“You can’t afford to take all those penalties against the Russians because it’s just a matter of time until they score,” said Sweden’s Anders Kallur. “I think what happened when they lost their confidence on the power

play against Canada (in an exhibition game) because the penalty killing with Butch Goring and Bob Gainey was so good, and it took a while for them to get it back. But if you think today was bad, you should see them

go 5-on-4 on the big ice surface in Europe. There, it’s just incredible.” Following the game, Sweden’s Anders Kallur, Tomas Jonsson and Borje Salming chased after American

referee Bob Henry, upset about the game’s officiating. Sweden captain Anders Hedberg moved his teammates away from the ref before things got too heated.

“It wasn’t a case of us playing bad,” said Wayne Gretzky, who was held pointless. “They got an early jump and we just couldn’t get going.”

Swedish referee Dag Olsson gave Canada a two-minute, 5-on-3 in the third period. Canada did not get a shot on goal…then took a penalty with nine seconds left in the two-man advantage.

This result leaves Canada and the Soviet Union tied for first in the standings with 2-0-1 records. Czechoslovakia is third with a 1-0-2 mark.

Wayne Gretzky CAN was also injured on a separate play as he was slashed on the left elbow by D Lars Lindgren SWE. Following the slash, Gretzky could not take face-offs.

Canadian back-up netminder Billy Smith broke a finger in practice two days ago, so Don Edwards will now serve as Mike Liut’s back-up

we did in the first game, but for some reason we didn’t. I don’t know why; the motivation didn’t seem to be there.”

Sergei Shepelev URS received the penalty shot after D Arnold Kadlec TCH fell on the puck in the goal crease. It was the first penalty shot in Canada Cup history, dating back to 1976.

Canada defeated Soviet Union 7-3 in the round-robin portion of the tournament D Denis Potvin CAN said, “They got some big saves from their goalie; we didn’t.”

“We didn’t expect to win and certainly by not such a score,” said Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov. “Maybe the two earlier games against us (Canada won both, 3-2, in an exhibition, 7-3, last Wednesday in the round-

robin) made the Canadian team think we were weak.” “It wasn’t a seven-goal game but we have no excuses,” said Canada’s coach Scotty Bowman. “The real

scoring chances were very even, maybe 14-12 for them but we saw what a really strong goalie can do.” “We were able to get on them in their end in the two earlier games but, this time, their defence had

adjusted,” Canadian defenceman and co-captain (with D Denis Potvin) Larry Robinson said. “They were back for the puck and had it on the move before our forecheckers could get to it.”

“Now, we’re probably going to hear about this for four years,” said Wayne Gretzky, held pointless for only the second time in the tournament (v. Czechoslovakia).

Following the game, as has been well chronicled, the Soviets tried to spirit the Canada Cup back to the USSR. They were halted by security people at the airport. Tournament director Alan Eagleson insisted that

the Cup stay in Canada. The Soviets claimed that Eagleson's decision was made "in violation of the traditions existing at international competitions".

In their workout on the day before the game, the Soviets devoted time to their “Kid Defence,” an approach to halting Wayne Gretzky, especially in reducing his effectiveness when he sets up behind the

net.
