The all too prevalent hostilitybetween Israel’s Jews and their fellow Arabcitizens offers little comfort to those whoseek to pacify and not provoke. AnOrthodox Jew is attacked near theDamascus Gate in a wanton act of vio-lence. The price tag vandals respond byspray painting the slogan “Kahane wasright” on vehicles and buildings in Araband mixed neigbourhoods. An Arab cabdriver is beaten by two knife wieldingJewish punks and an Arab woman ispunched while riding on the JerusalemLight Railway. Arab politicians talk of sep-aration, not integration. And Jewishracists threaten to torch the home of alandlord if she rents an apartment toIsraeli Arabs.

Yet while the purveyors of hateon both sides receive most of the publici-ty, there may, in fact, be room for cau-tious optimism. Sit in a restaurant in theMamilla Mall and observe Jewish andArab young women shopping, sometimestogether, in the same high end stores.Ride the Light Railway and, despite theoccasional incident, see Jews and Arabssharing seats without giving it a secondthought. Go to the Israel Tennis Centreand watch Jews and Arabs learning thesport together. Drop in to the Leir PeacePre-School at the Jerusalem YMCA andwatch as Jewish and Arab pre-schoolersplay with one another, and begin to learnabout one another, under the watchful

eye of Jewish and Arab teachers. Andthen take a bus or taxi to Neve Shalom -Wahat al-Salam and observe how a com-munity of Jews and Arabs, though smallin number, offers hope that peaceful co-existence between Jew and Arab may notbe a pipedream.

Neve Shalom - Wahat al-Salam isabout half way between Jerusalem and TelAviv. It was founded in the early 1970s andtoday has 60 families, split evenly betweenArab and Jew. The ultimate goal is 140 fam-ilies living in a community based on mutualrespect. The educational system, in additionto the primary and secondary schools, alsoincludes the School for Peace, established in1979. Some 60,000 Jews and Arabs fromacross the country have participated in theSFP programs. They do not, it must beacknowledged, all speak with one voice. Butby sharing the same classroom, they come tounderstand the importance of uniting againstthose who would poison the spirit of tolerance.

Some would argue that the expec-tations of the men and women of NeveShalom - Wahat al-Salam, notwithstandingtheir Nobel Peace Prize nominations, are farbeyond their reach. A day spent meetingthe community’s committed residentsjust might convince the observer thatthough the tread will surely be slow. theymay be justified in not despairing of hope.It would surely be in Israel’s best interestsif this were a case in which the race wasnot to the swift or the battle to the strong.

It isnot a coincidence thatRabbi Margolin is thehead of the EuropeanJewish Association.

Margolin then accusedSchudrich of “torpedoing”the meeting. His angerbecame even more pro-nounced when the Polishparliament voted 222-178to uphold the ban. Hecalled Schudrich “incom-petent” and demanded hisresignation. Schudrich, hesaid, acts “irresponsibly,as though Poland is hisown fiefdom, while ignor-ing the need for coordinat-ed action on an issuewhich affects all ofEuropean Jewry andbeyond”.

And so the internalstruggle continues as thetwo groups vie with oneanother for a leadershiprole. The European JewishAssociation has made lifemore difficult for Schudrichby hiring a Polish national-ist lawyer to challenge theshechita ban. The one timehead of the disbandedLeague of Polish families, afar right movement oftenaccused of anti-Semitism,was hired “because of hisprofessional skills and con-nections in the Polish politi-cal scene.

JERUSALEM’S LIGHT RAILWAY HAS NOW BEEN UP AND RUNNING FOR TWO YEARS. TRAVELfrom Pisgat Ze’ev to Mount Herzel has been cut from 90 minutes when the trains started runningto 49 minutes. But anyone who has used the service is aware that problems still need to be addressed. The rail was designed initially to carry some 50,000 people but is now carrying 100,000 daily. The tworail cars per train is simply insufficient. Purchasing tickets can also be frustrating. Human gridlock atstations is all too common as impatient Israelis try to get on and off at the same time.

Rabbi Schudrich, aU.S. born rabbi who haslived in Poland since 1992,and was named chief rabbiin 2004, counters by sayingthat “we cannot risk thatour efforts will be hinderedby the actions of people whowill not bear the conse-quences of their interfer-ence” . “The European

The fact thatChabad operates only twocenters in Poland, when ithas six in Belarus andmore than 30 each inRussia and Ukraine, maybe at the root of the squab-ble. Schudrich is acutelyaware of the fact thatChabad wants to expandits reach in Poland, withperhaps an eye on layingclaim to chief rabbi.

WHAT THE BOYCOTT PROPONENTS FAILto mention is that boycotting such Israelicompanies as SodaStream would cost thePalestinians dearly. Almost half of the 1300workers at the above plant at MishorAdumim are Palestinians. They earn threetimes as much as Palestinians do workingfor Palestinian companies in the West Bank.“Product labelling” which the EU and theAnglican/Lutheran hierarchy advocate willonly mean that relatively highly paidPalestinian workers will lose their jobs.Pictured above a taxi drops off a Palestinianworker at the SodaStream plant.

It takes a pretty fer-tile imagination to correlatea story about alleged politi-cal bias at the IRS and sex-ual abuse in the U.S. mili-tary to the Middle East con-flict. Leave it to CBCreporter Neil Macdonald, aself-appointed pontificatorperched from Washington,to twist unrelated worldaffairs stories into criti-cisms of Israel.

In an analysis piecepublished on the CBC’swebsite on June 6,Macdonald included the fol-lowing irrelevant smearagainst Israel and Canadiansupport for the Jewish state:

In the United States, you need a passport to trav-el abroad, and a drivers’license to cash a check. InIsrael, you need an ID cardjust to cross the street.

“The law is thateveryone must have an IDcard,” Jerusalem policespokesman MickyRosenfeld told The MediaLine. “Incidents can takeplace, whether it’s a trafficaccident or if someoneneeds to be questioned forsecurity purposes, and weneed to have their details.”

Palestinians who livein the West Bank carry theirID cards in a bright greenfolder. Called a “hawiyye” inArabic, Palestinians whowant to enter Israel needboth the ID card and a spe-cial army-issued permit. Those permits can some-times be easy to get. Forexample, Israel allowedmore than 300,000Palestinians to enter Israelduring the recent holiday

Where the ID cardsget even more confusing iswhen it comes toJerusalem. Latest figuresshow that Jerusalem ishome to 508,000 Jews and293,000 Palestinians, mak-ing a total population of801,000. The vast majorityof Jews who live inJerusalem are Israeli citi-zens, as Israel offers auto-

OF ALL THE DANGER SPOTS IN THE WESTBank, Hebron is probably the area Israelis fear themost. While there was no formal checkpoint as weentered Hebron, the Israelis had set up an“instant” checkpoint as they searched for thosethey suspected were plotting a terrorist attack. Also, since Jewish Israelis cannot legally enterHebron without permission, Israelis checked ourvehicle to ensure that our cab driver was Arab andthat we were not Israeli citizens. Hostility amonglocal Palestinians to the Israeli presence was pal-pable in Hebron, more so than anywhere else inthe West Bank.

Unlike political com-mentators and pundits whoare paid for their profes-sional opinions, CBCreporters must refrain fromexploiting our public broad-caster’s news platforms toexpound on personal preju-dices. Objective journalistsshould report on the newsrather than shape it.

An important linemust be drawn when a CBCreporter is given free rein tovent his personal opinionsand apparent disdain for

Israel for the attack. Theonly person interviewed inMacdonald’s report wasAlan Keiswetter of theSaudi-financed Middle EastInstitute, who stated thatAmerica was “in the pocketsof (former Israeli PrimeMinister Ariel) Sharon.”

Also in December of2004 – in the midst of aPalestinian terror war thatsaw Israeli families blownup in buses and restau-rants – Macdonald wrote ananalysis on CBC’s websitestating that “if Palestinianshave committed terror, theIsraelis have certainly com-mitted war crimes.”Macdonald then raised thequestion of whether Jewishsettlers, “thousands ofwhom are well armed andovertly bellicose, constitutecivilians or combatants.”Macdonald appeared tohave been suggesting thatthe murder of Israeli set-tlers may not in fact be “ter-rorism.” The sentence waslater amended online aftercomplaints to the CBC.Finally, in 2002, Macdonaldasked rhetorically whetherthe terror group Hezbollahis “a national liberationmovement or, as Israel andits supporters maintain, amurderous global menace?”

THE RAMI LEVY SUPERMARKET JUST OUTSIDEthe settlement of Sha’ar Binyamin is one of threeRami Levy markets in the West Bank. What makesthese stores unique is that they cater to both Israelisettlers and West Bank Palestinians. And, as theabove photo illustrates, Rami employs Palestinianworkers as well (the young lad packing the gro-ceries is a Palestinian). For some these supermar-kets show that co-existence is possible. ManyPalestinians, however, argue that Rami Levyundercuts Palestinian shopkeepers. The profitsreturn to Israel. But that does not stop Palestiniansfrom Ramallah going to Rami for the prices and thewide range of goods. And what is perhaps mostinteresting to the casual observer is the lack of anysecurity at the store. There are no security guards. There are no metal detectors. Rehabilitating theSwastika

We do not knowhow many readers haveever heard of the Raeliens. They were founded in 1974and claim to have 70,000members. They believethat a race of aliens calledthe Elohim created theearth and that journalistClaude Vorilhon was theprophet chosen to spreadtheir message. Their logois the swastika inside theStar of David. TheRaeliens claim that theswastika represents “infin-ity in time”, while the Starof David represents “infin-ity in space”. They pointto a branch in Israel asproof of their legitimacy.

The Raeliens areupset with the negativereputation of the swastika.

The goal of this “UFO reli-gion” is to remove theident i f i ca t ion o f theswastika with the ThirdReich. They maintain thatlong before Hitler chosethe swastika as the sym-bol of his regime, itappeared in China, Africa, and South Asia. “As longas we associate theswastika with Hitler andthe horrors of the Naziregime,” the Raeliensmaintain, “they own it. Wewant it back”.

And so vacationerson the beach in Long Islandlooked up to see a light air-craft trailing a flag reading“proswastika.org”. ThomasKaenzig, head of the pro-swastika movement, toldjournalists that he was“offended” because “oursymbol” is associated withsomething negative.

Not everyone onLong Island was thrilledto see the airplane, Thegroup’s website says thata cult activist carrying acart full of swastika signswas attacked on the beach,Israeli branch or not.
