Welcome to the twelfth BillinghamInternatio nal fi:l'klore Festival.

Each year as we look forward toanother Festival, we are forced also tolook back with considerable pride at ourachievement over the years. The Festivalstarted in 1965 as a result of the popularityof the Saturday afternoon entertainmentprovided in the Town Centre by theBillingham Council. Since then, morethan 140 folklore groups have taken part.They have come to Billingham fromalmost every country in Europe, from theUSA, the USSR, Israel, Turkey, The Congo,Japan, Tunisia, Bolivia, Puerto Rico,Canada and Paraguay. More than 4000dancers and singers have performed here

- and all of them from among the bestamateur groups and performers of thefolklore world. And now, for this oneweek in every year, Billingham becomesthe centre of that world.

The Festival has grown enormously instature during its twelve years existenceand now enjoys a reputation whichstretches far beyond Billingham. It has

Each year, we have endeavoured tointroduce at least one group from acountry which has not previously beenrepresented at the Festival. This year weare especially pleased to have groups fromno less than four new countries - Cuba,Finland, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago.We look forward with interest andexcitement to this first presentation oftheir folk song and dance in Billingham.To them, and to the other groups, I extenda very warm Billingham welcome.

In presenting the programme, theprincipal aim of the Festival Committeeis to provide high quality entertainmentin an atmosphere of joy and friendship.But it is also our earnest hope that,through an appreciation of folk culture,we will achieve greater internationalunderstanding and that from thisgreater unflerstanding, strong bonds offellowship will develop.

from all corners of the globe. Themagnificent and colourful spectacle hasreached millions of people through themedium of television. Yet the reallyexciting thing is that the Festival hasremained essentially a community event.Without the dedicated effort of theseveral hundred voluntary helpers whowork tirelessly behind the scenes, theFestival could never succeed.

This is an exhibition of local andforeign folk art and crafts.

_ E.u.! folklore group coming to theFestival is invited to bring one*artistwho will be able to display workcharacteristic of the group's countryor region. These artists, together wiihl-ocal artists, prepare the exhibition, a

ng the week, work in the exhibithall demonstrating their craft.

Last year the exhibition was heldfor the first time and was very popular.More than 1400 people visitedit aurithe week and saw a number of crafts-meT.a.t work together with displays oftraditional craft work and exhibitionso[ nho,tgsranhs and paintings depictinglrre rn Hungary.

The exhibition is held in the Forumadmission is free,

Cluhis open to all persons

over the age of 18 years. The club willbe situated in the Billingham ArmsHotel and will be open from Friday,August 13th - August 21st from9.00 p.m. - 2.00 a.m. Members willdance to the music of "The CaribbeanSteel Band". Cabaret items will be givenby Festival participants. This centre isespecially designed to give the publican opportunity to meet the festivalperformers who will all be ClubMembers.

The Union of Cuban Folklore wasformed after 1959 to ihcorporate allaspects of traditional Cuban Culture. Theorganisation is sponsored by the govern-ment which is sending to us the NationalEnsemble to perform on our stages thewide variety of folk dances and songswhich make up Cuba's heritage.

The Cubans are descended fromAfrican slaves and the Spaniards whoconquered the island. The varyingtraditions of the different ethnic Sroupstogether with the varying national aindgeographical conditions of Cuba haveinfluenced its cultural development.

Much of the rhythm of the music hasits root in African tradition. The Spaniardshave added their particular movementsand names to dances. Every region ofSoain has contributed to Cuban Folkloreu-ild -urry of the performances havereligious significance.

The different Ethnic groups of AfricanSlaves performed their varying dances as

an expiession of the conditions of theirlife as slaves.

From these varying influences hasemerged a Folklore truly reflective ofCuban life.

There are four main groups of items:I The Congolean Cycle - Dances and

songs performed during the pre-slaveryepoch,

2 Yoruba-Lyesa - Dances and songswhich have their roots in the mythologyand legends of Cuban deities.

3 Abakua Cycle - There was once asecret societY "Abakua" in Cuba.

These songs and dances were Part ofthe ritual of its members.

4 Rumbas y Comparsas - This sectiondepicts everyday life using various

-"Congas" and Rumbas; the cries ofstreet vendors and the Comparsa whichis Cuba's national dance. In this itemthe participants meander through thestreets greeting joyfully theinhabitants.The group gives the whole of the

second half of the programme in theForum Theatre on Monday evening,

This ensemble comes to us throughSirkka Viitanen who is Cultural Seciltarvof Suomen Nuorison Liitto, Finland'smajor youth organisation. Mrs. Viitanenis the Finnish representative at C.I.O.F.F.and was at Billingham in 1974. She is anexperienced folk dancer and has arrangedsome of the group's items for this festi"val.

The ensemble has three sections-aChoir, a Folk Band and a Dance Group.Some of their items consist of all threigroups performing together, not unlikethe Polish ensemb--les nOpole" and"Krako_viacy" who havebeen so popularat this festival.

- - Their repertoire includes, polkas,Mazurkas, Waltzes and a wide variefy offolk songs and music from every region ofthe. country. They will play Weddirig Musicand sing songs of the sea, love, work-andplay.

Clechoslovakia The hlk Ensemble'Danai' - Straznice

This ensemble comes to us through theHouse of Culture in Prague and isby the institute of folklore in Straznice.This town is famous in folklore circles as

it is the centre, each year, for Czecho-slovakia's most important internationalfestival of folk song, music and dance.

The oldest part of the "Danaj"ensemble is'Slavek Volavy's' DulcimerBand founded in 1943 and famousthroughout the country. Dr. Volavy, theensemble's director holds the titleMerited Artist.

The dance group was established in1959 and takes its name "Danaj" fromone of the traditional dances of Straznice.

The ensemble also has a singing group.The members are workers from theAgricultural Co-operatives, teachers andstudents.

"Danaj" has won many awards infestivals in their own country and havetravelled to perform in the U.S.S.R.,Belgium, Poland, France, Austria, Italy,Greece, Egypt, Syria, Romania andHungary.

This group needs little introduction tothe regular supporter of the BillinghamFestival, After a brilliant first appearancein 1966 the ensemble made further visitsto us in 1968, 1970, and 1973.

The group goes from strength tostrength and made a very successful tourin the United States of America andMexico in the autumn of 1975.

In overall charge on this occasion, willbe Jonathan Gabay, who was previouslychoreographer and dance director. He hastaken over from Mr. Zeev Sternberg whoseprofessional commitments now pr€venthim from supervising the group's activities.We should like to place on record ourappreciation of the great contribution toIsraeli folklore and this festival, whichMr. Sternberg has made.

Israeli dances are based on the old andnew traditions of their Holv Land. Somehave their origins in the Bible; othersshow aspects of life in the Kibbutz, Therewill be dances depicting rural customs andthe traditions of the different groups whohave come from a variety of countiies toform the new Israeli nation,

Singing with the ensemble is EffieNetzer whose'singalong' sessions and*S91g of Peace" proved so popular inr97 3.

The costumes are colourful, attractiveand in many instances especially designedfor a particular dance, Music will be -provided by drum, clarinet, trumpet, fluteand guitar.

Israeli folklore enthusiasts should notethat the group gives the whole of thesqcond part of the programme in theCollege Theatre on Wednesday night.

This is the first time that this ensembleor any group from Mexico has come tothe Billingham Festival. If there is some-thing familiar about them do not besurprised. Cast your mind back to theOpening Ceremony of the Olympic Gamesin 1968. In the parade whirling theirsombreros was this group. Preceding theathletes with a spectacular dance routinethey made a profound impression on allthose present and the vast Televisionaudience.

ln 1972 they were invited to Munichand appeared at the International Folk-Iore Festival organised in conjunctionwith the Games of the 20th Olympiad.

Once again we are in an Olympic Yearand this time our Mexican friends missthe Games but come to Billingham. I amsure the welcome they will receive herewill equal the response they drew fromtheir audiences in 1968 and,l972.

The group was founded at GuadalajaraUniversity in 1960 and is made up ofstudents. It prides itself on its very highstandards and it has made tours abroadbearing the title of the National FolkBallet Company of Mexico.

Their dance repertoire includes itemsfrom all parts of their country. Guadala-jara is the capital city of the State ofJaliseo and we shall see four dances fromthis region. There will be many otherinteresting items including the RitualDance of the Salt based on PrehispanicMexican themes, El Caiman (The Alligator)EI Torito (The Little Bull), El Caballito(The Little Horse) and dances from theStates of Oaxaca ar;.d,Zacatecas.

This group first came here in 1967 andre-appeared in 1969. Many festivalsupporters will remember the Colour Filmmade in the latter year by David Bean andthe B.B.C. This featured prominently thefamous "Sopsko Oro" - the Horsemansdance from Southern Serbia, performedTine Rozanc, The personnel of folk dancegroups changes as quickly as that of soccerteams but we are told that at least two ofthe 1969 "Sopsko" team will be dancingagain this year.

This ensemble was formed in 1949 andcalled after a national hero - "TineRozanc" who was killed in the SecondWorld War. It is sponsored by theTransport Workers Union and most ofits members are railway workers andtheir children.

Yugoslavia is made up of severaldifferent nations each with its ownlanguage, traditional songs, dances andcostumes. "Tine Rozanc" come from thenorthern province of Slovenia, but theirrepertoire contains items from every pa.rtof the country. They have an outstandingTamburitza Orchestra and their Mace-donian Suite of Dances is a colourfulexciting item.

The ensemble will be under thedirection of Dusan Schuster who dancedhere in 1967 and was artistic Director in1969. They will come to us from Haifa,Israel where they will have beenperforming at that country's SecondInternational Festival of Folklore.

BrighamYoung University has an internationalreputation and the Physical EducationFaculty is reknowned for its standardsand its outstanding students - JohnnyMiller, the famous golfer, is but one ofthe brilliant products of recent years,

The Dance Dept. covers the wholerange of traditional national dance,modern movement etc. Each year a groupof students from the depa.rtment comesto Europe to take part in some of themore important folklore Festivals. Theyperform under the direction of Mary Bee

Jensen, Professor of Folk Dance at theUniversity who chooses her team fromabout 500 who attend the folk danceclasses.

Their programme consists of a widevariety of items from dances onceassociates with the early settlers in NewEngland to the Charleston, Jitterbug andCake Walk of the 20th Century. Theyaim to present the folk traditions of thewhole of their country and include intheir repertoire the sensational IndianEagle and Hoop Dances. The Hoop Danceoriginated among the Indians of theNorth West and has since spread untilalmost every tribe has a hoop dancer.The dance consists of winding ones bodythrough large hoops while keeping stepto the drum. By the time the dancefinishes, Charles lllsey, this group's hoopdancer, is using 36 hoops, almost threetirnes the number used by most hoopdancers.

The excitement of the dancers isheightened by the dazzting rhythms of thegroup's own band "Smokin Wood".

The whole programme is colourful,extremely well arranged and presentedwith a stimulating zest by a mosttalented group of young people led by adynamic director who must be numberedamongst the most outstanding teachersof dance in the world.

1976 is the 200th Anniversary of theUnited States Declaration of Independ-ance. In recognition of this occasion, wegive the American Folk Dancers thehonour of opening the Festival's theatreprogramme at the Forum on SaturdaY,August 14th. They also present the wholeof the second part of the programme atthe College Theatre on Tuesday evening.

The most dynamic of all the dancesare however those which have beeninfluenced by Africa like the Bongo andShango. These are done to the puisating

beat of the African drums and percussioninstruments.

In addition to the dancers there is aFolk Choir, Folk Drummers and anoutstanding Steel Band.

The most spectacular item to bepresented will be a stage version ofTrinidad's annual carnival which promisesto bean elaborate pageant of colourful,magnrltcent costume, song and dance.

In its whole history this ensemble hashad many outstanding successes. In thesummer of lg72 they presented the FolkBallet "Ambakaila" at the Festival Hallin London. Last year they were in they.S.{. to-take part in the ThanksgivingDay Parade on Broadway. They hive -appeared in New York, Washington andmany of the famous concert halls in

America. Before coming to Billinghamthey are doing a two month tourlnf-urope.

Aurbey Adams promises that hiscompany will bring to our Festival therya1mth, colour and sunshine of tropicalTrinidad and Tobago. We are sure ti.ratthrs new country and for us, this differenttype of folklore, will receive the usualenthusiastic Billingham welcome.

England 'The Yetties'Fifty Stone of loveliness

The Yetties are one of England's mostpopular folk groups. They take their namefrom the Dorset village of Yetminsterwhich is their home and their love ofmusic of the West Country coupled withtheir boisterous sense of humour winsthem friends wherever they go. Theirconcerts include folk, music hall and pubsongs, together with some dancing andthe playing of unusual musical instruments.

The press have said of the Yetties:"They put ona dazzlirrg two and a half

hour show which sent the delightedaudience home as tipsy as if they'd spentthe evening supping jugs of West CountryCider:'.

"The Yetties have a tremendous rapportwith their audiences and present animmensely popular programme".

Bob Common has been variouslYdescribed as "Falstaff and Father Christ-mas rolled into one", "the folk world'sjester in chief" and "an amiable water-butt".

Bonny Sartin is the grouP's leadvocalist with "one of the best and mostunder-rated singing voices around", "alovely deep baritone which was puredelight".

Mac MacCulloch features as guitarist,vocalist and animal impressionist.

Peter Shutler is a vocalist andinstrumentalist, playin g accordeon,concertina, whistle and bowed psalterywhich produces a unique, eerie sound.

The Yetties are making their 4thappearance at the Billingham Festivaland will be welcomed back by the largebody of support they have built up inthis area through their appearances hereand in the Folk Clubs of the District.

A voice like a coke-crusher spiced witha sharp Northern wit, aided and abettedby nimble guitar fingers and a large bassconcertina sounding like a puncturedwhale, all combine to give the ratherunique sound of Bernard Wrigley.

Best known on the national folk clubscene, his performances can range fromtraditional material; via guitar instrument-als of Morris Tunes and Cole Porterstandards; gems such as 'Nelly theElephant', 'September in the Rain'witha faltering falsetto; to material written byhimself, be it narrative or just rather silly,

If you saw a lout in Arthur Hopcraft'sB.B.C.2 play "Said the Preacher", anutter in Alan Bennett's "Day Out"(8.8.C.2), a comedian in "CoronationStreet", a singing gorilla in "Village Hall"(Granada), a turkey thief in Ian Taylor's"Festive Poacher" (B.8.C.2), then youhave seen Wrigley as an actor.

This side began with the OctagonTheatre, Bolton, when asked to writesongs and perform in local history docu-mentaries:'Crompton Mule','BoltonMassacre' and'Bolton Wanderers'. Itdeveloped via the 'Ken Campbell Road-show', a travelling troupe which based itstnaterial on modern folk tales, and theresult can be seen in the numerable TVappearances he has made, and the twoLPs he has released:

England Hendon Banks

Hendon Banks are the resident groupat the Trimdon Folk Club in CountvDurham, The group members areJez Low,Ged Fowley, Paul and Christine Stockton.

Paul and Christine have been singing infolk clubs for a number of years, firstlyin their native Cheshire and in the NorthEast since 197 O- Jez and Ged have beenplaying in the North East clubs as a duoand with various groups over the last twoyears.

They play mainly traditional musicusing a variety of instruments; i;e, guitars,dulcimers, banjo, mandolin, Englishconcertina, bodhran, whistle and a homemade Nordic lyre. Paul and Christine havealways concentrated on harmony singingwhileJez and Ged have been keeninstrum entalists.

As Hendon Banks, they have unitedall this talent to blend their sounds to suitthe material. They have recnntly appearedon an LP featuring the Trimdon Club'ssingers and musicians and have foundgreat success at local festivals culminatingin winning the group competition at theSouth Tyneside Festival and appearing atthe Durham Folk Festival.

"Hendon Banks" have a sensitiveapproach to the songs, arranging andadapting material in their style, but neverdestroying the songs themselves.

In this day of experimentation withheavy, electric, backing to traditional folksongs, it is refreshing to find a group ofpeople independently minded ind -

England Billingham Silver Band

The Billingham Silver Band came intobeing in 1966, after being the Malleable(Norton) Band for 20 years.

The present conductor is 'young'Vaughan Evans, who since he took overthe baton in 1973, leaves no stoneunturned to improve the standard of theBand in every way. The Band has led the ,Billingham Festival Opening Parade and hasplayed each country's National Anthemas they are introduced to the public sincethe first event in 1965. All these NationalAnthems need a great deal of arranging.This is the work of 7O year old BillCharlton, who to date has produced 25Band parts with 40 Anthems in each viz:1000 Anthems with approx. 50,000 notes,all hand written.

The Band will lead the Opening Paradeand play the National Anthems onSaturday, August 14th. They will alsotake part in the Torchlight Processionon Saturday, August 21st.

There will really be two groups fromthis branch of the Society appearing atBillingham. The Country Dancers and theStockton Morris Men. Many of the latterhave appeared at every Biltingham Festivalsince 1965 and will be sure of anotherwarm welcome particularly when theyperform their gymnastic "Rapper Dance".

The Committee wishes to record itsappreciation of the support given by themembers of this Branch of the Society tothe Festival throughout the years. Alreadyin 1976, by performing at the FestivalWorkers Social Evening and the PressConference, they have made a substantialcontribution to the success of this year'sevent,

Festival is the Ceili held on the OpeningSaturday night in the College Theatre. Itis attended by a large number of folkdance enthusiasts from a wide area.

It has become traditional that the dancemusic be provided by the Danelaw CountryDance Band from Alnwick, Northumber-land, under the direction of its talentedyoung leader Robert Whitehead. The"Danelaw" play throughout the year atfolk dances from Scotland to the Midlands.The wide area they cover indicates theirwide popularity. The secret of their successis the-wide repertoire of tunes they haveto offer and,perfect timing - be ii forScottish, English or Irish dancing.

DURHAM DISTRICT BRANCH OF THEENGLISH FOLK DANCE ANDSONG SOCIETY

This group will be making its firstappearance at the festival and willrepresent England in the Opening Paradeand Ceremony on Saturday, August 14th.Approximately 40 members will presentmassed country dancing at the OpeningConcert.

Organising the performance will beMalcolm Doughty, Chairman of theBranch and a member of the ExecutiveCommittee of the English Folk Danceand Song Society. Mr. Doughty is a wellknown dancer, M.C. and Caller at Ceilis.He is no stranger to Billingham where heperformed with the Derwent ValleyDance Group some years ago. He also has

a wide experience of international festivalsand has taken English groups to manyfolklore Festivals in other Countries.

_ The group will also participate in theCeili at the College Theatre on Saturday,August l4th when two of their memberswill give individual items.

Tom Prince is one of the greatestexponents of the traditional Englishconcertina. He is an outstanding folkmusician. His band will provide the musicfor the Durham District'and Tom willplay on his own at the Ceili on Saturdaynight.

Dave Oliver: comes from Sunderlandand has been associated with DurhamDistrict for a number of years. He is adancer and musician. He will play withTom Prince in the band providing'Durham's'music. At the Ceili he willsing to his own accompaniment,traditional folk songs of the North-East.

The Fairey Band was formed in 1937at the Fairey Aviation Works, HeatonChapel, Stockport, and quickly achievedChampionship status by winning theBelle Vue Contest inJuly 1938.

At the Annual British Open Champion-ship which is held at Belle Vue, Manchester"Faireys" have been Champions ontwelve occasions, After completing a hat-trick of wins in 1 961-2-3, thi band weredebarred from competing in 1964 andonly appeared as a guest band, returningas a competitor in 1965 when they wereawarded first prize.

_ In L945, The National ChampionshipFestival was revived at the Royal AlberiH:lll, London. "Faireys" were immediatelysuccessful, being winners in that year and'again in 19524-O and 65.

The Band have competed twice at anInternational Competition in Holland in1948 and 1949 and were awarded firstprize on both occasions.

Of these contesting achievements it isnotable that, in addition to the hat-trickat the British Open Championship,"Faireys" have been double Champions,i.e. British Open and National, on threeoccasions, 1945,1956 and 1965.

In 1973 the Band became Champion ofChampions in the European Champion-ship held at the Albert Hall in Londonand won B.B,C. Televisions ChampionBrass Competition in May this year.

As a concert band, in addition toengagements throughout the British Isles,tours of Germany, Holland and Belgiumhave been undertaken, and in 1961 theband appeared at the Canadian NationalExhibition in Toronto, Canada.

T.V. appearances, sound broadcastsand commercial recordings have been animportant part of the band's activities.Sound broadcasts on the B.B.C. Homeand Overseas wavelengths number morethan 400 and the name of Fairey appearson many recording discs.

The Band will play in the Town Centreon Saturday, August 2Lst at 8.15 p.m.
