Michilimacldnac, by th e French , in 1673, at a point on th e north side of th estraits at Pere Marquette's mission of St. Ignace clu Michilimackinac, now St.Ignace. Iri 1780 the military post, following Pontiac 's war, was transferred tothe Is land, as it was in th e best position fo r defense.
