SILHOUETTES IN THE 1950’SThe silhouettes created by the clothes worn in the

1950’s were nipped in at the waist with full skirts. This made the look of big hips and a big bum. They had mostly short sleeves and tight tops with broadened shoulders.

FASHION INFLUENCES IN THE 1950’SFashion is often influenced by famous people

around at the time, people trying to be like them because they are glamorous. Joan Collins was an actress around at this time and many women looked up to her they also looked up to Marilyn Monroe. The McQuire sisters were a girl band and Doris Day was a singer and actress. More actresses like Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood and Elizabeth Taylor were always on the TV so influenced the public to be like them.

FASHION DESIGNERS IN THE 1950’SSome of the greatest fashion designers were around in

the 1950’s one example is Christian Dior who’s name you still see around today. She created the ‘new look’ and designed her clothes in the hour glass figure with the small waist and full skirts. Jacques Faith was another fashion designer at this time she went for the younger more daring look with scooped neck lines. Pierre Balmain wasn’t as famous as Dior and Faith but his fashion was a lot like Diors. Coco Chanel is another name we still hear today, in the 50’s she designed like Dior as well but put her own spin on things.
