Directed by Pawan Kripalani, the psycho-logical thriller released last year. "I am doing 'Phobia 2',but this time it's with a male lead. The script demanded amale lead. The film was critically acclaimed and it madeto the list of top ten films of 2016. MOM': SRIDEVI SHOOTS THEBALL OUT OF THE PARK

Just when you think Sridevi has run out of surprises, she does "Mom".A film so steeped in the angst of maternal revenge that you fear it willtie itself up in angry knots. But no. There is a cer tain… what do youcall it? 'Thehrao' - a moral narrative equanimity in the storytelling. Alot of it comes from Sridevi's central performance as a mother crav-ing acceptance from a disgruntled unhappy daughter. They bond aftera family crisis. Out of this age-old done-to-death yarn, debutant direc-tor Ravi Udyawar weaves an exceedingly impressive saga of ven-detta that leaves us disturbingly satisfied.The hallmark of a solid revenge tale is the ability for the audience toslip into the protagonist's mind-space and live his or her agony. Here,Sridevi doesn't allow us a moment's reprieve. It is hard to look awayfrom her anguished responses to her daughter's predicament for evena second. Yes, she is THAT effective. Nothing from her past perfor-mances prepares us for her bravura turn as a mother who will avenge thewrong done to her child, come what may.Sridevi surrenders her personality to the mother Devaki's role flowing along withthe character's startling deeds and misdeeds until we no longer know thedifference between the two. As Sridevi evolves into a determined avengereven her body language undergoes a change. There is a shot where shestands at a policeman's table in the second half, looking down at him withdisdainful contempt, the earlier hesitation and nervousness of an ordinary ag-grieved citizen gone for good.But "Mom" is not only about Sridevi's performance. Unlike many of her earlierfilms, including the wonderful "English Vinglish", where the rest of the cast paled

into insignificance, "Mom" is bolstered by a solid supporting cast. Sajal Ali asSridevi's daughter is vulnerable and strong. The girl holds her own before Sridevialthough as per scriptural demand, they don't have many scenes together.The handsome Adnan Siddiqui makes a terrific husband to Sridevi. They look likea couple in joy and grief and the family breathes an easy air of unrehearsedtogetherness. Akshaye Khanna is terrific as a police officer torn between duty andjustice. He has one major sequence in the parking lot with Sridevi where he proveshe is no spring chicken. We need to see more of Mr Khanna on screen. And thegrossly-neglected Abhimanyu Singh playing a ruthless Haryanvi lout stands out inthe villainous crowd.But it's Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a lowbrow detective who features in some of thefilm's most likeable scenes. His interactive instincts in scenes with Sridevi are onhigh alert. But he never tries to score over her. Rather, Nawaz plays Sridevi's foilperfectly. He is the family man with a conscience. And he bonds with Sridevi'scharacter on that level without intellectualising his involvement in her problem.Somehow, the even pitch at which director Ravi Udyawar holds all the charactersand their performances, goes a long way in giving this film the feel of an emotionalpayoff. Though the film is nearly two hours long, nowhere does the narrative allowitself the luxury of taking a breather. The dramatic tension is relentless. Very often,the scenes are cut in a way that they heighten the drama without resorting tohysteria. Some of the scenes featuring the negative characters could havebeen less blatant. One villain's post-vendetta appearance makes uscringe. But then subtlety is not thrust into the narrative. It flows natu-rally from the responses of the characters who when faced by tryingtimes gather themselves together to challenge the status quo.

PAES AND SHAMASDIN LOSE MARATHON FIRST ROUNDLONDON: Veteran Leander Paes' 23rd appearance at the Wimbledon Championships ended with a first round defeat in a gruelling five-setter against Julian Knowle and Philipp Oswald. The combo of Paes and Adil Shamasdin lost 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-7(2) 8-10 to its Austrian rivals in the first round,which was just one minute short of four hours. In a long-drawn fifth set, Paes and his Canadian partner lost serve at 8-8 and their rivals grabbed the opportunityto serve out the match in the next game. Paes and Shamadin have won two Challenger level titles together in the 2017 season.

Ban reality shows involvingchildren: Shoojit SircarMUMBAI, (IANS) Concerned about children's purity and emo-tions, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar has requested authorities toban reality TV shows that have the little ones as par ticipants.Many Indian television channels have been airing many sing-ing and dance based reality shows over the past few years,and Sircar doesn't seem to be hooked on them. "Humble re-quest to authorities to urgently ban all reality shows involvingchildren. It's actually destroying them emotionally and theirpurity," Sircar tweeted recently. Earlier this year, the filmmakerhad also directed a shor t film "#ReleaseThePressure", aboutchildren and exam pressure. It featured real letters written andread by teenagers to their parents. The letters ar ticulated theirdistress during exam time.
