CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TIPSTER:

Listen up!

THEY NEVER PULL APPLICATIONS FROM THEIR WEBSITE UNLESS YOU ARE THE IRON CHEF AND ARE WILLING TO WORK FOR MINIMUM WAGE; doesn’t mean that they will hire you then…they may just want to see what is wrong with you. You need to bite the bullet on this if you want this job and really “GO OLD SCHOOL” after you apply online, look up their HR Office over at TERMINAL THREE at Sky Harbor Airport, and get yourself spruced up in your best AZ Casual Clothes (Trim any facial hair or shave…they are nice people but, they are old school too) and go over and introduce yourself while asking them to pull your application. If you impress them with your personality, availability and your motivation, they will. One last thing, UMOM Campers already know this but, if they hire you, it is based upon how you answer one question (both in what you say but, also, in how you say it).

Page 6: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

The question ties into motivation for the prep cooks, cashiers, hosts and a combination of motivation tied into you skill set (experience here counts) for the productions cooks and Baristas. You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip! The reason why you may want to do this can be found at www.hmshost.com. ============================================================ TIPSTER: You will not see the actual position posted on the website, apply to the closest one available THEN, when you go visit their HR OFFICE at terminal #3…(YOU ARE GOING OVER, RIGHT?) have a list of the positions that you applied for. Tell this way “I was interest in _____ position @ _______but, I am open to other opportunities that might be open or that you feel that I would be a better fit?”

DO NOT…DO NOT REPLY “ANYTHING!” THAT WILL TAKE YOU FROM A SERIOUS HERO

TO ZERO WITH THEM. Remember if you do not come across as serious about doing a specific job, specifically for them, then they will not do anything for you. By using the above script, you show that you are serious but flexible…I know that it is playing games with words but it is important in how you say this. ======================================================= TIPSTER: If you have not already been to ONET to properly pad your killer resume with key words, phrases and to insure that you are showing ALL of the skills and abilities you have…then REALLY do it and reform your resume to include all this…Unless, you got Old Lady Luck riding with you today… If she is…buy some lotto tickets coming back. http://www.onetonline.org/ 35-2014.00 COOKS, RESTAURANT http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/2/35-2014.00?s=cook 35-3021.00 COMBINED FOOD PREPARATION - SERVING WORKERS & FAST FOOD http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/9/35-3021.00?s=cook 35-2011.00 COOKS, FAST FOOD http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/1/35-2011.00?s=cook 35-2015.00 COOKS, SHORT ORDER http://www.onetonline.org/find/match/5/35-2015.00?s=cook

Barista - Starbucks Interview - applied through college or university and the process took 3 days Interview Details – I kept looking for an opportunity to work for Starbucks. The person from college HR department interviewed me on the day of me walking into their office, got my resume and said she did not have any open positions. After I got home, I emailed that person with a list of reasons why I wanted to work for Starbucks on campus and why they had to take me. 2 weeks later there was a couple of open shifts and they called me back. Interview Question – Are you going to be fully committed? ==============================================================

Barista - Starbucks Interview - I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – I applied online and was called 2 days later. After a brief (and unprofessional) phone interview, I was asked to come in the next day for an in store interview. After having a 15 minute interview with the assistant store

Page 12: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

manager, I was told I would receive a call to come in for training after a background check. I was called a week later to start the following Monday. Interview Question – What do you like best about Starbucks? Why a coffee shop? Can you deal with this fast-paced environment? ===============================================================

Barista Interview Interview Details – Starbucks interviews with behavioral based questions, so questions like "Tell me about a time when..." The best way to prepare is to have multiple scenarios you can speak confidently about. Try not to ramble; the best way to answer is state the situation, what needed to be done, what you did, and the results. Interview Question – Tell me about a time you disagreed with your boss/upper. ================================================================

Page 13: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

Barista Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 4 days Interview Details – Initial interview with ASM. Second with Store Manager, gave it to me on the spot. Interview Question – Most of the questions come from an interview deck. "Tell me about a time...."

• when you had a difficult customer • when you had a disagreement with a co-worker • when you took a project to completion

=================================================================

All behavioral questions, STAR format. They will go over the "hows" of your resume more than the "what’s". Be prepared with specific examples. Feel free to use names of coworkers to help make your stories more real and personal.

Page 14: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

The questions I was asked: -Tell me about a time when you had an uncooperative coworker or a coworker you didn't get along with. What was the situation, why were they uncooperative, what was the result? -Tell me about a time you had to plan out a project. What was your role, etc? -Tell me about a time you had to have a tough conversation with someone at work. -Tell me about a time you had to bring a co-workers performance up. They will ask probing questions about additional actions you took, why you think coworkers were acting in a particular way, etc. Make sure you're able to get as specific as possible about these situations and your actions in them. I passed and was immediately asked for possible dates for a final interview. ==================================================================

Page 15: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

Barista Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 1 week Interview Details – I was referred by one of my friends who worked there and so he recommended me for an interview and so I took the steps in the hiring process. I applied online and 2 days later got called in for an interview. That same day of my interview I got two interviews on the spot with two different managers. They asked simple questions such as why Starbucks and so on. From there they told me I should receive a follow up two days after. The next day I got called in to meet with the district manager and got interview as well. Interview Question –

• Name a time where you had to deal with a ride customer and how did you handle it?

========================================================= Barista Interview - I applied online and the process took 1 week Interview Details – I applied online march 18, got called on Saturday March 22nd and we scheduled an interview for Monday March 24 at 12:30pm. Got called back the next day saying I got the job. Interview Questions

• What can you bring to the company? • Are you familiar with Starbucks dress code, do you have any problems? • What do you think Starbucks is about? • If you get nervous it’s okay to say it • I see you are wearing nail polish, is it going be a problem for you since we

don’t allow employees to paint their nails?

USED JOB SHACK TIPSTER #1 Now you know who this company is. You know where they post their jobs. You also know what skills are needed for each opening. So far, you are 100%! WATCH OUT!!!!! HERE COMES THE BRICKWALL!!! The next step is where 8 out of 10 of you will fail and your application will be deleted. This is the application process.

WHY WILL ONLY 2 OF 10 GET CALLED FOR AN INTERVIEW? WAS IT THAT ONLY 2 HAD THE EXPERIENCE NEEDED?

• Yes and No. This is really simple to answer. All ten people tried very hard and did their best to fill out the application but, ONLY two used a “CHEAT SHEET.”

WHAT CHEAT SHEET? • The cheat sheet was the job description from the employer. It contains all of

the information needed to “ace” the application. It has the skillset laid out in detail (DOESN’T IT?). It has the key words and phrases needed (RIGHT?). Everything that you need to get this job is laid out for you.

When the employer asks you to explain what you did for a living, only 2 out of 10 applicants will start with the employer’s cheat sheet and use it to create the perfect answer that will show the employer that they have the skills that the

Page 31: 18 April 2014 FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL

employer was looking for. In other words, they connected the dots between what they did and what the employer was looking for.

AS THE OLD MAN USE TO SAY… Not every day so you get the cheat sheet directly from the employer. BUMMER! That could really hurt your efforts and might force you to try to recreate the wheel to make your application. This is a real BUMMER unless you are a regular reader of the Used Job Shack and if you are, then you already know what we are about to

say…RULE NUMBER 4 – ONET APPLICATION.

WHAT IS ONET? http://www.onetonline.org/ ONET is a creation of the government and (in this case) they wisely spent a billion dollars to create a 4-5 page long, job description that breaks down your job (every job in America) by its skills and abilities – which includes all of the key words and phrases that you need to get pass the application gatekeeper (that prevents you from getting your application to a live person).

You use ONET to collect all of the key words and phrases that you will need to put into your application. These words and phrases are counted by the computer and that will determine whether or not you will get called for an interview. The computer converts what you write into a number score from 0 – 100+ and the closer you are to 100 (or above) will determine if a real person ever sees your KILLER Application.

As such, you can see why ONET makes the difference between getting an interview or not!
