Thailand is rapidly establishing itself as one of the major golfing destinations around the world and is home to some of the most outstanding courses in Asia, some of which are now included on several of the professional tours. In general the courses are very well-maintained and deliver a friendly and efficient service providing a golfing experience that is difficult to match. There are many different types of courses on offer including challenging championship designs, friendlier resort-style courses and others in the foothills of the north and close to the golden beaches in the south.

Most of the courses are clustered in and around Bangkok but within two hours you can get to the beach resorts of Hua Hin and Pattaya which both have an exceptional choice of golf courses. Further north, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provide some excellent courses, many of which have beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. The island of Phuket, one hour‟s flight south of Bangkok, is probably Thailand‟s premier golfing destination and the resorts of Krabi & Samui also offer some unusual golfing opportunities.

Most courses in Thailand are open to visitors although some of the members clubs have restricted access as playing at the weekend is difficult. The courses around Bangkok and the nearby beach resorts can get crowded at the weekend and some of them charge extra so it is much better to avoid the crowds and play on a weekday. All courses provide caddies and have equipment for hire and most courses offer golf carts (sometimes compulsory and usually one per golfer) although some courses are walking only.

Thailand - Overview

Over recent years, Thailand‟s capital, Bangkok, has changed beyond recognition and today it is an exciting and sophisticated holiday destination. It offers visitors a mixture of ancient and modern with many unique cultural attractions and all the modern conveniences you expect from a major international city. As you would expect there is no shortage of golf courses with more than fifty within easy reach of the city, so it‟s well worth spending a few days here before heading off to explore other regions.

Some of the best courses include Alpine which is one of the best clubs in the Bangkok area, Amata Springs, a private club and the venue of The Royal Trophy which features a movable floating green and Thai Country Club which is owned and operated by the Peninsula hotel group and has raised the bar for service excellence. In Bangkok, you should allow at least an hour and a half to get to your chosen course although most courses take 30-60 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions when you leave your hotel.

Lam Luk Ka Country Club - A bit further out than some of the other courses (75 minutes) but certainly well worth the extra driving time. The complex features two 18-hole courses in beautiful natural surroundings with numerous water hazards and mature trees which are home to many species of birds and other wildlife. The East Course is quite tight and the back nine in particular is a very interesting challenge. The West Course is much shorter but with water everywhere. Good club house with all usual amenities and excellent service.

Bangkok Golf Courses

President Country Club - is a semi-private club which is also open to the public seven days a week. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. - one of the most famous names in golf design, this 36-hole course is around 75 minutes from the centre of Bangkok. Water hazards come into play on most holes and the greens have strategically positioned bunkers which make it tough to get at the flag. Golfers of all levels should have a great day out here.

Bangkok Golf Club - This is one of the more popular courses in Bangkok largely because it is so close to the city centre and takes a mere 45 minutes to get there. The course is quite short when compared to some others but has been redesigned over the years and it still offers an interesting challenge and despite the number of rounds played it is usually in good condition. One of the few courses that offers night golf. Adequate club house that has everything you need but needs upgrading.

Page 15: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Alpine Golf & Sports Club - One of the “must play” courses in Bangkok, the course is in immaculate condition, especially the greens. It‟s a tight, undulating course which provides a great test of golf and superb service all round. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Bangkok Golf Courses

Amata Spring Country Club – Another “special” course and the venue for The Royal Trophy. Superb clubhouse and the golf course is in perfect condition. Has a unique island green which is movable and can only be reached by boat. Allow one hour to get to this course.

Bangpoo Country Club – This recently renovated course was originally designed by Arnold Palmer and will take a while to mature but it is still very playable and much of the course runs alongside the river. Good clubhouse and restaurants. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Page 16: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf
Page 17: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Cascata Golf Club – the course has not been open long and has yet to fully mature but is still worth playing. As it‟s a bit further out the surroundings are more scenic and with its wider fairways it is a great course for the higher handicapper. Around 75 minutes from the town centre.

Muang Kaew Golf Course – one of the closest courses to Bangkok and within easy reach of the airport if you want a last minute game before departure. Recently redesigned the course is in great condition and the back nine is a real challenge. Superb facilities and excellent management all round. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Panya Indra Golf Course – one of the closer courses to the city, this 27 hole layout has been beautifully landscaped but its sloping fairways and protected greens make it a real challenge. Excellent caddies and good clubhouse facilities make this a firm favourite. Transfer time around 40 minutes from most hotels.

Bangkok Golf Courses

Page 18: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Pinehurst Golf & Country Club – another 27-hole layout which was, in its heyday, venue to some major tournaments but it is now showing its age. A pretty flat layout and the Forest nine is the most interesting. The location and relaxed atmosphere make a round here worthwhile and the night golf is an added bonus. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Thai Country Club – probably the best run course in Thailand, the service from start to finish is perfect and the attention to detail and food in the club house is as good as most 5-star hotels. Course is always in great condition and a joy to play and it‟s about one hour from downtown.

The Vintage Golf Club –although close to Bangkok and not far from the new airport the natural surroundings make you feel like you are in the countryside. The course has been well designed and although not too much elevation does offer an interesting challenge. Good clubhouse and facilities and knowledgeable, friendly caddies. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Bangkok Golf Courses

Page 19: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Summit Windmill - Generally regarded as one of more difficult courses in the area this is one for the better golfer – originally designed by Nick Faldo but recently remodeled it is usually in excellent condition. Large clubhouse with excellent facilities and night golf is also available. Transfer time around 45 minutes from most hotels.

Windsor Park & Golf Club – a 36-hole layout set in beautiful parkland with plenty of water hazards. The course is very playable but we recommend that you try to avoid course D which has not yet fully matured. Good clubhouse with excellent variety of Western and Thai food. About one hour from the city centre.

Bangkok Golf Courses

The Legacy Golf Club - Another course within easy reach of downtown and canbe easily reached within 45 minutes. Its proximity to the city means that it can getcrowded at the weekend. Designed by Jack Nicklaus the course is dominated bytwo large lakes which are a factor on many of the holes but the fairways are prettywide although the greens are well protected. A sizeable clubhouse with a choice ofrestaurants and all the usual amenities.

Pattaya is located on the East Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, roughly two hours by car southeast of Bangkok and continues to be a favourite resort for those seeking fun and excitement. Visitors flock from all over the world to enjoy its fine beaches and “over the top” nightlife. Pattaya offers superb dining and shopping opportunities as well as an unparalleled range of water sports. The golf in Pattaya is equally spectacular. Courses you must play include the Jack Nicklaus designed Laem Chabang and the two courses at the Siam Country Club which was recently host to the LPGA tour. Other courses worth mentioning are Burapha which also offers two courses and is a good option for the high handicapper and St. Andrews 2000 which will remind you of playing on the links courses of Scotland.

Laem Chabang International Country Club – One of the most famous layouts in Pattaya and one of the top ten courses in the country. Designed by Jack Nicklaus to blend with the natural surroundings this championship golf course has three nines named: „Mountain', 'Lake' and 'Creek„. The course is always in immaculate condition and the service you receive on course from the caddies and the staff in the clubhouse is always. It takes around 30 minutes from downtown Pattaya.

Siam Country Club - The Plantation Course- is the newest course in Pattaya featuring 27 holes and a very plush and modern clubhouse. The greens are very difficult to read and your approach needs to be accurate as they are designed to throw your ball off and you are often left with a tricky uphill chip. Course is perfectly manicured and the new clubhouse and the all round service are exceptional. Not too much difference between each of the nines. It takes around 30 minutes from downtown Pattaya.

Siam Country Club - The Old Course has been completely renovated and both the greens and fairways were reseeded. A beautiful natural course with mature tress lining most fairways and it was recently host to an LPGA event. Great clubhouse with excellent food and the caddies are very well trained. High handicappers may find this course a handful but the better players will love the challenge. It takes around 30 minutes from downtown Pattaya.

Pattaya Golf Courses

Page 27: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Burapha Golf Club – has two 18-hole courses set in rolling terrain and although not as well-known or well maintained as some of its prestigious neighbors it is still a great course to play. The East course is considered the easier of the two but the West course is undoubtedly more interesting. A well-managed course with a good club house. The course is 30 minutes from Pattaya.

Bangpra International Golf Club – one of the oldest courses in the area - totally renovated around 20 years ago. Because of its age, the trees and tropical plants have had plenty of time to fully mature which makes for a more natural feeling. The fairways are in good condition and the greens are true and fairways and the holes with island greens are very interesting. The Japanese-style clubhouse has excellent food. Takes 40 minutes from Pattaya.

Crystal Bay Golf Club – a slightly uninspiring 27-hole layout which is usually in good condition and is suitable for all standards of golfer. The club house is showing signs of wear and tear but the service and food is OK and can get very busy at weekends. It takes around 35 minutes from Pattaya.

Pattaya Golf Courses

Page 28: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Mountain Shadow Golf Club – located mid way between Bangkok and Pattaya, the course is situated in a mango plantation amidst beautiful natural surroundings. This is a very interesting layout with difficult greens, many water hazards and several island greens. A small clubhouse and the maintenance of the course is not always up to standard. It takes around 50 minutes from Pattaya

Khao Kheow Country Club- conveniently located on the way to Pattaya close to Chonburi this 27-hole wanders through a wooded valley between two hills. In keeping with the designer Pete Dye‟s preferences this course has plenty of large bunkers and water hazards with very tough greens. Good clubhouse with excellent food. Can be reached in 45 minutes from Pattaya and 1 hour from Bangkok

St. Andrews 2000 Golf Course – Is probably best known for its famous for its two par six holes which are more than 800 yards long and as its name suggest is at time reminiscent of Scottish layouts. Its a difficult course with plenty of water and bunkers as well as large strategically-placed boulders. The clubhouse and facilities are shared with its sister course the Rayong Green Valley Country Club. It takes around 40 minutes to reach from Pattaya.

Pattaya Golf Courses

Page 29: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

The Emerald Golf Club – is located in the foothills of Rayong and has been greatly improved since being taken over a few years ago. Not too much water but the tight fairways need accurate drives if you are to score well and the great views will make up for it if you are having a bad round. There is a small but adequate clubhouse with open-air restaurant.

Phoenix Golf & Country Club – the 27-hole course is set in tree-covered rolling countryside with three very different nines. A relatively easy resort course with few water hazards and easy greens. Great views over the surrounding countryside and ocean in the distance. A unusually large clubhouse with excellent facilities and great food.

Rayong Green Valley Country Club - is a very pretty and superbly landscaped course in beautiful countryside littered with many rocky outcrops and boulders. Designed by Peter Thompson, it‟s a delight to walk amongst the native flowers and plants which grow alongside the fairways and greens and this is an experience not to be missed. The excellent club house is shared with St. Andrews.

Located two hour‟s drive south of Bangkok on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand; Hua Hin is still the Thai Royal family's summer residence and as a result you will not see the rampant commercialism that has blighted other areas of Thailand. Cha-am, the other resort nearby, is located just 30 kilometers to the north. Both resorts offer accommodation to suit every taste and pocket, unspoilt beaches, a wide range of water sports, shopping, excellent restaurants, and of course some great golf. There are only seven courses to choose from including the Royal Hua Hin, the oldest course in Thailand and the two new courses – Black Mountain and Banyan , both of which rank with any course in Thailand. Hua Hin is an ideal choice if you are looking for a quieter and more relaxing holiday combined with some great golf.

Royal Springfield Golf Club and Resort – designed by Jack Nicklaus, it is one of the better courses in Hua Hin and is perfect for golfers of all standards. Trees line most of the sloping fairways so driving accuracy is needed and water comes into play on many of the holes. The back nine is the more interesting and difficult of the two and the greens are usually pretty quick but always provide a consistent roll. Great clubhouse and facilities and good caddies make playing this course a great experience. It takes about 25 minutes from Hua Hin.

Black Mountain – one of the newest courses in Hua Hin, it recently hosted the Asian Masters and received excellent reviews from those that played. The course runs along the side of the mountains with great views over the surrounding countryside. It‟s in beautiful condition with excellent greens, very well trained caddies and a very impressive clubhouse. The course is about 20 minutes drive from Hua Hin.

The Banyan Club – is the newest addition to the Hua Hin golfing scene and is one of the most professionally run courses in the area. The course will only improve with time abut already offers a great challenge for golfers of all standards and the pineapple plantations which run alongside some fairways offer an unusual hazard. Great views in every direction make this course a pleasure to play and the clubhouse complex in contemporary Thai style has good range of bars and restaurants. Very close to Hua Hin and takes around 15 minutes.

Hua Hin Golf Courses

Palm Hills Resort and Country Club – as its name suggests, this mature course sits on a gentle sloping terrain in a very natural setting quite close to Hua Hin town. They have made a big effort with the landscaping and there is a profusion of flowering plants and shrubs around the course. The forgiving fairways make this suitable for golfers of all standards and the course is generally in excellent condition. The clubhouse has two restaurants and the usual facilities. Very close to the town and takes just 10 minutes.

Majestic Creek Country Club – is crisscrossed by natural streams and the designer has been very careful to incorporate the natural features into his layout. It‟s a moderately difficult course with water coming into play on most holes and some of the holes are very long – greens are true but a bit slow. The views over the surrounding countryside and the usually excellent condition of the course make this a great golfing experience. Excellent clubhouse and it‟s about 30 minutes from Hua Hin.

Imperial Lakeview Hotel and Golf Club – is the only 36-hole layout in Hua Hin and is located further inland amidst plantations and rolling countryside and is one of the prettiest courses in the area. Very well maintained with excellent greens, each of the 9-hole layouts offers a different experience. The course is part of the hotel so the clubhouse facilities are excellent and have a wide range of sporting facilities and a spa. The course is located about 25 minutes from downtown.

Kanchanaburi which is 130km west of Bangkok and takes about two hours by car is a quiet provincial capital in a fertile valley surrounded by sugar-cane plantations. The area is circled by limestone hills which are renowned for their temple caves and are still used for animistic spirit worship as well as more traditional Buddhism.

This sleepy town capital played a pivotal role during WWII and captured Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and locally conscripted Asians were used to build the infamous “Death Railway” connecting Thailand with Burma. This story was immortalized in the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai and the bridge still remains intact today along with a number of museums and cemeteries in memory of those who died.

It is also a great golfing destination with more than 8 courses within easy reach of the town and the green fees are amongst the cheapest in Thailand.

Mission Hills– Designed by Jack Nicklaus and is set in very natural surroundings in

gently sloping countryside. There are plenty of water hazards and sand traps and

the fairways are mostly lined with mature palm trees. Not easy to score well as the

rough is quite thick and the fast greens are well protected. Good clubhouse with usual facilities.

Nichigo– One of the best courses in the area set in a secluded valley 30 minutes from Chiang Mai Near Sankampheng‟s Hot Springs with wonderful views to the distant hills and mountains with a profusion of wild flowers alongside some of the fairways. This is a course that must be played on any visit to Chiang Mai.

Evergreen Hills– A bit further out than some of the other courses but well worth the extra time as this course set in Lampang‟s foothills alongside a river is one of the most stunning in the area. waterways and ponds almost everywhere you look and they come into play on many

of the holes but make a very scenic backdrop to what is a delightful natural setting.

The remains of a petrified forest dug up during construction can be found in the middle of the course and makes an unusual additional attraction.

Royal Ratchaburi Golf Club– Royal Ratchaburi Golf Club is an 18-hole golf

course in excellent condition measuring 6,877 yards from back tees, or 6,032 yards

from white tees. The course is very picturesque with scenic mountain views and the

designer has used the natural features as much as possible and the result is a very

challenging course with plenty of water hazards and elevation changes. A nice

clubhouse, with open-air restaurant, pro-shop and helpful caddies . The course is about one hour from Kanchanaburi and two hours from Bangkok.

About one hour by air south of Bangkok is Phuket which is not only one of the leading beach holiday destinations in Thailand but also home to some of its best golf courses. The advantage of Phuket is that all of the courses are within easy reach so you do not have to waste too much travelling time and the destination itself offers hotels to suit every budget, great restaurants, relaxing spas and an exciting and cosmopolitan nightlife. The golf is exceptional and the two courses at the famous Blue Canyon are the pick of the bunch although the recently opened Red Mountain is a breathtaking and challenging course. If you are looking for something less challenging then Phuket Country Club, Loch Palm and Laguna are ideal.

Blue Canyon: Canyon Course - one of the most famous and challenging championship golf courses in Asia has been designed to use the natural landscape as much as possible. The course is dotted with several large lakes and rubber trees line most fairways – this combined with long carries over water or canyons and the famously fast greens makes this one of Thailand‟s great golfing challenges. Please remember this is a walking course and can be tiring in the hot weather if you are not reasonably fit. Caddies are among the best in Thailand.

Blue Canyon: The Lakes Course - Built 10 years ago the Lakes Course, as its name suggests, has water hazards coming into play on nearly every hole. The front 9 holes wanders through a landscape of lakes and canyons, whilst the back 9 is more picturesque with more lakes and woodlands of rubber trees. Although rated much easier than the Canyon Course, it is in many ways just as challenging and some of the greens are very difficult if you get the wrong side of the hole. Buggies are available but you can also walk if you prefer.

Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa – this Jack Nicklaus designed course is in a superb location in the north east of the island very close to the ocean and some of the holes actually run up to the water‟s edge. When the prevailing winds blow in off the sea it can get quite challenging and the large waste bunkers are there to catch you if you get offline. There is an extremely large and opulent clubhouse with several restaurants serving International and Thai food. A great resort course with beautiful views and some excellent and challenging holes.

Laguna Phuket Golf Club - Located in the middle of the Laguna Resort complex, close to Bang Tao Beach, this resort-style course is perfect for golfers of all standards. The course wanders through the trees with water lining many of the holes. Most of the greens are very flat with little break which is just as well as general standard of caddies is average. Course is usually in good condition and well maintained. Food is excellent but pricey and this is a walking course with no buggies.

Loch Palm Golf Club- The first few holes hug the edge of one of the largest lakes in Phuket and there is some respite before you encounter another lake near the end of the front nine. Several of the holes have been remodeled and this is now a great layout suitable for all standards of golfer. The clubhouse facilities are a bit run-down and in need of renovation but the food is good and reasonably priced. Can be very crowded at the weekends and during the high season.

Red Mountain Golf Club – Winding its way between the red hills which give it its name, this course is set to become one of the best in Thailand and certainly one of the most picturesque. There are some huge elevation changes between holes and the proximity of the jungle on some holes means you pay a heavy price if you are not accurate. The 17th which is a downhill par three has a 40 meter drop through the jungle canopy to the green below and makes club selection very difficult. The scenic clubhouse overlooks the course and serves International and Thai food.

Phuket Country Club – This is a very friendly resort-style course suitable for all standards although there is plenty to keep the low handicappers interested. The course wanders through hills and limestone cliffs through 3 distinct habitats: 6 holes through undulating hills, 6 holes on the level and 6 holes through the forest. The 10th is shaped like a banana following beside the lake and gives long hitters the chance to go straight for the green. The course is usually in excellent condition and the service and food are good. Caddies are usually knowledgeable and helpful.

If you are looking to combine golf with a cultural experience for your next holiday in Thailand and don‟t like the heat, then Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are the perfect destinations. Located in the mountains of the North, Chiang Mai enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round. Chiang Mai is renowned for its beautiful and charming people and other attractions include striking temples and a beautiful landscape, great entertainment and plenty of shopping opportunities. With milder weather and a number of new golf courses opening up over the last few years, Chiang Mai has become one of Thailand‟s most attractive golfing destinations.

Often referred to as being the “Gateway to the Golden Triangle” Chiang Rai, which is about 180 kms north of

Chiang Mai, is much less developed. The area is renowned for the relaxing ambience and the diversity of its

hilltribes as well as the beautiful natural environment of its many national parks. The Golden Triangle itself is

extremely commercialized and only worth a fleeting visit.

Alpine Golf Club - Connected to the famous course in Bangkok and has recently been extensively renovated. It sits in the middle of the San Kampaeng forests and has great views over the surrounding hills. Plenty of water hazards alongside the fairways and protecting the greens which are fast and true. The course is in excellent condition and is suitable for golfers of all standards The clubhouse has a full range of facilities including a 4-star resort, international restaurant, and a spa. It takes 30 minutes to reach the course from the city.

Mae Jo Golf Club - Built in the middle of an orchard in the foothills 20 minutes north of Chiang Mai, the course winds its way through thousands of matured longan, lychee, mango, pomello, and tangerine trees which are either heavy with fruit or covered in blossom. Many of the fairways are banana-shaped which means blind tee shots and you have to decide how much of the dogleg to cut off. The course is in excellent condition and the greens can be tricky and there are some great views from the elevated tees.

Royal Chiang Mai - Designed by Peter Thomson set amidst beautiful parkland about 30 minutes from Chiang Mai with lovely views over the surrounding hills and mountains. Parts of the course have a links feeling with pot bunkers and undulating fairways and is suitable for all standards of golfer. The course is generally well maintained and the greens are true. The Clubhouse is ecellent with all the usual facilities.

Chiang Mai Green Valley Country Club – Designed by the same team that designed Thai Country Club this championship course is a tough challenge with many water hazards, deep bunkers and not many trees. Designed by Dennis Griffiths & Associates and only takes around 20 minutes from downtown. The course is in great shape with very well maintained fairways and greens. Great clubhouse and the club now offers 9 holes of night golf.

Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort – One of the best courses in the area set in a secluded valley 30 minutes from Chiang Mai Near Sankampheng‟s Hot Springs with wonderful views to the distant hills and mountains with a profusion of wild flowers alongside some of the fairways. The greens are all very well protected and it‟s very tough to get the ball close and even when on the green they are difficult to read. A very good clubhouse with all the usual facilities. This is a course that must be played on any visit to Chiang Mai.

Gassan Khuntan Golf & Resort – A bit further out than some of the other courses but well worth the extra time as this course set in Lampang‟s foothills alongside a river is one of the most stunning in the area. The design includes several tough doglegs, well placed water hazards and the odd island green. The clubhouse is fully equipped with large locker rooms, a pro shop, and restaurant serving Thai food. It takes about one hour to reach the course from the city.

Santiburi Country Club - This beautifully maintained Trent Jones designed course alone makes the trip to Chiang Rai worthwhile. Greens and fairways are in perfect condition and the well designed, interesting and varied holes meander through beautiful surroundings that make for a wonderful day out. Clubhouse facilities are very good. You must play this course when you come to Northern Thailand.

Waterford Valley Country Club - A beautiful setting in a secluded valley about one hour from Chiang Rai this course has beautiful views to the distant mountains. The clubhouse is pretty basic and the course condition just about acceptable. However, it's a really fascinating challenge with blind tee shots, dog legs, elevation changes and some strategically placed water hazards. The tiny greens make scoring very difficult. Despite its shortcomings it‟s well worth the visit and the drive to the course is very picturesque.

Koh Samui is not often thought of as a golfing destinations but is a perfect escape and offers a more peaceful and relaxing alternative to some of Thailand‟s better known beach resorts. The island is covered in coconut palms and ringed by white sandy beaches and most of the hotels are located close to the sea. The island now boasts a championship standard course in Santiburi Samui Country Club, which is extremely challenging. Carved out of the hillside, many of the holes have amazing views over the island.

Santiburi Samui Country Club – a fascinating layout in a spectacular location on a hillside overlooking the island and the ocean beyond. The fairways are quite narrow with the jungle coming almost to the edge so accuracy is paramount and with huge elevation changes there are many blind tee shots – some uphill and others downhill, From almost every tee box you can stop and enjoy the wonderful views, The course is perfectly manicured with immaculate fairways and perfect greens. Superb clubhouse commanding view over the course and ocean beyond.

Rajjaprabha Dam Golf Course – this recently renovated course about 4 hours by ferry and car hours from Samui is in a stunning location in beautiful Khao Sok National Park. The course is painstakingly landscaped using the primeval jungle and great care has been taken with the placement of the holes. A real gem in the middle of nowhere so play it before your friends do.

Koh Samui Golf Courses

Royal Samui Golf Course – A 9-hole golf course built on the mountainside overlooking Lamai and Chaweng beaches. The course has some dramatic elevations and drops offs and at time it seems almost impossible. Worth playing if just for the views but you will need plenty of balls. The second 9 holes are supposed to be completed in the next 18 months.

Golf Tips

Dress Code: Courses in Asia are not usually overzealous about clothing but to be safe wear shirts with collars and ensure you have the proper footwear with rubber spikes.

Dehydration: In warm or humid conditions you may need to drink more than usual to continue to ensure your body functions properly. It is advisable to drink some water before you start playing to ensure that your body is properly hydrated at all times. If you are feeling thirsty, that is a sure sign that your body has already lost too much liquid and you should take a drink immediately. All courses have regular drinks kiosks so please use them.

Sun Protection: Please ensure you use sufficient sun block to protect yourself against the very strong sun in Thailand. The best protection is to use your umbrella as a sunshade. It‟s also possible to hire a second caddie to hold the umbrella.

Caddies: You will have to pay a caddie‟s fee at all courses and it is expected to pay a tip in cash direct to the caddie. It‟s entirely up to you but US$10-15 is usual practice depending on the service you receive. If you are really unhappy with the caddie please note the number and advise us.

Page 73: 160910 - Golf in Thailand - by Diethelm Golf

Change of Clothes: All courses have well-equipped locker rooms so you can shower and change after your game so remember to take a change of clothes with you. Lockers are free of charge, but do not leave anything valuable inside – also it is customary to give a small tip to the attendant.

Golf Carts: Some courses are walking only and do not allow golf carts and at the courses that do permit them they may not be available during busy periods so please ensure that you request one in advance. Also it‟s strictly one cart per person at most courses and depending on the weather you may have to stay on the cart path.

Non-Golfing Guests: If you want to bring a non-playing companion on the course please check with us first as not all courses allow this and they may also make a charge.

Equipment: You can hire clubs, shoes and umbrellas at most courses although the standards do vary and it may not always be the latest equipment.

You can play golf all year round in Thailand although there are three distinct seasons:

November thru February - Dry, "Cooler" Season – At this time of the year the northeast monsoon brings cool, dry air and it‟s an ideal time to visit. During this season, the temperature ranges from 18ºC to 32ºC in Bangkok, while in northern parts, temperatures can get surprisingly cool with daytime temperatures as low as 8º C to 12º C although it‟s usually around 20º C during the day. Nights can be very cold and at higher altitudes and especially on hilltops temperatures can drop below freezing.

March thru June - Summer Season – At this time of the year it can get very hot and sticky and although it is usually dry the temperature soars. In Bangkok the mean temperature hovers around 34º C, and sometimes as high as 40º C with the humidity levels above 75%.

July thru October - Rainy Season - This is the monsoon season when you can expect to get some rainfall most days or at night. The humidity climbs to around 90%, with temperatures close to 29º C in Bangkok. Typically most days will start fine and then clouds will build up in the afternoon and you will get a thunderstorm – it‟s very unusual to get constant rain throughout the day and many times it only rains at night. It is unusual to have to abandon a round of golf due to the weather. The months of August & September season may bring very heavy rains in the north of the country.
