New Year Message of Chairman and Managing Director

stJanuary 1 , 2016

Dear colleagues,

I wish you and members of your family a very Happy New Year 2016.

Team NTPC has completed 40 years of excellent contribution to the nation. While powering India's growth with 45,548 MW capacity, we have emerged as one of the largest and best power companies in the world.

During this journey, we have developed a strong culture of performance and systems-orientation.

I am very happy to share with you that our Company is moving firmly on its growth path and is entering the new year with full preparedness to sustain its growth momentum.

During the year 2014-15, we achieved:

• Highest PLF in the country at 80.23% against an all India average PLF of 64.46%.

• Highest ever capex of ̀ 23,239 crore, exceeding the target of ̀ 22,400 crore. st nd• Commissioning of 1 unit of 195 MW at Kanti, 2 unit of 660MW at Barh-II and two units of 200MW

each at our first hydro project Koldam.

• Award of Tanda-II (1320MW), Khargone (1320MW) and Rammam Hydro (120MW).

Further, during the year 2015-16, we have achieved:

• Award of 250 MW solar PV project at Ananthpur (AP).st• Commissioning of 1 unit of 250 MW at Bongaigaon.

• Commissioning of balance two units of 200MW each at Koldam and COD of all four units in July, 2015.

• Commissioning and COD of 500 MW unit at NTPC Vindhyachal-V within CERC norms enabled NTPC to earn additional RoE of 0.5%.

• Excellent MoU rating by the Government of India for FY14 and poised to retain 'Excellent' MoU rating for FY15 also.

• Reallocation of Talaipalli, Kerandari, Chatti Bariatu and Dulanga Coal blocks.Contd..

8ISSUE:

In the year 2015-16, we commissioned 1150 MW and in the remaining period we are poised to st nd stcommission our 1 800 MW unit at Kudgi, 2 unit of 195 MW at Kanti and 1 unit of 250 MW at BRBCL.

stBoiler light-up has been done in Kudgi U#1 on 20.12.2015. Boiler hydro test has been done at 1 unit of Mouda (660 MW), Lara (800 MW) and Solapur (660 MW).

We are proud of what we have achieved and we are motivated by a strong sense of purpose for what is yet to come.

In the changing power sector scenario, we are coming across some new challenges related to the decline in power demand despite reduction in our cost of generation. This is leading to partial loading of our units. We have to think of running our units in a commercially profitable manner even at much lower PLF. And we have to act upon our strategies of cost optimization.

As you are aware, CERC regulation order regarding power tariff for the period 2014-19 has posed enormous challenges before us.Yet another set of challenges will arise from the new environmental norms notified in December, 2015 which may lead to large investments and the consequent rise in tariff.

Our sustained success amid numerous challenges gives me the confidence that we will be able to overcome emerging challenges with determination and concerted efforts. Our confidence arises primarily from the proven resilience, commitment and competence of the members of Team NTPC.

On this strong note of confidence, I once again wish every member of NTPC family a very happy, prosperous and cheerful New Year.

Best wishes,

Your Sincerely,

(Anil Kumar Jha)

Chairman & Managing Director
