The Society of Historians website ( http://blog.dnevnik.hr/drustvopovjesni- cara) lists all events since its establish- ment on June 4, 2009. The first issue of the journal is also featured on HRČAK – portal of Croatian scientific journals ( http://hrcak.srce.hr/historiavarasdiensis ), with the following description of the journal: “The journal Historia Varasdi- ensis – Journal for the History of Varaždin is published by The Society of Historians of Varaždin and the Varaždin County with the goal of promoting and im- proving our knowledge of the cultural- historical heritage of Varaždin and the Varaždin County. The Editorial board intends to consider various scientific areas, such as history, history of art, ar- chaeology, ethnology, geography and other humanistic sciences thematically related to Varaždin and the Varaždin County. Through scientific and profes- sional papers, bibliographies and book reviews, interviews, archive material translations and information on activ- ities of the Society and other events in Varaždin and the Varaždin County re- lated to historical and other humanistic sciences, the journal enables exchange of ideas and new knowledge, as well as promoting new views of the history of Varaždin and surrounding areas and accepting the trend of expanding his- torical perspective and opening the sci- ence of history to new themes, which corresponds to changes in contempor- ary historiography and increasing in- terdisciplinary transdisciplinary direc- tion in social-humanistic sciences. By advocating a multidisciplinary appro- ach, we would like to stimulate research and a critical dialogue about various themes related to cultural, economic and social aspects of the development of Varaždin and its region such as his- tory of women, history of work, eco- history, history of everyday life and other themes associated with ideas of contemporary historiography.” I would like to single out from the first issue an overview by Vladimir Huzjan and Ivan Obadić: Lectures of the Society of Historians from 2009 to 2010, two of which are related to cartography: September 24, 2009, Prof. Dr. Mijo Ko- rade: Ferdinand Konščak – Founder of California September 30, 2010, Miroslav Klemm, Prof.: Historical Plans of Varaždin from the 16th to 19th Century . A description of the lecture by Miroslav Klemm follows: “On September 30, Miroslav Klemm treated the Varažd- in audience with a remarkable lecture titled Historical Plans of Varaždin from the 16th to the 19th Century . He commented on the most famous plans by Daniel Speck- lin, Martin Stier, Andreas Kneidinger and other authors, explaining the city de- velopment of Varaždin through several centuries. The author selected 13 exam- ples for his lecture. The most important examples for understanding the devel- opment of Varaždin are plans and views produced between the 16th and the 19th century. They are kept in the General Land Archive in Karlsruhe, Austrian Na- tional Library in Vienna, Military Mu- seum in Vienna, Croatian State Archive in Zagreb and the Varaždin City Mu- seum. They are plans by Daniel Specklin from 1578, Martin Stier from 1660, P. C. Donato from 1672, unknown author from around 1715, Andreas Leopold Kneidinger from 1766, Ignatius Beysch- lag from 1807 and Anton Kieswetter from 1860. There are also views by Jo- hannes Ledentu from 1639, Mathias Anton Weiss from 1729, Sigismund Kopp from 1732 and unknown author from 1780. These examples represented the development of Varaždin with its medi- eval centre, trenches, walls, bastions and two city gates, which were constructed to defend against Turks in the 16th cen- tury. The city expanded in the 18th cen- tury, which led to breaking through city walls in some places, and all fortresses were destroyed in 1807.
