Little Black Dress: From Mourning to NightNow through September 5 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park at Lindell and DeBaliviere

Today the Little Black Dress—a simple, short cocktail dress—is a must have staple for most women. Prior to the early 20th century, the simple, unadorned black garment was limited to mourning, and strict social rules regarding the appropriate mourning dress were rigidly observed.

Influential French designer Coco Chanel revolutionized fashion by introduc-ing the versatile, affordable, accessible garment. Today, the wearing of black at funerals may still be observed but the little black dress has branched out. It isn’t uncommon to see black at weddings on either the bride or bride’s maids. The social rules have changed and what was once scandalous to earlier generations no longer holds sway. Thank you, Holly Golightly!

Featuring over 60 dresses from the Missouri History Museum’s world-renowned textile collection, the exhibit explores the subject of mourning, as well as the transition of black from a symbol of grief to a symbol of high fashion. On display with the dresses are fascinating artifacts—from hair jewelry to tear catchers—that were once a regular part of the mourning process. Today’s accessories for that LBD are more likely to be the perfect heels and that strand of pearls.

The Missouri History Museum has planned several related events to accom-pany this exhibition. You can “Take a Look Inside Coco Channel” or attend “Fashion Fun Day” or have a “A Conversation with Local STL Fashion Design-ers”. You even have the opportunity to design your own little black dress.

Admission to this exhibition is free. For complete information about the exhibition and the Missouri History Museum please visit them on the web at mohistory.com then click on Exhibits / Current.

What more can we say about bacon? Even vegetarians fall prey to its temptations at times. But for an ingredient so beloved, people muck it up way too often. We’re talking limp bacon. Burnt bacon. Soggy bacon. Bacon treated in ways unbecoming of the fine, fine ingredient it is.

Here’s how to avoid these classic bacon blunders.

1. Unevenly cooked bacon.Don’t you hate when half a slice of bacon is burnt to a crisp, but the other is floppy and undercooked? Try baking it in the oven instead of frying it to oblivion. This might be the easiest way to make perfect bacon: Just place the slices in a single layer on a baking tray, rev the oven to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and bake for about 20 minutes. (You could also try brushing it with some maple syrup at the end. Just sayin’.)

2. Burnt bacon. Some people like their bacon slightly burned, but personally we don’t share that sentiment. To avoid burning, remember this credo: slow and steady wins the race. If you’re frying your bacon, that means setting your skillet over medium or medium-high heat and no higher. And don’t start with cold bacon; let it warm to room temperature, which helps the fat render more quickly.

3. Floppy bacon.Quit crowding your bacon! Doing that prevents the glorious strips from crisping up, which means gross, floppy, gross ba-con. (Did we mention gross?) Seriously, give the slabs some breathing room.

4. Soggy BaconBacon is great and all, but that bilious, oily residue that slicks your throat afterward is totally not. Your bacon is soggy be-cause you’re not cooking it long enough. Sure, burned bacon is awful. But isn’t soggy bacon worse? Give it some time to crisp up!

5. Weirdly thin bacon. Why settle for sickly little strips of anemic bacon when you can have thick, meaty slabs of salty, beauteous baconitude? Ditch the standard grocery store variety for thick-cut bacon. Your taste buds will thank you.

Follow these rules, and you’ll practically be a pro.

We always hear tip-based stories about clever ways to cut your spending, but many of them come with a lifestyle change to which you might not be ready to commit. Such as: Growing your own vegetables, cutting your own hair and nixing the occasional latte that makes you feel more human during a difficult workweek. However, there are a bunch of painless changes you can make that can help you save more. If you’re up the creek without a paddle, these won’t help you too much. But if you’ve ever looked at your bank statement and thought “I could do better,” then this is for you.

Adjust Your ThermostatUnless you get hit with a polar vortex, you probably won’t notice a change of a few degrees. You should also lower your thermostat a few degrees before you leave the house and before you go to bed.

Turn Everything Off When You Leave Your HouseIf you’re convinced that a TV blasting “The People’s Court” and having a light in front of a window is what keeps you robbery-free, use a power strip with a timer.

Run Your Appliances At The Right TimeIf your utility company defines “peak” and “off-peak” hours, you’re probably spending more to run appliances during the former. Instead, shift your usage to “off-peak” hours. Don’t know what’s what? Ask your utility company.

Plan Your Meals Ahead Of TimeIf you head into a grocery store with no real idea of what you’re looking for, you’ll end up with a cart full of novelty ice cream products and frozen pizzas. At least that’s what we assume when we see our college-age neighbors out shopping. Have a hard time getting organized? Try this printable grocery planners from Design*Sponge, that kind of forces you to plan the week’s meals before you list groceries.

Compare The Right PricesAt the grocery store, you should always look at the unit price sticker when trying to decide between two items. The price of the best option might be higher, but gives you more for your money.

Use The Crock-Pot Your Mom Gave To YouAt the end of a long day, takeout just feels necessary. But if you get into the habit of oc-casionally throwing a few chicken breasts into a Crock Pot, along with a little bit of stock (from a box) before you go to work...dinner is just about ready once you come home. Clueless about where to start? Here are 77 slow cooker recipes to get you started.

Buy The Right Things In BulkEventually, trash bags will go on sale -- that’s when you stock up. Same for things like deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. You spend a little bit more now, but save in the long run.

Check Your Air Pressure Once In A WhileYou’d be surprised at how many people don’t do this. Making sure your tires are properly inflated helps with gas mileage. The inside of your door usually has the ideal PSI (that’s pounds per square inch), which will guide you as you’re filling your tires at any gas station. Urbanites and/or public transportation devotees: Take advantage of any pre-tax commuter discount your job may offer you.

Know What’s In Your ClosetGoing through your clothing is a minor time investment, but it pays off when you realize that you keep buying plain black t-shirts when you already have enough of them to keep Ricky Gervais clothed for months. Knowing what you already have not only keeps you from spending more, but it gives you an opportunity to weed out the stuff that you’re not wearing, so you can donate, consign or eBay.

Dollar factsIt weighs only 0.035 oz (1 gram), is only 16 square inches (0.01m²) in size and consists of cotton and linen but those who do not have it would like to have it and those who have it would like to have more of it. It is the world’s most popular currency: the United States dollar.

$1 Bills: The United States one-dollar bill is the most common denomination of US cur-rency, totaling 45% of all bills ($1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100) pro duced. There are about 2 billion $1 bills in circulation.

Like all United States money, the $1 note is produced by the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of En-graving and Printing (with the aptly named web address, moneyfactory) in Washington, D.C. and Fort Worth, Texas; they are delivered wrapped in blue straps and has a life span of approximately 5.9 years. The $1 bill features the portrait of President George Washington.

$2 Bills: The $2 bill was discontinued in 1966, but was reintroduced in 1976. Between 1% and 2% of all notes currently produced are $2 bills. They are less used thus it is no surprise that a $2 note lasts up to 15 years. $2 bills are delivered in green straps. President Thomas Jefferson is featured on the $2 bill.

$5 Bills: Approximately 9% of all United States paper notes are $5 bills. Delivered in red straps, they have an average circulation life of 4.9 years before they are replaced due to wear. The $5 bill features President Abraham Lincoln, who served as the 16th President of the United States, from March 1861 until his assassination by the well-known actor John Wilkes Booth in April 1865.

$10 Bills: Up to 11% of all newly printed U.S. banknotes are $10 bills, delivered in yellow straps. A $10 note is in circulation for about 4.2 years before it is replaced due to wear. The first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, is featured on the $10 bill. He is the only person featured on U.S. currency who was not born in the continental United States – he was born in the West Indies. His portrait also is the only one that faces to the left on U.S. paper currency in circulation.

$20 Bills: Approximately 22% of all notes printed are $20 bills. They are delivered in vio-let straps and have a life span of 7.7 years. The $20 bill is known as “the jackson” because it features the portrait of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States (1829–1837).

$50 Bills: Approximately 5% of all notes are $50 bills, which are delivered in brown straps. A $50 note is in circulation for about 3.7 years before it is replaced due to wear. The 18th President of the United States (1869–1877), Ulysses S. Grant, is featured on the $50 bill.

$100 Bills: Approximately 7% of all U.S. notes produced are $100 bills. There are an estimated 9 billion $100 notes in circulation. They make up more than 80% of the value of all U.S. currency in circulation. They also are the notes that overseas people mostly want. Roughly two-thirds of all $100 bills are held outside the United States. The average life span of a $100 bill is 15 years before it is replaced due to wear and tear.

While printed by the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing, most of $100 bills are distributed by the Federal Reserve Cash Office in New York City. According to a NY Fed report (PDF), a typical foreign shipment is a pallet containing 640,000 such notes ($64 million), in bundles bound in mustard-colored straps.

The $100 bill is referred to as a “benjamin” because it features the portrait of Benjamin Fanklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. It is one of the two notes that does not feature a President of the United States; the other is the $10 bill, featuring Alexander Hamilton.

The $100 bill is also called a “C-Note”, based on the Roman numeral for 100.new design of the $100 bill, affecting as much as $110 billion worth of paper and cost-ing the taxpayers 12 cents apiece, or $120 million. According to Wikipedia –
