COMMON HEART PROBLEMS

“Heart problems”

Heart disease, cardiac disease or cardiopathy is an umbrella term for a variety of diseases affecting the heart.

As of 2007, it is the leading cause of death in the United States, England, Canada and Wales, accounting for 25.4% of the total deaths in the United States.

Coronary heart disease

Coronary heart disease refers to the failure of the coronary circulation to supply adequate circulation to cardiac muscle and surrounding tissue.

Page 4: 16. common heart problems

Cause

Coronary heart disease is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries to your heart. This may also be called hardening of the arteries.

Page 5: 16. common heart problems

-Fatty material and other substances form a plaque build-up on the walls of your coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood and oxygen to your heart.

-This buildup causes the arteries to get narrow.

-As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.

Risk of coronary heart disease

Diabetes High blood pressure High cholesterol Smoking Overweight Not exercising and

feeling depressed

Symptoms of coronary heart disease

Chest pain or discomfort (angina) is the most common symptom. You feel this pain when the heart is not getting enough blood or oxygen.

Page 8: 16. common heart problems

Women, elderly people, and people with diabetes are more likely to have symptoms

other than chest pain, such as:

*Fatigue

*Shortness of breath

*Weakness

Inflammatory heart disease

Inflammatory heart disease pertains to inflammation of the heart muscles because of an infection that develops from a bacteria or virus or from an internal peculiarity.

The condition may be classified as either myocarditis, pericarditis or endocarditis.

Types of inflammatory heart disease

Myocarditis

Myocarditis describes any inflammation that occurs within the heart muscle. It is induced by various infections which will include viruses like sarcoidosis, and distinct immune diseases. The most prevalent form of infection is the viral kind that assaults the heart muscle resulting in local inflammation.

SYMPTOMS

Pain in the chest Shortnass of breathe swelling of feet and ankles fatigue

Pericarditis

Pericarditis is a disease that causes inflammation of the pericardium. The pericardium is the fluid sac that envelopes the heart. It provides lubrication to the heart thus decreasing friction during activity and also firmly secures the heart to the surrounding walls within the cavity.

Symptoms

Chest pain Mild fever Fatigue Coughing Hiccups Muscle aches

Endocarditis

Endocarditis is induced by an infection of the endocardium or inner lining of the heart resulting in pronounced inflammation.

abdomen Fatigue Pale complexion

Difficulty breathing

Visible purple or red spots exhibited in the mouth on the skin or on the whites of the eyes

Heart Failure

Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of

the body.

Page 17: 16. common heart problems

Cause common cause of heart failure is coronary artery

disease (CAD), a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart

Symptoms

Cough Fatigue Loss of appetite Pulse that feels irregular Swollen liver, feet , and ankles Weight gain

Valvular heart disease

Valvular heart disease is any disease process involving one or more of the valves of the heart

Cause

Cardiomyopathy

Heart muscle disease he deterioration of the function of the

myocardium (the actual heart muscle)

Page 22: 16. common heart problems

Possible Causes

* Long-term high blood pressure * Heart valve problems * Heart tissue damage from a previous

heart attack * Chronic rapid heart rate * Metabolic disorders, such as thyroid

disease or diabetes * Excessive use of alcohol over many years
