One of the Krst town and villages inthe county to consolidate the townof Friendship is a hard pitch from I-86, but it has a history with as many footnotesas notes in a musical score.Originally called Bloody Corners or

Fightin Corners in 1805, Minnards Historyof Allegany County notes that He Kner cit-izens took oIense and oJcially named thetown Friendship on March 24, 1815.As with other settlements in this three-

county area, aMer survival the Krst course ofbusiness was lumbering, clearing the way foragriculture and dairying out of which arosecreameries and cheese factories, churches,merchants and industry, including the world-renown Friendship Dairy.In the 1870s many of the original wooden

structures were destroyed by Kres and were re-placed by brick buildings. He Kres led to theformation of a volunteer Kre departmentwhich more than 100 years later celebrates itshistory with its rebuilt steam pumper knownas Miss Daisy. Miss Daisy gained famed whenit and Friendships Main Street earned a star-ring role in a Klm sponsored by the New YorkState Library in Albany in 2012.One of the towns early claims to fame is as

the birthplace of the Republican Party. How-ever despite the fact that on May 16, 1854 theFriendship Convention was attended by A.N.Cole who became the Father of the Republi-can Party and Horace Greeley, editor of theNew York Tribune who suggested a new partywas needed for the abolition of slavery, Ripon,Wis. won the title by two months. It claimsholding a meeting in February of 1854 wherethe party was formed.Mystery, music and sport grew in Friend-

ship in the later part of the 1800s when menfrom diverse backgrounds leM their mark onnational history.Musical genius James Baxter grew up in

Friendship. In 1853, according to He Historyof Friendship, NY Sesqui-Centennial Publica-tion 1965 Baxter, who had learned to play al-most every available musical instrument,opened a studio on Main Street called the Bax-ter Music Room. By 1870 the room had be-

come Baxter University of Music boasting asmany as 150 students from 16 states, two ter-ritories and Canada. It at one time had 35 pi-anos and organs, 24 Kne musical instruments,a 200 volume library and a publishing housewith outlets in New York, Chicago, Boston andKve other large cities.Also an immigrant to Friendship was a

man whose name and religious aJliation stillevokes mystery and suspicion Sidney Rig-don. In the 1840s Rigdon was the First Assis-tant President of the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter-day Saints (the Mormons) second inrank only to Joseph Smith, one of the founders.He history of the church has it that He cameinto conLict with other church members, es-pecially Smith, and leM Nauvoo in 1844. AMerthe martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith hehurried back to Nauvoo and claimed the rightto preside as a guardian to the church. HisoIer rejected Rigdon returned to his native St.Clair, Pa. and endeavored to establish a follow-ing, maintaining that Brigham Young and theTwelve had led the church astray. As a result hewas excommunicated.AMer failing to establish his own church in

Pennsylvania, Rigdon moved to Friendshipwhere he lived out his life dying in 1876.He question has always lingered according

to long time residents, did Rigdon bring Mor-mon gold to Friendship and are members ofthe church still looking for it?In 1978, Friendships unique Octagon

House, built in 1870 was dismantled, shippedand rebuilt at the Genesee Country Museumin Mumford.He construction of the house was based on

the recommendations espoused in a book, AHome for All, or a New, Cheap, Convenientand Superior Mode of Building by OrsonFowler of Cohocton.Information from the museum states that

when Corporal Hyde returned to Friendshipfrom the Civil War . Along with his wifeJulia he moved into a new octagonal house.AMer joining a spiritualist group, Hyde becamea homeopathic physician and Julia, an or-dained Methodist minister, held sances in thehouse. When Julia died within two days of her

husband, the belief arosethat their departed spiritsfrequented the old, oddly-shaped house.He Society for Ameri-

Rubewas a professional baseball player whopitched in the Major Leagues with the BostonBraves, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubsfrom 1906 to 1912. He is best rememberedfor his role in Merkles Boner, when rookieFred Merkle made a base running mistakethat led to the Cubs winning the NationalLeague Pennant in 1908. In 1881 the Titusville (Pa.) Morning Her-

ald predicted Friendship was On the highroad to prosperity due to businessman A. W.Miner who proposed constructing a railroadto Richburg, the New Oil Capital just ninemiles away. He railroad connected the boom-ing oilKelds to the trunk line of the New York,Lake Erie and Western Railroad located inFriendship.For much of the 20th century the towns

economy Lourished with the success or not ofthe Drake Manufacturing Company foundedin 1897. According to the Sesqui-Centennialbook, Drakes Empire State Malleable IronRange was sold all over the eastern states.Salesman lugged foot square, iron models

of the stove from sale to sale. One such modelis on display in the Friendship Free Library.More than 45 years aMer it ceased stove

manufacturing, the book relates, the companyreceived a request from a Vermont woman fornew grates.He foundry business changed hands and

names in the 1950s and 1960s but in 1965 itwas estimated that 8,000,000 automobiles hadDrake castings in their assembly.In 2012 Friendship, with its Main Street

Klled with antique shops and a handful ofbusinesses and majestic homes celebrates itsrich heritage with the Freedom Fair heldevery summer.
