At precisely 5:12 a.m. , a foreshock occurred that had enough force to break loose 20 seconds later which caused the shaking that changed San Francisco. The ground moved approximately 5 ft per second, approximately 3 miles per hour.

Bolinas, Ca This fence once was joined. It sit on the San Andreas Fault and slipped apart by the 1906 earthquake.
