Gir Kesar Mango is the well-known mango variety of Gujarat particularly Junagadh region. The variety was named Kesar on bases of saffron color of the fruit pulp. The tree is of medium height with vigorous. Fruit is oblong, weighing 250-300 g with small beak. Skin is medium thick about 13% of total fruit weight. The color of the fruit is deep green during fruit development stage and than

turns to yellow with pink spot on shoulder. Pulp is of saffron color, fibreless and some what hard. The pulp weight is 69

% of the fruit. The stone is flat with 18 % of total fruit weight. The juice is semi solid, very sweet, testy with good flavored. The fruits are matured during April-May. The keeping quality of the fruit is 15-20 days. The biochemical parameters:

TSS (18-22 oB) Acidity (0.25-0.27%) Vitamin A (42.0 IU) Vitamin-C (42-48 mg/100 g) Total sugar (12-13%) etc.

The Gir Kesar mango has distinctive and naturally occurring orgeanoleptic characteristics of taste, aroma, pulp color and sweetness. The sugar/ acid blend is excellent. The fruit is suitable for table purpose also. The keeping quality of the fruit is also good. Its average yield is 150-200 kg per tree.

(G) Description of Goods : Gir Kesar Mango is named on bases of saffron color of the fruit pulp. The tree is of medium height. Fruit is oblong, weighing 250-300 grams with small beak. It has also distinctive and naturally occurring orgeanoleptic characteristics of taste, aroma, pulp color and sweetness. The sugar / acid blend is excellent.

The tree of Gir Kesar mango is hard, single stemmed, slow growing, evergreen canopy and it has a generally spreading habit. The age of Gir Kesar mango tree is long lasting as long as 200-300 years which are still capable of fruit production in deep soil conditions where the taproot descends up to the depth of 20 ft and widely spread roots system. The tree may gain the height of 50 feet up. The mango graft takes 3-4 years to start in bearing. It is regular bearer and so bears the fruits every year. The Gir Kesar mango have also higher yield potentiality as compared to other varieties. It contains good physico-chemical properties like size, shape, colour of the skin as well as pulp, test, flavour, TSS, acidity, Vitamin-A, Vitamin-C and sugar. For that reason, it has its great utility and occupied a pre-eminent place.

The above said characteristics including pulp colour and flavour of Gir Kesar Mango are rare and unique and it is the result of combination of plant genes, soil strata & chemistry, elevations, climatic parameters like temperature, humidity, sunshine & rainfall of the region. The agro techniques are also developed by the scientists to sustain growth, flowering, fruit yield and quality of fruits. The steps are also taken against biotic and abiotic stress and burning/chronic problems of the crop. The Gir Kesar mango yields up to 150 to 200 kg/tree in a year gives an idea of the extend of human effort involved in its production.

Gir Kesar Mango is cultivated in the area of Junagadh district particularly Gir territory including Gir Sanctuary and National Park and other adjoining tehsils like Dhari and Khambha of Amreli district near to Gir territory.

Junagadh district lies between 20˚ 44' North to 21˚ 40’ North latitude and 69˚ 40' East to 71˚ 50’East longitude.

Amreli district lies between 20˚ 45' East 22˚ 25’East Longitude and 70˚ 30' North 71˚ 75’ North Latitude.

(I) Proof of Origin (Historical records) :

Gir Kesar Mango originated from Sorath region of Gujarat. The variety was first time identified by the farmer named Shalebhai at his farm in Mangrol town of Junagadh of Sorath State. Junagadh state during 1851 to 1882. Shalebhai presented the fruits to Nawab Mohabatkhan II of Junagadh state alongwith his darbar and other people opinioned that the said fruit was very sweet, flavored, fibreless with flat stone. The fruit was excellent than the fruits of other tree. So it was first appreciated by Nawab Mohabatkhan II of Junagadh state and he had given the name as “Salebhai ni Ambadi”. Shalebhai was the farmer of Mangrol of Junagadh district during period of Nawab Mohabatkhan II (Bija). Naturally fallen fruits known as shankh were first tested by Shalebhai, he experienced better. Than he presented the fruits to Nawab Mohabatkhan second of Junagadh state who have tested organoleptically with his Darbars and others peoples and opinioned that the said fruit was very sweet, flavored, fibreless with flat stone. The fruit was excellent than the fruits of other tree. So it was first appreciated by Nawab Mohabatkhan second of Junagadh state and he had given the name as “Sale bhai ni ambadi”. Nawab had organized to prepare the grafts from said mother tree and planted to adjoining area of the region. The variety Salebhai ni Ambadi was also planted in Chorwad of Mangrol region by Shri Harprashad Udayshankar Desai, Deewan of Junagadh state during 1887 to 1909.

During the period of Nawab Mohabatkhan III (Trija) in 1920 to 1947, Shri A. S. K. Ayengar was the Garden Superintendent of Junagadh State. He had evaluated the Salebhai ni Ambadi scientifically and noted the visual changes obtained in the fruits of said variety like shape, skin color and change in pulp color with reduced length of beak. They found saffron colored pulp and for that reason, he gave the name Kesar instead of Salebhai ni Ambadi. He had planted the grafts of variety Kesar to Girnar Taleti known as Ambvan of Dhudheswar plantation. He had also planted to Sakkar bag and Lal dhori gardens of Junagadh. These gardens are now under Junagadh Agricultural University.

The variety was also appreciated by Maharajas and their Horticulturists/ Garden Superintendents of different States of Saurashtra and planted to different farms of Rajwada of Saurashtra region. The Gir Kesar Mango was exhibited in the state as well as in the national level mango shows and received several trophies and shields.

(J) Method of Production :

The agro techniques and requirements for the cultivation standardized by the scientists are as under.

Soil and climate The mango can grow well in all types of soil, from alluvial to lateritic, except black cotton soils. However, it is also cultivated in successfully in soft rocky area of the west coast which have a good drainage capacity. For climate, it can be grow from sea level to an altitude of about 1400 m with optimum temperature ranging from 24-30 C˚. It also requires light intensity from 4000-30000 lux. It can grow in areas having average rainfall as low as 25 cm to as high as 250 cm. Wind velocity in December and February should be low. Propagation

It is vegetatively propagated by Inarching and softwood grafting. Softwood and In situ soft wood grafting method is standardized. In slight salt affected area up to 2.00 EC dSm-1 of water, the variety Kesar is also standardized using as a root stock for propagation.

Irrigation schedule 1. Normally young trees should be irrigated frequently during lean period for

quick growth. The interval between two irrigations may be 4-6 days in summer and 8-10 days in winter.

2. In case of bearing trees, irrigation should not be given after completion of monsoon and before flowering period. However, if monsoon is completed earlier or soil of orchard is sandy, only one irrigation should be applied in September. First irrigation should be given at the fruit attain the pea size stage. Second and third irrigation should be given with maintaining an interval of 20-25 days which are useful for increasing the size of fruit, fruit shape, quality of fruit as well as reduce the fruit drop. It should be stopped 20 days before harvesting which improves the post harvest quality of the fruit.

Methods of irrigation Normally in mango following methods are used. (i) Flood irrigation (ii) Basin system, and (iii) Drip irrigation. Out of them, drip irrigation system is the most important. It also increases the efficient use of soluble chemical fertilizers, which are applied through drip as a fertigation system. Water requirement through drip Normally adult tree requires 30-60 liter of water per day through four dripper per tree with four liter per hour capacity. However, it depends on the climate (location), type of soil, age of tree and cultivars. Manuring and fertilizers Non –bearing tree: The requirement of one year old plant and than up to five year is given in table

All dose of nutrients should be applied before onset of monsoon. Only additional 200 g N/pl. should be applied in February at first irrigation.

Ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) @ 50g + Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) @ 50g/tree/year should be applied in mixing with other nutrients. Addition to that, biofertilizers like Azotobactor and Phosphobactor @ 50 g./ tree is also helpful to boot up yield and quality. Apply 3000 ppm B produced desirable effects in respects of vegetative and reproductive growth.

Method of application The nutrients should be applied at 90-120 cm of periphery. It should be applied in ring formed of 30 cm width and 60-90 cm depth at above location. Foliar application of nitrogenous fertilizer in form of urea is also effective.

Pruning and training Mango is evergreen tree and fruit is borne on new season's growth and usually on the tips of the outer branches of the tree. Therefore, it is only necessary to lightly thin trees by removing weak, overcrowded or broken branches, keeping the centre of the tree open. Cut off branches which are too near the ground. Developing trees should be trained to eliminate low branches less than 2 feet from the ground, leaving three to four main branches on the trunk at different heights.

Intercropping and cover cropping Crop for inter crop The crop should be Shallow rooted and short duration vegetables, Quick growing fruit plant with a short juvenile period. Among vegetables, Onion, tomato, radish, carrot, beans, cauliflower, cabbage, palak etc. are suitable. Among fruit crops, papaya, phalsa, guava, pineapple and strawberry etc. Inter cultivation The following inter culturing operations should be followed. Plough the soil to a shallow depth at least twice a year. First in June and second in October. The tree basin must be kept free from weed round the year by shallow hoeing and hand weeding. The tree basin should also be opened or exposed after completion of monsoon.

Harvesting The major harvesting season for Gir Kesar mango is April-May. Various criteria recommended for judging maturity are Slight color changes on fruit from dark green to light green.

Development and exposure of shoulders. Development of white powder on the skin of fruit. Development of dot on the fruit. When one or two ripe fruits fall from the plant naturally. When the specific gravity of fruits attains the ranges from 1.01-1.02. The last

method is dependable. Fruits generally mature between 90-120 days from fruit set stage.

Time of harvesting Normally the fruits should be harvested during morning hours and in evening after 5.00 pm. The temperature is lower at this time which reduces the respiration rate of the fruit. If harvesting is operated during hot period (30-35o C or more), the shelf life is reduced. Method of harvesting 1. Harvested by manually operated mango picker called vedo. 2. Recently, the Ananad Agricultural University has developed the tractor

operated harvester using the hydraulic system. Yield The yield of Kesar mango reaches up to 150-200 kg/

The Gir Kesar mango orchards are located in specific areas of Junagadh region which contains ideal climatic parameters with natural soil condition suitable for cultivation. Coupled with this, the awareness of farmers with better agro techniques adapted to impart the uniqueness of characters of Kesar mango variety which has the distinctive and naturally occurring organoleptic characteristics of test, aroma, pulp colour and mouth feel which have won the patronage and recognition of discerning consumers all over the world.

Gir Kesar mangoes have distinctive and rare characters like saffron colour of the pulp with saffron flavour which are the results of several factors.

The uniqueness of Gir Kesar mango is due to Colour and taste of pulp which contains saffron colour of the pulp. It also possesses better mouth feel which have won the patronage and recognition of discerning consumers all over the country. Special Aroma developed in Gir Kesar Mango is not found in the mango of other region. The shape & shining of the fruit is also unique which is not shown in mango of other region.

1. Soils of GI area is calcareous in nature, high status of organic mater due to

forest surrounding areas, well drained soil profile benefiting to maintaining

the C/N ratio at the time of flowering initiate the floral bud differentiation earlier as compared to other region of Kesar growing.

2. The climate of GI area is semi arid type, hence, sufficient water, dry climate, mild temperature at flowering, fruit setting as well as pea & marble stage of fruit which is not available in Kutch region due to arid type of climate and in South Gujarat which has the humid type of climate.

3. Several rivers like Hiran, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Ghodavadi, Raval & Shentrunji passes from Gir forest which provide sweet water to the mango orchards through natural recharging. Irrigation water of these rivers are pure, safe rain water without any chemical pollutants. Hence, the quality of Kesar mango is good. Otherwise, it is not available to Kesar growing regions like Kutch and South Gujarat.

4. Micro climate of GI area is highly specific due to surrounding of the dense forest and undulating topography. Temperature of GI area is 4-5 degree lower during flowering period which induce the early flowering nearly15-20 days as compared to other region.

5. Coupled with this, the awareness of farmers with better agro techniques adapted to impart the uniqueness of characters of Kesar mango variety which has the distinctive and naturally occurring organoleptic characteristics of taste, aroma, pulp colour etc.

6. Moderate temperature is available in proposed GI area during fruit development stage like pea & marble stage of fruit due to surrounding of green forest which favors the lowest fruit dropping, no sun scares and minimum disease-pests which is not available in Kutch region due to arid type of climate and South Gujarat zone due to humid tropics type of climate.

7. The area is suitable for cultivation of Gir Kesar mango as 99% of the area is planted only with trees of Gir Kesar mango and it is the isolated pocket.

8. The plantation of Gir Kesar mango in GI area is without adulterations of any mango cultivars.

9. Exclusively unique marketing yard of Gir Kesar mango is available at Talala of Gir region where only Gir Kesar mango is sold and the yard remains under working condition only for three months in a year. The total selling of Gir Kesar mango from the yard is 14,870.25 tones during the last year (2010-11).

“Bhalia Wheat” is produced of the GW-1 improved variety grains which are bold, very hard and vitreous. The quality of “Bhalia Wheat” is considered to be the best. Understanding the importance of quality in every respect, great unpredicted demand has been roused by consumers/traders for Bhalia Wheat, ultimately benefiting the farmers of Bhal region by fetching higher price for this produce. Bhalia Wheat, also locally known as Daudkhani Wheat or Chasia Wheat or Katha Wheat, is especially grown under conserved soil moisture condition of Gujarat.

Wheat is the second most important staple food crop of India. The two species viz. Triticum aestivum L. (Hexaploid wheat) grown in irrigated condition and Triticum durum Desf. (Tetraploid wheat) is grown in irrigated, rainfed as well as conserved moisture conditions.

"Bhalia wheat" grains are very hard and bold with vitreous texture and desirable qualities like, high protein content, medium sedimentation value, high carotene, less yellow berry and low water absorption. These quality traits are preferable for semolina (suji) for use in pasta goods like macaroni, spaghetti, vermicelli, noodles, pizza etc. Besides, the Bhalia wheat is locally consumed in the form of "Bhakhari" and “Chapatti”. As barn is brittle and contains higher soluble sugars resulting in good quality of Bhakhari, it is common preparation for dinner and breakfast. (I) Proof of Origin (Historical records) :

There is evidence that durum wheat was cultivated in Bhal tract of Gujarat, before independence. Hence a scheme for genetic improvement on wheat for Bhal tract area was launched by the government of Bombay in 1944. Research work on dry wheat is in progress at the Agricultural Research Station, Arnej, Taluka Dholka District Ahmedabad since 1944. Prior to the start of the Research Station the variety Gulab (Bansi 244) evolved at Niphad was recommended for cultivation. Local types Lal katha, Safed katha and Punagari wheat varieties were also grown in this area. Research work on wheat was started at Tanchha district Bharuch in 1959. A research station for dry wheat was started at Dhandhuka district Ahmedabad in 1966.

The Bhal & Coastal Agro climatic Zone of Gujarat region is traditionally durum wheat growing area, with strong linkage for durum wheat for its quality. The variety of durum wheat ‘Arnej 206’ was developed through selection from ‘white katha’ local durum wheat and released in 1955. As a result of research efforts, a durum wheat variety ‘Arnej-28’ was developed through hybridization followed pedigree method of selection from a cross A-206 x NP 200 and released in 1977. Subsequently, the most popular durum wheat variety ‘Gujarat Wheat-1’ was released for commercial cultivation in 1981,developed through hybrization and back cross breeding of cross ‘(A-206 x Vishram) F1 x A-206’ It was followed by selection. The variety of Bhalia Wheat is very popular in this region due to its better grain qualities viz; low grain mottling bold and vitreous grain, amber colour of grain, higher yield resulting in better price as well as good quality with respect to its different end use products.

(J) Method of Production :

The agro techniques and requirements for the cultivation standardized are: Soils

For rain fed crop heavy to medium black, more moisture retentive soils are desirable.

Moisture Conservation In Bhal and Coastal Zone, this crop is normally grown on conserved soil moisture. It is, therefore, necessary to conserve as much soil moisture as possible in sub-surface layer (Dhada) and soil profile. For this purpose field is provided with a bund of 45-60 cm height round the field to store rain water received during monsoon.

Land Preparation

After cessation of monsoon, when the field gets proper vapsa condition it should be harrowed either by bullock drawn or tractor drawn heavy harrow. Between these two, the former is more preferable as it does not compact the soil. While harrowing the land, depth of operation should be maintained up to 7.5 cm. This operation is to be repeated 2-3 days before sowing to form a fine soil layer locally known as ‘Penh’ which acts as a soil mulch and helps to conserve moisture in subsurface layer wherein the seeds are to be placed. If the duration between first harrowing and sowing is prolonged one more intermediate operation is done to check evaporation of conserved moisture.

For improvement of wheat yield in marginal sodic soil ( ESP around 10), Gypsum @ 1 t/ha (25% of Gypsum requirement) should be applied before harrowing once in four years and mixed in soil to depth of 10 cm.

Choice of Variety

Through breeding efforts, a number of improved varieties have been released from time to time from local to A-206, A-28 and latest GW-1 (Table-2). Variety GW-1 has replaced earlier variety A-206, because of consumers’ choice, preferring least mottling and bold grains. Hence, farmers are getting premium price for GW-1 in the market.

Seeds and Sowing

Seed rate The recommended seed rate of durum wheat in conserved moisture condition is 60 kg per hectare. Seed treatment Seeds should be treated with Endosulfan (700 ml for 100 kg seed) or Chlorpyriphos (450 ml for 100 kg seeds) in 5 l of water for control of termite. Seeds coated with phosphate culture, such as Bacillus coagulans PBA-14 or Bacillus coagulans PBA-13 or Bacillus brevis PBA-12 @ 6 packets/ha containing 108 CFU/g carriers to get maximum net realization and yield.

Method of Sowing The seeds should be sown with heavy seed drill. Tractor drawn automatic seed drill can also be used for uniform seeding at even depth. Seeds should be drilled at 7.5 cm depth in the sub surface moist layer (Dhada).

Spacing

30 cm between rows is advocated.

Time of sowing The best sowing time for rain fed wheat in Bhal and Coastal Zone is from last week of October to first week of November depending upon the moisture content in the soil and prevailing temperatures of the atmosphere.

Manures and Fertilizers

Soils of this zone are low in organic carbon and available nitrogen and low to medium in available phosphorus. So, addition of manures and fertilizers to requisite quantity is needed to harvest good crop yield.

Manures Application of FYM @ 5 t/ha before onset of monsoon and thoroughly mixed with the soil helps to maintain soil fertility and to increase the yield.

Fertilizers

For obtaining higher yield, the crop should be fertilized with 20 kg nitrogen per hectare at the time of sowing. Phosphorous @ 15 kg/ha should be applied as basal in deficient soils. Results on experiments conducted at Dhandhuka indicated that wheat GW-1 responds up to 20 kg P2O5/ha if there is sufficient moisture in the sub surface layer.

Inter Cropping Intercropping of wheat + safflower in 3 : 1 row proportion at 30 cm spacing is recommended considering higher wheat equivalent yield, gross monetary returns and highest LER .

Weeding and Interculturing Weeding Lano (Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum), Nali / Hirankhuri (Convolvulus arvensis), Camel thorn - Alhagi pseudalhagi (M.Bieb.) Desv.) and Hathizad/Okharad (Chrozophora rottleri (Geis Juss) are major weeds found in the field of wheat, among which Lano and Hathizad can be effectively controlled by hand weeding. For this purpose one to two hand weeding are required. For the control of Nali, 2,4-D @ 1.0 to 1.25 kg/ha can be used as post emergence application at tillering, milking and after harvest of the crop while for camel thorn, glyphosate @ 0.4% may be used after harvest of wheat crop.

Inter culturing

The farmers of Bhal and Coastal Zone growing wheat (GW-1) follow interculturing operations maximum six times commencing from just before initiatiation of cracking (45 DAS) at an interval of 8-10 days. This helps to increase the yield by checking the moisture evaporation losses due to soil mulch development and keeping the crop field weed free. Plant Protection Pests Surface grass hopper (Aiolopus thallasinus tamulus)

Grass hopper known as horned grass hopper causes a severe damage initially at seedlings stage. Once the crop is destroyed, resowing is required. The pest is confined to wheat growing areas of Dhandhuka taluka.

The pest appears as swarms and attack on newly emerged seedlings by cutting the plants at ground level. The damage is done within short time of its field entry and remains there feeding on debris/grass and moving slowly to another field for attack. In the hot spots, the farmers are advised to undertake preventive measures by dusting Methyl parathion 2% dust @ 25 kg/ha on the bunds surrounding wheat crop, so that the pest which survives on kharif sorghum and then migrates to wheat seedlings may come in contact with insecticide and get killed before damaging wheat seedlings. It is also advised to cut kharif sorghum in time so that the adults may die due to starvation in absence of food during the period from harvest of kharif sorghum and sowing of wheat.

In case of infestation of grass hopper in the initial growth stage (seedling stage)of crop, dusting of Methyal parathion 2% or Fenvalrate 0.4 @ 25-30 kg/ha is advised for effective control .

Harvesting

Harvesting is generally performed by hand sickles when crop attains maturity. Threshing is very easy and can be done by mechanical thresher, bullock trampling or even by running a tractor. In case of labor shortage at peak harvest period, use of combined harvester could be economical.

Yield

The yield of rain fed wheat is about 8 to 10 quintals per hectare.

Storage The grains should be thoroughly dried before storage. The storage life of the grain is closely related to its moisture content. Grains with less than 10 percent moisture can be stored well. The storage pits, bins or godowns should be moisture-proof and should be fumigated to keep down the stored-grain pests including rats. Zinc phosphide is very effective against rats. Wheat grain (GW-1) after proper drying under sunlight coated with castor oil @ 500 ml/100 kg seed or mixed with dried neem leaves @ 2 kg/100 kg seeds can be stored safely in galvanized bins against lesser grain borer under Bhal condition.

(K) Uniqueness :

The best quality grain should possess high protein and medium strong gluten, low lipoxidase an enzyme which destroys the pigment during processing. Bhalia Wheat - Durum is the hardest among wheat spp., its density, combined with its high protein content and gluten strength, which make durum the wheat of choice for producing premium pasta products. Pasta made from durum is firm with consistent cooking quality. Bhalia Wheat – Durum kernels are amber-colored and larger than those of other wheat classes. Also unique to Bhalia wheat is its yellow endosperm, which gives pasta its golden hue. Such wheat gives maximum yield of semolina of uniform particle size free from specks and grit. The semolina should possess readily and give a product that is strong, clear and bright yellow in colour and which when cooked will swell to retain its shape and have firm site without becoming soft and mashy. The Bhalia wheat possesses all these characteristics. When durum wheat is milled, the endosperm is ground in to a granular product called semolina. A mixture of water and semolina forms stiff dough. Pasta dough is then forced through dies, or metal discs with holes, to create hundreds of different shapes.

"Bhalia wheat" contains very hard bold and vitreous grain texture, high protein content, high pelshanke value, medium sedimentation value, high carotene, less yellow berry and it contains maximum natural yellow pigments (due to high carotene) and low water absorption, which preferable for semolina (suji), pasta goods like macaroni, spaghetti, vermicelli, noodles, pizza etc.

The main uniqueness of Bhalia wheat is that (1) In the Bhal area, the durum wheat is grown in medium black soil and hard

layer in subsurface layer and hence rain water stagnated in surface during entire monsoon season .The Bhalia wheat is sown during end of October and first week of November.

(2) In Bhal area, durum wheat cultivation under conserved soil moisture condition is the unique in the world, where sowing is done at vapsa condition and after sowing neither irrigation is given nor rain is received though, wheat can grown successfully under such situation. The quality describe for Bhalia Wheat is develop due to such characteristics of the region. In other area where durum wheat being growing, such condition is not prevailent.

Bhalia wheat variety GW-1 is mainly grown in only Bhal and Costal zone and hence it is not possible to comparison with other durum varieties of wheat which is grown in other part of India. Even though the protein content (range 13.1 to 16,3 %) is higher than the all entries tested in Advance Varietals Trials or National Initial Varietals Trials ( ranges 10.15 to 14.01 % ) during 2008-09(Table-1). However, the quality parameter of durum wheat varieties which are grown in different part of India. The data sows that protein content (%) Grain appearance score sedimentation value (ml) thousand grain weight (gm) and thousand grain weight (gm) comparative higher in A-9-30-1 in most of the centre than other durum variety

A-9-30-1 variety is originally developed by pedigree method of selection from cross A- 206 × GAZA at Arnej centre of Gujarat. This variety released in Central Zone and recently used as a durum check for rainfed experiments under Central Zone. In the varietal evaluation programme, GW-1 variety is developed from Arnej centre and it gave higher yield and possesses good quality as compared to A-9-30-1.

General Information What is a Geographical Indication?

It is an indication, It is used to identify agricultural,natural,or manufactured goods originating in

the said area, It originates from a definite territory in India, It should have a special quality or characteristics unique to the geographical

indication. Examples of possible Geographical Indications in India: Some of the examples of Geographical Indications in India include Basmati Rice, Darjeeling Tea, Kancheepuram silk saree, Alphonso Mango, Nagpur Orange, Kolhapuri Chappal, Bikaneri Bhujia etc. What are the benefits of registration of Geographical Indications?

It confers legal protection to Geographical Indications in India, It prevents unauthorized use of a registered Geographical Indication by

others. It boosts exports of Indian Geographical indications by providing legal

Protection. It promotes economic Prosperity of Producers. It enables seeking legal protection in other WTO member countries.

Who can apply for the registration of a Geographical Indication? Any association of persons, producers, organization or authority established by or under the law can apply. The applicant must represent the interest of the producers. The application should be in writing in the prescribed form. The application should be addressed to the Registrar of Geographical Indications along with prescribed fee. Who is the Registered Proprietor of a Geographical Indication? Any association of persons, producers, organisation or authority established by or under the law can be a registered proprietor. There name should be entered in the Register of Geographical Indications as registered proprietor for the Geographical Indication applied for. Who is an authorized user? A producer of goods can apply for registration as an authorized user, with respect to a registered Geographical Indication. He should apply in writing in the prescribed form alongwith prescribed fee. Who is a producer in relation to a Geographical Indication? A producer is a person dealing with three categories of goods

Agricultural Goods including the production, processing, trading or dealing. Natural Goods including exploiting, trading or dealing. Handicrafts or industrial goods including making, manufacturing, trading or

dealing. Is registration of a Geographical Indication compulsory? While registration of Geographical indication is not compulsory, it offers better legal protection for action for infringement. What are the advantages of registering?

Registration affords better legal protection to facilitate an action for infringement.

The registered proprietor and authorized users can initiate infringement actions.

The authorized users can exercise right to use the Geographical indication. Who can use the registered Geographical Indication? Only an authorized user has the exclusive rights to use the Geographical indication in relation to goods in respect of which it is registered. How long is the registration of Geographical Indication valid? Can it be renewed? The registration of a Geographical Indication is for a period of ten years. Yes, renewal is possible for further periods of 10 years each. If a registered Geographical Indications is not renewed, it is liable tobe removed from the register. When a Registered Geographical Indication is said tobe infringed?

When unauthorized use indicates or suggests that such goods originate in a geographical area other than the true place of origin of such goods in a manner which misleads the public as to their geographical origins.

When use of Geographical Indication results in unfair competition including passing off in respect of registered Geographical indication.

When the use of another Geographical Indication results in a false representation to the public that goods originate in a territory in respect of which a Geographical Indication relates.

Who can initiate an infringement action? The registered proprietor or authorized users of a registered Geographical indication can initiate an infringement action. Can a registered Geographical Indication be assigned, transmitted etc? No, A Geographical Indication is a public property belonging to the producers of the concerned goods. It shall not be the subject matter of assignment, transmission, licensing, pledge, mortgage or such other agreement. However, when an authorized user dies, his right devolves on his successor in title. Can a registered Geographical Indication or authorized user be removed from the register? Yes, The Appellate Board or the Registrar of Geographical Indication has the power to remove the Geographical Indication or authorized user from the register. The aggrieved person can file an appeal within three months from the date of communication of the order. How a Geographical Indication differs from a trade mark? A trade mark is a sign which is used in the course of trade and it distinguishes good or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises. Whereas a Geographical Indication is used to identify goods having special Characteristics originating from a definite geographical territory.

THE REGISTRATION PROCESS

In December 1999, Parliament passed the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999. This Act seeks to provide for the registration and protection of Geographical Indications relating to goods in India. This Act is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, who is the Registrar of Geographical Indications. The Geographical Indications Registry is located at Chennai. The Registrar of Geographical Indication is divided into two parts. Part ‘A’ consists of particulars relating to registered Geographical indications and Part ‘B’ consists of particulars of the registered authorized users. The registration process is similar to both for registration of geographical indication and an authorized user which is illustrated below:
