•J'R'RC* Taconic Running Life •T4Wl^* SjA J A N U A R Y 1 9 8 3 A recent article claimed walking to be the new number one exercise. I have no quams about that: walking is certainly as beneficial as running. One thingthat does puzzle me is to how these researchers arrive at their numbers. There are, according to the article, three million people less jogging now than there were is 1980. S o b e i t . I a m n o t i n a p o s i t i o n t o s u p p l y f a c t s , b u t I d o f e e l t h e numbers racing have not decreased in our immediate area. Certainly the number of entries may not have surpassed previous years. However, the number of races has increased and competition is tougher for race directors in a t t r a c t i n g e n t r a n t s . This last quarter has shown a continued interest. Ossining upped their total from last year - thanks to the efforts of Roy Arnesen. The Harry Chapin lOK continued to draw well and despite a low-key pre-publicity approach. Skinner's Greeley lOK fell just short of 600. Watch out for a dramatic increase in Guiding Eyes lOK next year. Almost 300 ran this year, but there will be runners flocking for PRs when they hear about the flatness of the course. With the amount of money being spent by NBC for the '84 Olympics there will be TV hype as never seen before. The sport will undoubtedly generate interest over and beyond the norm. It will not be surprising to see that rub off taking place this year and building to a crescendo in 1984. We, at TRRC, will be a part of this year's scene again. Unlike other organizations we will strive to be a part of the community and a service to the runner. Continued diversification consisting of 100 yard sprints to half-marathons to biathlons to couple's relays to cross country to point-to- pointers for runners ages 6 and up will remain the underlying philosophy. A schedule of upcoming races is inside with a membership (for renewal or new applicants) on our back cover. Our best wishes go out to you for a healthy, happy and injury free good running new year. It should be exciting. B e a p a r t o f i t .

5K TUNE-UP RACE IS (MATCH-MAKING) SUCCESS

by Howie Bashant

Near record temperatures spurred a record 85 post registrants -as compared w i th on ly 30 pre- reg is t ran ts - fo r a to ta l o f 116 fin ishersin our 5K tune-up race run December 5, at Roosevelt (nee Mohansic)S t a t e P a r k , Yo r k t o w n .

Dennis Sprick, Middletown, N.Y., outran John Holland and GarySteinel over the last three-quarters of a mile as he charged up theparking lot //A hill to take command. The three had run within stepsof each other unti l Sprick made his move to win in 16:10.

Holland was second with a 16:20 clocking. Steinel showed his ever-increas ing fo rm wi th a 16 :25 fo r th i rd p lace.

Gina Gorman had no trouble winning the women's division with an18:20. Teresa Vail, Pine Plains, garnered third spot, outkicked byDanbury's Jane DeMarco over the last few yards. Their times were16:13 and 16:16, respect ive ly.

During post race gathering there was much negotiating among themen and women as matchups were made for the upcoming Couple's Relay. •T r a d i n g w a s l i v e l y a s e v i d e n c e d b y C a r m e l o R o l d a n . C a r m e l o w e n t f r o ma pair ing with Connie Lyke (who was suddenly available because herpartner, Dave Walsh, couldn't run) to Susan Blaisdell of Danbury, whohad won the 40-49 age group among the women with a 20:05.

Carmelo's shrewed bargaining, however, was negated when Richard DeMarco, Susan's coach, insisted she run with him. I t seems Richard hadthe same goal as Carmelo, that is, unseat Dan Caffrey and his partner(who at this point was unknown) as reigning 80-99 combined age champion.

that the high percentage of runners completing ultras reflects not the degree ofdifficulty so much as the h^avy experience, not to say, age and the general daftness of the handful who try such events.

Actually I think most ultra runners run all distances and are only unusual inhaving discovered the special satisfactions of ultra events.

There is a satisfaction to be got from going further but the chief attraction ofthe ultra lies in the different kind of challenge it represents. It requires adiffereent approach to shorter races, including the marathon.

The main thing is that the ultra is much slower.Ultras are endurance tests, rather than speed tests. It is significant that the

U.S.A.*s fastest man at 10,000 metres on the track, and the second fastest at5,000 metres, Aloerto Salazar, is also the world record holder for the marathon. The marathon is a speed contest. Salazar's pace in his world record mar?thon was4:54 per mile -only 10 per cent slower than the pace of his American record 10,000metres on the track. Even at much lower levels of ability one finds the same 10per cent difference between one person's best lOK and marathon pace. That's whythat marathon is a very demanding race. To run to your potential you must maintain a pace only 10 per cent slower than your best lOK time over four times thedistance. For most of us this is very hard since it means going uncomfortablyfast from the start and trying to hold that pace.

That s why you should consider the ultra. Even the very best ultra men go muchslower than the best marathoners. The World and U.S. best for 50 miles on theroads is Barney Klecker's 4:51:25. That's a mile pace of 5:50, a pace 19 per centslower than Salazar's record marathon pace. At distances beyond the marathon theaverage pace falls off sharply. Its hardly surpirsing really since the body canonly store a strictly finite quantity of readily-convertible energy and there arepractical limitations to the number of training miles.

The ultra runner learns to maintain his effort over great distances (and time)by carefully husbanding his strength and going slower.

There are several techniques for doing this according to the gurus of ultrarunning. It is most comforting to know that walking -at planned intervals- isconsidered perfectly okay -in fact is recommended for all but the elite class atdistances beyond lOOK.

You may have noticed that in this discussion I've mentioned the ultra mainly interms of 50 miles and up. Fifty miles races are easily the most popular ultras. The 50K is comparatively rare. We are lucky to have one of the best ( a Met TAGChampionship) in our own back yard. Don't think that because Sybil is 31.1 milesit isn't a real ultra. This is the course of which U.S.A.'s 24 hour recordholder,Cahit Yeter, said "I've run races in 22 countries and this is the most difficultc o u r s e I ' v e e v e r r u n . "

Running Sybil is a matter of control rather than speed. That makes it different-not tougher- than shorter races. Plan your pace conservatively. You might eventry Walt Stack's approach: start slow and taper off. Or try a pace 19 percentslower than your marathon standard. Start at a comfortable pace and continue thatway. This an event to savor. No hassle and crush at the start. You won't haveto tear along worrying about every second or every pitstop. After all, short stops

conserve your energy. And you will coast through some pretty scenery asthe countryside commences its Spring flourishes. Moving smoothly you listen toyour body. You plan your effort. At the marathon point you're still in controland feeling strong. Now for a final push on the last mostly downhill 4.9 miles.

Afraid of Sybil? No way. Control your pace and cruise to a happy first ultra.

TRACK ETIQUETTE

The following pointers are reprinted from the Clifton Track ClubJanuary, 1983 issue of their Newsletter. As many of you are eitherbeginning track work outs for the first time or starting your annualSpring interval training after a winter lay off, the following guidelines,if followed will make your training safer and more enjoyable....as i^doing intervals can be called enjoyable under the best conditions.1. When there are many persons running on a track at the same time but overdifferent distances and at different paces, things can get crowded. Toavoid congestion, the universal custom among track runners is to allow thepersons actually working out to use the inside lanes. Jogging and walkingshould be done to the outside, away from the curb at least two or threelanes. NO WALKING IN THE INSIDE LANES.

2. Faster runners overtaking slower runners (or runners who are forgetfully walking in the inside lanes) use the word "TRACK!" to indicate thata faster runner is approaching from behind. Track etiquette demands thata walking or jogging runner in the inside two lanes get out of the way immediately by either stepping off the track to the inside or by moving outto lane three. If you are actually running fast (for you) and faster runners approach from the rear and call "TRACK", the polite thing to do isstep off or move—but not to interfere with your own workout.

Sometimes a small knot of runners moving at a 6:00/mile pace will beovertaken by faster runners running 440s (^ mile). The slower runnersshould not continue to block the entire track; but need not give the entiretrack in the middle of a part of their workout. Especially in the straightaways, the polite thing to do is move out onto the line between lanes 1and 2 and allow the faster runners to slip through on the inside.3. The shortest way around the track is to the inside. One lap arounda 440 yard track in lane 2 takes 8 more yards than lane 1. If you are rurunning a series of repeats or laps with others, take turns using thei n s i d e l a n e .

4. When you end a repeated distance you are tired; but remember that otherrunners may be coming up right behind you. As you reach your finish pointlook back and then move out to lane 3 to walk, jog and recover.5. Avoid accidents. Always look for runner traffic before you cross thet r a c k .
