GROWING THE ECONOMYIMPROVING SHEEP PRODUCTIVITYFocus Genetics

Focus Genetics and Massey aim to show how selecting the ram with the right genes improves the productivity and profit of the flock.

The work is based at Mt Herbert Station in Hawke’s Bay and Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre’s Glenside Station and involves two teams of rams – one of high breeding value for live weight, and one of low breeding value for live weight – and over 1000 mixed-age ewes.

The lambs born are DNA tested for parentage then weighted at and after weaning. The differences in live weights are compared for the high versus low ram breeding values.

Groups of farmer are working closely with the researchers at each farm to provide and exchange knowledge about sheep genetics and ewe and lamb performance.

PRECISION AGRICULTURE IN THE HIGH COUNTRYPrimary Growth Partnership

Massey researchers have the latest imaging tool for remote sensing New Zealand’s high country and informing land management.

The $500,000, Fenix hyper spectral imaging system was bought (from Finnish Company Specim). It is installed on an aircraft and flown over land to gather images from more than 450 wave bands including visible, near, short and infra-red. Maps of farms are developed featuring: pasture quality, nutrient content and concentration, land surface temperatures, areas of poor drainage and nutrient movements on slopes into sinks.

The work is part of a seven year project funded by the Ministry of Primary Industries and Ravensdown and is anticipated to underpin wider economic and enviornmental sustainability in New Zealand’s high country.

INDONESIANS LEARN ABOUT DAIRY FARMINGFonterra

Indonesian dairy farmers learn about cow health and pasture growth at Massey University in Palmerston North.

The farmers and government advisors visit New Zealand as part of the Fonterra Dairy Farming Scholarship Programme.

While Indonesia has just two seasons (wet and dry) and tends to smaller farms and herds than in New Zealand there is much general knowledge of relevance to their dairying. Efficient farming systems, reproduction, animal welfare, feed quality and business management are some of the areas covered in the programme.

Professor of Dairy Production Systems Danny Donaghy says the programme is a great example of how New Zealand education providers and industry partners can work together to deliver Kiwi farming knowledge to help feed the world.

INSIGHT TO DAIRY FORECASTINGNZX

Two online tools designed to provide better insights into New Zealand milk production and farmgate milk prices have been developed by NZX Agri and Massey.

The project, supported with funding from Callaghan Innovation, helps provide good information to support business decision-making in the dairy sector.

The Milk Production Predictor is aimed at the global dairy market particpants for whom a better understanding of future levels of New Zealand milk production is vital. The tool predicts New Zealand milk production over the next three months by using advanced modelling.

The Farmgate Milk Price calculator is designed to help farmers understand better the relationship between GlobalDairyTrade prices and their milk solids payout. The calculator means there’s no more waiting to understand how the latest GDT auction price affects New Zealand farmers.

UV START UP ATTRACTS GLOBAL ATTENTIONBioLumic

Massey start up company, Biolumic, is in talks with international agri-technology companies following an invitation to present at the Ag Innovation Showcase in St Louis, USA. The Palmerston North-based company provides the agriculture and horticulture industries with scientifically proven recipes of UV light combined with UV devices to apply treatments of benefit to plants.

BioLumic uses a unique scientific understanding of UV light and plant science and focuses on critical components of crop production in the development of treatments. BioLumic’s UV light treatments make for hardier and more productive crops. Commercial trials have demonstrated increases in crop yields, plant quality and disease resistance. BioLumic is also developing UV treatments to enhance algal

cultures for increased biomass purity.

INCREASING RELIABILITY OF MANUKA HONEYPrimary Growth Partnership

Increasing the yield and reliability of medical grade manuka honey is the aim of research funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries, through the Primary Growth Partnership programme with manuka honey industry co-investors. Medical manuka honey is used to treat wound infections and a reliable supply is needed.

Massey University is helping Manuka Research Partnership (NZ) Ltd understand how to choose the best mix of available manuka cultivars for planting in any New Zealand setting and how best to grow them. It’s also important that the plantation flowers over an extended time, producing nectar that contains high concentrations of dihydroxyacetone and is attractive to honeybees.

The programme also aims to improve the hill country with manuka plantings to minimise erosion and improve water quality.

BETTER PACKAGING FOR EXPORTGovernment-funded Project for Industry

Food packaging helps protect food from damage in many ways including prevention of compression and improving temperature control. Massey researchers are working with industry on a government-funded project to improve packaging for export products. They are producing computer models that inform packaging design and enable optimsation of packaging for better product quality. Future exports will benefit with improved performance, resulting in fewer product losses and lower costs.

MORE VALUE FROM BEEFPrimary Growth Partnership

ANZCO worked with Massey’s FoodPilot to develop new higher value uses for some red meat parts. The work was part of the FoodPlus programme and funded by ANZCO and the Ministry of Primary Industries through the Primary Growth Partnership.

The FoodPilot facilities were used to test processes at a small commercial scale to optimise the effectiveness of operations. ANZCO assessed how the equipment handled a range of high fat, high solids materials before investing capital of its own.

Commercially processed material was produced for market research by ANZCO customers, an important step in assuring the delivery of consistent quality product. Guidance was also given in meeting international market regulations of nutritional products and the development of a Risk Management Plan for meat ingredients, essential for export. G
