DISTINGUISHED FLYING CEOSS. Act. Wing Cdr. E. S.  BARNES,  R .A.F.V.R ., No. 107 Squadron.—This officer has performed splendid work whilst comm anding the squadro n. Attack s en enemy shipping in the Benghazi and Tripoli areas have been attended with magnificent results and much of the success obtained can be attri buted to this officer's skill and courage. Wing Cdr. Barnes has also led attacks on road tiansports and various targets in Sicily and Italy wher eby conside rab le dam age has been inflicted on the enemy. His leadership and personal ex ample, especially during a difficult phase of opera tions, has had a most beneficial effect on the morale of his flying crews. Win g Cdr . Bar nes has carried out 35 operational missions. Act. Fit. Lt. E. G.  EDMUNDS,  NO. 18 Squadron. —In November. 1941, Fit. Lt. Edm unds and Sgt. Hedin were the pilot and navigator respectively of an aircraf t which carried out an attac k on ship ping east of Trip oli. In spite of extremely unfavourable flying conditions, Fit. L t. Edmunds persisted in his mission and, ably assisted by Sgt, Hed in, who skilfully naviga ted the ai rcr aft over 200 miles of the sea to the target, area, finally »Hanked and  seated  hits on a large vessel and an escorting destroyer. Two days later Fit. Lt. Edmunds, with Sgt. He din as navi gator , l ed a low-flying attac k on shipp ing in Navar ino Bay. In spite of intense fire from the shore, several hits were scored on a 6,000-ton tank er which was set on fire. The skill and determination shown by Fit. Lt. Edm onds, combined with the skilful and accur ate navigation displayed by Sgt. Hedin. were largely responsible for the success achieved. Lt. D. H. HlLLHOUSE, S.A.A.F., No. 12 Squad ron.— This officer h as particip ated in active op era tions in East Africa and the Western Desert since Jun e. 1940. He has taken par t in 77 sorties, on 56 of which he has acted as air gunner and the remainder as bomb aimer, ni s ability to bomb his target accurately has been excep tional, and has contributed materially to the successes achieved by his un it. Lt. Hillhousc has shown great courage. P/O.  L- A. V 'A UG H A N, R.A.F.V.R., No. 148 Sqnadron.—This officer air-gunner has participated in 54 raids, including 28 against targets in G er many and German occupied territory. Through out, he has displayed the utmost keeness fo r for danger, has set a splendid example to all. On one occasion during a mine-laying mission. his aircraft was subjected to fire, at close range, £rom two antiaircraft  gun3.  By silencing these uns P /O . Vaughan p erformed very valuable work jd er , he carries out a great deal of the instruc tion of new crews, a work in which he has shown ability. I/O. M. It is composed almt-.W% exclusively of Airgraph miniature films which means a saving of over 98 per cen%r in weight as against ordinary mail. for several weeks. In a series of p lanne d m ach ine gun attacks on ground targets,* P /O . Wareham displayed exem p lary coolness and initiativ e. He has destroyed at least three enemy aircr aft off the Libyan coast. F C  ASTLEV,  No. 615 Squadron.—T his airm an has carr ied out a large numbe r of oper a tional sorties, involving interception and convoy p atrols. He has also p articip ated in numer ous highly successful attacks on enemy shipping, du rin g which several enemy ship s were set on fire and others damaged, and attacks on ground targets in Norther n Franc e. As a section leader for the part in the trainin g of n ew pilots, a task in which he has sbown great keenness and devotion to duty. Sgt. R B.  BIRTLES,  R .A F.V.R ., No, 118 Squadron.—This airman has particip ated in a large num ber of sweeps and rec onna issances ; he has also taken p art in three attacks on enemy ship ping and four on land targets when tiains, fac tories and other ob jective imvg bean attacked. l i November , 194 1. du rin g a soitie, Sgt. B iHles need a light anti-aircra ft gun which was firing on his section leader. Some days later he p artici pated in an attack on a rail way station in Fra nce. On the return journey one of his fellow-pilots was shot down into the sea. Sgt. Bir tles, with great initiative, flew down to almost sea level, and while op eratin g his aircraft controls with the righ t hand only, de tached his own dinghy and so skilfully manoeuvr ed his aircraft that he succeeded in dropping the ding hy with in a few jfeet of his comrade, who was then Bwimm ing in th e sea. Sgt, Birtles then flew on to his base, which he r eached with very little petrol in the tanks. Sgt. R. C.  FINN,  RA.F.V.R, No .  615 Squadron.—This ai r man has participated in a large num ber of op erationa l sorties, consisting of interception and convoy pa trols In addition, on enemy shipp ing and ground targets in Norther n France In the course of these attacks six ships, of various types, have been destr oye d, two set on fire, and five damaged, whilst on land a transform er station and a factory were badly damaged. G Louis, NO 615 Squadron—This airm an has p articip ated in over 100 opera tional sor ties, including ch annel sweeps, convoy, and night patro ls. Sgt. L o u is has taken part in most of his unit's highly successful attacks on enemy ship p ing, wher ein six ships of varions typ es and sizes have been destroved and others damage d. He has destroyed one Jun ker s 88 and pr obably a .Messerschmitt 109F. Throughout he has display ed gr eat keenness and dev otion lo duty. Act. Fit. Sgt.  W.  H .  ROBINSON,  NO. 7 Squadron. —In Novem ber, 19 41, this airm an was the f l i gh t engineer of an aircraft which par ticipated in a daylight attack on shipp ing off Borkum. The aircraft was subjected to intense and accur ate anti-aircraft fire, and sustained damage to the starboard outer engine oil system. Owing to the p resence of eight enemy f ig h te r s, Fit. Sgt. Robinson manned his tur re t but f ul ly realising the danger of the engine seizing, in structed another member of the crew to give him a comm entary or, thf behaviour of the damaged engine. Skilfully dividin g his att tn lig g betwem hi« gin ner y and engineering duties. Fit. Sgt. R obinson was able to keep the damage d engjr going until the engagement, was broken oil. Dur ing thr battle he shot down one  o j enemy airc raft in f la m e s. After war ds, whe. 'i| port outboard engine also became unservici Fit. Sgt. Robinson carefully calculated the amount of fuel necessary to reach base, jettisoned as much as possible of the remainder, and so made it possible to retu rn safely on two engines. This airman has participated in many successful opera tions, on one of which, although wounded, be carr ied out his duties fully and, until the air ciaft was safely landed, he did not indicate tha t he had been wounded in the groin. Sgt. P. C.  WHITWELL,  NO . 7 Squadron.— This airm an was the rear g unner of an aircraft which carried ou t a daylight attack on shipp ing o il Bor kum . Dur ing the op era tion the aircr aft v>»s attac ked by a force of eigh t M essersch mitt I09i Displaying great coolness and accuracy of Bra, Sergeant W hitwell warded off the first four attack s and. in the next one, seriously damaged one ol the atta cke rs , which was observed to dive steep away with the engine emitting black smoke. Thr ee further attacks were made by the enemy aircr aft, and . in the last one, Sgt. Whitw ell scored a fur ther success Follow ing a well aime d irarcl bv him, one of the enemy aircraft turned ovei and dived ver tically. On ano ther occasion, when his aircraft was attack ed by a Mc-sserschmit 110, Sgt. Whitweil withheld his fire until the attacker had closed to a range of 50 yards, and then shot it down in flames Thi s air ma n has displayed great ability, tenacity and courage. Sgt. H. R LEV EN, Sgt. M. J. NOLA N, Sgt. C A. EVANS,  all of No. 107 Squadron.—As pilot, air observer and wireless operator-air gunn er re-pec- tively f  Sgts. Leven, Nolan and Evans have partici pated in numerous sorties in which enemy shipp ing has been attacked. Undismayed by the heavy defensive fire from a rm ed escor t ships, these air men have shown great courage and deter mir iatic*' to comp lete their allotte d task. Sgts. Leven an< / Nolan have completed 34, and Sgt. Evans 27 oper- - tional missions.
