minutes of question and answer by the ExecutiveCommittee. There was a private more in-depthsession also.

Through the convention, there were numerouseducational seminars, on topics such as club by-laws, computer applications in square dancing, after parties, and even a calling course thatgave college credit.

My plans were to drive home Saturday morningin order to attend the Saturday night WesternStar Pre-parade Dance. Sue and I were havingsuch a great time we simply could not tearourselves away. Saturday was also reserved forshopping. There were over 150 vendors includingeverything related to square dancing (soundsystems, western shirts, badges, and of course, crinolines - no, I didn't buy one!) I didpurchase 37th National customized trinkets, acollector's spoon (for my biological mother) anda collector's thimble (for my Bradley mother).

Saturday night I joined others in an all gay, male square (Bill, JJ, Mark and Ralph of GoldenState Squares, Ben, Brad and Kim of TinseltownSquares, and Mike of Rosetown Ramblers). Wedanced several tips both in the back of the halland very near the stage when Larry Ward andYerne Weese were calling. We got lots of looksbut no one really seemed to care.

After dancing ended we headed across the streetto Disneyland for the greatest after party ofthem all. The amusement park was openexclusively to square dancers from midnight to 5am. Our group exited the park * 4:45; I sleptfrom 5:00 until about l0:30, and after severalcups of coffee I was ready to go again.

Sunday we attended a special benefit dance.Organized by Mike Seastrom, Callerlab sponsoredthis dance to raise funds for the promotion ofsquare dancing. The goal was to raise $100,000for tv commercials for local organizations tosubmit to local stations for broadcast. Therewere about 60 squares and 20 callers for a funwind-down to the weekend.

It was a great weekend! I highly recommendattending this festival in the future. TheNational Square Dance Convention always beginson the 4th Thursday in June. In 1989, OklahomaCity is on your way to New York and oneweekend before; perhaps I'll see you there.
