Calathea steyermarkii is most closely related to C. gymnocarpa Kennedy and C. multicincta Kennedy, sharing a similar growth habit, short flowering period with numerous flowers produced per day, thin-textured bracts, and lack ofbracteoles. This species is named in honor of Dr. Julian Steyermark for his valuable contribution to our knowledge of the flora of Venezuela.
