Taconic Running Life SEPTEMBER, 1987 JORGENSEN WINS AGAIN A T F R . M O O N E Y Somehow, It wouldn't seem like the Fourth of July without the Father Mooney Race. The 15th running of this classic took place, as usual, in extremely hot and humid weather. Watching from the 2-mile mark, most runners appeared very warm and uncomfortable early on. Lori Jorgensen, who, it seems, never fails to turn in a superb performance, took first place overall in this race, a feat she has accom plished many times before—eight times in eleven attempts—that's a great "batting averagel" Speaking of batting averages, the men's winner, Larry Hyde, had been at Yankee Stadium the previous evening watching fire works when he decided to come up and run the race the following day. Larry expected to do well, and was very pleased at winning. Perhaps he had an "extra edge" because he is getting married in two weeks. His wife-to-be, Carol Stewart, also finished the race. Good way to get rid of those pre-nuptial jitters. Others added some "local color" to the race: Joe Albanese, carrying the American flag, completed the course accompanied by son, John. Joe, who is running for Supervisor of the Town of North Castle, recently competed a formidable project: he ran on every road in the town that will be under his jurisdiction if he wins the election. Ex-TRRC President Dan Caffrey com pleted the race with his daughter, who is about the leave for a few years' stint with the Peace Corps overseas. Refreshments were provided after the race, and the sponsors, Spain Insurance Agency and Fisher Brothers Chevrolet, are to be thanked for their support.

HOT DAY! TOUGH COURSE! JAN PEEK!The Jan Peek is characterized by several qualities. It is a difficult course, with anunrelenting ascent of more than 400 feet in the first four miles. The weather isusuallv atrocious: hot, humid and sunny. It is, nevertheless, a popular race, attracting many local runners as well as competitors from surrounding states. This isdue to its good organization (plaudits to John Burns, the race director), strongsupport from several community organizations, and the sponsorship of D. Bertoliniand Sons. The Peekskill and Cortlandt residents contribute to the uniqueness of therace by their support of the runners. All along the course, people have their gardenhoses out, wetting down any runners who might be interested (most of us are). Andthe enthusiastic cheering of spectators along the finish is guaranteed to take 20seconds off your time! The post-race festivities are another popular aspect. There'splenty of liquid refreshment and snacks, as well as live musical entertainment. This year, the race again lived up to its reputation. Temperature and humiditywere "as bad as can be" for the 10th annual running of the event on July 12. Nevertheless, over 700 runners lined up at the 9am start. Some hoped to run their best, despite impossible conditions; others resigned themselves to a pleasant fun run.Among the former group was Anthony Smith, who not only won the race, butbroke the course record, which he previously shared with Otis Sanders. He described the course as "hard as heck" but said he enjoyed himself. With a time of31:11, he was more than 2 minutes ahead of second-place finisher, Ted Sinclair(33:37). Third place went to Craig Rover with a time of 34:35. Cookie Cruz wasalso virtually unchallenged for first place among the women as she cruised in witha time of 41:41. (Lori Simunek, who might have finished second if she had continued on her pace, dropped out when her husband Bill collapsed in the final mile.)But as Casey Stengel once said "it ain't over till it's over". So second and thirdplaces went to TRRC members Claire Kenny (45:05), and Linda Geppert (45:13).Taconic was well represented in the race. While many of us chose to take it easy,we had a strong showing of age-group award winners:

Tim Giambalvo, Mahopac, 2nd 14 and under, 48:18Jim Meadows, Croton, 3rd 20-29, 35:35Joe Porcaro, Putnam Valley, 1st 30-39, 36:28Bob Hermesch, Montrose, 2nd 30-39, 36:47Frank George, West Point, 3rd 30-39, 37:10Jack Culkin, Suffern, 2nd 40-49, 36:45Frank Sabito, Peekskill, 1st 50-59, 39:21Owen (Prez) McCrudden, 2nd 50-59, 41:21Dom DiLauria, Irvington, 2nd 60 + , 43:15Pierce Brennan, Peekskill, 3rd 60 +, 46:07Lindsay Tyberg, Peekskill, 1st 14 and under, 56:24Diane Wagner, Mt. The Titicus Reservoir 7-inile race was run July 19 on a very hot, humid, stickyday (so what else is new this summer?), but not as bad as Jan Peek, I was toldby finishers of both. This is a pretty course, challenging enough for the first5 1/4 miles, then a shady, almost-two-mile downhill fast finish.

Barbro Thelemark, Helen Gordon, and Melanie Mulvihill decided to enter as a women'steam, and were told by the race official to see him afterwards with the five firstfinishers from our club. Afterwards, we found Sharon Pearlman had run a verycommendable 52:00, and placed her name on the roster. Imagine our delight whenwe found "our own" Lori Jorgensen had won the race overall in a time of 41:58!!We added her name to the list as well, and the Taconic Women's Team is proud toannounce its first overall victory. WATCH OUT, WORLD, HERE WE COME!! In twoyears, we are hoping to have both an open and master's team (we're waiting forH e l e n G o r d o n t o t u r n 4 0 ) .

Barbro "haven't run in two weeks" Thelemarck, est imated a ten-minute mi le forher pace, but finished in 53:45, well under her guess, and good for third placeamong the 40-49 women. Helen Gordon ran 49:10, just a shade over the 7-minutep e r m i l e m a r k , c a p t u r i n g t h e 3 0 - 3 9 c r o w n .

Other members of TRRC who competed were Brian Wheaton, Jan Wheaton, Don Villeneuve,Bob Kantor, Alan Marmor, Doug Miller, Jane Kartsch, Rich Mattey, Don Ettinger, andSkip Pearlman. D ' S7The "Rodney Dangerfield of the laconic Road Runners Club" is proud to announcethat our annual dinner dance will be held at the luxurious Colonial Terrace onFriday evening, November 6, 1987, from 7:00 to 12:00 midnight. This year wewill have less talk, more music and dance. Be reminded that this affair (nopun intended) is not only for runners, so please invite your more sedentaryfriends and neighbors. We promise to keep the running talk to a minimum.

Included in the evening's festivities: Continental Hour of full smoragasbord;assorted miniature hot hors d'ouevres, and one hour of unlimited drinks. Thechoices of entree include: Prime Ribs of Beef, Chicken, or Fish. All thisfor just $30 per person (SUCH A DEAL!). To assure you a variety of musicyou can dance to, we will have music all night from that world-renowneddisc jockey, John E. Dee Jay (honest, that's his name!).

For further information and reservations, don't contact Carmelo; like ourbeloved" president, Carmelo doesn't always know what is going on his

administration (that's Ron, not Owen). Seriously, though, call Carmelo,at 245-6969, he might not know the answer but he knows someone who does(Harry and Sue, HELP!!!)

So leave your running shoes and bring your dancing you-know-what's, 'causew e r e g o i n g t o h a v e a b a l l ! !

TACONIC DASH AND SPLASH A SMASHEvery year our club puts on a few events which are outside the realm of the usual (ho-hum)lOK. In this category', the Biatlilon is one of the most popular events. The race begins witha 3-mile run which is partly on roads and partly along a "cow path" through the woods. This leg ends at the beach at Sycamore Park and is immediately followed by the half-mileswim on a triangular-shaped course around the lake. This year roughly 200 people turnedout to compete in the event. Race directors Howie Bashant and Sue Then (with help fromPete Corsino and Brian WTieaton) had the course clearly marked with arrows and signs onthe roads and baUoons in the water. (The balloons, according to Howie, were just markersand were NOT for hanging onto.) Prior to the race. Sue and Brian exercised their creativetalents (Sue especially) in writing numbers on the competitors' arms and legs with magicmarker. Brian remarked that you could tell the runners from the swimmers because therunners had such skinny arms that the numbers had to be written on sideways. The men's race began at 9:00 with about 160 competitors. The 31 women started off fifteen minutes later. Edan Jones was the overall winner with a time of 26:15, just ahead ofLarry Blomberg (26:47). Michael Spain was third (28:23). Womens' winner LynneBlomberg was in at 30:50, with Lori Jorgensen close behind at 31:37. Barbara Eraser(32:16) was third.Afterwards, many people stayed on to enjoy the annual club picnic and take advantage ofthe recreational facilities of the Sycamore Park.

The 1987 Summer Track Series was held at the Yorktown High School Track, underthe directorship of Tony Galfano. While attendance was down, and the post-racece leb ra t ion a l i t t l e more " l ow-key" than in p r io r yea rs , never the less the competition was fierce, especially among the "older" (you should excuse the expression)r u n n e r s ,

Pete Corsino pretty much had his own way in the Master's Race, and the battle was forfor the next few places. The Roldan-Oxman yearly "Clash of the Titans" was on, and untilthe last night, Carmelo was talking about looking for a bowling league that meetson Wednesdays. However, Carmelo took second, edging out Mark by 135 points.

Quite a duel emerged in the 50's age group, which was good to see, since theserunners were only recent ly g iven a separate age category due to their increasedparticipation. It was touch and go for a while, but Jerry Taub triumphed oversecond place Elton Robinson, and for third place, Noel Lazarus edged out LarryThorp by a mere five points ! !

Among the "under 40*s," Doug Miller was out in front, but did not run on thelast evening, which included two events, so a new winner's circle emerged, withJeff Oxman tak ing firs t p lace, John Hal l inan second, and Steve Hoanzl th i rd .

The women's field was small, but very enthusiastic. Cina Gorman won the opencategory, and the Master's crowns were taken by Peg Meisler in first place andKarole Colebrook in second. (I can't resist saying it was heartwarming to seeGina Gorman come in first in a mixed men's and women's heat.)

Complete results will be in the next newsletter, and awards will be given out atthe Dinner Dance on November 6, 1987 (see page 10 of this newsletter).
