PASTOR’S POTPOURI ALL IS VANITY

The readings today from the Book of Ecclesiastes and the Gospel of Luke help us to ponder what is really important in life. In the first reading the statement is made about working all your life and then what your have produced by your labor is taken over by another and you have nothing to show for it. In our times perhaps this statement sums it up… “You can’t take it with you”. In Luke, Jesus tells the story of the man who had a great harvest and had to tear down his barns and build larger ones. Then priding himself with the fact that he had no more worries and could just enjoy life, when he dies. One of the points Jesus makes is that we need to build up heavenly treasures rather than earthly ones that pass away.

The man who came to Jesus asking that the Lord that He help him to get his inheritance, is set straight. Isn’t it true in too many families when someone dies and they fight over who gets what that they sometimes cease talking to one another and it becomes a big mess. Let’s ask the Lord today to keep our lives centered on Him so that we don’t end up in a mess.

— Fr. Bob

A permanent Adorer is needed to cover Eucharistic Adoration on Mondays 4-5 or 5

The Knights of Columbus Palisade Peaches Pickup will begin at 1:00 pm and go until 6:30 pm on Saturday, August 6th. It will resume on Sunday, August 7th after all Masses beginning around 7:30 am. There will be a table setup at the

north doors of the church near the youth center. It is important for people to bring their yellow receipt with them to facilitate the process.

I want to be rich―scandalously, dazzlingly rich. But here’s what saves me: I long to be rich in the things that matter to God. I want to have friends who are friends with God. I crave

friendships with people who pray, who pay close attention to the ways God works in the world, who help me see the bigger picture than my privileged corner of the world. I want to read the newspaper the way God reads it.

On the day―through God’s mercy― when I see Christ face to face, I know that he will be surrounded by his best friends. I want to recognize some of those people. Better yet, I want some of those people to recognize me!

So, let’s see. If the gospels are an indication of WHAT Jesus loves, we know that he loves to eat! You can eat your way through Luke’s gospel as Jesus sits down to dinner, sometimes with the wealthy, sometimes with his closest friends, sometimes with the most loathsome people in the town. I get the feeling that, for Jesus, a dinner party is never about the food.

Something that apparently DOESN’T matter to God is personal comfort. Jesus sends his disciples out to tell the world that the kingdom of God has broken through, and his name is Jesus. That message is so urgent that its mes-sengers must go NOW, taking nothing with them but that heart-shaping good news. Jesus travels the length and breadth of Israel in order to comfort, heal, and draw all people to himself.

An open heart. A warm embrace of all people. And a good appetite! I’ve got the last one covered.

How are you filling your life with the things that matter to God? Kathy McGovern ©2016 www.thestoryandyou.com
