If you want a frightening experience, head over to Statesville Haunted Prison and City of the Dead. The critically acclaimed haunted house has 20 years of experience scaring the crap out of you. The abandoned prison has been transformed year after year, adding new thrills and chills.

New attractions (or repulsions, if you will) include this year with several new areas, cell block b, the meat grinder, dog kennels, the outdoor yard, an additional bus load of convicts and creatures and a full attack on phobias with live snakes and spiders!

Statesville Haunted Prison offers three enticements. The main attraction of course is the prison in which you must find your way through 40 cells and come face-to-face with more than 100 convicts before escaping. City of the

Dead is the burial pit for the undead prisoners of Statesville. A series of twisted underground caves through which you must climb to get back to the surface before the Beast drags you to the bottom of the pit. The Sniper Zombie Paintball Ride The Sniper has been completely revamped and is a fully interactive, half-mile long ride on a military troop carrier truck equipped with 22 precise sniper paintball guns where you must take out the Zombies, before they take you out.

Statesville Haunted Prison is at 17250 S. Weber Rd. in Lockport/ Crest Hill and is open Thursdays through Sundays through Nov. 1st, as well as Wednesday Oct. 28th during the week preceding Halloween.

Tickets are $30 for general=admission, $45 for VIP fast pass. The sniper ride is priced separately at $20. For more information and tickets go to :www.statesvillehauntedprison.com. Plan on going on a week night to avoid the big crowds and long waits.

When I was kid reading the newspaper (kids actually did that back in the day) I once saw an ad for a place called Fantasy Costumes and Custom Wigs. The ad said “TV’s Welcome” I remember turning to my mother and asking if it took a long time to buy a wig. She, of course, looked at me like I was crazy and asked why I would came up with that question (it wasn’t the first odd query she’d gotten from me. I was one of those kids). I said, ,”Well it must because they let you bring a T.V. in with you.”

That was back before we referred to the trans community. Men who dressed as women (for whatever reason) were lumped together as T.V., short for transvestites. At least I wasn’t alone. According to George Garcia who ran those ads back in 1968 for his shop, Custom Wigs, he often got calls from people who thought he ran a television repair shop on the side. In fact one woman even walked into the shop expecting him to fix her set.Garcia’s stores (at one point he owned

five in the Chicago area) were a safe place for the trans community, long before they were welcomed anywhere else. His current location at 4065 N. Milwaukee would be open only to his invited TV guests on Tuesday evenings, from 6-10 p.m. His best wig stylist and makeup artists all stayed to assist all who showed. The attendees ran the gamut from professionals to laborers and many would bring their wives and girlfriends. To them it was a safe haven to let loose, be themselves and find new and fashionable look.

Garcia would serve drinks and food to lighten the mood and allow everyone to relax and really enjoy the experience. Those events continued for years but eventually fizzled out as it became more socially accepted and other businesses started doing the same. Male to female make-overs are still done to this day at Custom Wigs.

Of course, the busiest time of the year, is just before Halloween and Garcia says that some of the most popular costumes trends for the 2015 are Caitlyn Jenner, Donald Trump, Dios de Los Muertos, zombies, Ant Man, Batman, Superman and, of course, Elsa and Anna from “Frozen”.

Custom Wigs and Fantasy Costumes, spanning more than a city block, has more than one million items in stock and extended hours for the Halloween season, including staying open 24 hours a day from October 22nd through October 31st. For more information, call 773.777.0222 or go to their website at: www.fantasycostumes.com.

GAY & LESBIAN HALL OF FAMEINDUCTS New MeMberS

by Rick Karlin

Continued on following page >>

Chicago’s Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame (GLHoF), the country's only known government-sponsored hall of fame that honors members of the LGBT community, will induct 11 individuals and one organization, on Tuesday, November 10.

The GLHoF was established in 1991 under the auspices of what was then the Chicago Commission on Human Relations' Advisory Council on Gay and Lesbian Issues, a municipal government agency.

Beginning with the first ceremony in 1991, former Mayor Richard M. Daley personally participated in the Hall of Fame's induction ceremonies. Current Mayor Rahm Emanuel has done the same.

The inductees were selected by a committee composed of former inductees, which reviewed nominations submitted by members of the public. Nominees represent all of Chicago's sexual-minority communities, including LGBT Chicagoans, past, present, living, and dead, as well as those who have supported or assisted them.

"It continues to show how important contributions from our LGBT community and our friends pave the way for the future, to create change in ways that affect us all so greatly," said Israel Wright, executive director of GLHoF.

Hall of Fame inductees fall into one of three categories: "individual," "organization," or "friend of the community." Those selected for the "individual" category are or

were members of Chicago's LGBT community and have made far-reaching or significant long-term contributions to the quality of life of those communities or of the city as a whole. Those in the "organization" category are LGBT businesses and nonprofit groups that have done likewise. "Friends of the community" are non-LGBT-identified individuals and organizations that have contributed to the quality of life of the city's LGBT community.

Among those being inducted this year are:

IndividualsJean Albright, retired Air Force Master Sergeant, for her work to increase awareness of LGBT veterans and military members and

to overturn the military's ban on LGBT service.

Fred Eychaner, chairman of Newsweb Corporation, President of Alphawood Foundation, for his philanthropy, his public service, and his support of Chicago's LGBT communities.

Emmanuel Garcia, journalist, youth mentor, and community leader, for his tireless advocacy and his pivotal role in organizing Chicago's Latina and Latino LGBT communities.

Your LGBT History Month Playlist

In recent years, overlooked queer artists, including Smokey, Jobriath, Steven Grossman, Lavender Country and Arthur Russell, all of whom were too ahead of their time for their own good, have finally gotten some of the attention that they deserved. British musician John Howard is another such artist. An openly gay performer in 1975, at the time of the release of his major-label debut Kid in a Big World, Howard never fully reached his popularity potential in his homeland, and was completely disregarded stateside. Working consistently through the years, Howard now has a chance to reach a larger audience with the release of his new timeless pop album John Howard & the Night Mail .

Mika could have used a duet such as “Popular Song,” the one he did with Ariana Grande on his 2012 disc The Origin Of Love, on his new album No Place In Heaven. There’s nothing here that approaches the youthful exuberance of “Popular Song,” but maybe that was the goal. In other words, Mika sounds intent on leaving the “cartoon boy” of his past behind in favor a more grown-up perspective.

Olly Alexander, the out gay front-man of the British trio Years & Years said in an interview earlier this year that he’s singing about his “boyfriends” in the songs on Communion. The 13th dance-

pop tunes are more pop than dance, although there is a persistent beat on most of the songs. ”

Easily the boldest and bravest album of his career, Perpetual Motion People is the musical statement Ezra Furman has been preparing to make for years. Fully embracing his new “gender fluid” identity, Furman comes across at the ultimate violent femme, with vocals that undeniably recall Gordon Gano. In a little black dress and snagged black tights on the album, Furman appears poised to give people a perpetual good time and he delivers. From the exhilarating opening tune “Restless year” to the updated retro-pop of “Lousy Connection” Furman, backed by his band The Boy-Friends, sets the emotion in Motion.

Cabaret remains the domain of gay men. As a new generation of young performers who look like they spend as much time at the gym as they do brushing up on the standards begins to take its place at the mic in front of the piano emerges, they take new and interesting risks. Hot Nicholas Rodriguez is one such performer. Based on his one-man show, his debut album The First Time… features the talented vocalist demonstrating what he can do with show-tunes.

Motor Mouthby Parker Carr

Diesel has always been a tough sell in the u.S., thanks to the reputation it got from the dirty, clunky vehicles of the ‘70s, and because fuel economy has not been as important to car buyers as it is in Europe. To push diesel in the States Volkswagen, which markets its diesel-powered cars everywhere else on the globe, marketed a few models as “Clean Diesels”. Turns out that those cars weren’t as clean as Volkswagen claimed, and that they knew it all along.

Last month the u.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) retested Volkswagens after independent researchers raised questions about the company cheating on air pollution tests. VW installed sophisticated software known as "defeat devices" in the electronic control module of diesel vehicles for the last seven years. Software that was designed to sense when emissions testing was in progress. The software then switched the car into a sort of “test mode” switching the emissions controls to run during official testing. During regular driving the software switched back to regular mode, emitting up to 40 times legal emission standards.

Confronted by the EPA, Volkswagen "admitted" that 11 million of its cars world-wide did contain the software. Its CEO, Martin Winterkorn, who has a reputation as a technically adept, hands-on, micromanager resigned. As an engineer renowned his attention to detail, it is unlikely that he didn’t know about the deceptive software.

The EPA claims affected diesel cars are still safe to and hasn’t ordered Volkswagen to issue a recall but expects to do so in the near future.

The company has already set aside $7.3 billion to deal with the problem, but will, undoubtedly will have to come up with much more. The EPA plans to fine Volkswagen up to $37,500 per vehicle, with nearly 500,000 of its diesel vehicles sold in the u.S. since 2008, it could cost the company up to $18 billion in the u.S. alone. Class-action lawsuits from customers are also a possibility.

When the scandal broke on Sept. 18 of this year, the stock holders, fearing the kind of damage BP incurred after Deepwater Horizon, began selling off VW stocks. The company’s shares fell by more than 30%.

A couple of weeks ago, something occurred that shook me so profoundly. I was on the other side of the globe (literally, I was in Australia taping The Voice) when I learned that here in the u.S. racism against Latinos had taken center stage. I did what came natural to me. I declared my opinion and defended what was mine… my roots and the Hispanic community that I so adore. In reality, this is engraved in my blood. To me, bullying of any kind is completely unacceptable. It is something that I instill in Matteo and Valentino each and every day. I think that as parents we have a great responsibility to teach our little ones that life must be lived peacefully, that hatred is not acceptable, and that with love anything can be accomplished. I also think that it is just as important to show them that one must defend his/her convictions, that when one sees an injustice, silence should not be an option and that standing strong can bring external criticism, but internal peace. I do agree that life is already pretty complicated. That sometimes we think, why complicate it more? Why not let others lead the fight? However, life is filled with these challenges, and our children will often face them (probably at a lesser level) during their day to day. We now know that bullying is a very big problem, tremendously big problem. We have lost too many kids to bullying, not to mention all those children that have suffered life-long traumas because others use self-proclaimed power to belittle those who don’t feel as strong.

Enough! Let’s join our efforts as parents and talk with our kids. Let’s be the example and defend our convictions. Let’s teach them that their voice matters just as much or even more than those who want to see them defeated. I am convinced that this world can change for the better. I am also convinced that it starts at home and that conversation and love are the keys for this change. So I invite you to talk to your kids today. Let’s be an example that will set change in motion!

FIT TIPS by Michael elder

DIPS FOR POwERFuL PECS:

Michael Elder has been working as a fitness professional in Chicago for the last 15 years. He has a background in gymnastics and is certified as a personal trainer through the American Council on

Exercise (ACE). He can be contacted directly through his website, www.MichaelElder.com.

TO PERFORM THE ExERCISE:

• To get yourself into the starting position, hold your body at arm’s length (arms locked) above the bars.

• While breathing in, lower yourself slowly with your torso leaning forward around 30 degrees or

• so and your elbows flared out slightly until you feel a slight stretch in the chest.

• Once you feel the stretch, use your chest to bring your body back to the starting position as you

• breathe out. Tip: Remember to squeeze the chest at the top of the movement for a second.

• Repeat the movement.

When it comes to training the chest, there is one exercise that I have been performing for over 30 years now: dips. Between the ages of 12 and 15 I competed as a gymnast. The training was intense. My coaches used to torture my teammates and me with 45 minutes of strengthening and conditioning at the end of each practice by utilizing mostly body calisthenic exercises. One of the exercises that they employed every single time was the chest dip.

As a 12 year old kid, I was able to witness first hand just how powerful and effective this exercise was at training the pec muscles. That is why I have been performing them ever since. When it comes to building powerful pecs, this exercise should always be in your arsenal. For this exercise you will need access to parallel bars.

If you are new at this exercise and do not have the strength to perform it, use a

dip assist machine if available. These machines use weight to help you push your body weight. Otherwise, a spotter holding your legs can helpful. More advanced lifters can add weight to the exercise by using a weight belt that allows

the addition of weighted plates.

I find that performing this exercise near the end of our chest workout can be helpful to finally push your pec muscles to their brutal limit. I can still hear my coaches screaming

For this exercise you will need access to parallel bars.

“We Love Pain!” while they made us do these. At the time I wanted to strangle them. But looking back, I realize they were giving me one of the best chest building exercises that ever existed.
