On behalf of Langley City Council, I extend a warm welcome to the participants in this year’s Annual Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival. I applaud each of you for taking part in this exhibition of your musical passions and for your aspirations and dedication to evolving your skills. This festival showcases your flourishing talents and allows our community to reap the rewards of the professional guidance, as well as the scholarship and award opportunities you are receiving. Excellence in education reaches far beyond the student and I commend the festival organizers for cultivating a supportive and encouraging approach to inspire the gifted musicians from our community and beyond. Peteris Zarins, Toronto, ONSenior Piano

Peteris Zarins teaches private lessons and is currently an instructor of piano, piano pedagogy, and all levels of music history at The Royal Conservatory School and the Young Artists Performance Academy of The Glenn Gould School.

His piano instruction was principally with Gerald Rutledge at The Conservatory. He studied piano pedagogy with Boris Berlin and Margaret Parsons-Poole, piano with Patricia Parr at the University of Toronto and Benning Dexter at the University of Michigan, & UNDERtook collaborative piano mentorships with Avrahm Galper, Jean MacPhail, and Roxolana Roslak and advanced music history studies with Glenn Watkins and Richard Crawford.

Mr. Zarins is a sought-after workshop clinician for Royal Conservatory Examinations, The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited, the Piano Pedagogy Summit at The Conservatory, and teacher information sessions for The Music Development Program. He presented as a clinician at the MTNA/CFMTA Collaborative Conference in Toronto and at MTNA conferences in Denver and Austin. Peteris was a featured presenter at the Calgary Summer Music

Camp, the BCMTA Conference, the Alberta Music Conference, and the North York Festival. He frequently gives presentations on Latvian classical and contemporary music in Canada and the USA.

Festivals at which Mr. Zarins has adjudicated include Kiwanis Music Festivals in Winnipeg and Windsor, Brantford Contemporary Showcase, the Brockville Lions Festival, and numerous festivals across Ontario. He has done scholarship adjudication for The Conservatory and for ORMTA in Mississauga-Etobicoke, Halton-Peel, and Toronto Central.

Peteris Zarins has undertaken several tours of Eastern Canada for Jeunesses Musicales. He has performed both as a soloist and as a collaborative artist; venues included Weill Auditorium in New York City, Chicago Symphony Hall, The Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, the Orford Center in Quebec, Glenn Gould Theatre, the AGO, Hamilton Art Gallery, and Hamilton Place. He has performed with soloists of the Riga, Stockholm, Vienna, Stuttgart, Houston, Santa Fe operas, the Canadian Opera Company, and Opera Atelier. Performance highlights include his participation in the Penderecki Tribute Concert at Massey Hall, and playing both solo and collaborative roles at The Latvian International Song and Dance Festivals in Toronto, Montreal, Cleveland, Chicago, and Indianapolis. Peteris is a member with flutist Jamie Thompson and saxophonist Bruce Redstone of the Kalais Trio, which has premiered works including Talivaldis Kenins's Chamber Concerto and the song cycle Songs for Amanda.

Formerly the chief examiner, Training and Development, at The Conservatory, Peteris Zarins is currently the program specialist for The Music Development Program. He served as chair of the theory department at The Conservatory School, and is a long-standing member of Academic Council. Mr. Zarins is co-author of the three-volume music history series, Explorations, with Janet Lopinski and Joe Ringhofer.

Bernadette Geras maintains a large studio, where she teaches piano, theory, and composition. Her students participate in festivals and exams and perform regularly in recitals and master classes, in which they sometimes play Ms. Geras's own compositions. Some of her students have made their own CDs at a professional recording studio. In addition to her private studio, Bernadette teaches through the University of Manitoba, Preparatory Studies Division, where she also serves as a clinician for piano master classes and as a collaborative pianist for vocal master classes and auditions.

Bernadette has adjudicated at the Mountain Music Festival, Kenora District Festival of the Arts, and Turtle River Festival of the Arts.

In December 2011 Ms. Geras participated in the creation of a mini-musical called “The Compassion Project,” where students were guided to make their own music and choreography to bring to life the words of the poet Manju Lodha. Bernadette regularly collaborates with her students in duets and duos and accompanies various vocalists and instrumentalists. She frequently accompanies singers for recordings and is a regular keyboard player for St. Bernadette Parish. Previously she was an accompanist for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Professional Division. Bernadette has been a regular accompanist for Rhonda Head.

Derek Zhi Guang Chiu, Calgary, ABIntermediate & Senor Piano

Brenda Fedoruk, Vancouver, BCWoodwinds

Canadian pianist Derek Zhi Guang Chiu began formal music training with Brian Cross in Calgary, Alberta. Mr. Chiu continued his studies with Dr. E. Gregory Butler and Joel Hastings at the University of Windsor, where he graduated with Bachelor of Music Therapy. He attended the Manhattan School of Music, graduating with a Master of Music degree in May 2003 under the guidance of Solomon Mikowsky (featured in Benjamin Saver's book The Most Wanted Piano Teachers in the USA) and Donn-Alexander Feder. Mr. Chiu has also worked with notable chamber musician Daniel Epstein of the Raphael Trio and has performed in master classes with Janina Fialkowska, Robin Harrison, James Howsmon, Lorrin Hollander, Ramzi Yassa, Cecilio Tieles and Jesus Angel Rodriquez.

Notable recitals have taken place in New York City, Toronto, Calgary, Windsor, and Connecticut. He has performed with the Windsor Community Orchestra on three occasions, the Rockland Symphony Orchestra and most recently with the Briercrest College Orchestra. In the summer of 2002, Mr. Chiu was invited to perform at Solomon Mikowsky's International Piano Festivals with performances in Tenerife (Canary Islands), Vila Seca (Spain), and Paris (France). He continues to perform actively throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Chiu has presented lectures on topics such as the Piano Sonatas and Piano Concertos of W.A. Mozart. Performances of Mr. Chiu have been heard on Fairchild Radio in Canada.

Brenda Fedoruk is currently Principal Flute of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, a position she has held for more than 15 years. As a longtime member (Flute and Piccolo) of the CBC Radio Orchestra, she was also the Musicians’ Contractor until the orchestra’s disbanding in 2008. A busy free-lance player, she performs often with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and has played with the touring orchestras of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the National Ballet. She has performed in many major musical productions including the Vancouver productions of Les Miserables, Showboat, Sunset Boulevard, Ragtime and Phantom of the Opera.

Ms. Fedoruk’s discography includes many CDs on the SM5000 series with the CBC Radio Orchestra, several discs on the Artifact, Atma and CentreDisc labels with the Turning Point Ensemble, the Skylark label with Chor Leoni and the Elektra Women’s Choir and several private labels featuring The Vancouver Men’s Chorus and music by Three Hornby Island Composers. Her first solo CD, ‘I Remember,’ with mezzo-soprano Sarah Fryer is now available. This disc features two world premier recordings—Michael Cohen’s From the Wall and Owen Underhill’s Remember.

Ms. Fedoruk has been the Conductor and Music Director of the Capilano Flute Choir for more than ten years. The Capilano Flute Choir is an adult amateur ensemble. Performing on all instruments in the flute family—piccolo, C flute, alto flute and bass flute–the CFC presents several concerts each year at elder care facilities and community events.Ms. Fedoruk holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia where she graduated first in her class. Extended studies have taken her to the Konservatorium und Musikhochschule in Zurich, Switzerland where she resided for two years, then to Toronto where she was one of two Canadian flutists selected to participate in the Orchestral Training Program administered by the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her formative teachers include Camille Churchfield, André Jaunet, and Paul Douglas.

Ken Stromberg, Vernon, BCViolin & Viola

Brian Mix, Vancouver, BCCello & Chamber Groups

Ken Stromberg began violin studies in Edmonton at age five. Over the years he was first prize winner of numerous local and Provincial competitions, a four-time silver medal recipient from the Royal Conservatory, and winner of various awards and scholarships including an Alberta Government scholarship and Canada council grant. Mr. Stromberg earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Alberta. Postgraduate studies followed at the University of Indiana, and the Warsaw Conservatory of Music in Warsaw, Poland.

An experienced performer and teacher, Ken has served with Canada’s National Youth Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (as concertmaster), the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as soloist with the U of A Symphony and the Prince George Symphony. In addition he was leader of the Haydn String Quartet. Ken has served on the teaching staff of the Camrose Summer School for Strings, the Provincial Summer Strings Academy at the University of Calgary and at Mount Royal College, and as a faculty member of the Valhalla Summer School of Music. Ken was instrumental in the establishment, administration, and teaching of the Prince George School District Suzuki String Music Program. In addition to first-prize winners as soloists and chamber musicians in local and Provincial competition, his students include a Royal Conservatory gold medalist (A.R.C.T.), prize winners at Canada’s National Music Festival in Solo Strings, as well as first-prize winners of the Vancouver Sr. Secondary Competition (strings ) and National level of the Canadian Music Competition. His students have been featured as soloists with Okanagan Symphony, Orchestra Okanagan, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and the Mozart Festival Orchestra.

A dedicated violin teacher for nearly five decades, and certified Registered Music Teacher in the province of B.C., Ken enjoys a full complement of students from throughout the Okanagan and surrounding area. Ken's passion is to provide the dream as well as practical skills and training needed to develop and encourage young musicians. As an adjudicator, Ken enjoys the privilege of sharing that passion with students at festivals throughout Western Canada.

Brian Mix has been a freelance cellist in Vancouver since 1992, enjoying a career that encompasses nearly all aspects of music-making. He frequently performs with the Vancouver Symphony and has also played with the CBC Radio Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, the National Ballet, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, the Turning Point Ensemble, the NOW Improvisatory Orchestra, and many other professional ensembles. He has appeared as soloist with the Vancouver Philharmonic and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestras, has recorded for CBC records, film soundtracks, CDs of pop, rock, folk, and children’s artists, and has even appeared on stage with the rock groups Yes and the Moody Blues. Other notable performances include the complete cycle of Bach’s Cello Suites, a tour of Taiwan with the Vancouver/Boston-based Adymus Piano Trio, several years as cellist of the Pacific Rim String Quartet, and numerous concerts on the American east coast with the International Musical Arts Chamber Music Festival. Alongside performing, Brian teaches cello, is an RCM Examiner, writes program notes, gives pre-concert talks, and conducts. Music festivals Brian has adjudicated include Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Kelowna, and the Alberta Provincial Festival.

Brian began playing the cello at the age of ten as a student in the Edmonton Public Schools string program. He continued his studies at the University of British Columbia with Eric Wilson, founding cellist of the Emerson String Quartet, from which he received both Bachelor and Masters degrees in cello performance. Further studies included a year at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa with NAC principal cellist Donald Whitton, summer studies at the University of Cincinnati, chamber music at the University of Ottawa, and

two residencies at the Banff Centre. Other musicians with whom Brian has studied include Eric Rosenblith, Hans Jorgen Jensen, Antonio Lysy, Jaap ter Linden, Phoebe Carrai, Antonio Meneses, Laurence Lesser, and Tom Rolston. Alongside his music career, Brian also holds a law degree from the University of British Columbia.

Nancy Hermiston, Vancouver, BCIntermediate & Senior Classical Voice

Nancy Hermiston’s operatic career has taken her throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Her New York debut took place in Carnegie Hall with Marilyn Horne and Mario Bernardi. Her European début led to a permanent engagement with the prestigious Nürnberg Opera. She has held numerous appointments as voice teacher, and as stage director at the Meistersinger Konservatorium, Nürnberg, and the University of Toronto Opera and Performance Divisions. She was appointed to the UBC faculty in 1995 as Coordinator of the Voice and Opera Division.

In 2008, Professor Hermiston was the recipient of the Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance and Development in the Visual and Performing Arts and in the 2009/2010 academic year received a Killam Teaching Prize.

Hermiston is chair of the School of Music’s Voice and Opera Divisions and also serves as University Marshal. In 2014, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her achievements as an opera singer, stage director and educator.

Rebecca Paulding, Chilliwack, BCJunior Voice

Rebecca Paulding holds a Bachelor and Masters of Music in Opera Performance from the University of British Columbia, as well as an ARCT in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is a provincial winner in voice, a medalist with RCM, and a winner of several provincial voice awards for her performances of Canadian Music. For the past two years, she has been in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she has been an instructor for the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, and for the Manitoba Conservatory. More recently, Rebecca has returned to her home in the Fraser Valley, where she enjoys teaching voice and piano, and seeks to encourage an appreciation and love for music in students of all ages!

In addition to teaching classical voice, musical theatre, and piano, Rebecca is an active performer. Operatic performances have been with UBC Opera, Opera Nuova, Manitoba Opera, and Little Opera Company of Winnipeg. Favorite roles include Rusulka in Rusulka, Musetta in La boheme, Marguerite in Louis Riel, and Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring. She has been a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony, as part of their Traditional Christmas Concert Series, and with Fraser Valley Philharmonic's Mostly Mozart Concerts. This summer, Rebecca will travel to Italy to sing the role of Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tuttewith AEDO.

Rebecca has studied with Paula Quick, Ingrid Suderman, Nancy Hermiston and Monica Huisman.

Peter Jorgensen, New Westminster, BCIntermediate & Senior Musical Theatre Contemporary/Voice

Peter Jorgensen is a Vancouver based actor, singer, director, writer, choreographer, instructor and general musical theatre aficionado.

After graduating from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, Peter went on to perform in various off-Broadway productions such as That’s Life, Magic to Do: the Songs of Stephen Schwartz, the world premiere of Number the Stars, and the title role in Young Moses.

Since returning to Vancouver he has appeared in the Arts Club Theatre productions of Beauty and the Beast, Dirty Blonde, Dial M…for Murder, Dames at Sea, Forever Plaid, and She Loves Me (for which he received a Jessie Nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor). At The Richmond Gateway Theatre he has appeared in Guys and Dolls, Leading Ladies, Lend Me a Tenor, Dads: the Musical, and Forever Plaid (Jessie Award: Outstanding Ensemble Performance). He has also appeared as the title role in Don Juan with Blackbird Theatre at Bard on the Beach in Cymbeline; at The Vancouver Playhouse in No Great Mischief; and with Carousel Theatre he starred as George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life (Jessie Nomination: Outstanding Performance). He appeared as Josh Baskin in big: the musical for Theatre Under the Stars and for Royal City Musical Theatre he appeared as Harold Hill in the The Music Man and Julian Marsh in 42nd Street. Other favourite shows include Lies and Legends: the Musical Stories of Harry

Chapin (Belfry Theatre), Godspell,(Uncle Randy Productions), and My Fair Lady in which he starred as Henry Higgins for Western Canada Theatre.

As a writer he has collaborated on the book and lyrics for the new musical Abracadabra, written and produced his own one-man cabaret To Broadway and Back (Jessie Nomination: Outstanding Original Script), wrote a new adaptation of Offenbach's Orphee aux Enfers entitled Offenbach's ORPHEUS: Gone to Hell! and has written original songs for various other theatrical productions.

Recent directing/choreography credits include a record setting run of Avenue Q for the Arts Club Theatre Company, Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, and Fiddler on the Roof (Chemainus Theatre), Little Shop of Horrors (Persephone Theatre), The Emperor of Atlantis (City Opera), Some Enchanted Evening for the Kay Meek Centre, and Love in Public (SFU). Other favourite directing credits include You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown for Blockhead Productions, Bye, Bye Birdie (Ovation Award: Outstanding Direction of a Musical and CTC Award: Best Choreogrpaher) for Footlight Theatre, The Baker’s Wife for Applause! Musicals in Concert (attended by composer, Stephen Schwartz), as well as Vocal Direction and Choreography for Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill for the Tin Can Collective.

Currently Peter is an Artistic Producer with Patrick Street Productions - a theatre company he founded with his wife, Katey Wright. Their inaugural productions of Into the Woods was a critically acclaimed hit that earned him a Jessie Award nomination for direction. Their next production, The Full Monty, was a smash hit that was picked up by Persephone Theatre for a remount in the spring of 2010, followed with the cult hit Bat Boy: the Musical. Their most recent production,The Light in the Piazza, won a host of awards including the 2011 Ovation Award for Outstanding Professional Musical and the 2012 Jessie award for Outstanding Production (Large Theatre) before going on to a successful remount, again at Persephone Theatre.

Upcoming Peter will be directing his own adaptation of It's a Wonderful Life for the Chemainus Theatre Festival, Grease for Studio 58, Rodgers & Hammerstein: Out of a Dream and Floyd Collins for Patrick Street Productions and then returning to Chemainus to direct Les Miserables.

Off-stage, Peter is a private voice instructor, Program Director of The Arts Club Theatre’s Summer Musical Theatre Intensive, and a member of Theatre Cares Vancouver. He shares his life with his wife, actress Katey Wright, son Lukas, and crazy dogs Tug and Lady in New Westminster

Paula Pang, Calgary, ABChinese Instruments

Paula Pang is a guzheng performer and teacher. She is a member of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. Paula began piano studies young and began guzheng studies during university. Her guzheng teachers include Mr. Chun Bo SO and Ms. See-Wah HON. Paula is Vice President and resident guzheng instructor for the Calgary Chinese Music Development Association, a non-profit organization which promotes Chinese music. She is the principal and guzheng player of the CCMDA orchestra.

Paula teaches guzheng and hu-lo-si (a wind instrument) at the Continuing Education Program at the University of Calgary. She is a guzheng teacher at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre and also has her own private guzheng studio. She is an in-demand music teacher for both private and group lessons for students of all ages. Her students have won numerous awards and honour, including an invitation to perform with Ms. Ngar-si Choi’s students at the Hong Kong City Hall on July 26, 2013.

In addition to her busy teaching schedule, Paula is a frequent guest lecturer at universities, libraries and various other organizations. She was invited by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra to perform the guzheng part of the “Waterfall” concerts on October 16 & 17, 2009.

Dr. Larry Nickel, Vancouver, BCComposition

Dr. Larry Nickel is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre and an active choral clinician, adjudicator, teacher and music minister. He directs the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble and owns Cypress Choral Music Publishing, which currently promotes the music of 92 Canadian composers. Larry sang professionally with the Vancouver Chamber Choir (2007-2013)

Larry was a high school performing arts teacher for 25 years. He directed over 50 stage productions, including Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. In 1993 he won the International Association of Jazz Educators award for "outstanding service to jazz education." His choirs were selected two years in a row, 2001 and 2002, by Varsity Vocals' international search for the “Best of High School Choirs”.

In 2003 Larry took a leave from teaching to complete a DMA in composition. Requiem for Peace, his doctoral thesis, is an extensive work for chorus and symphony orchestra in 13 languages – premiered by 330 musicians in 2005. In 2007, Bruce Pullan directed the work at the Orpheum Theatre with the Vancouver Bach Choir and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Jon Washburn (Vancouver Chamber Choir) premiered the new chamber version at the Chan Centre in November 2011. Since then, Requiem for Peace has received many performances; Toronto, Halifax, Guelph, Örebro, Magdeburg, Speinshart, Regensburg, Nördlingen, Bayreuth, etc. Larry and Tony Funk founded the West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir in 1990. This choir recorded 13 CDs, featuring luminaries like Edith Wiens and Ben Heppner and including 120 of Larry’s compositions. CD sales garnered nearly a million dollars for the Communitas Supportive Care Society. Larry has ten publishers including Shawnee Press, Pavane, Oxford University Press and G. Schirmer Publishing.

Adjudicators

Ethereal, beautiful, ornate, intimidating. Those adjectives are often employed when describing the harp, but Vancouver-via-Winnipeg harpist Janelle Nadeau proves that the harp is not only an accessible instrument but a thrillingly versatile one.

Nadeau, who plays the Celtic and electric harp, graduated from the prestigious Harp Performance Program at the University of British Columbia in 2008. She has spent the better half of a decade touring across Western Canada with the acclaimed Celtic, medieval, and classical music group Winter Harp. She’s performed with Vancouver Opera and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra - even backing Kanye West during a Vancouver performance.

From big soft-seater concert halls to palliative care homes, Nadeau’s stirring music has captured the hearts of many. Her work with Health Arts Society - which recognizes the healing power of music - is a particular point of pride; she’s performed 200 concerts in care homes and hospitals.

Her debut album, These Roads, released in 2014, serves as a showpiece for the her estimable classical training as well as her finely honed pop sensibility.

Janelle Nadeau, Vancouver, BCHarp

Clyde Mitchell is Music Director of Lions Gate Sinfonia, a professional Chamber Orchestra in North Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a former winner of the Canada Council's HeinzUnger Award, awarded to "Canada's Most Promising Conductor." Previously held positions include Associate Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony, Music Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, the Georgian Bay, Huronia, and Hamilton Symphonies, and Wilfrid Laurier University. His training as a conductor includes a Masterof Music from California State University in Long Beach, and an Artist Diploma from theUniversity of Southern California.

Clyde originally trained as a French Horn player, earning a B. Mus. from Louisiana State University and Master of Arts from Cal. State University, Northridge. Prior to pursuing conducting, Clyde enjoyed a successful career as Principal Horn of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Colombia in Bogotá, the Tucson Symphony in Arizona, and Associate Principal Horn of the prestigious Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, when he also taught French Horn, Chamber Music, and Brass Choir at McGill University.

Clyde Mitchell's active guest conducting schedule has taken him to Canada's top orchestras: the Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton symphonies, the National ArtsCentre and CBC Orchestras. Recent guest conducting appearances include the Houston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Jacksonville (FL) Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and the Canadian Opera Company, as well as orchestras in Romania, Czech Republic, and Japan. An enthusiastic advocate for music education, Clyde has conducted Honour Orchestras and Bands in British Columbia, Ontario,California, Colorado, Washington, and Pennsylvania.

Clyde often works as Guest Host for TV and Radio broadcasts, where he enjoys talking about music and taking listener requests! He is the host for the Classical Music television show “Masterworks” on BC's Public Television Station, The Knowledge Network, and has served as Guest Host for CBC Radio’s listener request show “As You Like It.”

Clyde is married to Sarah Jackson, piccolo and flute player with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and he now divides his time between B.C. and Southern California.
