Beat down

• Imre Nagy reports that Soviet forces had entered Hungary from the east and was moving towards Budapest.

• Many of the soldiers believed they were being sent to Berlin to fight German fascists.

• At 5:20 a.m. on November 4, Imre Nagy broadcasted his final plea to the nation and the world for help.

• At 8 p.m. there was no organised defense any more because the radio station was captured and many defenders fell back to fortified positions.

• It was often impossible for Soviet troops to differentiate military from civilian targets so the tanks are only on the main roads and there they shoot buildings in fire

• Hungarian resistance was strongest in the industrial areas of Budapest which were heavily targeted by Soviet artillery and air strikes

• The last pocket of resistance called for ceasefire on 10 November. Over 2,500 Hungarian rebels and 722 Soviet troops were killed and thousands more were wounded.

The situation in the Soviet

• Stalin died in 1953.

• 3 groups are fighting for the power (the Army, the Party and the KGB.

• Khrushchev won the powerfight and he became the leader of the Soviet-Union in 1956.

• Khrushchev wanted a more human Communism.

The situation in the world

• The president of Egypt, Nasser, nationalised the Suez Canal.

• France and the United Kingdom invaded Egypt.• The Soviet-Union warned America not to

interfere in there part of the world (the East)• The Soviet-Union and America had a tacitly

agreement that split the world in two parts: The East (SU) and the West (USA).

The situation in Hungary

• The Hungarian came in insurrection against Communism.

• America (the West) encouraged this insurrection.

• The Hungarian called for aid at the West but the West did not help because of the tacitly agreement. Also they were afraid to get in a serious conflict with the Soviet-Union.

• Later on the West took care of the many refugees from Hungary. (A house, a job)
