I later learned, however, that her scalp was bare, she did not have her nose and lips. This makes me believe that she was ritually murdered and I do not have doubts about that. I strongly believe that the people who were with her know what happened to her or had a part in her murder.” The deceased’s daughter-in-law, Ms Takalani Makhwathana, said the murder had been pre-planned. “They waited for me to go to Mpumalanga, where my husband works, and then attacked her. Her death has left a big void in the family as she was the parent figure. I just hope the police will do their job and apprehend the perpetrators and put them behind bars. Mutilated body foundAnother gruesome murder has shocked the Vhembe district - this time in the village of Mbilwi outside Sibasa. Last Friday, the visibly mutilated body of Ms Elinah Mphaphuli (60) was found in a banana plantation.

It is believed that she met her tragic end after enjoying some liquor with locals at a nearby spaza shop. Her body was found just behind the spaza shop.

After news of the gruesome fi nd had spread though the village, angry villagers barricaded the streets, protesting against what they said was the senseless murder of an innocent granny.

A group of government communicators and staff members of several media organisations operating in the Vhembe region pose for a picture with the executive director of SANEF and head of the Media 24 Journalism Academy, Mr Mathatha Tsedu.

Media and government must serve ...

There is a plan to fix the local roads

The executive director of the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) and head of Media 24’s journalism acade-my, Mr Mathatha Tsedu, said both the media and the govern-ment exist to the serve interests of the public.

“Journalism is therefore so-ciety’s way of ensuring that the public is informed on what is happening in the country.

The prerequisites for a good relationship between the media and the government is trust and

a common commitment,” he added.

He was a speaker at the recent Vhembe district communica-tors and media conference held at Northgate Lodge, outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt). More than 80 government com-municators and staff members of different media organisations operating in the Vhembe region attended the event.

Tsedu said appointed commu-nicators or public relation officers must not lie to journalists. “The

media must always balance their stories,” he added.

A representative of the Gov-ernment Communication and Information System, Mr Lega-dima Leso, said government communicators must help to spread information on govern-ment programmes. Cllr Rapson Rambuwani of the Vhembe District Municipality said it was important that a good relationship exist between municipalities, government communicators and the different media houses.

Residents do not need to worry about the appalling state of local roads – there is a plan in place to fix them.

This was the message from the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport (DRT) when ap-proached about the nasty state of local access roads to Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Especially the Madombidzha road has become an increasing threat to hundreds of commuters who use the road daily to get to and from work. The state of this road has already claimed the life of one resident during 2013.

Edwin Mudau was killed in a head-on collision on 5 September last year, when driving along the Madombidzha road. Mudau’s vehicle was hit by another ve-hicle that apparently swerved to avoid a pothole in the road. Since then, the road as gone from bad to worse and many residents fear for their lives.

Local farmers living alongside the road take turns with some local taxi associations to fill up some of the bigger potholes that can be found from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) right up to Madombidzha itself.

In the meantime, more and more local motorists have turned to the newspaper to voice their concerns. In addi-tion to putting questions to the DRT about the state of the Madombid-

zha road, the newspaper also followed up on the condition of the Pontdrift road.

During March this year, Mr Jan Kleynhans of Mike’s Kitchen in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the manager of the restau-rant, Ms Christina Masekwo, narrowly escaped death while driving on this road. As a result of the lack of warning signs on the road, they only realised in the nick of time that a big chunk of road was missing. A bridge across the road had washed away during the flood in January 2013, and has still not been repaired.

The Limpopo Mirror ap-proached the DRT for comment at the beginning of April. In the case of the Pontdrift road, a photograph of the missing bridge accompanied an email to the DRT.

After a week, DRT spokes-person Mr Jimmy Machaka telephonically confirmed that a

plan is in place to fix the bridge on the Pontdrift road. He pointed out that this road is the respon-sibility of the Roads Agency of Limpopo (RAL), and that they are responsible to obtain contrac-tors to repair the bridge. Further questions were ignored.

Weekly follow-up calls were made to determine whether the DRT is aware of the dangerous state of the Madombidzha road. It was only at the end of April that Machaka confirmed tele-phonically that he was able to de-termine that an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) has been authorized for the Madom-bidzha road. “That means that the potholes will get fixed and that they [the contractors] will cut the grass,” he said. Asked when the effects of this programme will be noticeable to motorists, Machaka replied that it would be soon and promised to provide his response in writing. He then ended the call.

This photograph was taken on 28 April on the Madombidzha road, just a day before a spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport confirmed that a maintenance plan exists to fix potholes on the road.

On Monday, 12 May, all the nurses of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) celebrated International Nurses Day. This day commemorates the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Apart from sharing cake, all of the nurses received a special gift from the hospital’s directors to thank them for their hard work and dedication. Photo supplied.

Little Rwanda Arnold made his appearance on Mother's Day over the past weekend at the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). He is the newborn of Mr and Mrs Ramavha. Cosmos started like a house on fire, but they didn’t convert their chances. Then Leopards hit them in the last minute of the first half. Then again as the second half progressed. Then Cosmos got a red card and that’s when I knew Leopards are going to the play-offs. Well done to them and I wish them the best of luck in the play-offs ... home boys. - Mpho Wa Ha Mabaya.

Jail sentence for attempting to steal municipal water pump“Don’t steal our water infrastructure. You won’t get away with it any longer!” was the court’s message upon the conviction of a man who had attempted to steal a municipal water pump.

Johnson Zikhale (19) was sentenced to 18 months’ direct imprisonment without the option of a fi ne by magistrate Marcel Roos in the Louis Trichardt District Court on 9 May.

Zikhale was arrested by the police when attempting to steal a water pump on 29 March at a municipal pumping station behind the munic-ipal cemetery. Authorities were alerted to his presence in the pump station by a newly installed alarm system at the pump house.

The court took the need of the community for water into consideration. “Week after week, every week in the newspaper there are articles about people complaining … no water, no electricity, no water…

The municipality can’t

keep up fi xing all the stuff and it is done [theft] by people who are not even contributing towards this community, like yourself … But the commu-nity has now suffered. The municipality has now suffered...

“So your need for money does not come fi rst in the eyes of the court. This court is here to protect the community ... The court did not even consider a suspended sentence although you are a fi rst offender. This crime is too serious,” magistrate Roos said.

Zikhale’s case was postponed several times. At one stage, rumour had it that Zikhale had escaped. The Vhembe District Municipality,

as the responsible water authority, and civil rights association AfriFo-

rum were pleased to seen him appear in court in person.

“Working with AfriForum as a team has resulted in the suspect’s being arrested. This is good work which will cause other

thieves out there to

understand that we will arrest all of them without bail. The infrastructure will be safer, and we will even add more security to protect the infrastruc-ture,” said Vhembe’s municipal manager, Mr Masala Makumule.

Local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schul-tz said that the community had suffered enough with water stoppages and shortages that were largely due to the consistent theft and vandalism of water infrastructure.

“To date, some R5 million worth of infrastruc-ture, including pumps and cables, has been lost. Before AfriForum got involved, not one single case had been opened … But now that we are so

close to solving the water sup-ply problem for good, we

needed to ensure that all the good work we and

Schultz. He praised Lt

Huge loss as store room is set alight

The Heal ing Pentecostal Church at Ha-Mangilasi in the Vuwani area was dealt a hammer blow early last Friday morning, when suspected arsonists set fi re to the store room and destroyed equipment to the value of thousands of rands.

The church was founded by Pastor Ndikandafhi Makhuvha of Shayandima. He is also the founder the New Life After Pris-on Community Forum in Tho-hoyandou, an organisation that takes care of released prisoners.

The euphoria and excitement of the 2014 general election have come and gone.

For residents, the national ballot held few sur-prises. The ANC (African National Congress) is still fi rmly in the driving seat with 62.15% of the national vote, and the DA (Democratic Alliance) is still the country’s official opposition party with 22.23% of the vote. As for third place on the national ballot, new kid on the block the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) ruffl ed a couple of feathers, drawing 6.35% of national voter support and cementing their position as one of the top three political players in the country.

The EFF also made a strong showing on the provincial ballot, with the party securing 10.74% of the vote in Limpopo, home of party leader Julius Malema. They fi nished as runners-up to the ANC, who drew 78.60% of voter support in Limpopo with the DA (6.48%) in third place. The voter turnout for Limpopo was 60.72%.

With the results of the national and provincial ballot old news by now, we decided to take a closer look at local voter trends and party support at voting stations in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Musina during the 2014 general elections. The statistics are for the towns only and do not include voting stations in outside areas.

To sum up the elections at a local level, the ANC is still well in control, although the party showed a 1% to 10% decrease in voter support at almost all voting stations. The EFF made the strongest showing, ousting Cope (Congress of the People) as a player at almost all voting stations (the EFF also ousted Cope as the offi cial opposition party in Limpopo). The DA is still in the running, record-ing a slight increase in voter support at almost all voting stations.

Here is a breakdown of the election results at the voting stations in the two towns (in brackets are the voting district numbers):Makhado (Louis Trichardt)

Makhado Show Hall (76060010)DA 51.12% of the vote, ANC 32.87%, Freedom

Front Plus 6.19% and EFF with 5.3%. Both the DA and ANC showed a slight increase.

Makhado Comprehensive Secondary School (76060582)

ANC 55.08%, EFF 26.35%, DA 13.63%, almost 10% down in voter support from 2009.

De-Montfort Catholic School (76060638)The ANC regained its lead at this voting station

which it lost in the 2009 election to the DA. The ANC drew 44.23% of the vote. It was, however, still a close race with the DA in second place with 40.46% of the vote. The EFF was third with 9.11%.

Masedi Combined School / Tshikota (76060234)Down from their 86.17% in 2009, the ANC still

secured 77.25% of the vote. The DA showed good growth with 13.39% voter support (up from their 2.24% in 2009), while the EFF secured 7.26%. Cope, who took second place in 2009 with 7.88%, is now out of the mix at this voting station.

Emmanuel Christian Church (76060010)The DA secured a healthy lead, growing their

voter support from 49.35% in 2009 to 60.79% in the recent election. The ANC was in second place, about 5% down from 2009 with 25.19%. In third place was the Freedom Front Plus with 6.08% of

In the fire, musical equipment, sofas, paint and a bed to the value of more than R50 000 were completely ruined. Pastor Makhuvha said he was asleep at home when he received a call from neighbours of the church, who told him the church was on fi re.

“ I i m m e d i a t e l y phoned the police while at the same time rushing to the church. On our arrival, we found many people had gathered and the police were already there. Smoke was still billowing and nothing was saved from the store room. Fortunately, the church was not affect-

ed. We are just praising God for having protected his own building and that the damage was minimal,” he said.

Makhuvha said he was very worried because it took the church a long time to collect the money to buy the equipment. They do not know where they will get money to replace it.

“This is a terrible blow to the church. We have lost in minutes what we had accumulated over a period of time. We heard that it was petrol bombed through a window. People who did this are

not strangers to this church. They know the surrounding and they knew exactly what they wanted. We have put everything in the hands of God and hope the police will make a breakthrough soon,” said Makhuvha.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronél Otto said they were investigating the case. “At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown and our forensic unit is combing the scene. We hope that the results of the investigation will shed light as to what could have started the fi re,” she said.

of the vote, about 6% down in support from 2009. The EEF came in second with 9.1%, with the DA securing 3.16% of votes. Although they fi nished third, support from the DA is up from the 1.57% they secured at this voting station in 2009.

tion, snatching away victory from the ANC with 50.97% (42.88% in 2009). Support for the ANC at this voting station declined from 57.91% in 2004, to 43.82% in 2009 to 35.49% in 2014. At this voting station, the EFF secured 7.62% for a third place.

Renaissance Secondary School (76070088) Here the ANC was still the party of choice,

securing 88.07%, albeit down from their 90.97% in 2009. Again the EFF took the 2009 runner-up position away from Cope, rallying 5.93% of the vote. The DA was third-best party with 4.57%, with another slight increase of about 2,5% from 2009.

Shanduka Crèche (76070123)The ANC is still in the driving seat after securing

85.55% of the vote (down almost 6% from their 90.97% in 2009). Cope is once again knocked out of the running and replaced by the EFF in second place, with 8.32%. The DA secured 4.05% in third place, up from their 2.61% in 2009.

St Martin de Porres Primary School (76070055)Here the biggest loser was the DA. After being

the runner-up in 2004 and 2009, and despite a slight increase in support from 2009, they dropped to third place with 4.57% of the vote, having to make way for the EFF (5.26%). Here the ANC is still fi rmly in control with 88.46%, virtually the same voter percentage as in 2009.

Beitbridge Primary (76070022)Here support for the ANC is down from 90.97%

in 2009 to 84.11% in 2014, but it was still a com-fortable win for the party. The EFF took second place once more with 8.15% at the expense of 2009 runner-up Cope. The DA had to be content with third place with 5.8%, a slight increase of 3% in support from 2009.

El-Shadai (76070077)The DA hung on to its lead at this voting sta-

tion, securing 56.89% of the vote (more than 10% better than in 2009). Support for the ANC dropped from 42.94% in 2009 to 28.51%, making them the runners-up, with the EFF taking third place with 5.14% .

Makushu Primary School (76070112)The voters at this voting station gave the ANC

a 10% knock from 88.77% in 2009 to 78.8% in 2014. The EFF made a strong showing, securing 10.6%, at the expense of the previous runners-up, Cope. The DA was in third place with 6.45% of the vote – a healthy increase of just more than 4% from 2009.

Nancefi eld Community Hall (76070044)The ANC retained the lead with 82.41% of votes,

slightly down from 88.77% in 2009. The EFF made a strong showing with 9.19%, ousting COPE as the runners-up in 2009. The DA got 5.41% of the vote, but this is nearly double their 2.25% in 2009.

Rixile Primary School (76070101)Here the ANC took a 10% knock from 2009.

Their 78.88%, however, still put them in the lead. The EFF also made its mark at this voting station, securing 10.79% of the vote to take second place. Despite coming third, the DA’s support grew from 3.14% in 2009 to 7.19% in 2014 - more than double what it had before.

the votes, just ahead of the EFF with 4.96%. Here also, Cope lost a top spot.

Makhado Town Li-brary (76060021)

Once again the DA showed a huge growth in voter support, taking the lead with 54.92% of the vote (way up from their 42.98% in 2009). The ANC came in sec-ond, down once more from their 39.33% in 2009, with 27.74% voter support. The Freedom

Charlotte’s Stars to empower the youthA new dawn has settled on the community of Tshikota in Makhado, after a group of strong-willed parents decided to initiate a non-profit organi-sation (NPO) which caters for the recreational, educational and sporting needs of the local youth.

Charlotte’s Tshikota Young Stars focuses on the empow-erment and development of previously disadvantaged in-dividuals and assistance of the disadvantaged. “The recogni-tion of abandoned skills among the youth and training and development of the ‘have-nots’ is the main focus to achieve the vision and mission of this organ-isation,” said the organisation’s managing director, Vho-Shalati Chabalala.

According to Chabalala, the organisation was formed to look

into social and educational mat-ters of the youth. She said that the lack of extra-mural activities after school and not having school uniforms contributed to the drop-out rate at school.

“As we know, for society to be groomed we need to start developing the children while they are still at a young age,” she said. “The structure is also aimed at safeguarding children from different kinds of abuse.”

Charlotte’s was founded by Chabalala, Vho-Aifheli Mam-phaga and Vho-Lufuno Ra-sivhetshele. So far, the founders are using money from their own pockets to fund the projects.

“Tshikota is an area full of poverty and lots of criminal ac-tivities,” Chabalala said. "Hon-est citizens are living in fear for their lives and properties. Sadly, that's what has become

of many communities in our country. Some of these crimes are committed by idle youths.”

Chabalala also highlighted the problematic issue of teenage pregnancies, HIV and Aids, and unemployment. “All these so-cial ills, if we want our children to live and grow in a sober soci-ety, need to be tackled head-on,” she stated. “So we also need to teach our children to accept the little which their parents are able to provide for them.”

The organisation ensures that there are enough sporting codes available for the youth.

“It’s nice to be a member of the team because we now have a place to go and hang out instead of going and doing crime and smoking,” said Tebogo Msiza, a soccer captain. “We get taught to be responsible kids and go to school every day.”

New communications officer for Musina

Mr Mpho Rathando.

As a way of solidifying its communication sys-tem, Musina Local Municipality announced the appointment of a new communications officer, Mr Mpho Rathando.

The communications manager of the munic-ipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, says Rathando is a well-suited candidate for the job as he comes with much-needed experience in communications acquired from various mainstream institutions in South Africa.

Rathando holds a BA (honours) degree in media studies from the University of the Witwatersrand and is also in possession of a B Tech degree in journalism from Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

He is almost done with his master’s degree in journalism with Stellenbosch University.

Mpho worked for Univen Radio as a freelance programmes producer during June and December vacations in 2004 and was part of the team of writers for Wits campus newspaper Vuvuzela. He worked as a content development officer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s department of anthropology between 2005 and 2006 and later joined the Wits campus radio station - Voice of Wits FM - as a freelance programmes presenter and producer.

Between 2006 and 2007, he was involved in tutoring media studies and African languages at Wits and in January 2008 he joined Government Communication and Information System, where he was responsible for content development. In Octo-ber 2008, he joined the SABC News in Polokwane as a news reporter. Radio listeners will remember him for presenting Ndevhetsini on Phalaphala FM by then.

In November 2010, he joined Parliament as a Hansard reporter, responsible for the production of the official Hansard.

Rathando says that he is keen to impart his knowledge to help the municipality achieve its objectives, particularly in relation to its commu-nication system.

Vhembe district mayoral imbizo at Maheni

Couple in custody for possession of gold

The Vhembe District Munic-ipality will hold a mayoral imbizo today (Friday) at the Assemblies of God Church at Maheni. It is situated in Ward 6 of the Mutale Local Munic-ipality.

The media liaison officer for the Vhembe District Munici-pality, Mr Moss Shibambu, said

that Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe and Mutale Local Munic-ipality Mayor Josephine Muk-wevho would share ideas with various community stakeholders on basic services-related and economic-development issues.

Shibambu said that the public participation programme acted as a platform “to strengthen

and increase public awareness by enhancing positive and crit-ical contributions from various community stakeholders on service-delivery issues”. Sector departments such as home af-fairs, SASA, health, the police, labour, agriculture, economic and environmental affairs and Eskom will render services at the event.

A couple from Zimbabwe are facing serious charges after they were found in possession of gold bars while crossing the border into South Africa.

Peter Spies (39) and his wife Elizabeth (37) briefly appeared in the Messina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, following their arrest on Friday (9th). According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the couple were arrested during a joint operation between members of the police and the SARS’s Customs Unit.

A dog handler from the tax authority was busy doing a routine inspection when he no-ticed a Zimbabwean vehicle that looked sus-picious. Upon searching the vehicle with his dog, the inspector found a wrapped plastic parcel, hidden inside the arm rest compartment of the

passenger seat. The police were notified and when they searched the parcel, they found six gold bars. According to Mulaudzi, the value of the bars is estimated at R6 million. The Spies couple were arrested immediately and kept in police custody until their brief court appearance in court on Monday.

During their appearance, they were charged with the unlawful

possession of a precious metal. They were not asked to plead and no bail was granted to them. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Monday, 19 May.

Mulaudzi confirmed that the postponement was given to af-ford the police further time for investigation to see whether the couple can be linked to other similar cases.

Informative career exhibition for local pupilsPupils from secondary schools around the Vhembe district who attended a career exhi-bition at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Complex on Monday said the sessions were very informative.

The career exhibition, the brainchild of The Science Tube, an organization that is motivat-ing pupils to follow careers in the natural sciences, gave the pupils a platform to get informa-tion about the different career paths in the field of science. The exhibition targeted pupils from Grade 10 to Grade 12.

The pupils were addressed by

the acting Vhembe executive mayor, Cllr Lucy Mulaudzi, who urged them to seriously consider taking careers in the sciences, saying there was a serious skills shortage in the country in those fields.

The coordinator of the event, Mr Ronald Ragadza of a Mid-rand-based organization, The Science Tube, said they had decided on the initiative after realizing that many pupils in the rural areas did not have access to information on careers.

“We are here to motivate them. As you can see, most of those involved in the project are

local people who have succeed-ed, despite their background. It gives the pupils hope that nothing is impossible, no matter what their background might be. We brought in experts who will help these children with all their problems,” he said.

He said they hoped that all who attended would benefit.

Rofhiwa Marwala (18), a Grade 11 pupil at Bababa Sec-ondary School at Ha Luvhimbi, said she would like study chem-ical engineering at the Univer-sity of Cape Town. According to her, the exhibition was an eye-opener to her.

Emotional funeral for Mulalo Nemaranzhe (19)

New state-of-the art community hall for Madimbo

A promising first-year student at the Tswane University of Technol-ogy, Ms Mulalo Nema-ranzhe (19), was buried during an emotional funeral at the Gondeni village burial site on Saturday.

She was killed in a hor-rific taxi accident along Makhado (Louis Trich-ardt)-Thohoyandou road on the eve of Good Friday. Eight people were killed when they were trapped inside a burning taxi.

The burial of the de-ceased was delayed be-cause they were burnt beyond recognition and DNA tests had to be done to determine the identities of the deceased.

Mulalo’s mother, Ms Virginia Nemaaname, wept uncont ro l lab ly during the ceremony, while several family members fainted during the event.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Mu-nicipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, urged motorists to keep the rules of the road to avoid more accidents.

A close friend and classmate of Mulalo, Ms Nkateko Baloyi, said she had lost someone very

close to her as they always shared ideas.

Miss Mulalo Nemaranzhe.

Villagers at Madimbo used to hold their meetings at the headman’s home and under trees. Access to basic services was one of the many challenges they faced. As part of celebrating 20 years of democracy, they now have something to smile about.

As a way of delivering much-needed services to the people, the Musina Local Municipality has provided the villagers in Madimbo with a huge, fenced community hall. The municipality spent R4,1 million to build the spacious community hall, which accommodates 300 people seat-ed. The facility has offices and ablution facilities.

During the official opening of the hall, Mayor Carol Phiri assured residents that they now had a facility in which they could access basic services. “I am delighted to announce that this facility will help vil-lagers in and around Madimbo, as they can now buy electricity and hold their meetings.”

She advised villagers to take care of the infrastructure. “It must be your responsi-bility to ensure that the hall is always in good condition. If you find someone van-dalizing the property, inform the relevant municipality officials about the incident; that way, we will keep this hall in perfect condition.”

Almost all the councilors and headmen from different villages in Musina attended the event. Phiri extended her gratitude to them regarding their role in making sure that the process of building the hall was a success.

“My special thank you goes out to my headmen and councilors for ensuring that the construction process was a success.”

Phiri advised them to work with the community to ensure that the infrastruc-

ture is utilized and is kept in good condi-tion. “It is our collective responsibility to

ensure that the hall is fairly utilized and always in good condition.”

Councillors Mihloti Ramoyada, Fistos Mafela, Bigboy Ndou, Simon Madamalala, Carol Phiri, Gift Phiri and Nkele Milanzi jointly cut the ribbon during the official handing over of Madimbo community hall.

The Department of Public Works launched the construction of a new R3,2 million tribal office building at Kutama on Monday.

During a recent previous visit to the area, the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Thulasi Nxesi, promised the communities within the Kutama area that they would soon receive a new, functional tribal office. During that visit, he was shocked to see the dilapidated office.

Members of the community ex-pressed their joy when the Makhado mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, performed the sod-turning ceremony to kickstart the construction of the project officially.

"We are overjoyed about the fact

that our problem of travelling long distances to access government ser-vices will no longer be necessary,” several remarked.

Mutavhatsindi said that the re-configuration of the Department of Provincial and Local Government into the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs signified the importance and the role of traditional leaders in the lives of the people, especially in rural areas. "Government regards traditional lead-ers as partners in the implementation of its programmes," he said.

He also mentioned that about 30 community members will be em-ployed during the building of the new modern office.

The Thohoyandou police are appealing for help from the community in ap-

prehending three dangerous prisoners who escaped from their holding cells

last week.Edzisani Martin Malabi (23)

of Tshivhulani Thondoni is fac-ing charges of robbery, Brighton Mudemba (19), a Zimbabwean na-tional from Mas vingo, is facing charges of house-breaking and theft and Khaukanani Maxwell Makhaza (29) of Then-gwe Tshilavulu is facing charges of possessing an illegal firearm. They dashed to freedom last Thursday.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson, Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe, said it was suspected that the trio escaped after sawing through the burglar bars at their holding cells.

No description of the clothes they were wear-ing at the time of their escape could be found. The breakout took place at about 22:00.

Tshiovhe urged com-munities to be on the alert for the fugitives and to report them to the nearest police as they are deemed dangerous.

“We are making an appeal to our commu-nities that they should know that these people are on the run and are wanted. We are follow-ing all leads in a bid to rearrest the fugitives and, with the help of our

community, we know they will be behind bars before long,” she said. Those with information can phone the investigating officer, Lt Thivhonali Wilbert Tshirang-wana, at 082 469 2651.

The local Khoro chairperson, Mr Thomas Madzhie.

Kutama supports “crime free community”The youth leader and chairper-son of Tshikwarani local Kho-ro, Mr Thomas Madzhie, said that the community supported a crime-free environment and they would do their best to make Kutama a better place to stay, invest and visit.

He addressed the youth during a meeting at Kutama on Sunday and discussed the ongoing spate of violent crime in the area. Since the beginning of the year, several people were killed and several cases of public violence and arson were also reported.

“Our crime-prevention strat-egy was constructed around the vision of the police, and we will always be part of the army that strives to eradicate crime," he added.

He mentioned that the tradi-tional leaders are always ready to work with different stake-holders to bring peace. "We are also going to play a central role because we know that our people are victims of crime day in and day out,” Madzhie said.

Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini,

chairperson of Munna Ndi Nnyi, said his organisation’s main concern was that there were many youths who took criminals as role models. He warned the youth that crime does not pay. “Our youth must know that if you commit crime, your home is in prison, or you will be confined to a wheel-chair or die before your time," said Mufunwaini.

The spokesperson of the Tshil-wavhusiku SAPS, Ms Munyadzi-wa Marindi, said there was a need to con-sult the lead-ership of the communities because the police alone could not win the war against crime. "Com-munities un-derstand their local leader-s h i p b e t t e r than political office bearers, whom they do

not even know physically. We want community leaders to send a message to their subordinates immediately that there is nothing good in committing crime.

There is no way we can defeat crime if we do not come together and fight for a common cause. Communities need to be aware that they also have a role to play in making their environment a better place to live."

One Way Change makes a difference

Miss Vhembe 2014, Rotondwa Musitha, is thronged by pupils at Matanda Primary School.

Winter will not be a torment for at least 900 pupils who will benefit from a shoe programme held under the auspices of One Way Change in Vhembe.

One Way Change is a Vhem-be community development initiative formed by some enter-tainment practitioners, fashion designers and others to help unfortunate and disadvantaged children.

The project is driven by per-sonalities such as Miss Vhembe, Rotondwa Musitha, Phophi Bam-belani (PDesigns SA), Uniswa and Mizo Phyll.

“So far, we have visited three primary schools, namely Nndwakhulu in Madombid-zha, Matanda and Makungwi in Nzhelele,” said Bambelani. “We believe change can be made by ourselves.

We don’t need to always look up to the government to provide for us. The smallest gesture, such as giving a pair of shoes, can change a child’s life as we know education is the key to unlocking doors.”

According to Bambelani, the project had so far distributed 350 shoes to three schools and

children on the streets. “We met barefoot children in the streets and we stopped to give them shoes,” she said.

One Way Change relies heavi-ly on donations, and raising mon-ey through fundraising events (gigs, fashion shows, car-wash-ing events).

“Our winter project is where we will be collecting blankets for hospitals and health care facilities and home-based care centres,” Bambelani said. “We are planning many more projects. We are also inviting others to join in this initiative.”

More shoes were donated to Nndwakhulu pupils.

The prolifi c reggae artist BlackJahman re-leased an album last monh, to massive response from his fans across the country.

Mandela Lived, Left and Lives on is a fi tting tribute to the late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who passed away on 5 December 2013. This album boasts 11 tracks, which are fused with elements of dub.

“When I started the musical journey, the fi rst al-bum was titled Free-man, referring to Mandela on his way out of jail to meet his people,” says BlackJahman, the stage name for Wit-ness Ntshangase. “It is therefore great for a South African art-ist like me to honour this great hero.”

B l a c k J a h m a n adds that it remains indisputable fact that South Africans own the name Madi-ba (Mandela) before other Africans do. “Africans own this name before the international community does,” he explains. He says it is his hope that this album will help unite all diverse races, cultures, religions, ages, genders and political parties.

“The song Mandela said never again, is a unifi er as massive audiences proved in Mukula village a fortnight ago, and now here in Makha-

do,” he says.Another track, Madiba’s Ghost, calls for a

judgement day for those deviating from the values of humanity such as a better life for all. In relation to this song, the respected musician inquires: “How far are you with the children’s hospitals in all nine provinces? Depriving children education is killing the future.”

BlackJahman gets controversial when he asks Winnie Madik-izela-Mandela and Graca Machel, in the song Tell me more about Mandela, to tell the people more about what the people may not know about Mandela.

“The song is a plea to Winnie and Graca to tell us what we do not know,” he tells. “Most people assume to know but the real truth may be farfetched hence Graca and Winnie

may know better.” BlackJahman believes that he has a duty to teach the nation in his songs. “I will not keep quiet and pretend not to see the poverty of our people,” he says. “Freedom must be for all; a better life for all as well. I call for equal rights and justice for all. If leaders and all citizens can understand this message, we can be a winning country and continent. One love.”

What started as women meeting at the Mu-lenzhe Clinic for voluntary work has given birth to a very formidable cultural group.

Mulenzhe Clinic Cultural Group, which was started in 2013, is the brainchild of a very traditional nurse at the clinic, Ms Margareth Nangammbi (38). The group has 12 members, drawn from the ranks of unemployed women who did voluntary work at the local clinic. They can do almost all the Venda traditional dances but specialise in the Malende dance.

Nangammbi, who is from Lambani, where traditional dancing is one of the most prevalent forms of entertainment, said it started when the women would come to the clinic to help with the cleaning and tending of the vegetable garden at the clinic. “We developed a very close relationship and during break, they would use buckets as drums and would just break into song and start dancing. As someone who understands traditional dancing, after having grown up in such an environment, I could hear that they had talent. That was when I organised a group and we started practising during our spare time. The rest is history,” she said. She said theirs was now more than just a cultural dance group as they supported each other in developing themselves because most of the members were not working. “We perform at most functions in the village and we also perform per invitation at other villages. We also fi nd time to discuss challenges that we come across on a daily basis; those with problems feel free to voice them and

we assist each other. One thing that we have real-ised is that most of our womenfolk lack fi nancial muscle, which makes them vulnerable to abuse,” she said. She said they were now planning to have their own vegetable garden plot where they would plough and plant vegetables which they could use at their homes and also to sell to generate money for members.

“We are going to approach the local traditional leader, Thovhele Jeffrey Ramovha. We know he is keen on development and he will support us. We would like to see women having economic freedom and not having to beg at all times,” added Nangammbi.

Eunice Tshiredo (34), a mother of three from Mulenzhe, said being a member of the group had changed her life completely. “I am not working and every day I would just sit down with nothing to do but ever since I joined the group, I am no longer lonely. When I am with other women, we share experiences and now my life is back on track again,” she said.

Those wishing to have the group perform or want more information can phone Nangammbi at 072 087 5047.

“Use the facilities to acquire more skills”

Aids foundation to hold important seminarThe Limpopo office of the Aids Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) will host a “learning and sharing” seminar at the Royal Hotel in Polokwane next Tuesday and Wednesday (20 and 21 May).

According to the organisers, the seminar aims to orientate 15 Limpopo community-based or-ganisations (CBOs) into a “com-bination-prevention approach to

programming,” so these CBOs can implement projects to better their communities. Local CBOs that are funded by AFSA include Prince of Peace in Malamulele, Far North and Mapate HIV in the Thohoyandou area, Light of Mercy, Hlayisekani, Elim Care Group and Elim Hlanganani in the Elim area and Tshilapfene, Zwoitwa and Vhuwawelo in the Sibasa region. Stakeholders in-

vited to the first day of the session include representatives from the offices of the premier, the pub-lic protector, the human rights commission, Childline and the Departments of Health and Social Development. For more informa-tion phone Mr Roland Vilane, a public and media relations intern at the Aids Foundation of South Africa on Tel 031 2772 709 or 076 1382 955.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, has urged communities to acquire more skills through the Vhembe Skills Development Projects.

“Education and skills development are the most powerful tools for tackling the challenges of unem-ployment, poverty and inequality. The government will continue to provide the necessary support in partnerships of this nature to ensure that our people are freed from economic bondage,” he said.

He officiated during a recent event at the Makhu-vha Stadium during the launch of the Vhembe Skills Development Project and career exhibition.

Ndzimande added that his department is partic-ularly concerned about the 3.5 million youths be-tween the ages of 15 and 24 who are not employed, in education or in training. “Those youths are obviously disillusioned and deprived of a purpose in life,” he said.

He stated that through the National Skills Fund (NSF), his department had invested R 26.7 million in the Vhembe District Municipality Skills De-velopment Project. Training in several skills had already commenced and beneficiaries are being trained in skills such as plant production, animal production, bricklaying and plastering, financial

management, road construction, welding, pipe fitting, plumbing, mentorship, conflict resolution, communication and negotiations.

This project is implemented by the University of Venda, in partnership with the Vhembe Dis-trict Municipality. “To date, the department has disbursed R10 million to this project of the R 26.6 million committed by the NSF,” he added.

New acting principal for Soutpansberg Primary

Kgalema Motlanthe to officiate at graduation

Soutpansberg Primary School bade their princi-pal of more than two decades farewell and wel-comed new acting principal Ms Stienie Fourie.

Fourie says that she is building on the foundation that Mr John Whiteley had laid and that she is en-joying her leadership role together with her strong team of educators.

Fourie has been acting principal since 1 April this year when Whiteley took an early retirement after 22 years of excellent service to the school and the community. “I believe in participating management, equipping potential leaders and building strong structures for the educators and management,” Fourie said. The educators are currently being equipped with leadership material. The team consists of about 20 educators and three administrative staff members.

Concerning the children, Fourie will continue with the good academic standard that the school is known for. Besides the all-important academic aspect, children benefit from active participation in sport, cultural and other extra-mural activities and community projects. Soutpansberg Primary has been declared the best participating school in this year’s CANSA relay and recently enjoyed a visit of the mobile planetarium. Parents can rest assured that the changeover went smoothly and that their

The chancellor of the Univer-sity of Venda, Deputy Presi-dent Kgalema Motlanthe, will confer degrees, diplomas and certificates on more than 1 600 students during a ceremony at the University this week.

Yesterday (Thursday) two sessions took place and today two more sessions will be held at the Univen Auditorium.

The rector, Prof Peter Mbati, said that the academic core proj-ect as measured in terms of the pass rates, graduation rates and research output had grown dra-matically in the past five years. “In the latest research output report from the Department of Higher Education and Training, our publication output per staff member has dramatically grown

from 0.21 to 0.61 units in one year.”

He added that the develop-ments were testimony to the rigour that “we as an institution have continued to invest in both our staff and students, ensuring that critical enablers to the aca-demic project, such as infrastruc-ture and appropriate policies, are in place.”

education and joined the Souties staff in February last year as deputy principal. She had been deputy principal both at Louis Trichardt Primary (from 2010 to beginning of 2013) and at Tshikwarani Senior Primary School (from 2003 till 2009) and had also lectured at Makhado College of Education for five years.

Tekkie Tax 2013 exceeded all ex-pectations by raising R2.4 million in their fi rst year. More than 180 local welfare organisations benefited from the proceeds, which were all distributed in November last year.

The organisers of the campaign, The Marketing Team, received an overwhelming feedback of "Thank you" for organising the fundraising campaign. Ms Bev Seabourne of Highveld Horse Care said, "Finally there is a national fundraising cam-paign where animals can also benefi t, and we are delighted to be part of it. But by caring for the horses and don-keys in the townships and rural areas, we do so much more than looking

after the animals. By educating the owners to keep the animals healthy, we ensure that the family will have an income, children can get to school, and water and coal can be carted. Viva Tekkie Tax!"

This year, the Tekkie Tax team presents yet another opportunity to show where everyonbe's heart lies on Friday, 30 May. Members of the public are asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation from your local SAVF branch (015 516 3841), Mari (084 6283 528) or Annekie (083 6360 862). Businesses in town ordering more than 10 stickers can phone and they’ll deliver.

On Tekkie Tax day, you simply

wear the big sticker on your lapel and put the small one on your cell phone to stay there for the rest of the year. Whatever your outfi t is for the day, wear your tekkies!

The campaign is en-dorsed by 15 of our big-gest and most account-able national NGOs in the country, represent-ing more than 1 000 local organisations.

Retired businessman encourages youth to work hardWhen the history books of names of people who contributed towards the de-velopment of the community in Vhembe are opened, the name of Muzondwa Matthews Tshithavhane will feature prominently.

Tshithavhane (76), a retired business-man who owned a string of businesses at Muraga village outside Thohoyandou, made history in 1996 when he built a clinic for his community at Muledane. He then surprised his community when he was offered patient fees by his community,

but refused and offered it to the clinic. To show that he is serious about devel-

opment and education in his community, he singlehandedly built a classroom at Malavuwe, a village where he had lived before. He has also assisted with many community-driven initiatives and at schools.

About a month ago, he sponsored an event for the community to celebrate the academic success of his children. They all obtained degrees. Shonisani Tshithavhane (22) has a BCom degree, Mashudu (27)

has a degree in environmental sciences, Lufuno (22) also has a BCom and Tshililo (24) has a BCom honours degree. Two of his children could not attend the function as they are working far from home.

Tshithavhane said he would continue to be an inspiration to his community, so that there could be development in the community.

Mr Tshililo Tshithavhane, one of the children, who holds degrees from Univen and University of Johannesburg, said his father would remain an inspiration and

motivation to them. “It was not smooth sailing. My father is a strict person who taught us to respect all people, irre-spective of status. We are very thankful as his children for all the sac-rifi ces he made for us. They were not in vain as we can now go out and fend for ourselves with the education we have,” he said.

Worx of Musina, will take place at the Musina MAC Rugby Club.

Civil rights organization Afri-Forum, concerned about the waste management situation in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), conducted an on-site inspection or a landfi ll audit at the Von-deling Louis Trichardt waste disposal site on 30 April.

The scores on the scorecard of the audit will only be revealed once they have been disclosed to the Makhado Municipality, but these would include pressing issues like daily compaction and soil coverage, adequate drainage on site, proper catchment of leachate (polluted water fl owing from site) and fi res on site.

Before the on-site inspection, which forms part of the AfriFo-rum branch landfi ll site audit for 2014, a process was followed whereby the Makhado Munic-ipality was approached for the necessary licenses of the two sites and the environmental im-pact study (EIA) of the new site. Three licenses pertain: the orig-

inal Vondeling permit, the Von-deling closure and rehabilitation license (2012) and the licence of the new landfi ll site for which permission had been granted in 2011. “We obtained one of the documents from the municipality and used other forums to obtain the others. We used the license conditions and national regula-tions to compile an inspection checklist containing important statutory requirements for the landfi ll site. It is a civil right for every citizen to have a properly managed landfi ll site that is not harming the environment,” said Mr Morné Mostert, attorney and AfriForum Limpopo organizer.

During the site visit conducted by Mostert and the local Afri-Forum branch chairperson, Mr Wally Schultz, water was seen. “This pool of water is in the very centre of the site, near cracked dry ground, which indicates that it hadn’t rained for days and yet the water had not drained away,”

Schultz said. According to the Vondeling waste disposal site permit conditions, works shall be constructed and maintained on a continuous basis by the permit holder to divert and drain all run-off water.

The question may arise wheth-er it is worthwhile to bother with the old landfi ll site, since a new landfi ll site is under construction. The Makhado Municipality has said that the planning is for the new site just west of town to be completed by the end of the year.

“Just as the current landfi ll site, as well as its closure and rehabil-itation, has to be monitored, the construction and management of the new site will also have to be monitored. The Makhado Municipality has to operate the Vondeling site in accordance with its permit conditions while closure and rehabilitation have not yet commenced,” said Mr Julius Kleynhans, AfriForum’s head of environmental affairs.

Akani Banda of Hotspurs hooks the ball, while Thembisani Nevhulamba of Express is attempting to get into position to to intercept.

Joe Express too good for Giyani HotspursThe 3-1 victory of Joe Ex-press at the expense of Giyani Hotspurs in their Safa Second Division League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sun-day was not a true reflection of the game.

Express were by far the better side when it came to ball posses-sion. Joe Express pressed hard in search of early goals, but their strikers were unlucky. Their vet-eran striker, Edwin “Cafu” Ram-phabana, soon realized that it was not this day when he missed two clear scoring chances within 10 minutes.

In the first instance, Ramphabana received a neat pass from Them-bisani Nevhulamba and shot wide from within the penalty area. As if that was not good enough upset the team’s fans, Ramphabana wast-ed another scoring op-portunity in the ninth minute.

This time he could not believe his eyes when his ground cutter missed the goal mouth by inches.

The home side finally opened their account in the 26th minute. Hymer Munyai headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Lu-cas Mashau. Hotspurs did not just stand aside and look on after the

goal; instead, they regrouped from behind and initiated some defence-splitting moves from the middle of the park. Their solitary goal came in the 37th minute. Their captain, Marvelous Makwakwa, beat the offside trap and scored easily.

Express replaced Dzivhu-luwani Simba with Laymond Muleya in a bid to strengthen their striking force early in the last half. Their overlapping de-fender, Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali, scored from a free kick in the

57th minute.Thembisani Nevhulamba of

Express was warned with a card for wasting time. Hotspurs introduced Mbuso Mthombeni and Musa Rikhotso for Kulani Zitha and Bongani Vuma respec-tively. Marvelous Makwakwa of Hotspurs missed a sitter in the 74th minute. He shot straight to the keeper after receiving a bril-liant pass from Lesley Malungani within the box. Edwin Rampha-bana scored the third for Express after a rebound later in the game.

Muraleni United and Oscar Stars draw

Rendani Muthabi of United in possession of the ball, while Syney Luvhengo is on his heels.

Sydney Luvhengo of Stars (left) and Rhulani Maringa attack the ball.

Muraleni United held Makhitha Oscar Stars to a 1-all draw at Muraleni on Sunday.

Stars were out of touch throughout the first half. Shortly after the start, United's kingpin, Mutshutshu Mbodi, disappointed everyone when he beat all the defenders, including the keeper, but shot wide. The defence of both units impressed in the first half and the goalpoachers couldn't break the deadlock. The scoreboard was still 0-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Stars started off at very fast pace, giving their opponents not a moment to breathe. Their midfielders also distributed tell-ing passes to the front-runners. Stars' midfielder, Godwin Mahuwa, did not live up to expectations as he was tightly marked.

Lucky Funyu-funyu should h a v e s c o r e d from a free kick after a defend-er of United, M u v h u l a w a Rambuda, had pushed his op-ponent , John Marindi.

His shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. Ren-dani Muthambi scored United's goal in the 67th m i n u t e a n d Lucky Funyu-funyu equalised late in the match.

Surprise victory for Vhembe students Last minute heartbreak for Baroka FC

Another tricky hurdle faces Express

Vhembe FET College FC came back from a 0-2 deficit and beat Mphego Real Rovers 3-2 in their MMK Funeral Services League match at the Mphego grounds on Saturday.

Rovers approached the game aggressively, with their strikers showing a great appetite for goals. David Munyai of Rovers was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He tackled Lufuno Mbulaheni from be-hind just outside the penalty box. Real Rovers were leading with a goal at half time. Their opening goal came in the 35th minute. Khethani Tshisikule scored with a header after a corner kick that was taken by Paul Nemavhola.

R o v e r s w e r e the first to effect a change to their starting line-up. They replaced Vele Mahalihali with Vuledzani Ntsieni in the third minute of the second half. Vuledzani Ntsieni formed a deadly combination with Khethani Tshisiku-le at the forefront.

T h e M p h e g o team increased the margin in the 54th minute. Vuledzani

Ntsieni was on target after intercepting a back pass. The students did not lose hope de-spite trailing by two goals. They reduced the margin in the 67th minute. Haddon Manena head-ed home after a corner kick by Tshiwela Ratshibvumo.

Rovers lost shape in the mid-dle of the park after the opening goal for Vhembe. They even introduced Ndivhuwo Sadiki for Fulufhelo Mulaudzi as part of their many ways to neutralize their opponents. Moses “Jack”

Razwimisani scored the second for Vhembe after a scramble within the box.

Vhembe replaced Tshiman-gadzo Netshishivhe with Pfunzo Razwimisani. Ntsieni Vuledza-ni of Rovers caused an upset by shooting wide from close range. Mulweli Malada was on target in the 84th minute to bring the full time score to 3-2. He finished off a rebound after Rudolph Sithole tried his luck from outside the box.

Moses “Jack” Razwimisani of Vhembe (right) and Nicholas Mathobo of Rovers wrestle to win the ball.

After beating Giyani Hotspurs 3-1 last Sunday, Joe Express are gearing up for another tough Safa Second Division League. They will host The Dolphins at the same venue to-morrow afternoon (Saturday).

While Express have only pride at stake, it will be a matter of life and death for The Dolphins. They are contenders for the league championship, while Express are lying in the middle of the log. Express will pin their hopes on the team’s captain, Thembisani Nevhulamba, and Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana for goals, while

Dakalo Ratshitanga and Lucas Mashau will make sure that their danger area is always clean.

Bellevue Winners Park and Giyani Hotspurs will meet at the Burgersdorp artificial turf stadi-um. Bellevue must win the match at all costs in order to remain a contestant for the league title.

Basel FC will host Magezi FC at the Polokwane Noordelike Rugby Stadium, while Blue Rocks are leaving no stone un-turned in their preparations for their match against Winners Park at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen.

Dynamos will lock horns with Mosesetjane All Stars at the Nwamitwa grounds. Dynamos are tough to beat at home and All Stars will be lucky if they manage to hold them to a draw.

Rospa United will undertake a journey to Modimolle, where they will play against Modimolle Aces at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium on Sunday. Lephalale Young Killers will host Mighty FC at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale, while Great North will be the host in their match against Phungo All Stars at the Seshego Stadium.

Baroka FC, who have been in the second position on the National First Divsion’s log for the past two months, are in mourning. Their promotion dreams were shattered after they were overtaken by both Black Leopards and Milano United during Sunday’s final round of NFD fixtures.

Baroka shared the spoils with Thanda Royal Zulu when they played to a 1-1 draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

They dropped to the fourth position. Black Leopards com-pleted their league programme in the second spot, a position that guarantees them a crack at the promotional play-offs.

Milano United came back from a 0-2 half-time deficit to beat Chippa United 3-2 at the Grassy Park Stadium in Cape Town. Chippa United were presented with the league trophy after the game, despite suffering the hu-miliating defeat.

Their match against Milano United was a mere formality as Chippa United had already gained promotion to the Absa Premiership.

Black Leopards were fairly comfortable winners in their clash with Jomo Cosmos, who had also been in the running for a play-off spot, going into Sunday’s action. Lidoda Duvha scored a goal in each half to beat Cosmos 2-0 at the Makhulong

Stadium in Thembisa. Lebohang Mabotsha and Leonard Ntshan-gase scored for the Thohoyandou outfit.

Roses United played to a 1-1 draw with Maluti FET College at the Kaizer Sebotlelo Stadium in the Free State.

Santos were too good for Blackburn Rovers. Rovers did not respond when Santos scored three goals against them.

Sivutsa Stars and African War-riors scored two goals each in their match at the Phuthaditshaba Stadium. FC Cape Town shared the glory with United FC at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town, and Vasco da Gama lost 1-2 to Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank.

Gogobole Bucs surprise log leadersGogobole Bucs shocked the soccer fraternity when they beat the current log leaders of the Limpopo Dairy league, Gogobole Home Defend-ers, by beating them 1-0 on Sunday.

Defenders were out of touch in all departments. Bucs missed two clear chances in the first 10 minutes. Fhulufhe-lo Ramabulana shot wide from close range after receiv-ing a neat pass from Rudzani Mulaudzi. Nyengedzo Davhana caused another upset five minutes later, when he released aimlessly from out-side the box, much to the disappointment of the team’s sup-porters.

Bucs finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. It was their left flank, Ste-ven Ramalira, who made things hap-pen. His long-range ground cutter left the Defender’s keeper, Mulalo Maphaha,

flat-footed. Both sides effected two changes in the last half. The replacements worked against the vis-itors as they played the last stanza with their backs against the wall. Brighton Phuravhathu and Sinugo Sikhwivhilu of Defenders were reprimanded with cards for different infringements.

Sinugo Sikhwivhilu of Defenders controls the ball and Fhulufhelo Ramabulana is ready to intercept.

Dr William Vun, founder of Glory Christian Centre in East Malaysia, visited the Vhembe District during the last leg of a recent ministry tour to South Africa that included Johannesburg and Pretoria. Dr Vun’s ministry included, among others, appearances at the Agapé Christian Centre and Shammah Ministries in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Dr Vun emphasized that God is the architect and builder of the church and that He has the blueprint for his church. The key is that the pastor and his congregation should know their mandate and purpose and live up to it. Pictured at Shammah Ministries on 8 May are, from left to right, pastor Lorna Vun, Dr William Vun, pastor Sam van Niekerk (Agapé Christian Centre), Pastors Francois and Marinda Strydom (Shammah Ministries).

Referee Chabani excels in national U/19 tournamentA local referee, Jelly Alfred Chabani, made his mark at re-cent the national U/19 tourna-ment in Bloemfontein. He was nominated the best referee of the tournament.

Chabani (18) officiated in six matches, including the fi nal. Super-sport United beat Ajax Cape Town 4-1 in the final. The diminutive referee was presented with a trophy and gold medal after the tournament in honor of his achievement.

The Grade 12 pupil at Shunguwa High School became a referee in 2011. At that stage, he was offi ciat-ing at matches in the Makhado LFA. It was hard work and dedication that made it possible for him to gain promotion to offi ciate in the SAB League in the very same year. 2012 saw him gain promotion to offi -ciate in the then Vodacom Promotional League or Safa second division.

When asked as to which game was the most difficult one in his refereeing career, Chabani smiled before say-ing that no game was difficult for him to handle. He singled out the recent final match of the na-tional U/19 tournament between Ajax Cape Town and Superpsort United in

Bloemfontein as the game where he enjoyed officiating the most. When asked about the allegations that referees solicit bribes from club offi cials, Chabani said that he was aware of the allegations. He reiterated the fact that he has not and will never ask for a bribe from a club offi cial.

He revealed that he has declined many offers from club offi cials who wanted him to fi x the results of their matches. “I don’t want to ruin my

refereeing career by taking bribes,” he said. He in-dicated that his aim was to see himself offi ci-

ating in interna-tional matches

in three years ’ time.

Leopards’ assistant coach, Mr Joel Masutha.

Black Leopards have made it to the promo-tional play-offs, bring-ing to an end months of speculation if the team would qualify to partake in the tourna-ment through which promotion to the Absa Premiership is deter-mined.

Lidoda Duvha beat Jomo Cosmos 2-0 at the Makhulong Stadium in

Black Leopards in promotional play-offs

Thembisa last Sunday to fi nish their league pro-gramme in the second position on the log.

The teams that fi nished in the second and third position in the National First Division, together with the second-last team in the Absa Premiership Division, will battle it out for a place in the Absa Premiership. Black Leopards fi nished in second position, with Milano United in third. Milano, Leopards and Baroka FC fi nished their programme with 50 points each, but Baroka failed to make the grade on goal difference.

The opening match between Milano United and the second-last side in the Absa Premiership, Polok-wane City, was played at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday. The result was not yet available at the time of our going to press.

Black Leopards will play their fi rst match on Sunday. They will host Milano United at the Gi-yani Stadium. Their second outing will be against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium next Wednesday, 21 May.

Wednesday, May 28, will see Lidoda Duvha fl y to Cape Town, where they will lock horns with Milano United at the NNK Rugby Stadium. Their last fi xture will be against Polokwane City at the Giyani Stadium on 1 June. The good news in the Leopards camp is that one of their killer strikers, Rendani Ndou, will be available for selection on Sunday. Ndou and David Zulu missed their team’s previous two matches due to injuries.

According to the team’s assistant coach, Mr Joel Masutha, Zulu is likely to be out of action for two months. Apart from the injured David Zulu, their Malawian international, Harry Nyirenda, will also watch the Sunday game from the grandstand. Ny-irenda is still serving suspension after seeing red in their match against FC Cape Town three weeks ago.
