The Rector Writes

Good Morning and welcome to Christ Church.

The following letter went out to all seat holders of Christ Church North Adelaide Friday last and I now publish it for the rest of the congregation.

I am saddened to inform you that I have informed the Wardens of my decision to resign the Cure of Souls of Christ Church North Adelaide Inc.

For family and personal reasons we have decided to return to NSW. We have enjoyed our five years here immensely. But this is the right decision under God at this time for my family and me.

So much has been accomplished these last five years and God’s blessing is evident around the Parish both in people and the buildings.

My farewell Service is to be the Sunday next before Advent, Sunday 25 November, at a combined Service at 10am followed by a Parish Luncheon.

During the interregnum, the Wardens have asked that Fr Martin Bleby be appointed Locum Tenens of the Parish. Please pray for Fr Martin during this period. Please pray also for the Patronage Committee as they seek God’s guidance in the appointment of your new Rector.

The Rectory Family join me in expressing our thanks to you as a Parish for your love and support of us during our ministry here and ask for your continued prayers as God leads us in new directions.

Yours sincerely, The Rev’d Canon Lyndon Sulzberger Rector, Christ Church North Adelaide

3

The People shall and for the entry of the Sanctuary Party.

℣ The Lord be with you.

℟ And with thy Spirit.

Then shall be said the Introit Sentence

R IGHTEOUS art thou, O Lord, and true is thy judgement: O deal with thy servant according unto thy loving mercy. Ps. Ibid., 1

Then shall be sung the hymn for the Introit.

489 Jesus, Lord, we look to thee (at 8am vv. 1 & 2 )

All kneel. The Prie prays:

O UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we

forgive them that trespass again8 us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Then shall the Prie say, together with the People:

A LMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that

we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Chri1 our Lord. Amen.

Then shall be sung:

Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy upon us. Chri8e, eleison Chri1, have mercy upon us. Kyrie, eleison Lord, have mercy upon us.

4

Then shall be said the Collect for the Day.

Let us pray.

L ORD, we pray thee that thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the People sit for the Epile.

The Epistle is written in the Fourth Chapter of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians beginning at the first verse.

I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you, that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to

keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Here endeth the Epi8le.

Then shall the people stand to sing Psalm 133 for the Gradual.

1 Behold, how good and joyful a | thing it | is : brethren to |dwell to|gether in |unity! 2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down | unto the |beard : even unto Aaron's beard, and went |down to the |skirts of his |clothing. 3 Like as the |dew of |Hermon : which fell up|on the |hill of |Sion. 4 For there the Lord |promised his |blessing : and |life for |ever|more.

5

At the beginning of the Gospel:

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto thee. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

The Holy Gospel is written in the Fourteenth Chapter of the Gospel of Saint Luke beginning at the first verse. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

I T came to pass, as Jesus went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath-day, that they watched him. And behold, there was a certain man before him which had the

dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the Lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; and answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass, or an ox, fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath-day? And they could not answer him again to these things. And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms, saying unto them, When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that, when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Praise be to thee, O Chri1.

6

Then shall be sung the Creed by Prie and People:

I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: AND in one Lord Jesus Chri1, the only-begotten son of God,

Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one sub1ance with the Father, By whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Gho1 of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suAered and was buried, And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. AND I believe in the Holy Gho1, The Lord and giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one Catholick and Apo1olick Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen. Then shall the People sit for the Sermon: The Prie shall begin the O'ertory, saying this sentence of Scripture,

I Daniel, prayed unto my God, and said: Hear, O Lord, the prayers of thy servant: cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary: and behold, O God, this thy people, who are called by thy name.

Dan. 9, 17-19

Then shall the people stand to sing the Hymn for the O'ertory.

371 All praise to our redeeming Lord t. St Stephen

(at 8am vv. 1-3 only)

Then shall be said the Prayers, the people kneeling humbly upon their knees.

7

Those in particular need:

Jan Keay, Heather Denholm, Sam Burston, Paul Leeson, Geraldine Leon, Keith Rayner (Bp), David Strachan, Jim Love, Jay Engelbrecht, Vicki O’Sullivan, Peter Hodgetts, Cathy Jupp, Alick Kennedy and Stephanie Morley.

Recently Departed: Judith Deborah Johnson

Years’ Mind: Daniel Price Pontifex, Ellen Jones Holt, Barbara Kathleen Debelle, Gladys Tarella Chapman, Margaret Elizabeth Jean Downer, Alfred John Witt, David Searle Maskell

℣ Re8 eternal grant unto them, O Lord.

℟ And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Let us pray for the whole 8ate of Chri8’s Church militant here in earth.

A LMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apo8le ha8 taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee mo8 mercifully to accept

our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we oAer unto thy Divine Maje8y; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they that do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Chri8ian Kings, Princes, and Governors; and specially thy Servant ELIZABETH our Queen; that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: And grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and indiAerently mini8er ju8ice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. GIVE grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly admini8er thy holy Sacraments.

8

AND to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we mo8 humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Chri8’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Then shall the Prie say:

Y E that do truly and earne8ly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from

henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

Then shall this general Confession be made.

A LMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Chri1, Maker of all things, judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time,

mo1 grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Again1 thy Divine Maje1y, Provoking mo1 ju1ly thy wrath and indignation again1 us. We do earne1ly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, mo1 merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Chri1’s sake, Forgive us all that is pa1; And grant that we may ever hereaEer Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Chri1 our Lord. Amen.

9

Then shall the Priest, turning himself to the people, pronounce the Absolution.

A LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and

deliver you from all your sins; confirm and 8rengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everla8ing life; through Jesus Chri8 our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Prie say:

H EAR what comfortable words our Saviour Chri8 saith unto all that truly turn to him.

COME unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St. Matth. xi. 28. SO God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everla8ing life. St. John iii. 16. Hear also what Saint Paul saith: THIS is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Chri8 Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim i. 15. Hear also what Saint John saith: IF any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Chri8 the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins. 1 John ii. 1.

A4er which the Prie shall proceed:

℣ The Lord be with you ℟ And with thy spirit.

℣ LiG up your hearts. ℟ We liE them up unto the Lord.

℣ Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. ℟ It is meet and right so to do.

10

Then shall the Prie turn to the Lord’s Table, and say:

I T is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everla8ing God.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

Then shall be sung

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of ho1s, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord mo1 High.

Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the Highe1.

Then shall be said this Prayer:

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, tru1ing in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Chri1, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his mo1 precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Then the Prie, anding before the Table, shall say the Prayer of Consecration.

A LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy did8 give thine only Son Jesus Chri8 to suAer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation

of himself once oAered) a full, perfect, and suHcient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did in8itute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again.

11

HEAR us, O merciful Father, we mo8 humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Chri8’s holy in8itution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his mo8 blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, TAKE, EAT, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU: DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

LIKEWISE aGer supper he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

DRINK YE ALL OF THIS; FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS: DO THIS, AS OFT AS YE SHALL DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving.

MOST humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy son Jesus Chri8, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

AND here we oAer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that all we, who are partakers of this holy Communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction.

AND although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to oAer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our oAences.

THROUGH Jesus Chri8 our Lord; by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Gho8, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

12

Then shall the Prie sing the Lord’s Prayer, together with the People.

As our Saviour Chri8 hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to pray:

O UR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass again1 us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

℣ The peace of the Lord be alway with you.

℟ And with thy spirit.

Then shall be sung the Agnus Dei.

O Lamb of God, that take1 away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that take1 away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that take1 away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

And a4er that shall the people, meekly kneeling, receive communion.

(Please note that we do not o'er intinction of the ho wafer into the Chalice.)

The Ministry of the Laying on of Hands and Prayer is offered in the Lady Chapel by Fr David Keay during the distribution of Communion. Please avail yourself of this Ministry of Prayer.

Communion Devotion Lord Jesus Christ,

by this holy Sacrament of thy Body and Blood may I be always united with thee and with all thy saints,

here and above, and worship thee

13

Then shall be sung the Communion Hymn

328 The Son of God proclaim

A4er shall be said as followeth:

A LMIGHTY and everliving God, we mo8 heartily thank thee, for that thou do8 vouchsafe to feed us, who have duly received these holy my8eries, with the spiritual food of the mo8 precious Body

and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Chri8; and do8 assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the my8ical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everla8ing kingdom, by the merits of the mo8 precious death and passion of thy dear Son. AND we mo8 humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assi8 us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou ha8 prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Chri8 our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Gho8, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Please and to sing the Gloria.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo

G LORY be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God,

heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O LORD, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Chri1; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that take1 away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that take1 away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that take1 away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sitte1 at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

FOR thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Chri1, with the Holy Gho1, art mo1 high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

14

Then the Priest shall give this Blessing. Please kneel.

Today’s HymnodyToday’s HymnodyToday’s HymnodyToday’s Hymnody

The hymns today are all, in one way or another, reflections on the teaching of the Epistle’s exhortation to “keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”. In the Introit, Jesus, Lord, we look to thee (489) we are inspired by Charles Wesley’s words to cherish our membership of the fellowship of those who believe in Christ and who seek, by his grace, to live together in harmony and to express in our lives the depths of love and the heights of holiness. The Offertory hymn All praise to our redeeming Lord, is another hymn in which Charles Wesley stresses movingly the bonds of mutual love which draw members of the congregation into a unity of spirit which is characterised by JOY and PEACE. The love which binds us to Christ also binds us to one another, rejoicing in the gifts he has bestowed on each. Such fellowship as we have here, imperfect in this life, will culminate in the joys of heaven when we meet again in our Father’s kingdom. The Communion hymn The Son of God proclaim, by Basil Bridge, minister of the United Reformed Chapel in Harrold, Bedfordshire UK, from 1989-94, reminds us that our Lord and King “bids us gather as his friends” as we share his holy Sacrament. The final hymn, Thy hand, O God, has guided thy flock from age to age, because it is often sung as a processional, holds for us associations of both PILGRIMAGE and TRIUMPH — of God being with us on our way and waiting to meet us at our journey’s end. Each verse ends with words that echo the Epistle for today, proclaiming our unity in Christ our Lord. *Please note that there will be no more Notes on the Hymnody until after the return of the Vicar Choral in November.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME STARTS

Daylight saving starts next Sunday, 7th October 2012. Please do not forget to set your clock forward by one hour on Saturday night as this will ensure you arrive for the service on Sunday at the correct time.

MORNING TEA

after the 10.30am Sung Eucharist From time to time a kind person or two brings in a plate/s of food for morning tea - cake, buttered buns and so on, which makes our time of fellowship over morning tea just that much nicer. Thank you to those who have thought to do so. Can we make this a regular occurrence? The same person/s need not supply food every week, but perhaps once a month on a particular Sunday, so that if we have 12 - 16 people prepared to supply a plate of food once a month, it would not be an onerous undertaking. One of those dreaded Rosters could be established! Elaine Edwards will be happy to receive offers. Thank you.

BIBLE STUDIES

Please note that the final series for the year will begin on 5 November.

FRANCISCAN SEMINAR DAY — 6 OCTOBER

The Franciscan Seminar Day, entitled “The Radical Love of Jesus” will be held at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Adelaide from 9.00am—9.00pm on Saturday 6 October. If you are interested there is a flyer on the notice board in the hall, and a copy of the day’s program is available from the office.

LETTER BOX DROP

Can you help publicise the fete? Are you able to drop flyers into letter boxes in North Adelaide or your own area? Please talk to the parish office if you are able to help.
