SQUASH CONVENOR’SMESSAGE

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to The Tanglin Club’s 18th International Jumbo Doubles Tournament, The Presidents Cup. The Tanglin Club Squash Section look forward to this annual event every year and we are delighted to take this opportunity to share our world class facilities with all participating players and spectators alike.

The Presidents Cup Tournament is Singapore’s largest international squash event and the Asia-Pacific region’s largest doubles tournament. It is now into its 18th year featuring over 150 players from many different countries creating a rich vein of diversity within the tournament.

In addition this coming March The Tanglin club will be involved in providing its squash facilities for the Lexian Cup another great Jumbo Doubles event open to all participant’s resident in Singapore.

Jumbo Doubles transforms the traditional game of singles squash into a whole new dimension. It is a true indicator of how well a doubles pair adjust to combine their physicality and racket skills to overcome their opponents. It is a game of strategy, stamina and bravery, as the front court players watch the game going on behind them. Over the years we have seen an outstanding escalation in the standard of the game proving that Jumbo Doubles is not a game that simply provides longevity to the aging squash player, it is a dynamic and exciting challenge to any player regardless of age or ability.

The continued growth of Jumbo Doubles Squash will only be made possible through the keen interest of various individuals and sporting clubs who continue to promote the game. This activity is made possible by the generosity and support of sponsors. The Tanglin Club is extremely grateful to all of our sponsors, particularly to our new Gold Sponsor, Citi Prestige and ACMA who support us every year.

We are looking forward to a spectacular weekend of squash, of re-uniting with old friends from afar and the forging of new friendships through our devotion to this great game. On behalf of The Tanglin Club, I would like to welcome you to what promises to be another excellent squash event.

With warm regardsAndrew Lockie

SPONSOR ’S MESSAGELINK PUMPS

Having played in nearly all of the doubles since its inception and been a sponsor for many years, it gives me great pleasure to be part of the sponsorship team. I’m sure you will all have the usual great time.

Should any of you have industrial pump queries, we not only have process pumps and fire pumps, but the pumps are now being used to protect ships against pirates using high pressure water jets.

Have an enjoyable time – remember not everyone can win. At worst, enjoy the game and the fellowship.

BRIEF HISTORY OFJUMBO DOUBLES SQUASH

09

The OriginsJumbo Doubles Squash originated in Philadelphia, U.S.A. In 1907, The Racquet Club moved to new premises and had a spare room measuring 45 feet by 25 feet. Frederick Tomkins, the Racquet Club’s English Pro, convinced the Club that the space was perfect for the old English game of squash doubles – which didn’t actually exist. The court was built in the winter of that year.

Jumbo Doubles Squash became fashionable in the USA in the 1930s. In 1935, it crossed the Atlantic to the UK, its Motherland, where three courts were constructed, two in London and one in Scotland at the Edinburgh Sports Club. The two London courts were victims of Hitler’s 1940 bombing blitz in World War 2, but the Scottish court survived and is still used today.

Hardball squash started in North America due to the colder weather conditions being unsuitable for the British softball. Whilst the majority of singles is now played with an international standard softball, hardball is still used in colder climates for Jumbo Doubles. In the warmer climes of South-East Asia, the standard international softball is used. When using a hardball, Jumbo Doubles participants play ‘sides’, whereas with a softball, they typically use ‘front and back’ positioning.

Jumbo Doubles in AsiaThailand: In the late 19th Century, a number of British expats and teak loggers were working in the north of the Thailand – and playing squash in teak courts. In 1898, fourteen of them founded The Chieng Mai Gymkhana Club, the oldest sports club in Thailand.

Page 12: 18 th INTERNATIONAL JUMBO DOUBLES SQUASH · PDF fileWelcome all participants to the 18th International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament ... organised ship and vessel layup services

One of them, Douglas Fleming Macfie, left an outstanding legacy when in 1909 he presented The Chiengmai Cup to the Royal Bangkok Sports Club – founded in 1901. The competition for this cup has been played almost continuously since 1910, firstly on singles courts, then widened singles courts, and since 1976, on a full size Jumbo Doubles court. The Chiengmai Cup became an international tournament in 1988 and is the oldest Jumbo Doubles tournament in Asia.

Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur’s Raintree Club officially opened their two Jumbo Doubles courts in April 1996. Their international Y.A.M. Tunku Naquiyuddin Cup has run every year since 2000.

Singapore: The Tanglin Club completed their first Jumbo Doubles court in 1999 and their international Presidents Cup tournament first ran in March 2000. A second court was built in 2007. The Presidents Cup is now in its 17th consecutive year and has become the largest softball Jumbo Doubles tournament in the world.

The Singapore Island Country Club completed their first Jumbo Doubles court in 2009 and it is anticipated that they will be organising major tournaments.

Indonesia: A Jumbo Doubles court was constructed in Surabaya around 2005 and an international tournament was organised.

We are fortunate to have a growing number of Jumbo Doubles courts, a thriving inter-Club squash community, and an increasingly popular international Jumbo Doubles tournament circuit in South-East Asia.
