THE ANGLIAN COINS OF CNUT THE GREAT. B Y H. ALE XAN DER PARSONS. ONG as the reign of Cnut was, extending from A.D. 1016 to 1035, the large number of types of coins ascribed to it in the standard works on the subject does not appear to be justified by the practice or exigencies of the time, or, on close ana lys is, b y the coins themselve s. The principal works on the matter are Hildebrand's Anglo-Saxon Coins in the Royal Swedish Cabinet, 1881 ; The Silver Coins of England, by Edward Hawkins, 1887; and A Catalogue of English Coins in the British Museum, Anglo-Saxon Series, volu me ii, 1893. Hildebrand appro- pri ates ten issues to th e reign, besides numerous varie ties ; Hawki ns giv es nine issues ; and the compilers o f the Briti sh Mus eum Catalogue ascribe twenty types, besides varieties, to this reign of nineteen ye ars. Th e reason for the mult ip lic it y of typ es o f Cnut in t hese mono- graphs rests, in great measure, on the fact that some issues properly bel ong ing to Cn ut 's ex te ns iv e Con tine nta l dominions ha ve been incorporated in the Anglo-Saxon series, mainly owing to the importa- tion, on some of them, of the Anglian title which, in reality, carries no significance, since England was Cnut's principal country, and his Contin ental issues were mainly based on Anglo-Sa xon types. It follows, therefore, that the Anglian title might appropriately appear on coins issued for circulation in Cnut's other territor ies. In actual fa ct , the coins of D enma rk of the time disc lose both the Anglian title and the Danish title, separately and in conjunction.
