•T-iwm:- Taconic Running Life SEPTEMBER, 1988 H r 1 1 1 i 1 For quite a while, the likelihood of having a biathlon this year seemed dim. However, with a new sponsor, Gerry Truglia, manager of Car-Tune on Route 6 in Mahopac, help from the town of Mahopac in obtaining insurance, and increased entry fees, the event turned o u t t o b e o n e o f t h e m o s t s u c c e s s f u l i n recent years. After problems were overcome, the eleventh TRRC biathlon occurred on Aug. 7. Over 150 competitors enjoyed this unique e v e n t w h i c h e n t a i l s a 3 - m i l e r u n o v e r s o m e pretty hilly, rough terrain, followed by a 1/2 mile swim in Lake Sycamore. The men's race started at 8:45 and approxi mately 120 men raced through the streets in anticipation of cooling off in the water. Tom Hromas finished his run in approximately 3rd or 4th place and swam furiously to over come the leaders. He emerged on the beach 1st in a time of 28:12. Tom was followed by J i m K a n n e r w h o fi n i s h e d i n 2 8 : 5 4 a n d t h i r d place was claimed by Jose Lopez who had a time of 29:24. Fourth place man was Don Maclntyre, 30:09 and fifth was Lincoln Taylor, who travelled all the way from Albany to participate. The men's race was exciting, but the women's definitely was neck and neck. After finishing the run in approximately 4th and 5th places, the two leaders emerged from the water together, saw each other and started sprinting for the beach. Although their times were the same, officials gave the race to Joanne Gelsi as she was a few inches ahead as their bodies touched the sand. What a finish! Joanne, who came up from Irving- ton, finished in 32:11, just hundredths of a second ahead of Candice Prior from Redding, Conn. If these two women come again next year, we may need a photo finish! (Hear that. Jack Brennan!) Not to be upstaged, less than a minute later, the third and fourth place women finished, and guess, what, another neck and neck sprint for the sand! Never let it be said that women aren't exciting. Rita Cyran finished in 33:09 and Annelie Chapman was fourth in 33:10. It was noted by our famous photographer-runner Jack Brennan that it was easy to tell the runners from the swimmers in the women's division. What do you mean by that, Mr. Brennan? (continued p. 2) Joanne Gelsi (right) over Candice Pryor. Brennan. with a Photo slim lead by Jack

There is a local saying that if you want to find out which day during thesummer will be the most hot and humid, check to see when the Jan PeekRace is scheduled, and that will be it! In retrospect, the several awfulweeks in August when there was no break from the heat paled Jan Peek bycomparison. However, it was felt that moving the start time to one hourearlier did help somewhat. To take the good with the bad—some runnershad to be turned away since there was no post-registration....but seriously, people!! This race has been run for eleven years!! Aren't runners settingthe date aside and pre-registering yet, given its popularity??

Anyway, Anthony Smith did "one more than a hat-trick" by winning his fourthJan Peek in a row. The young man from Portchester had an excellent time of32:13, 1:11 minutes off the record pace he set last year. In second placewas Leon Thomas, of New York City, in 33:35, and third was Chris Bloxom,Peekskill, 33:59. Among the women, Mary-Fanelli Lund of Peekskill and theSuper Runners Shop at the finish line, ran away from the other women inthe race and finished in a fine 40:44. Second was Laurie Simunek, ofMahopac, 42:49, and Diane Wagner, 28 of Mt. Kisco was third in 43:06.

This is a special race due in no small part to the enormous participation byPeekskill residents, organizations, shopkeepers, etc. Everyone who has anything to do with Peekskill seems to be involved in the race, from the localhomeowners who stand by with welcome hoses and water cups, to race directorDon Ettinger, who "does it all." Congratulations to all on a job well done!!

Doug Mi l ler ran away f rom a l l compet i t ion in the open d iv is ion, fo l lowed byDenis Donohue and John Hal l inan. Ron Herreid, not e l ig ib le for an awardbecause he runs on a college team, provided some comic relief. Ron appearedon the final night dressed "total ly weird," in his sister's halter top (Ihope it 's not really his!!), a brown leather fur-l ined, ear-flapped hat,p in-str iped pants cut off at the knees, long underwear and black socks. As he was warming up, a man running on the track looked at him and remarked,"you must be one hell of a runner!"

The master's race once again provided some great, almost "photo-finishes,"in the last event as Carmelo Roldan and Pete Mastel l i spr inted for thefinish. The varied talents in the longer distance vs. the sprints madefor an ever-changing point spread, which kept up the enthusiasm of spectatorsand competitors alike. In the end, it was Pete ("I'm out of shape") Corsinowinning overal l , fo l lowed by Carmelo Roldan, and Pete Mastel l i and JackBrennan tied for third place.
