“I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but what-ever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.” – Martin Luther

I think this quote from Martin Luther speaks to stewardship very well. As we’re looking ahead to our upcoming Consecration Sunday on November 22nd, we realize that God has given us all of the blessings that we have – not just our income, but our family, our friends, the food on our table, the possessions that we own, along with all of the many talents that we have. But even more than that, we know that God has also given us his Son, who died for our sins and promises us new life and forgiveness no matter what we do. Sometimes, though, I think we can forget this Good news, we for-get that God is the giver of all things, and we struggle with fear, worry, or jealousy. It’s easy to get caught up in the worries of the day – do we have enough for college funds for our kids or retirement, what if something un-expected happens? All of this is good planning, but if we just live this way, we might forget that we have a God of abundance. That this takes a lot of trust to live into this understanding of God, but it’s worth the challenge. So, as you consider the letter that you receive in the mail, take some time to reflect on this quote from Martin Luther and all of the blessings you have been given.

Along those lines, we understand that our church is a place of bless-ing, where others can be invited in, to find forgiveness and healing, to find a community full of support and hospitality, and a place where their faith can be developed and lived out in the world. But, as I heard at Synod Con-vocation and as I’ve talked with some of you about, some people haven’t been exposed to these great parts of church. To me, it’s hard to imagine never hearing about church from when you were a child (like I did), but there are many whose only exposure to church has been what they hear in the media or from family and friends. Part of this, then, might mean that we have to get creative in how we talk about our church or how we present ourselves. Sometimes that’s through our confident sharing of why we go to church or where our faith in God has been present in our lives. Or that might mean through the way we tell others what we’re doing in the church – through church signs or how we invite others in.

But in both of these spheres, in our individual lives and in our church community, we realize the importance of God’s calling – the God who has sustained us and blessed us and who has journeyed with us throughout our lives. Through our faith, it might be surprising what God does in our lives, if we allow ourselves to trust in his leading.

Blessings to you as you celebrate this month of Thanksgiving! Pastor Kristen

Book Group - Our next book is a very popular novel, The Devil in the White City, by Erik Larson. Wikipedia de-scribes it as, “The book is set in Chi-cago, circa 1893, intertwining the true tales of Daniel H. Burnham, the archi-tect behind the 1893 World’s Fair, and Dr. H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed ‘Murder Castle.’” We hope everyone will join us for what promises to be a good read & a fun discussion. We meet Wednesday nights in the lounge @ 6:00 PM.

Double Nickels meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month. They will be meeting on November 12th @ 12:00 noon in the lounge for a Pot Luck lunch. Bring a dish to share. We will provide the plates, silverware, etc. We would love to see some new faces, so come & join us. Any questions, call Mary Jane Sinicki 864-9930. Daylight Savings —— Don’t
