[email protected] Harvard in Hanover for Homecoming Many people may look at Dartmouth’s 6-0 record and Harvard’s 3-3 mark and believe that the Big Green should put an end to the Crimson’s 14-game win streak in the series, particularly with a loud homecoming crowd at Memorial Field expected. But consider that two of Harvard’s three losses have come against ranked teams and all three losses are by no more than eight points, so the outcome of this game is anything but certain. And the Crimson enter the weekend having won their last 11 contests on this field with the most recent Dartmouth triumph coming 25 years ago, 39-34. The Big Green are enjoying a nine-game win streak right now, however, and would like nothing more than to push that to double digits for just the eighth time in program history. To do so, Dartmouth would like QB Derek Kyler to continue his ultra- efficient ways behind center. The sophomore leads the FCS in completion percentage (76.4) and pass efficiency (181.18), and last week connected on all nine of his passes for a modest 75 yards with a touchdown. He also ran the ball seven times for 44 yards, and even caught a TD pass from wide receiver Drew Hunnicutt to start the fourth quarter for some breathing room. But the Big Green relied a bit more on the ground game at Columbia, racking up 250 rush- ing yards, led by senior Rashaad Cooper with 82 on just eight carries. Wide receiver Drew Estrada, who leads the squad with 18 catches this season also did some multi-tasking by taking the handoff five times, once on a reverse that ended up as an 8-yard touchdown. While Cooper leads Dartmouth with 309 rushing yards this year, three others have more than 200, including wildcat QB Jared Gerbino with 291 and a team-high five TDs. While Estrada has the most receptions, Hun- nicutt has the most receiving yards (343, 20.2 per catch to lead the Ivy League), and TE Connor Rem- pel has the most touchdown grabs with four. As good as the offense has been this year (14th in FCS at 37.2 ppg), the defense has been even better, leading the nation in yards allowed (246.5) and rank- ing second in points allowed (9.7). Dartmouth is get- ting it done up front and in the secondary with the league’s sack leader in DE Rocco Di Leo — thanks to dropping the QB three times at Columbia — and the nation’s leader in interceptions (7) in CB Isiah Swann, who had two picks against the Lions. Big Green defenders don’t have gaudy tackle num- bers, partly due to the fact that they aren’t on the field all that much; Dartmouth ranks sixth in the FCS in time of possession at 33:17 per game. Linebacker Jack Traynor has the most stops with 38 (4.5 for a loss), followed by NB Kyran McKinney-Crudden with 30. The kickers haven’t been called upon much of late with freshman PK Connor Davis attempting just two field goals in the last three games. And punter Davis Brief averages just three punts a game. The return game has been solid with two of the best punt returners in the league in senior Dylan Mellor (16.7 yards per return) and Hagdorn (11.5). THE SERIES CRIMSON LEAD 71-45-5 Buddy Teevens is 2-15-1 against Harvard in his two stints at Dartmouth and has lost his last 13. This is the 122nd meeting between the two, the seventh-most played among FCS teams. In the Ivy League era (since 1956), the Crimson have a 38-22-2 advantage, plus have won 14 in a row and 20 of the last 21. The Big Green are just 6-16 against Harvard in Hanover with the last win coming in 1993. scouting the crimsonThe Harvard offense is a balanced one, gaining

more than 200 yards per game on the ground and through the air. But the star of the offense is speed-ster Aaron Shampklin who leads the Ivy League and ranks sixth nationally with nearly 130 yards rushing per game. His 7.3-yard average also puts him among the top 10 in the FCS, and he also has seven of the team’s 10 rushing touchdowns.

Lining up behind center of late has been Tom Stewart, who has a stellar touchdown-to-interception ratio of 6-0, but has completed just 48.0 percent (47-of-98) of his throws. He has replaced Jake Smith, who led the Crimson to the win over Dartmouth last year and was connecting on over 60 percent of his throws. But the sophomore struggled in losses to Rhode Island and Cornell, and has not been seen since the middle of the 28-24 loss at Cornell on Oct. 6.

Harvard lost even more against the Big Red when receiver and return man Justice Shelton-Mosley was injured; he is not expected to return this season. He was the Crimson’s leading receiver at the time with 24 catches for 299 yards, but Adam Scott (25 catches, 334 yards, 2 TDs) and Henry Taylor (15-196, 3 TDs) are solid targets.

The Harvard defense is always tough, ranking among the top 25 nationally in total defense. It will be strength versus strength when the Crimson unit is on the field as Dartmouth is 13th among FCS schools in rushing, while Harvard is 13th in fewest rushing yards allowed.

Sophomore linebacker Jordan Hill leads the team with 41 tackles, but the pass rush could come from anywhere with a dozen different players hav-ing contributed to at least one sack this season, led by defensive tackle Richie Ryan with 3.5. Another defensive tackle, Stone Hart, has been a disrup-tive force against the run with 6.5 tackles for a loss, second in the league to the Big Green’s Rocco Di Leo (8.5). Wesley Ogsbury is the top cover man with three interceptions and four breakups, which ranks second in passes defended among Ivy players, trail-ing only Dartmouth corner Isiah Swann, who has 14.

Jake McIntyre has been very reliable as a place kicker, converting all 15 of his PATs and 10-of-12 field goals, including all nine inside of 40 yards. Jon Sot handles the punting duties with a 40.1-yard aver-age with five of his 31 boots going at least 50 yards

and 11 ending up inside the 20.Harvard is coached by Tim Murphy, now in his

25th year in Cambridge and 32nd overall as a colle-giate head coach. The boyhood friend of Dartmouth head coach Buddy Teevens is 171-74 during his Crimson tenure with nine Ivy championships to his credit, and 203-119-1 in a career that included stints at Maine and Cincinnati. Murphy was a four-year starter at Springfield College, earning All-New Eng-land honors for small colleges as a linebacker before graduating in 1978. In 2007, he was inducted into his alma mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

last Year’s meetingDartmouth jumped out to a 14-0 lead by the

middle of the second quarter and still had a two-point lead when the fourth quarter started, 14-12. But Harvard, after missing a chip-shot field goal in the third quarter, continued its comeback with two more touchdowns to take an 11-point lead with 7:21 to play. Jack Heneghan led the Big Green 80 yards for a touchdown and the team’s first 2-point conversion in 10 years to close the gap to three. But the last-gasp drive in the final 1:36 ended prematurely with the second interception and third Dartmouth turnover of the game, leaving the Green on the wrong end of a 25-22 score for their 14th consecutive loss against the Crimson, the last three of which were by a com-bined six points.

nationally rankedOne of the last four undefeated FCS teams left

this season, Dartmouth became the last of the four to find its way into the national rankings, debuting at No. 24 on Oct. 15 in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll. This week, the Big Green rose up to No. 20, but still find themselves on the outside looking in at the STATS FCS poll as the first of the other teams receiving votes. This is the first time the Big Green have been among the top 25 since the conclusion of the 2015 campaign when they were 23rd in the STATS FCS poll and 24th in the coaches’ poll.

king of the urban JungleDartmouth ended a rare personal two-game skid

against Columbia on Oct. 20 by defeating the Lions in their homecoming game, 28-12, in New York City. In the series that dates back to 1899, the Big Green have suffered two or more consecutive losses just four times, the longest being four (1998-2001). With the victory, Dartmouth improved to 32-14 against the Lions in the Big Apple and 69-19-1 all-time ver-sus Columbia, a winning percentage of .781.

look What Dartmouth Drew upDartmouth dug into its bag of tricks at Columbia

to tame the Lions, scoring a pair of touchdowns on trick plays using their Drews — receivers Drew Estrada and Drew Hunnicutt. The first came in the third quarter on a reverse to Estrada for an 8-yard scoring scamper, boosting the Big Green lead to 14-6. Then on the first play of the fourth quarter, a handoff to RB Miles Smith was given to Hunnicutt, who tossed a 21-yard strike to QB Derek Kyler in the end zone for another touchdown. It was the first TD pass by someone other than a quarterback since Abrm McQuarters struck gold on a 23-yard toss in a 20-17 win over Towson on Oct. 15, 2016.

BroaDcastsDartmouth fans who are unable to come to

Hanover or the various venues on the road can catch every Big Green football game either on television or streamed over the internet on various services, including eight contests on ESPN+ and another on ESPNU. For subscription information, visit watch.espnplus.com.

For the eighth straight year, Dartmouth is teaming up with Northeast Sports Network (NSN)

to produce the home games and provide an enhanced viewing experience with multiple camera angles, instant replay and upgraded graphics — all in HD.

For those who are unable to watch the stream of the game live, an archived broadcast will be available for 30 days through ESPN+.

Tyler Murray will provide play-by-play on the video streams of the home games with Matt Goldstein analyzing the action. Currently the lead broadcaster for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Murray has also called numerous collegiate sports for Harvard, Boston University and Stetson. Gold-stein has over a decade of experience on football broadcasts, working with his alma mater, UMass, as well as regional broadcasts with Eleven Sports, Fox College and NESN.

The Dartmouth Sports Network begins its third year on ESPN Radio, serving as the home for all 10 football games. Fans can tune in locally on 94.3 or 94.5 FM, or stream it live anywhere in the world at 945espn.com.

Taking over play-by-play duties is Brett Franklin, who has filled in on Big Green football broadcasts in the past and is also the voice of Dartmouth bas-ketball and softball. He will be paired with Wayne Young ’72, who will provide analysis as he has for the 19th consecutive year. A two-sport athlete at Dartmouth, Young was a linebacker on three Ivy League championship Big Green squads from 1969-71 that went 25-2, earning first-team All-Ivy honors as a senior captain. He is a member of Wearers of the Green for having earned the Alfred E. Watson Trophy as Dartmouth’s top male athlete in 1971-72.

six and oh myWith the 28-12 win over Columbia, Dartmouth

has won its first six games for the 14th time ever and just eighth time since the Ivy League formed in 1956. Every season in which the Big Green won their first six games since the conference started formal play has led to at least a share of the league title.

gold helmet awardThanks to recording seven tackles with a career-

high three sacks in the 28-12 win at Columbia, DE Rocco Di Leo was named the Gold Helmet Award winner as the top Division I player in New England that week. The fifth-year senior enters this game leading the Ivy League in both sacks (6.0) and tackles for a loss (8.5). Di Leo was also honored by the Ivy League as its Defensive Player of the Week, as well as STATS by listing him as an honorable mention FCS National Defensive Player of the Week. This is the 12th Gold Helmet Award earned by a Big Green player in the last decade and third by a defender.

Passing PerfectionSophomore Derek Kyler was on target for each

of his nine passes against Columbia on Oct. 20, becoming the first Dartmouth QB this millennium to throw more than four passes in a game without an incompletion. As a team, the Big Green completed their first 11 throws, but on Dartmouth’s next-to-last play from scrimmage, Jared Gerbino threw the ball away to avoid risking an interception that ended the perfect day. Still, the 91.7 completion percentage is the highest for Dartmouth in the last 50 years. And the third best percentage came against Penn earlier this year (19-of-22, 86.4 percent).

nobody Does it BetterDartmouth is among the top FCS teams in a

number of statistical categories this season, perhaps none more impressive than total defense. Opponents are averaging just 246.5 yards of offense against the Big Green defense, which has led to a mere 58 points. That works out to 9.7 points per game, which is second behind only one of the other three unde-feated squads — Colgate (3.8).

tD Passes in 17 straightThat Hunnicutt-to-Kyler hookup (not the other

way around) extended Dartmouth’s streak of at least one TD pass to 17 straight games, a new program record. The previous longest streak of 16 games was originally set during the 2000-02 seasons. Dartmouth has also had a TD throw in 28 of its last 29 contests, and, oddly enough, the one game without one was against Brown in 2016 when the Green amassed 440 passing yards, the team’s second-most ever.

no ugly Duckling hereJunior Isiah Swann, already an accomplished

defender in his first two seasons, has emerged as the premier cornerback in the FCS this year. With his two interceptions at Columbia, he has upped his sea-son total to seven to tie the Dartmouth single-season record (set by former San Diego Charger Lloyd Lee ’98) and lead the nation. He needs two more picks to match the program career record of 13 set by Scott Sims ’89 and equaled by Lee, and he has another year to come.

heaD coachBuddy Teevens ’79, who

as a player led Dartmouth to the 1978 Ivy League championship, has won three more conference titles in 18 years as the Big Green head coach. He first earned consecutive crowns in 1990 and ’91 in his first stint, then guided Dartmouth to

its league-record 18th Ivy League title in 2015.A native of Pembroke, Mass., Teevens was a

standout quarterback for the Big Green as he was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American while leading Dartmouth to the league title as a senior in 1978. He also lettered in hockey, helping the Big Green to a third-place finish at the 1979 NCAA championship.

Teevens began his coaching career at DePauw before becoming the offensive coordinator at Bos-ton University in 1980. His first head coaching gig came at Maine, posting the first consecutive win-ning seasons (6-5 in ’85, 7-4 in ’86) there in 21 years.

After his first tour at his alma mater, he served five years as Tulane’s head coach. He was instru-mental in building the foundation that allowed the program to achieve perfection in 1998 with an 11-0 record. Teevens then spent two years as the offensive coordinator at Illinois before three bowl seasons with the Florida Gators in 1999-2001.

Prior to his return to Dartmouth, Teevens was the head coach at Stanford for three years.

10,000 at homeI’m not talking attendance in this note, but rather

points scored. During the 42-0 victory over Sacred Heart, Dartmouth quietly reached a milestone by scoring its 10,000th point at Memorial Field when Jared Gerbino ran for his second touchdown of the game late in the first quarter. Entering this game, the Big Green have scored 10,025 points while posting a 262-139-8 record (.650 win pct.) at their home venue, which opened in 1923.

Dartmouth trailsYes, the Appalachian Trail runs through the town

of Hanover, but the Big Green are not making a habit of trailing in football games this year. Dartmouth has been behind just twice all season for a total of 9:25, and in both instances, scored on its very next pos-session to reclaim the lead.

three QuartersWhile coaches love to say that they have to

play hard for all four quarters (or 60 minutes), Dartmouth has found a way to make that state-ment excessive. Through the first six games, the Big Green have led every game through three quarters, five times by 24 or more points. Of the 58 points allowed, 35 have come in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand. If you take the combined stats from those first three quarters and extrapolate those out, opponents would average only 172 yards of offense and 10 first downs per game.

Dartmouth takeawayNo team in the FCS has done a better job of tak-

ing away the football while also protecting it. Dart-mouth has not turned over the ball at all in three of the first six games and has just four giveaways (one picks, three fumbles) in all. The Big Green have not even turned it over on downs, going a perfect 10-for-10 to lead the FCS. On the flip side, Dartmouth has forced 15 turnovers (12 INTs, three fumbles), giving the team a turnover margin of plus-1.83, which also leads the nation.

second shutout of seasonThe Big Green opened the season with a 41-0

blanking of Georgetown, then one-upped themselves against Sacred Heart — literally — with a 42-0 white-washing of the Pioneers. It was the largest margin of victory for Dartmouth since a 49-7 win against … Sa-cred Heart in 2015, and the largest in a shutout since a 56-0 defeat of Columbia in 2013. This is the first Big Green season with at least two shutouts since 1996 (2) when Dartmouth finished the year a perfect 10-0.

First for gerbino and mangasOn the first Dartmouth drive against Sacred

Heart, wildcat QB Jared Gerbino — who had thrown six passes in his career and completed just three — surprised the Pioneers by throwing a pass. Even more of a surprise was his target, freshman TE Robbie Mangas who caught the wide-open throw and easily found his way to the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown. It was the first catch (and TD) for Mangas, not to mention the first scoring toss for Gerbino, who would throw another before the end of the half and double his career completion total to six.

cooking up a Baker’s DozenWith the 42-0 win over Sacred Heart on Oct.

13, Dartmouth rattled off its 13th straight victory against teams from outside of the conference. It is the longest such streak for the Big Green since the Ivy League formed in 1956. Over the last 100 years, the Green have had only one other streak that was longer versus teams that didn’t become members of the Ancient Eight — 26 from 1922-28.

Buck Buchanan award Watch listA 25-player watch list for the Buck Buchanan

Award, given to the FCS Defensive Player of the Year, was announced before the season, but STATS added seven players to the list on Oct. 18, including CB Isiah Swann thanks to his FCS-leading seven inter-ceptions. He joins fellow Ivy Leaguer Nick Miller of Penn, a linebacker who was a finalist for the Bushnell Cup last year, among the players on the list.

35-Point halfOn its way to a 42-0 victory over Sacred Heart on

Oct. 13, Dartmouth scored 35 points in the first half, its highest-scoring half since putting 35 on the board against the Pioneers three years ago in a 49-7 tri-umph. Only two other games have featured a higher-scoring half for the Big Green since the Ivy League formed in 1956, both coming in the 1992 campaign — 36 in the second half in a 36-17 win over Penn, and 38 in the first half in a 48-0 victory at Holy Cross.

home and road WinsSince the Ivy League formed in 1956, Dartmouth

has almost exactly as many wins at home (164) as on the road (166). But don’t think the Big Green have been better outside of Hanover; they have played 38 fewer games at Memorial Field than elsewhere in that span with a 164-112-5 mark at home (.593) compared to 166-145-6 (.533) on the road (and 1-0-1 at neutral sites).

hagdorn moving up career chartsWith his 12-yard catch at Columbia, Junior WR

Hunter Hagdorn moved into sole possession of 10th place on the Big Green career receptions list with 113, passing Mike Bobo ’92. He is also just 80 yards shy of the top 10 in receiving yards with 1,421. But Hagdorn still has a way to go to catch his receiv-ers coach, Dave Shula ’81, who finished his career as the leader in both categories (since passed by several) with 133 catches and 1,822 yards.

Dirty Dozen runnin’In the 42-0 win over Sacred Heart, no fewer

than 12 Dartmouth players gained at least one yard rushing the football, including junior LB Andrew Lemkuil who ran 24 yards on a fake punt. And yes, that's a lot for one season, let alone one game. The Big Green had 13 players gain ground at some point last year, but hasn’t had more than nine do so in a season in the previous 15 years (and probably longer, but I have other things to do).

historical offenseThus far this season, Dartmouth has averaged

37.2 points. Only once has a Big Green team topped 40 or more points per game over a full season, that

coming in the national championship season of 1925 (42.5). The program record for total points scored is 364 set in 1992 with quarterback Jay Fiedler helping to bring home an Ivy League championship. Dart-mouth is currently on pace to break that record.

slowing the running gameThe Dartmouth defense has been particularly

effective against the run game since the start of last year. Only four opposing players have rushed for even 50 yards in a game in that span (16 games) — two from Harvard and two from Yale — with the highest total by one rusher being 86 courtesy of the Crimson’s Charlie Booker. The Big Green have allowed just 72.8 yards on the ground per game this year, which ranks second in the FCS.

national television successThe game against Yale was televised nation-

ally on ESPNU, Dartmouth’s sixth appearance on an ESPN network (fifth live), but first in 28 years. The first appearance was a tape-delayed broadcast in 1979 against Brown, while the most recent four occurred during the 1988-90 seasons. The Big Green and Bulldogs have now played 14 games on televi-sion with Yale still holding an 8-6 advantage, though Dartmouth has won the last three.

gerbino takeoverAfter missing the first two games of the season,

junior Jared Gerbino had a modest season debut with 37 rushing yards on nine carries in a 37-14 win over Penn. But in the first half at Yale, the Dart-mouth offense primarily became the Gerbino show as he racked up 152 of his 169 yards on the ground, and both touchdowns, in the first half to help build a 27-10 advantage at the break. It may be surprising to learn that it was only Gerbino’s second foray over 100 yards in his career (202 against Princeton last year) and third over even 50 (71 at Penn last year).

Possession is 9/10ths of the WinIt is a good thing victories aren’t totally depen-

dent on how long a team has the ball as Yale ended up with the ball for more than eight minutes longer than the Big Green (as did Columbia). Even with those disparities, Dartmouth enters this weekend ranked sixth in the FCS in average time of posses-sion at 33:17 per game.

another 1,000-Yard receiverWhen senior Drew Hunnicutt hauled in a

47-yard bomb from Derek Kyler at Yale, it made him the 22nd Big Green player to top 1,000 yards in a career, and second member of the current team, joining junior Hunter Hagdorn. Entering the Har-vard game, Hunnicutt has 66 catches for 1,045 yards (21st all-time) and seven touchdowns.

Parker ParkourThree plays into the second half at Yale, sopho-

more Caylin Parker was handed the ball to pick up a yard to keep the drive alive on a 3rd-and-1 play. Instead, he did his own version of football parkour, bouncing off several bodies at the line before emerg-ing free and clear for a 66-yard touchdown run. It was the longest run by a Big Green player since Kyle Bramble broke off a 70-yard scoring sprint against Brown in 2013.

no Brief PuntsOver the first three games, junior punter Davis

Brief generally found himself in games facing a short field as six of his 10 punts came on the other side of midfield, which left his punting average on the low side. Although he wasn’t called upon at Yale until the fourth quarter, Brief was able to stretch his leg, so to speak, and made the most of the opportunity with a pair of punts over 50 yards and another that ended up inside the 20. His three punts produced a career-best 48.0-yard average, and the best by the Big Green for a game in eight years.

the 700 clubTwo weeks after Dartmouth played in its 1,200th

game, it picked up its 700th victory in program history by dispatching Penn in a 37-14 triumph on Sept. 29. The Big Green are just the sixth team in an exclusive group of FCS squads with 700 wins, four of which are from the Ivy League — Yale (906), Har-vard (872), Penn (854), Princeton (828) — along with North Dakota State (717). Now in its 137th season of football, the Big Green sport an overall record of 703-456-46, which is a winning percentage of .602.

ivy Players of the WeekThe Ivy League recognized QB Derek Kyler and

PK Connor Davis as the Co-Offensive and Rookie Players of the Week, respectively, for their perfor-mances in the 37-14 victory over Penn. Kyler com-pleted 18-of-21 passes (85.7 pct.) for 221 yards and three TDs, while Davis booted a 44-yard field goal — the longest by a Big Green kicker in seven years — and produced a total of seven points. It was the first time Dartmouth had more than one winner in the same week since Oct. 17, 2016 (Charlie Miller for special teams, Isiah Swann for defense and rookie).

hunnicutt hits 100 againFor the second time this season, and fourth time

in his career, senior WR Drew Hunnicutt hit the century mark in receiving yards by picking up exactly 100 in the 37-14 win over Penn, needing just five catches to hit the mark. One of those catches was a 59-yard touchdown bomb that boosted Dartmouth’s 13-7 halftime lead to 20-7 four plays into the second half. It was the second-longest reception of his career, beaten only by a 78-yard grab (ninth longest in Big Green history) last year at Sacred Heart. He added a 47-yard haul at Yale, and currently is averaging 20.2 yards, which leads the Ivy League.

than 12 minutes to play, it had a paltry total of 34 yards of offense. By limiting the Crusaders to eight first downs for the game, Dartmouth had held back-to-back opponents to less than 10 for the first time since 1976. The Green also had 10 tackles for a loss, just the fourth time in the last decade hitting double digits in that category.

swann songTurns out when junior Isiah Swann intercepted

a pass against Georgetown, he was merely warming up. The cornerback picked off three passes at Holy Cross — all in the first half — to help him earn not only the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Award for a second-straight week, but also the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Week. Other fun facts on his performance:•His three INTs tied a Dartmouth record held by

11 others.•The last player to turn the trick was Sal Sciretto in

an Ivy title-clinching win over Princeton in 1990.•Swann is the fourth Big Green player to earn the

league’s defensive weekly honor in consecutive weeks, joining LB Zack Walz (1995), S Lloyd Lee (1996) and LB Michael Runger (2013).

•DeWayne Terry Jr. also picked off a pass in the fourth quarter, giving Dartmouth four INTs in one game for the first time since playing Brown in 2015.

rempel Propels the victoryJunior TE Connor Rempel saw his first varsity

action in the season opener against Georgetown and tied for the team lead with four catches. Although he only had three receptions at Holy Cross, two finished up in the end zone on scoring throws of 32 and 13 yards. His first two career touchdowns came in the second half, turning a 20-0 advantage into an insurmountable 34-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

offensive lineman go on offensiveIt is pretty rare for an offensive lineman to score

a touchdown. So I would imagine the odds for two linemen to score in the same game would be astronomical. Yet that happened for the Big Green against Penn. First, Dartmouth fumbled the ball at the goal line in the second quarter, but senior Phil Berton pounced on the loose ball in the end zone to get credit for the six points and a 13-0 lead. The Big Green then surprised the Penn defense late in the third quarter, lining up OL Jake Guidone as a tackle-eligible receiver who proceeded to catch a 4-yard TD toss. Not only was it his first collegiate catch, but also the first time he had ever scored a touchdown at any level of football. Because of that, he can be forgiven for picking up an unsportsman-like conduct penalty for spiking the ball …

Passing PennDerek Kyler continued the recent trend of

excellent passing games against the Quakers. His 85.7 percent completion rate in the game is the second best in Dartmouth history (minimum 15 completions), trailing only Dalyn Williams’ 23-of-25 performance (92.0 pct.) against Penn in 2015. Over the last four years, the Big Green have completed 92-of-123 passes (74.8 pct.) for 1,048 yards, 10 TDs and just two INTs versus the Quakers.

lack of First DownsAfter shutting out Georgetown in the sea-

son opener while yielding just three first downs, Dartmouth provided an encore of sorts by having its way with Holy Cross in a 34-14 triumph on the road. The Big Green went into the fourth quarter having not yielded a point, nor even a first down, to the Crusaders while building up a 34-0 advantage. By the time Holy Cross got the ball back with less

campbell trophy semifinalistThe National Football Foundation announced

its Campbell Trophy semifinalists on Sept. 26, and Big Green WR Drew Hunnicutt was among the 179 players across all divisions of the NCAA and NAIA. The senior government major boasts a 3.49 GPA and has 58 catches for 880 yards and six touchdowns in his career.

shutout!Dartmouth began the season with a convincing

41-0 thrashing of Georgetown at Memorial Field, the first shutout on opening day since a 20-0 victory over Penn 42 years ago. It was also the Big Green’s second of three shutouts in their last eight games having beaten Cornell last year, 10-0. Coach Teevens has overseen nine shutouts during his 18-plus cam-paigns at Dartmouth, including another season that featured two shutouts — 1990.

100-Yard PerformancesDartmouth had a pair of players top the century

mark against Georgetown with RB Rashaad Cooper galloping for 112 yards on 16 carries and WR Drew Hunnicutt catching four passes for 102 yards. It was the first 100-yard game for Cooper and third for Hunnicutt, with each scoring a TD. The last receiver to get to 100 was Hunter Hagdorn, who hit the number on the nose against Columbia last year, while QB Jared Gerbino not only topped 100, but 200 on the ground in last year’s season finale against Princeton (202).

Defense DeniesWhile Swann won the Ivy Defensive Player of the

Week honor, the entire defense was playing well as an entire unit, yielding just three first downs and 112 to-tal yards. Only five times since the 1970 season has an opponent had fewer yards (including last year’s sea-son opener, while the three first downs are the fewest in that span; the record is zero set in 1962 against Penn. Breaking it down, the Hoyas had just 40 rush-ing yards, the fourth straight game an opponent had less than 55 yards on the ground. And the 72 passing yards mark just the fourth time this millennium the opposition failed to amass 75 yards through the air.

competitive safeguards committeeHead coach Buddy Teevens, at the forefront

of player safety on the field, is one of 22 members — and the only football coach — serving on the NCAA’s Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports this year. The commit-tee’s mission is to provide expertise and leadership to the NCAA in order to promote a healthy and safe environment for student-athletes through research, education, collaboration and policy development.

tri-captainsFor the eighth time in the past nine seasons,

Dartmouth will feature three captains leading the squad — seniors Matt Kaskey, Kyran McKinney-Crudden and Jack Traynor.

esPn+Last spring, the Ivy League announced it had

signed a 10-year agreement with ESPN to have the schools of the Ancient Eight stream live athletics events through the network’s new subscription streaming service, ESPN+. For just $4.99 a month (or $49.99 a year), fans can get all of the content they received for the previous five years on the Ivy League Network, plus events from numerous other conferences and professional leagues. Eight of the 10 football games this fall will be available on ESPN+, and the game at Yale on Oct. 5 was televised on ESPNU. Go to watchespn.com to subscribe to the service and sign up for the package you prefer.

Preseason PollThe Ivy League Preseason Media Poll was

revealed in August, and the Dartmouth faithful were understandably a bit surprised that a team that was 8-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play, tying for sec-ond and just a game out of first, was picked to finish sixth in 2018. Then again, being underestimated has to be expected when it comes to the Big Green. In eight of the past nine years, Dartmouth was pegged to finish lower in the standings than where it ended up when the season concluded. Last year, the Big Green were tabbed for fifth yet nearly shared the crown.

This year, Yale was picked to repeat as the champion with 11 of the 17 first-place votes, while Princeton finished second with three tabbing the Ti-gers to triumph. On a positive note, over the past 21 years, the media has correctly picked the champion just three times — Penn in 2003, and Harvard in 2008 and 2015.

kaskey Preseason all-americanPhil Steele’s College Football announced its

preseason All-America teams for the FCS with senior OL Matt Kaskey earning a spot on the fourth team. He was one of just five Ivy League players to be named to one of the four teams, joining Yale RB Zane Dudek (1st), Harvard PR Justice Shelton-Mosley (1st), Princeton WR Jepser Horsted (2nd) and Harvard OL Larry Allen III (4th).

nine garner Preseason all-ivy honorsPhil Steele also released its preseason All-Ivy

League teams with nine Big Green players listed on the three teams, led by OL Matt Kaskey, LB Jack Traynor and CB Isiah Swann on the first team. The second team was graced by WR Hunter Hagdorn and C Patrick Kilcommons, while NB Kyran McKinney-Crudden, DL Rocco Di Leo, LB Jake Moen and LS Grant Jaffe made the third team.

still all-time ivy champsSince the Ivy League began play in 1956, no other

school in the conference has won more football titles than Dartmouth with 18. The last time an Ancient Eight squad had more crowns than the Big Green was in 1961 when Yale had the grand total of two. The next season, Dartmouth equaled that total and has never looked up at another team since. But Penn picked up its 18th championship two years ago to match the Green, putting the 56-year streak in jeopardy should Penn win the race for a third straight year.

high-Profile hiresBuddy Teevens brought in a few new faces to

his staff since last season, including former Harvard receiver Seitu Smith (director of player personnel) and Vaughn Johnson (defensive quality control). But with apologies to those two, there are two others that made bigger splashes.

Last April, the Big Green brought former NFL head coach and Dartmouth wide receiver Dave Shula back into the coaching realm to serve as the wide receivers coach. Shula spent five seasons at the helm of the Cincinnati Bengals, and was the young-est head coach in the league when he was hired at the age of 32 in 1992. He held the program record for receptions (133) when he graduated in 1981, setting single-season marks as a sophomore and again as a senior. After a season in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts primarily as a punt returner, Shula began his coaching career as a member of the Miami Dolphins’ staff under his father, Don Shula.

The week prior to the season opener, Teevens announced the hiring of Callie Brownson as the offensive quality control coach, making her the first full-time female coach at the Division I level. Brown-son was a running back and free safety for the D.C. Divas in the Women’s Football Alliance from 2010-17, serving as a team captain five times and helping the team win national titles in 2015 and ’16. She also won gold medals with Team USA Women’s Football in Finland in 2013 and Vancouver in 2017. Her coaching experience includes three falls at Mount Vernon High (where she went to school), plus she was a college/professional personnel scouting intern with the New York Jets in the summer of 2017.

HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth dominated visiting Georgetown for four quarters to defeat the Hoyas on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field, 41-0, giving the Big Green (1-0) their first season-opening shutout in 42 years. The Dartmouth defense forced more turnovers (4) than the Georgetown offense converted first downs (3) as was the sophomore Derek Kyler completed 15-of-21 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown while running for another score in his varsity debut.

Dartmouth racked up 453 yards while smother-ing the Hoyas, which had 112, as senior Rashaad Cooper posted his first career 100-yard game on the ground with 112 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries (7.0-yard average). Senior wide receiver Drew Hunnicutt collected his third career 100-yard game on just four catches for 102 yards, including the game’s first touchdown on a 31-yard bomb from Kyler.

The running game was particularly effective as the Big Green collected 260 yards with touchdowns from four different players, the longest score coming on the game’s final points when sophomore Caylin Parker ran into the end zone from 31 yards out. Senior Miles Smith added 51 yards on 11 carries, including his 13-yard TD jaunt early in the third quarter.

The defense set the tone very quickly as senior linebacker Jake Moen nearly picked off a pass at the line of scrimmage on the game’s first play. After a three-and-out, the Dartmouth offense drove down to the Hoya 20 before settling for a 38-yard field goal by freshman Connor Davis on his first career attempt.

Another drive without a first down led to an-other Davis field goal, this time from 26 yards for a 6-0 lead after a little more than 10 minutes.

It wasn’t until the second quarter the Big Green truly started to assert themselves as Kyler connected with Hunnicutt on a 35-yard pass before finding the 6-1 senior in the end zone two plays later from 31 yards out.

Georgetown recorded its lone first down of the opening half following that score, but Dartmouth padded its lead to 20-0 shortly before the second quarter expired. Senior Dylan Mellor returned a punt 34 yards into Hoya territory, and Kyler guided the Green on a nine-play, 45-yard touchdown drive capped by his 5-yard run.

Dartmouth had a balanced attack over the first 30 minutes with 137 yards rushing and 130 through the air, as compared to 41 total yards for the Hoyas.

Coming out of the locker room, the Big Green

continued to surge, marching 61 yards following a 39-yard kickoff return by sophomore Niko Mermi-gas. Smith carried it in on the seventh play of the drive for a 27-0 bulge.

Hoya linebacker Owen Kessler provided one of the rare highlights for the visitors on the day when he picked off a deflected pass in the third quarter, setting up a possible 39-yard field goal. But senior Nick Peart broke through and blocked the kick, preserving the shutout.

The first of the four Georgetown turnovers was a fumbled pitch that junior T.J. Simpson covered up at the Hoya 27. Seven plays later, Cooper was diving in from the 3-yard line for a touchdown and a 34-0 advantage with 1:05 left in the third quarter

Junior Isiah Swann spoiled a 44-yard kickoff return following the score, picking off a pass on the very first play and returning it 15 yards to near midfield. With a personal foul tacked on after the play, Dartmouth had the ball at the Georgetown 36. Parker started the fourth quarter by galloping 31 yards for his touchdown, and Davis added his fifth PAT to complete the scoring on the day.

Dartmouth forced two more turnovers in the fourth quarter, one on a Mermigas interception, the other a fumble forced by sophomore lineman Jack-son Yost and recovered by freshman John Pupel.

The Big Green limited Georgetown to a mere 46 plays of offense with senior Jack Traynor posting a team-high five tackles, while senior lineman Jackson Perry had a pair of quarterback hurries.

Gunther Johnson completed 11-of-19 throws for 70 yards while being intercepted once, as was Lo-renzo Linsey. Herman Moultrie provided 37 rushing yards on 11 carries, primarily in the fourth quarter, but it was punter Brad Hurst who had the best day for the Hoyas, averaging 47.0 yards on eight punts with a long of 65.

Notes: The Big Green’s last shutout victim on open-ing day was Penn back in 1976 in a 20-0 contest …the 41 points are Dartmouth’s most in the season opener since defeating Bucknell in 2010, 43-20 … the 41-point margin of victory was the Green’s largest since a 49-7 win over Sacred Heart three years ago, and it was the largest shutout victory since a 56-0 blanking of Columbia in 2013 … the 112 yards of offense were the fewest allowed by the Dartmouth defense since Stetson had just 94 in last year’s season opener … junior Jake Pallotta and freshman Jake Al-len — a freshman transfer from Florida — both took snaps behind center in the fourth quarter with each completing one pass.

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Dartmouth defense was absolutely stifling for the second straight week as the Big Green (2-0) cruised to a 34-14 road win at Holy Cross (1-3) on Saturday afternoon at Fitton Field. Junior Isiah Swann, the reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, had three of the four Dartmouth interceptions — the most by a Big Green player in 28 years — to lead the defensive effort that held the Crusaders without a point or a first down over the first three quarters.

The offense was no slouch on this afternoon either, amassing 448 yards thanks to a well-balanced attack led by quarterback Derek Kyler. The sopho-more completed 25-of-35 throws for 258 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by junior tight end Connor Rempel in the second half to put the game out of reach. Junior wide receiver Drew Estrada had the only scoring strike, fighting his way into the end zone from 17 yards out as one of his team-high seven catches for 70 yards.

The running game produced 190 yards on 47 carries as the Big Green controlled the tempo throughout the game as they had the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Four different players had between 30 and 50 yards on the ground, led by sophomore Cay-lin Parker with 52 on 11 carries, including a 25-yard burst up the middle for Dartmouth’s first touchdown of the afternoon. Seniors Rashaad Cooper and Miles Smith combined to pick up 79 yards on 22 carries, while Kyler scrambled for 31 yards on eight attempts without being sacked.

Holy Cross finished the game with 209 yards on 53 plays, though 175 of those yards came in the fourth quarter with the game well in hand. Geoff Wade finished the day 20-of-31 passing for 196 yards and two touchdowns to go with the four intercep-tions. The ground game managed to gain just 13 yards and the defensive line dropped Wade four times for sacks, two courtesy of junior defensive end Niko Lalos.

Swann quickly established the defense’s domi-nance on the second play from scrimmage, snaring his first pick of the day — all of which came in the first half — at the Holy Cross 34. The offense drove down to the seven before stalling, but failed to put points on the board when the 25-yard field goal at-tempt slid wide to the right.

Freshman kicker Connor Davis got a reprieve on the next Big Green possession as Kyler completed his first five passes, including a 39-yard bomb to senior Drew Hunnicutt, one of his five grabs for a team-best 76 yards. That set up another 25-yard field goal, which Davis drilled for a 3-0 lead.

The second Swann interception at the Crusader 37 allowed Dartmouth to double its lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter. Davis converted his fourth field goal try of the day, booting the ball through the up-rights from 38 yards out into a 10-mile-an-hour wind.

Parker finally took the Big Green into the end zone on the next Big Green possession, galloping in from 25 yards out to cap a 10-play, 68-yard drive for a 13-0 lead and 2:28 left in the half.

The defense came through once again, pushing Holy Cross back seven yards on three plays, and the offense got the ball back at its 43 with 1:18 on the clock. After Kyler converted three consecutive third downs with a 6-yard scramble sandwiched between a pair of completions, he found Estrada in the middle of field at the 11. With the clock winding down, Estrada broke one tackle at the 4-yard line and fought his way into the end zone with three seconds left for a 20-0 lead. The Crusaders took a shot at a deep pass after downing a squib kick only to have Swann leap up and snare the pass for his third pick.

Dartmouth did not let up after halftime as Holy Cross failed to produce a first down on three possessions in the third quarter. Kyler, meanwhile, found a wide-open Rempel for the first of three times on a 3rd-and-2 play-action pass, and the tight end dodged one defender along the sideline at the five before tip-toeing into the end zone for his first career touchdown and a 27-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Big Green finished off an 11-play drive with a 13-yard toss to Rempel for their final points of the afternoon.

Wade finally found some daylight with a pass over the middle to Derek Mountain, who just beat the defense down the field for a 70-yard touchdown. Originally marked down at the two, a replay review determined he crossed the goal line before his knee touched the ground.

Sophomore DeWayne Terry Jr. had the last Dartmouth interception of the day in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Holy Cross added seven more points on a 9-yard toss to Tate Beachley with less than a minute to play.

Along with the four interceptions, the Big Green defenders had 10 tackles for a loss and broke up three other throws. Senior Jack Traynor led the squad with nine stops while classmate David Emanuels stopped eight Crusaders.

Ryan Brady led the Holy Cross defense with 17 tackles and Alex Johnson collected 13.

Notes: Dartmouth has won 12 consecutive non-conference games, extending its longest such streak since the Ivy League formed in 1956 … the Big Green improved to 40-37-1 all-time against Holy Cross … through two games, Dartmouth has forced seven turnovers and allowed just 11 first downs … the last player with three picks in a game was Sal Sciretto in a 23-6 victory over Princeton that clinched a tie for the Ivy League title back on Nov. 17, 1990.

HANOVER, N.H. — Sophomore Derek Kyler completed 18-of-21 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns, all in the second half, as Dartmouth (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) pulled away from Penn (2-1, 0-1 Ivy) to defeat the Quakers at Memorial Field in the Ivy League opener for both teams, 37-14. The win was the 700th in the history of the Big Green program, now in its 137th season.

Even with Kyler’s efficient afternoon, it was the Big Green offensive line that stole the spotlight as two linemen scored touchdowns in the game. Senior tackle Phil Berton recovered a Dartmouth fumble in the end zone in the second quarter, and junior Jake Guidone — lined up as a tight end — caught a 4-yard pass for the third score through the air.

The Big Green took a 13-7 lead into the locker room at the half, then scored on each of their first four possessions after the intermission with three passing touchdowns and a field goal to put the game out of reach. By the end of the day, the Dartmouth offense had the ball for 37:39 compared to 22:21 for Penn as the Green controlled the line on both sides of the ball to outgain the Quakers, 410-244.

Kyler needed just four plays to reach the end zone after receiving the kickoff to start the third quarter, capped by a 59-yard bomb to senior Drew Hunnicutt. The catch was one of five on the day for the wide receiver as he posted his second 100-yard game of the season (with exactly 100) and fourth of his career.

After the Dartmouth defense stopped Penn cold on its ensuing drive, the Green marched 66 yards in 11 plays, nine of which were on the ground. The 11th play, however, was a 19-yard pass to senior Hunter Hagdorn, who made a leaping catch over the Quaker defender to haul in the scoring strike for a 27-7 lead.

Senior safety Bun Straton quickly got the ball back in Kyler’s hands by picking off a Penn pass and returning it 13 yards to the Quaker 26. Dartmouth ran the ball five straight times before Guidone broke for the left front corner of the end zone where Kyler found him for the 4-yard touchdown toss with 3:32 still to play in the third quarter.

Freshman Connor Davis tacked on a 44-yard field goal — the longest by a Dartmouth kicker in seven years — by banging the ball off the left upright and just over the crossbar for a 37-7 lead with 9:18 to play.

Penn proceeded to get half of its 14 first downs and 117 of his 244 yards in the final minutes of the

game. Trey Flowers dove across the goal line with 17 seconds remaining and Jack Soslow provided the PAT to end the scoring.

The Big Green initially enjoyed a 13-0 lead when junior wildcat QB Jared Gerbino — returning to the field after missing the first two games — scored on a 5-yard keeper late in the first quarter. Early in the second stanza, senior Rashaad Cooper was battling to push into the end zone but was stripped of the ball. But Berton pounced on the opportunity and the ball, claiming it in a dogpile to preserve the Dartmouth touchdown.

Karekin Brooks scored the lone Quaker touch-down in the opening half, taking an option around the left end for the 7-yard score with 1:18 until the break. Dartmouth nearly added to its lead, marching down to the Penn 32, but Davis’ 49-yard field goal try was off the mark.

It was another balanced offensive attack for the Big Green with 186 yards on the ground and 224 through the air, but Cooper and Gerbino were the leading rushers with a mere 37 yards as five players ended the day between 26 and 37.

Senior Jackson Perry led the defensive effort with seven tackles, including the first sack allowed by Penn all season. Senior linebacker Jack Traynor made five stops, while the two-time defending Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Isiah Swann broke up a pair of passes, as did senior lineman Rocco Di Leo.

Penn quarterback Ryan Glover ended his day with 104 yards on 14-of-26 passing and an intercep-tion, plus ran for 20 yards on nine carries. Steve Farrell was the top Quaker receiver with six grabs for 56 yards, and Brooks led the ground game with 41 yards on 11 rushes. Jacob Martin led all players with 18 tackles, and Nick Miller added 12.

Notes: Dartmouth has won four of the last five meetings with Penn, its best stretch in the series since winning four straight from 1978-81 … the Big Green have thrown at least one touchdown pass in 14 straight games, two shy of the school record set in 2002-04 … Kyler completed 85.7 percent of his passes, topping 70 percent in each of his first three games. The last Big Green QB to top 70 percent in three straight games was Dalyn Williams in the final three contests in 2014 … with his 100-yard game, Hunnicutt is just 20 yards shy of becoming the 22nd receiver in Dartmouth history with 1,000.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Playing on an ESPN network for the first time in 28 years, the Dartmouth Big Green stayed grounded by rushing for 347 yards, their most in seven years, in a 41-18 victory at Yale on Friday night. Junior wildcat quarterback Jared Gerbino contributed 169 of those yards and a pair of touchdowns to help Dartmouth (4-0, 2-0 Ivy) remain as one of the four teams in the Football Champion-ship Subdivision (FCS) with a perfect record.

The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1 Ivy) managed to amass 429 yards of offense against a Big Green defense that had surrendered less than 200 on average over the first three games. But three turnovers — the last a pick-six by junior cornerback Isiah Swann — and two touchdowns called back due to penalties proved to be Yale’s undoing.

Dartmouth finished the game with 448 yards of offense while averaging 7.7 yards on its 45 rush attempts. Sophomore Caylin Parker rolled for 79 yards on just five carries, one a 66-yard burst to the end zone, and freshman Zack Bair added the fourth rushing touchdown of the night. With the consis-tent rushing game, the Big Green attempted just 10 passes — their fewest in 23 years — completing six for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Gerbino provided the first points of the night by gobbling up 66 yards on Dartmouth’s opening drive, the last of his three runs going for 31 to the house. The PAT sailed wide right, however, keeping the Big Green lead at 6-0.

Yale responded, however, by marching 75 yards in just eight plays, culminating with a 23-yard pass from Kurt Rawlings to Reed Klubnik. The PAT gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead, the first time this season Dartmouth found itself trailing.

That one-point deficit lasted all of four minutes as the Big Green matched the 75-yard drive, taking just nine plays with the last being Bair’s 13-yard scor-ing scamper as Dartmouth ran a quick set to beat an unprepared Yale defense late in the first quarter.

The game got a little sloppy early in the second quarter with three turnovers in the span of five plays. Junior safety Ryan Roegge tipped a Rawlings pass that senior Kyran McKinney-Crudden plucked out of the air for an interception in the red zone. On the Green’s first play, Gerbino was stripped of the ball and Yale fell on it. The Bulldogs returned the favor on a 3rd-and-2 run as senior Rocco Di Leo poked the ball loose, allowing McKinney-Crudden to cover it up.

Dartmouth did not waste this takeaway, utiliz-ing a 47-yard pass from sophomore Derek Kyler to senior Drew Hunnicutt that set up Gerbino’s second touchdown, this time from six yards out for a 20-7 lead.

Yale whittled the Big Green advantage to 10 with a 30-yard field goal off the foot of Alex Galland with 3:33 left in the half. But that left the Big Green plenty of time to cover 84 yards. The Bulldogs helped keep the drive alive with a pass interference call

on a third-down play, after which Kyler completed three consecutive passes, the last to junior Hunter Hagdorn for a 16-yard touchdown and a 27-7 lead just before halftime.

It took less than 90 seconds for Dartmouth to extend its lead in the second half. Three plays after receiving the kickoff, Parker squeezed through the line on a 3rd-and-2 run and never stopped until he reached the end zone for a 66-yard touchdown, the longest run by a Big Green player in five years.

The Dartmouth defense put the clamps down for the remainder of the third quarter, limiting Yale to a mere 28 yards of offense. Rawlings did throw a 70-yard touchdown pass shortly after Parker’s long run, but the receiver had gone out of bounds prior to catching the ball, negating the score.

Yale was not ready to concede, however, closing the gap to 16 points with a 74-yard touchdown drive that lasted over five minutes at the start of the fourth quarter. Zane Dudek finished off the possession with a one-yard dive into the end zone, and Rawlings completed the two-point conversion to Dudek to get the Bulldogs within two scores with 9:40 to play.

After holding Dartmouth to a single first down, Yale got the ball back at its 18 and traveled down to the Big Green 20 before Rawlings was sacked on fourth down by Di Leo, his second of the night and third for the Dartmouth defense. On the next Bulldog possession, Swann — the FCS leader in interceptions — stepped in front of a Rawlings pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to put the stamp on the victory.

Senior Jack Traynor led Dartmouth with nine tackles with Roegge and Swann adding eight apiece. Di Leo provided some of the biggest plays with his two sacks and forced fumble.

Rawlings finished the game completing 29-of-46 passes for 299 yards and one touchdown but was in-tercepted twice. Reed Klubnik was on the receiving end of 13 of those throws for 124 yards and a score. Alan Lamar led the Bulldog ground game with 68 yards on 12 carries.

Notes: Thanks to Swann’s pick-six in the final min-ute, the Big Green were able to maintain scoring at least once in every quarter this season … the game was broadcast nationally on ESPNU; the other five apppearances for Dartmouth on an ESPN Network were all on ESPN with the last coming in 1990 … Dartmouth has won six of the last seven meetings with Yale, but the Bulldogs still lead the all-time series, 54-42-6 … the Big Green last threw no more than 10 passes in a game in a 35-14 victory over Colgate on Oct. 21, 1995 (five pass attempts) … since 1970, Dartmouth is 20-4 when attempting a dozen passes or fewer … the last game with more rushing yards came in a 33-24 win over Cornell in 2011 (379 yards) … Kyler’s TD pass to Hagdorn in the second quarter extended the Big Green’s streak to 15 games with a scoring strike, one shy of the school record.

HANOVER, N.H. — It had been three years since the last time the Dartmouth Big Green had a 35-0 lead at the half. On Saturday night at Memorial Field, Dartmouth pulled off the feat again — against the same team — as the Big Green (5-0) maintained their place as one of the last four undefeated FCS teams with a 42-0 shutout victory over visiting Sacred Heart (3-3).

Junior Jared Gerbino threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead Dartmouth to its eighth straight win dating back to last year. The Big Green racked up a season-high 531 yards of offense, featur-ing a balanced attack of 277 on the ground and 254 through the air, while limiting the Pioneers to 159.

Gerbino shared the quarterbacking duties with sophomore Derek Kyler, who completed 9-of-12 throws for 126 yards and a touchdown of his own. Normally a wildcat quarterback, Gerbino connected on all three of his passes (matching his career total) for 63 yards and the two TDs.

Dartmouth wasted little time in establishing its dominance, stopping Sacred Heart’s opening drive in a mere three plays. The offense was nearly as ef-ficient, traversing 61 yards in just four plays, the last a 27-yard completion from Gerbino to a wide-open Robbie Mangas who rumbled into the end zone for a 7-0 lead. It was both Gerbino’s first career scoring strike as well as the freshman tight end’s first career catch.

On the next Pioneer possession, the Big Green came up with a fourth-down stop at the Dartmouth 36, then turned right around and marched down the field in just six plays. The big moment was a 32-yard completion from Kyler to sophomore tight end J.J. Jones III, setting up Gerbino’s first foray into the end zone on a one-yard burst untouched for a 14-0 lead with barely half of the first quarter gone.

Gerbino scored again before the end of the quar-ter, using a second-effort to break the plane of the goal line from a yard out on third down.

The Big Green continued to pile up the yards and the points in the second quarter, twice converting on fourth down to keep its fourth drive of the game alive. The first fourth-down play was a 24-yard run by junior linebacker Andrew Lemkuil on a fake punt, while the second was a Gerbino dive for two yards when needing a single yard. On the very next play, Kyler found junior Hunter Hagdorn, who made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown catch and a 28-0 advantage.

The longest drive of the game made it a 35-0 contest as Dartmouth covered 81 yards in nine plays with Gerbino throwing for his second touchdown. Junior tight end Connor Rempel was on the receiving

end on the five-yard score as the Big Green went into the locker room with the commanding lead.

The halftime numbers were not deceiving as the Big Green posted 340 yards of offense almost evenly distributed — 171 yards rushing, 169 pass-ing — while holding Sacred Heart to 72 total yards. Hagdorn had all four of his catches for 80 yards, that ended up leading the team.

Dartmouth received the second-half kickoff with senior Rashaad Cooper returning it 29 yards to the Big Green 41, then quickly added to its lead. Three consecutive double-digit plays set up Cooper’s 11-yard touchdown run, and freshman Connor Davis made it 6-for-6 on PATs for a 42-0 bulge.

The reserves came on at that point, adding another 132 yards of offense while maintaining the shutout. The Pioneers had an opportunity to put points on the board, but eschewed the field goal and chose to try to convert a 4th-and-10 at the Big Green 14, only to have sophomore cornerback Darren Stan-ley break up a pass to former Dartmouth receiver Charles Mack, playing for Sacred Heart as a graduate student.

Dartmouth also had an opportunity to extend its streak of scoring in every quarter this season when Davis attempted a 48-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. His kick had the distance, but it slid just to the left.

Senior Kyran McKinnney-Crudden and freshman John Pupel led the Dartmouth defense with six tack-les apiece while junior Niko Lalos supplied the lone sack. Junior corner Isiah Swann, the national leader in passes defended, broke up a pair of passes as well.

Sacred Heart played without its starting quarter-back Kevin Duke, turning to Grant Lowary who com-pleted 17-of-32 passes for 104 yards in his first action of the year. Julius Chestnut topped the Pioneers with 48 rushing yards on 14 carries, giving Dartmouth 15 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, while Nathan Balthazard had four grabs for 20 yards.

Neither team turned the ball over, though Big Green safety Bun Straton did intercept a pass that was erased due to a roughing-the-passer penalty in the second quarter.

Notes: The victory extended Dartmouth’s win streak against teams outside the Ivy League to 13 games, its longest since the Ivy League formed in 1956 … eight players had at least 20 rushing yards for the Big Green … the last time Dartmouth scored in 19 consecutive quarters in one season came during the 1992 season … going back to last year, the Big Green had scored in 20 consecutive quarters, their longest in at least 69 years.

NEW YORK, N.Y. — After holding a slim 7-6 lead at the intermission, the 24th-ranked Dartmouth Big Green pulled away in the second half to defeat host Columbia, 28-12, in the Lions’ homecoming game on Saturday afternoon at Wien Stadium. Dart-mouth (6-0, 3-0) earned its ninth straight victory dating back to last season, the third longest streak in the FCS, as the Big Green ran for 250 yards and completed 11-of-12 passes to fend off injury-riddled Columbia (3-3, 0-3 Ivy).

The Dartmouth defense took center stage in deny-ing the Lions from crossing the goal line until the final minute of play as senior Rocco Di Leo had three sacks in the first three quarters and the nation’s leader in in-terceptions, junior cornerback Isiah Swann, picked off two passes in the fourth quarter. The interceptions not only kept any Columbia hope of staging a comeback at bay, but also gave him seven pickoffs this season to tie the Big Green single-season record (7).

The offense had its moments to shine as well, utilizing a bit of trickery to punch into the end zone on more than one occasion. Junior wide receiver Drew Estrada scored on an eight-yard reverse to boost the lead to 14-6 early in the third quarter, and his position mate, senior Drew Hunnicutt, took a reverse and threw a 21-yard scoring strike to sopho-more quarterback Derek Kyler on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 15 points.

Kyler, who leads the FCS in completion percent-age, finished the game a perfect 9-for-9 passing the ball for a modest 75 yards, throwing for one score and catching another.

The Big Green may have had a season-low 356 yards of offense, but averaged nearly seven yards per play. On the other side of the field, Columbia man-aged 314 yards, 228 through the air by completing 31-of-43 passes, but suffered three interceptions.

The Lions served notice on the game’s first drive that they would not simply roll over for the Big Green, marching 60 yards in 12 plays before settling for a 32-yard field goal by Chris Alleyne. Columbia could have had more, but a 7-yard touchdown toss was negated by a penalty.

Dartmouth was unfazed facing a deficit for just the second time all season, traversing 75 yards in 11 plays — all rushes — capped by a 5-yard trek into the end zone by senior running back Rashaad Cooper. Freshman Connor Davis added the PAT for a 7-3 lead with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

But after picking up five first downs on their opening drive, the Green did not move the chains again for the rest of the half as the Lions defense stopped Dartmouth a yard shy of the sticks on three consecutive possessions.

Allyene cut the difference down to one in the second quarter with his second field goal of the day, this time from 42 yards out with the wind at his back. Late in the half, the Lions threatened to take the lead going into the locker room, but junior safety Ryan Roegge picked off a pass by backup QB Ty Lenhart — just in the game after Josh Bean suffered an injury — at the Big Green 4 with 40 seconds on the clock.

The halftime stats showed Columbia with many statistical advantages outside of the 7-6 score, out-gaining Dartmouth, 153-110, while time of possession

was in the Lions’ favor by more than six full minutes. But the Big Green asserted themselves when play

resumed as Kyler completed a pair of passes on the first two plays to match their total attempts from the first half. Kyler added a 19-yard scramble with a late hit penalty added on to push the ball to the Columbia 8, and Estrada scored on his reverse on the very next play.

Di Leo ended the Lions’ first possession with a fourth-down sack, his third of the game, and Dartmouth quickly marched back into the red zone. Only a fumble at the 7-yard line kept the Green from adding to their lead. It turned out not to matter as the defense stopped Columbia cold, and junior Hunter Hagdorn returned the punt 35 yards to the Lion 21 to conclude the third quarter. Hunnicutt — Dartmouth’s leading receiver this season — turned the tables on the first play of the fourth quarter by tossing a perfect pass to Kyler in the end zone, where the QB made a leaping grab for his second career touchdown, but first receiving.

After Swann collected his first interception at the Big Green 8, Dartmouth gobbled up 92 yards in eight plays with Kyler connecting with junior tight end Connor Rempel for a 16-yard score, Rempel’s team-leading fourth of the year.

Columbia posted its lone touchdown in the waning seconds as Ryan Suitt — who had replaced an injured Lenhart earlier — tossed a 10-yard touch-down to Ryan Young with the two-point conversion falling incomplete.

Cooper led the Big Green running game with 82 yards on just eight carries, while four others had between 30 and 50 yards, averaging at least 4.7 yards per carry. Estrada led the receiving corps with four catches, but Rempel had the most yards with 36 on three grabs.

Four different Lions completed at least one pass with Lenhart leading the team with 97 yards on 12-of-14 tosses. Emerson Kabus had a game-high eight receptions, but for just 31 yards while Kaleb Pitts had 83 yards on three catches, including a 48-yard bomb in the fourth quarter.

Di Leo and nickelback Kyran McKinney-Crud-den led the Green with seven tackles apiece with Di Leo posting three of the team’s four sacks.

Notes: Dartmouth has led at the end of every quar-ter this season … the Big Green have thrown at least one touchdown pass in 17 straight games, a new program record … Swann tied Lloyd Lee ’98, a for-mer NFL player, for the single-season interception record … he is also just two shy of the career record of 13 held by Lee and Scott Sims ’89 … Di Leo came up one sack shy of the Dartmouth record for sacks in a game, set by George Neos ’93 and matched by An-thony Gargiulo ’06 … Roegge’s interception was the first of his career … the Big Green, which entered the game third in the country in scoring defense, have allowed just 23 points over the first three quar-ters — and none in the third quarter — all season and 35 in the fourth quarter with their games out of reach … the lone incomplete Dartmouth pass came on its final play from scrimmage, but still posted the best completion rate (91.7 percent) in any game of at least the last 50 years.
