People in earthquake rav- aged-Christchurch will be a lot warmer this winter thanks to the even warmer hearts and knitting talents of a group of Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village residents. Just over a year ago town- house resident Joan Wright came over to the rest home with some knitting needles hoping for some more volun- teers to help her knit clothes and scarves for orphans in Moldova, as part of Mission Without Borders – a Chris- tian humanitarian mission serving in Eastern Europe. But when one of the knitters noticed the freezing tem- peratures hitting Christch- urch during the winter, the ten-strong group decided to knit for those affected by the earthquake as well as the countries involved in the Op- eration Cover Up. Once the knitting started it carried on at break-neck speed, and only days before the garments are shipped off to Moldova and Christch- urch, the residents are already thinking about next year. Deborah McIver of Ernest Rutherford, says the knitting has become a daily routine for the residents. “Once they started they just didn’t stop. ey get up for breakfast and they’re onto their needles.” Many of the residents also use knitting for therapy. Councillors adopted the study to the region’s traf- fic problems last ursday, with some amendments, including dropping the clearways option and add- ing a walkway and cycleway around the waterfront. Council has also pledged to review the modelling data on a regular basis to assess if, and when, further in- vestigation into the imple- mentation of the Southern Arterial Corridor should be addressed. ose decisions were made aſter New Zealand Trans- port Agency found that the current analysis from the ar- terial study does not support the need for any new arterial road yet and central govern- ment made it quite clear that there is no available funding for the project. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the decision made by council will help the region plan for its needs into the future. “e recommendation passed has a number of positive outcomes for our transport network. It in- cludes the potential for a fantastic, world-class com- munity boulevard on Rocks Rd, better traffic flow along both Waimea Rd and Rocks Rd and a safer Tahunanui Dr and it ensures that coun- cil secures a future arterial route along the Railway Re- serve if we need to increase our transport capacity in the future.” e council decision also means clearways will not be put down Waimea Rd. “I am happy that council has listened closely to the com- munities who have had a say about our transport future and that it sits well with our annual plan,” says Aldo.

Guitar roadshow hits Nelson storeTim Babbage, of Beggs Musicworks, with one of the guitars in the Guitar Roadshow which is touring the country. The roadshow is in Nelson until next Wednesday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Beggs Musicworks owner Tim Babbage doesn’t mind cleaning up the drool on the floor in front of his guitar display, he understands it.“These are very, very nice guitars at the high end of the market and people have been getting very excited by them,” he says. The guitars in question form part of the Guitar Road Show, which is currently travelling the country and in Nelson for the next week. Tim says they are amazing to play and encourages Nelsonians to get down and have a try.“That’s the great thing about it, these are availa-ble to play and everyone who has played is blown away by the sound of some of these guitars.”The guitars cost between $1500 and $4500 but

some are very rare, including a Mike Stern Sig-nature and a Joe Satriani model.“Guitar fans are very aware of the quality, as you can see by the big drool patch on the floor in front of them,” he jokes.Other than being amazing to play, Tim says all the guitars look cool as well.“We’ve been working our way through playing them and we have our favourite but it is very nice to have a collection like this in store,” he says. The road show came from Christchurch and next Wednesday will be packed up for shipping to Blenheim.Tim says local guitar fans should make the effort to come in before the road show moves on.

Grocery shopping now online in NelsonNelsonians can now do their grocery shopping with the click of a button with the launch of an online shopping service in a local supermarket.Countdown’s Trafalgar Square store launched the service yesterday as part of a national roll out.Adam Hudson, national online manager at Pro-gressive Enterprises, says Countdown has spent weeks stocking extra product in anticipation of the launch and orders will be hand-picked by dedicated personal shoppers.“We have dedicated personal shoppers to pick

items customers have ordered, ensuring each de-livery is full of the freshest products at the best value.”The service will run from Brightwater to Mar-rybank to Maitai Valley and everywhere in be-tween and charges range from $3.95 to pick it up yourself, to $13.25 for orders between $150 and $200. The more expensive the order the cheaper the “online charge”.Adam says customers can also make special re-quests and give instructions with their order,

whether it’s how ripe they want their bananas or if they want their groceries delivered to their back door.“We want to give our customers a fan-tastic shopping experience without even leaving the house. Online shopping of-fers fantastic convenience for our cus-tomers and we’re thrilled to be able to extend this service to Nelson.”Store manager Leigh Mytton is also en-thusiastic about Countdown going on-line and says it is all about the store “go-ing forward”.“At present the online service will only cover the greater Nelson area but even-tually we will cover areas further away.”To celebrate the launching of their new service, Countdown is offering Nelsoni-ans $5 off their first order placed online before Friday 16 November.

Hyundai Motor New Zealand has launched an-other exciting model to its range - the all-new Accent hatch and sedan, further demonstrating Hyundai’s ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities.’ phi-losophy. The all-new Accent hatch and sedan are posi-tioned in the light car segment, offering modern design, surprising interior space and an abun-dance of comfort and safety features while main-taining the delivery of advanced technology, fuel efficiency and performance.Hyundai Design: Following the ix35 compact SUV, i45 mid-sized sedan and recently launched Elantra compact sedan, Accent is the fourth Hyundai car to join the Australian line-up show-casing the company’s signature “Fluidic Sculp-ture” design language. Designed at Hyundai’s Na-myang R&D Centre in Korea, the exterior lines project a futuristic, dynamic, and sleek stance, making Accent striking and distinctive at first glance. Accent’s eye-catching sculptured lines are highlighted by Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille. The swept-back headlights incorpo-rating a two-piece black bezel design and bonnet character lines provide for a unique look. The addition of a distinguishing sculptured char-acter line running through the side profile of Ac-cent combined with a cab-forward design and coupé-like sweeping roof line creates the impres-sion of a larger car. Whether in hatch or sedan form, the rear of Accent is modern and unclut-tered with the wide rear bumper emphasising volume and stability. The Accent hatch is finished with a sporty looking spoiler. Performance: The Accent hatch and sedan are

powered by a 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engine. The all-aluminium four-cylinder engine delivers a peak power output of 91kW @ 6300rpm, and peak torque of 156Nm @ 4200rpm.Ride and Handling: Testing was undertaken in Australia for the optimum front and rear suspen-sion combination, together with unique mapping of the control unit on the Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS). The result is an enjoyable driv-ing experience with refined dynamics to handle variable Australian road conditions.Advanced Safety Technology: All-new Accent hatch and sedan deliver the highest levels of safe-ty, achieving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. Out-standing occupant protection is a core element of Hyundai design with the Accent offering a com-prehensive suite of advanced active and passive safety features to ensure driver and passenger confidence. Active safety is enhanced with the introduction of a segment first Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system. With VSM, a central ECU harmoniously inte-grates all the traditional active safety systems in the vehicle including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and An-ti-skid Brake System (ABS) with Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS). VSM intervenes along-side ESC to help maintain vehicle control by ap-plying a variable input to steering weight, helping prevent the vehicle losing control in emergency situations, such as when suddenly braking or rap-idly accelerating under asymmetric (e.g. wet or slippery on one side and dry on the other) road surface conditions.

One of the biggest primary school musical festivals the region has seen for at least 15 years will be hitting the Trafalgar Centre in September. Thanks to directors John Phillips and Pau-lette Nott, more than 1200 primary school choir singers from Nelson and Tasman will be joining on stage for the three day festival on September 6, 7 and 8.Twenty one schools will be taking part and will be split into three with each group per-forming a night each.John says there hasn’t been a primary school music festival of this magnitude for some time. “We’ve found that kids were getting togeth-er for sport but other than a rockfest type thing at Stoke School there’s nothing for choirs, so we thought here’s a really great opportunity,” says John. The students are equally as excited about their “big gig,” says John. “Absolutely. They’re excited about getting dressed up and putting hair gel in.”Several guest artists will also be perform-ing including national Smokefreerock-quest finalists The Peasants and the string quartet La Vida. The songs chosen have been “rocked up” from normal choir pieces. “It will be a great way for these guys to get their name out there in the community and start their musical career off with a bang.”The general public can purchase tickets from Richmond Mall and The Rock Shop. Tickets are $10 for an adult, $5 for children with under five year-olds free of charge.

NEWS IN BRIEF• The skate park planned for Stoke is to go ahead at the Greenmeadows site, announced Nelson City Council last week. It has agreed to move to the design stage of the skate park on the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Songer St. In their decision council acknowledged the importance of providing a safe place for youth in the centre of Stoke where their ac-tivities can contribute positively to the vital-ity of the area and they can feel part of the community.

• Local Civil Defence public education ef-forts are hitting the mark with residents in our region much better prepared for emer-gencies than many other New Zealand com-munities. A national survey just released shows 37 per cent of Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough residents are fully prepared for emergencies compared with the a national average of just 18 per cent. Local residents are also more likely to be prepared at home for emergencies – 51 per cent compared to the national average of 32 per cent.

• The Stoke Library is getting a makeover. The new look will involve refreshing the dé-cor and creating a comfortable seating area, in response to requests from Stoke users says Nelson City Council. To allow all the work to be done, the library will be closed for the rest of this week.

• The Nelson City Council is supporting the union of Nelson City and Tasman District. In a submission to the Local Government Commission’s call for views on the proposed reorganisation, it agrees the move is appro-priate, but with some further recommenda-tions. These include changing the proposed name from Nelson-Tasman District to Nelson Council, Maori representation and strengthening community board responsi-bilities.

Coastguard searching for new volunteersNelson’s Coastguard service is on the hunt for some new faces – and a new boat. The Coastguard service is run by volunteers and it is after a few more to help keep the regions waters safe. Its president Ian Shaw says the group is after some new faces to help boost its numbers. “We have a good crew of volunteers but we are after more. If kids are at school or leaving school and are thinking about a career in the maritime industry then this is a great way to get in at the entry level and have it all paid for by the Coastguard.”The group goes to call outs from Farewell Spit to d’Urville Island and get roughly 12 inci-dents a year, although a couple of weeks ago they attended two in as many days.

Ian says new recruits may also get to train on a new boat with the Coastguard looking at retiring its vessel after 15 years and buying a new one from the North Island.Harbour master Dave Duncan says the Coastguard is a great place for people to learn and get trained for maritime activities. “The guys here have really lifted themselves to a high standard and what they learn here is second-to-none.”The Coastguard attends boat break downs, rescue services and any other water relat-ed call outs. Its boat is fitted with the latest equipment and members train every Satur-day morning. For more information about the Coastguard give Ian a call on 021 824 583.

Brian Flintoff is world renowned. He is credited with reviving many instruments lost to New Zealand, holds a Queen’s Ser-vice Medal for his contribution to culture in this country and next week will launch his second book at Te Papa in Wellington. But amongst all the accolades, Brian says receiving a stick from the late Maori Queen was by far the most special.“Being awarded the Queen’s Service Medal was very special but it pales in comparison to this [the stick]. It was carved from the tree that the Tainui canoe was tied to and to have an honour like that coming from the Maori world when I’m not Maori is amazing.”That presentation and the importance it holds gives some indication into the re-spect that Brian, a Pakeha, holds in the Maori world. He can walk onto any Marae in the country and receive an incredible reception. He has also been told countless stories that are sacred to Maori. “I’ve had elders telling me stories from their childhood and peo-ple have come along saying ‘why are you telling this to a Pakeha, you haven’t even told us this’. I know I’m extremely privi-leged and very fortunate with the stories I’ve been entrusted with and the way I get treated on Marae throughout the country is just awesome.”Brian began his journey as a bone carver in 1977 after buying a piece for his wife Julia. He was fascinated with it and keen to pick

up a new hobby. That hobby soon turned its attention to Maori art but it was a meet-ing with Nelson musician Richard Nunns that took Brian’s art to an important stage.“I ran into Richard Nunns and we found out we had a bit of a common interest in old Maori instruments. He was learning to play them but was hopeless with his hands, just in the same way that I’m hopeless at making music, but we put our skills to-gether and started researching them.”The journey the pair took was an incred-ible one, recreating instruments that were almost lost. Maori would tell Brian stories from their childhood about how the in-struments looked and sounded. He would then research it, carve it and take it back to see if it was close to what they remem-bered.He says one special instrument he made was by far the most rewarding.“The most special instrument was one we found out about by a group of old men who explained it has half a metre long, blown over a notch in the top and with one finger hole, and they could remember that from boyhood. I made an instrument from that description and they said ‘yes, that’s the sound’. But that instrument wasn’t just a musical instrument and none have sur-vived and I think that’s because it was so special. Its function was to be playing over the womb and over the baby’s head and as you played it you chanted the tribal history and the idea was to transplant it into the brain. Which is accepted now but wasn’t for a long time. So for all the hours and

hours of revival to be a part of something like that is amazing. I’m pretty lucky to be a part of something like that.” He says his second book was to pass on what he has learned and to tell his story.“People have shared so much with me and that is where the book comes in, I’m so

grateful, I want to give it back to the world. It’s been a big challenge but it makes me so happy. I hope people get some joy out of what I’ve witnessed.”The book, Kura Koiwi Bone Treasures, will be launched by Sir Tipene O’Regan at Te Papa on August 28.

Nelson Provincial Museum joined a growing list of regional museums who have reduced barriers to attendance by allowing free access to regional history exhibitions for regional residents and ratepayers.Ratepayers of both Nelson City and Tasman District need only to establish their place of resi-dence on their first visit and they will be issued a small card for future use. Museum CEO Peter Millward reported that there was a very positive response over the first weekend with nearly fifty locals signing up and most of them opted to subscribe to the monthly email newsletter.

In this way local residents will be the first to hear about new exhibitions and public programmes such as lectures and events for families and chil-dren. Temporary and touring exhibitions such as the most recent Hard on the Heels exhibition and the hugely successful da Vinci Machines exhibi-tion of 2008 need to cover their costs by spon-sorship and admission fees. These sorts of exhibitions will still have an entry charge but the intention is that local residents will still see the benefits of their ratepayer sup-port for the running of the Nelson Provincial Museum.

The first batch of fresh local oysters is on their way to Nelson from the regions new-est oyster farmers.John and Faye Fosbender, of Rai Valley, harvested the first batch of oysters from their farm in Croixelles Harbour, just north of Okiwi Bay, last week with orders of their Deep Water Oysters already hit-ting restaurants in Nelson. The couple has been planning the new venture for the past 18 months and Faye says a lot of work has been done since, installing processing rooms on their Rai Valley property and trailing new grow-ing techniques to make the oysters a more uniformed shape. They say their hope is to supply high qual-ity, locally farmed oysters to people in Nelson and Marlborough.Faye and John have a contracting business and for years have farmed mussels on the same farm as their oysters. But they were keen to diversify as the squeeze came on their mussel business from big players and they also wanted to be able to work from home. They bought the business off an-other local couple who were just starting

to dabble in the industry. Since then it has been all hands to the pump says Faye.“Both of us have done all the work up to the factory door-step before so we know that, that’s not scary at all but it’s from there, processing, marketing and the office work is a different story. It’s been difficult but it’s been that way because we wanted to do it right and we have, we are now ready. We’ve 30,000 doz-en in the water, not all will be ready this year, and now the harvesting season has started we are really getting into it.”She says shucking and packing the first lot of oysters last week was exciting. “When we started we thought ‘right, we’re into it’ so we said to locals here in the valley ‘if anyone wants any oysters’ and started from there.”The couple now have people marketing their product in Blenheim and Nelson. “We are starting slowly and hopefully we’ll get bigger and bigger. We are selling them in local bars and the idea is to keep it lo-cal.”For more information call the team on 0800 4 OYSTERS.

Keep an eye out for a postcard like this in your newspaper for a trip to Tahiti.

Buddhists and Christians in Nelson are hoping an inter-faith get together will spread to other religions and denomina-tions. Western resident teacher at the Chandrakirti Meditation Cen-tre, Alan Carter, says the idea to have a meeting of the two

religions started when he was looking at hiring a hall at the St John’s in the City Church on Hardy St. Its Methodist minister Alison Molineux was keen on the idea and she invited Buddhists to her church for a dual service and afternoon tea. Alan and

newly-arrived teacher Geshe Jampa Tharchin will host the Christians at their meditation centre this Saturday. They say everyone is welcome to attend and learn more about either re-ligion. It is at 289 Sunrise Val-ley Rd from 10.30-12pm and please bring a plate.

Senior secondary school students at risk of leaving school without a clear career direc-tion were the focus of a free conference de-signed to showcase industries in the Nelson region. Around 180 students – specifically Year 11, but including Year 12 and 13 – spent last Friday taking part in a range of interactive, industry-specific workshops to boost their understanding of different industries and as-sist them with their career decision-making and planning. The Futures Conference is a partnership arrangement between Careers New Zealand, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and the youth transitions ser-vice Nelson Tasman Connections. Careers New Zealand’s Michelle de Vries says the one-day conference will be split into two umbrella streams with the industries

involved linked under the common themes ‘Trades’ and ‘People and Services.’“This was a great chance for young people who are looking for some career ideas to come and look at different industries, get some information on career opportunities, apprenticeships and pathways and even do some hands-on activities to see if a particular industry could be a good fit,” she says.“We’ve already seen some kids get really ex-cited and have a clearer idea of what subjects they need to take at school to get where they want to go.”Students from all of the regions high schools, chose which workshops they would like to at-tend, which included automotive, boat build-ing, carpentry, electrical, beauty, cooking and hospitality, early childhood education and tourism and travel.

City-2-Surf charity walk takes offA charity walkathon this Sunday will see hundreds of Nelsonians walk from Trafalgar St to Tahunanui Beach and back again.Lisa Utton (LJ) from Aboki has or-ganised the walk, thinking it was a good way to get involved in the com-munity and give something back after moving here last year. “I feel it is a worthwhile cause as eve-ryone knows someone who has spent time at the Hospice. We encourage people to bring their dogs, buggies, the whole family. It’s a good excuse to get out on a beautiful Nelson day and blow out the winter cobwebs,” she says.

The walk starts at The Vic Brew Bar in town and follows the waterfront to the Beach Café in Tahunanui. The Beach Café will be supplying muffins to the first 30 people who arrive, walkers can then return back to the Vic Brew Bar where entertain-ment follows. All up the walk is about 10 kilometres long and you can pick up a registra-tion form from Aboki, Beach Café, Nelson Weekly office, Nelson Hos-pice shops, gallery and office to get sponsors, or just turn up on the day and pay a donation. Be at the Vic by 12noon for a 12.30pm start. All proceeds go direct to Hospice.

Deb Castledine, Authorised Financial Adviser (AFA) for Camelot Nelson and her team have organised a fantastic line-up of speakers for this one day event, who will share their wealth creation knowledge and expertise with the women of Nelson.

Deb has over 20 years experience in the Financial Services Industry, having worked as a Financial Planner in Australia and New Zealand. Deb has a passion to educate, encourage and empower women to take control of their Financial Future.

Deb’s message is an important one and the driving reason behind the running of these events. The shocking statistics speak for themselves!• about 80% of women will spend at least a decade alone-the Statistics NZ figures Census 2009 shows 11% of NZ population live alone • Wage and salary earners receive 51.4% of total income received by working-age population (15 yrs and over), Self-employed 10.4% and Government beneficiaries 32.6%! Can this be sustained?• In June 2009 the median (average) weekly income for those receiving income from investments was $14 ($728 pa). Median weekly income from all sources was $538 ($27,976 pa). • Age groups with the highest median weekly investment income were those aged 60-64 with $48 ($2,496 pa) and 65+ $31 ($1,612 pa). Assuming a 5% pa return on investment, this computes to the average 65+ retired person having only $32,240 in retirement savings!• 47% of women over the age of 50 are single.*(So a man is NOT a Financial Plan!)• 50% of marriages end in divorce (The #1 thing couples fight about is money).*

• In the first year after a divorce, a woman’s standard of living drops an average of 73%.*• Of the elderly living in poverty, 3 out of 4 are women, yet 80% of these women were not poor when their husbands were alive.*• 90% of all women will be solely responsible for their financial well-being within their life time.**These are statistics directly from Kim Kiyosaki’s Book ‘Rich Woman’, and right here in NZ the gender gap is also very real.Deb says that “the sad thing is that most women spend more time planning their annual holiday than increasing their financial education”. “People don’t plan

to fail, they just fail to plan!” “I want to change this mindset-knowledge is power, ladies and it is time to take control of your financial future!”

“This week is “Financial Awareness Week” and I want to drive home the message to the women of Nelson that it is never too late to start learning about investment and money management”.“Our Women’s Wealth Creation Day features some

Westpac Nelson Mobile Mortgage Manager Lisa Tolmie has been in the role for nearly a year now but brings with her many years of banking and home loan experience. “A lot of people’s dream is to purchase their own home or make alterations to their existing home, my job is to help these people realise and achieve their property dreams,” says Lisa. “I’m passionate about what I do – so much so that I’m available seven days a week for no obligation advice on property or renovation finance, and different loan structures that may suit you.” Whatever home loan advice or assistance you require, Lisa is dedicated to helping you find a home or residential lending solution that suits you – and she emphasises that obstacles don’t have to stop customers looking at all their options. “Westpac can offer flexibility around your deposit and a range of competitive home loan rates. With 5 months pre-approval, you know how much you can afford to spend before you go house hunting. Buying a house is a big deal and everyone’s situation is different, so I enjoy the challenge of tailoring the right home loan package for each individual.” To discuss all your home loan options, give Lisa a call on 03 545 9721 or 027 267 6270.

NBS Home Loan Flexibility can save you thousands. Most banking institutions focus their

advertising on price, or the interest rate, when trying to entice consumers to try their product. The lower the rate the less you pay. As interest rates are often so close between banks, it pays to check out the flexibility of your home loan before you sign on the dotted line. Apart from a competitive interest rate, being able to make extra principal repayments on your loan is crucial to

repaying your loan years sooner and saving thousands of dollars in interest. For example, paying off an extra $200 per month on a standard principal and interest home loan of $250,000 can reduce the loan term from 25 to 19 years and 8 months (based on an interest rate of 6%p.a.) That’s an interest saving of $57,000! This is a long term projection but does shows that every

little bit helps! Make extra repayments to your home loan principal whenever you can, it’s the best way to repay your loan faster. In additional to making extra repayments on your home loan, being able to change repayments, if you need to, is important. Your bank should allow you to increase your regular repayments, whether you are on a fixed or floating rate. Also changing repayments to interest only repayments if your income position alters should also be available, without being charged a fee for the privilege! The bottom line, rate is important but so is flexibility of repayments.

Whether you have definite personal goals, like saving for a house, retirement or funding your children’s education, or you’re facing a raft of financial challenges like many New Zealanders, the businesses on this page will be able to make a difference to your future. This week is Financial Awareness Week. The best time to get finances under control and set long term goals is NOW.

For most of their working life Kerry and Denise Gridley of Tasman Turf have combined work and married life together, so it’s appropriate their business Tasman Turf is all about growing a long lasting product. Now is a great time to get the lawn you’ve always dreamed of with the aid of Tasman Turf. Kerry and Denise are hands on owners and use hydroseeding, one of the lawn industries best-kept secrets. Hydroseeding is water, seed, fertiliser organic Canadian wood mulch, plus other secret ingredients that are mixed in a special tank and sprayed onto the ground. This creates an ideal micro-climate for germinating plants, and in no time at all you will have a thriving lawn, with a deeper root system, making it much healthier than a roll out lawn. Hydroseeding is an ideal solution for new and old lawns, roading contracts (road berms and banks) and is a great way to get things happening in new subdivisions. There is even an option when it comes to grass seeds with a choice of certified grass seeds available depending on what kind of lawn you want. Murray and Bev Sinclair are the husband and wife team who own P&M Fireplaces. With winter now upon us it is a timely reminder to ensure that your home has adequate heating. Home owners in the Nelson and Richmond areas are being forced to change their existing older woodfires to more efficient forms of heating. The majority of three bedroom homes require around 14 kw to 20 kw to maintain a comfortable living space. Only a woodfire can achieve this comfort zone. Some home owners who have removed their old woodburners have opted to install a convenient type of heating and now regret this choice. P&M Fireplaces have several home owners every week wanting to refit a woodburner. The Nelson Air Quality Plan does not allow this to happen. Once your older woodburner has been removed and replaced with other options your home has lost the right to have a woodfire. The team at P&M fireplaces are experts when it comes to home heating with Murray and Bev’s children Haidee and Wayde also helping out in store. They will be pleased to advise you on the best option to suit your home.

It takes two, two heads are better than one, twice the hands, buy one get one free. All these popular phrases can perfectly describe the benefits of choosing the husband and wife team of Ian and Margret Richards at Summit Real Estate in Nelson. “We find that we can provide an extra dimension for our clients wishing to sell their home. We are able to do our open homes and viewings in a manner that allows us to assist potential purchasers with the relevant details of the property, to chat on a more relaxed basis where often female viewers feel more comfortable dealing with a lady agent, whilst the males can happily talk ‘men talk’ about important issues like garaging, maintenance and sheds! We are a rare couple who enjoy being together 24/7, where work and leisure time merge throughout the week, where we can be on call to assist our clients needs without time consideration. We have a relaxed style of doing business that our customers enjoy, one that revolves around fun not fuss. Margret even leaves homemade cookies after each open home as a thank you to the owners for trusting us to do the best job possible in marketing and selling their home. If you are thinking of selling, take the time to meet us both, I am sure we will all enjoy it.”

Buying a home or investment property is probably the biggest investment you will ever make, and just like having a mechanic check out a car, it’s the wise investor who has the building checked out by an expert prior to purchasing. Keith and Bronwyn Langham of ASAP Building Inspections provide a comprehensive report on the property’s current condition in an easy to understand format, following the NZ Standard. It also indentifies any maintenance work required. They can include a comparison with the council records to identify any unauthorised work that should have had council approval. When it comes to houses the pair knows their stuff, with over 60 years combined experience in the building industry, working together in either building, owning their own building and project management company, and working in council. Keith holds a National Diploma in Construction Management and is a member of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand. “A house may seem nice, but without getting expert advice on the actual condition of the house you may be putting your hard earned money at risk,” says Keith. The pair pays superb attention to detail and pride themselves on being thorough and customer focused. Keith and Bronwyn help buyers make informed decisions.

A year after both sides finished inside the top ten, Nayland College and Nel-son College’s first XI football teams are both realistic chances of reaching the quarter finals of the New Zealand Sec-ondary School Football Championship in Napier next week.Nayland were beaten finalists in last year’s competition and with arguably the two best teenage strikers in the tournament, in Gagame Feni and Jerry Donga, the much younger 2011 squad will be hoping to reach the top eight for the sixth year in a row.Gagame, a regu-lar for Canterbury United’s ASB Pre-miership squad, was the second top goal scorer in the Robbie’s Premier League, netting 12 goals before being struck down with injury.Young midfielder Cory Brown and defender Isaiah Dayman also boast Mainland experi-ence and are two key figures in a side that relies heavily on its strikers.Nelson, a much

more balanced side, may not have the superstars that Nayland possess but host a crop of talent right throughout the starting 11. Led by the versatile Jono Drew, the Dave Shaw-coached side were top qualifiers from the Nelson-

Marlborough region after overcoming Nayland 2-1 for just the

second time in nine years. Dave says the team, who plays

w e e k

in week out in the local mens first di-vision, will be out to better last year’s ninth placing. “I think with these com-petitions you never know what the next year brings with regards to the other colleges,” says Dave. “But we always aim to reach those quarter finals. The nu-cleus of this team have played together

quite a bit.”Nelson Suburbs striker Darrell Han-nah was surprisingly left out of the

Nelson squad, as was first divi-sion standout Ross McPhie,

with Dave opting for a team purely comprising of FC Nelson Col-lege players. Thanks to their wildcard qualifi-cation, Nayland have been drawn in Pool A along-side Mt Albert Grammar School, St Peter’s College of Cambridge and Shirley Boys’ High School. Nelson will play in Pool B alongside Auckland Gram-mar, Tauranga Boys’ High School and Rangitoto Col-lege. The competition begins on Monday August 22.

CROSS COUNTRY: Nelson College’s Mike Lowe has been selected to represent New Zealand at the ISF World Secondary School Cross Country Championship in Valetta, Malta. The 15 year-old was picked for the competition, in March 2012, after winning gold in the Mens 16 national cross country championship in Christchurch a few weeks ago.

FOOTBALL: AMI Nelson Suburbs look cer-tain to hold on to second place in the Robbie’s Premier League thanks to a 1-0 win over last season’s champions Woolston Tech. Brandon Kay scored the game’s only goal. Suburbs, who hold a five point advantage over third place Western, take on this season’s winners Ferrymead Bays at Saxton Field this Satur-day.

SAILING: Learn to sail for free. The Sea Ca-dets last intake of 2011 starts tonight (Tues-day) and is open to 13-15 year-olds. They will be there from 6:30-9pm at 24 Harley St (by the Nelson police station) No obligation. Phone 546 5414 for more details.

PRESS CUP RUGBY: Nelson College did all it could but were unable to beat defend-ing Press Cup champions St Bede’s in Satur-day’s final in Christchurch. Nelson earned its place in the final with a nail-biting win over Christchurch Boys High School last weekend but could not repeat its heroics in the final. St Bede’s won the match 30-12 with Nelson’s points coming courtesy of tries to Latham Jones and Steven Soper and a conversion to halfback and captain Mitchell Drummond.

Young sport stars get set for tournamentThe biggest day on the intermediate school sporting calendar is upon us.Every Intermediate school in the top of the South Island will take part in the annual winter tournament held at Saxton Field this Thursday and Friday.Nelson schools; Broadgreen Intermediate School, St Joseph’s School, Nelson Christian Academy, Nelson College Prep and Nelson College for Girls Prep will be joined by teams from Waimea, Golden Bay, Buller, Renwick and Blenheim. All major winter codes - rugby, football, basketball, netball, hockey, volleyball, table tennis and badminton - will feature at the tournament which has been running for more than 25 years. “It’s two solid days of play and it’s not what they’re used to,”

says tournament co-ordinator Leslie Smith. “It’s a wider competition outside what they’re used to as well.”While rugby is not played at Saxton Field, the two weighted divisions will be held at Greenmeadows and The Broads. Leslie says all the 1100 students are excited to be represent-ing their individual schools. “For a lot of them it’s a goal that they’ve set to be in the winter tournament teams. Our [Waimea Intermediate School] re-ports go out next week and for a lot of these kids their goal is to win in their sport at winter tournament, so it shows what a focal point this is for a lot of these sporty kids.”Nelson schools have all been allocated a school from outside the region and will billet their participating students. The tournament starts on Thursday and Friday at 9:30am.

Tickets to a quiz night for the re-gion’s most promising young foot-baller will be in hot demand after the generous donation of a signed pair of Rory Fallon’s Nike T90 FIFA World Cup football boots, the actual ones he wore in South Africa.Nelson Suburbs midfielder Ross McPhie is using the quiz night, on September 3, to fundraise for his month-long tour of the United States with the Wellington Tor-nadoes academy in December, and the donations of the signed pair of World Cup foot-ball boots by the man who scored the goal which gained qualifica-tion to the tourna-ment, along with a signed All Whites replica shirt, by the side which lost to Australia in Adelaide recently, will certainly help-ing Ross raise the $8000 needed, according to his father James McPhie. “It would certainly go along way,” he says. “Ultimately we will be hands in pockets at the end, but this will certainly help.”Ross was selected as a guest player for the Wellington Tornadoes after the academy’s coach Guy Smith read about the 14 year-old’s goal scoring Chatham Cup debut in the Nelson Weekly’s online edition. The December tour will involve

matches against the Arizona State Champions, CCV Stars, and against Major League Soccer side Chivas USA’s academy side at the Home Depot Center. Tourna-ments also confirmed are the Las Vegas Cup while they are await-ing confirmation in to the Disney Soccer Showcase.

The football boots were donated by Socialize and Rory Fallon, while the shirt was donated by RYOS and Ben Sigmund.Local businesses have also come on board donating vouchers that will be used as prizes and auction items.James says the support Welling-ton Tornadoes have given Ross has been fantastic with Guy acting as quiz master for the event along with goal keeper coach Dale Warburton. “Guy has been re-ally supportive and the fact he is coming down to do this for us, off

his own back, is great. The fact he has helped donated stuff for the good of Ross in unbelievable.”The quiz night will be held at Hampden St School on Septem-ber 3. Tickets are $15 per person for a table of six, although you can come along in smaller numbers but there is limited to book early. To support one of Nelson’s top sporting prospects call Mij Mc-Phie on 0211256084.

Tahuna roars into league grand finalTahunanui Tigers hooker Caleb Lilley makes a break through the Motueka defence at the Tahunanui Playing Fields on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The final date was set last week, but after the Ta-hunanui Tigers roared past their namesakes from Motueka on Saturday the final piece to the TRL Bin Inn Cup grand final puzzle has been put in place. The Tahunanui Tigers will faceoff against minor premieres Stoke Cobras at Tahunanui Playing Fields this Saturday at 2:30pm to decide the sea-son’s champion. Stoke had previously beaten Ta-hunanui 32-18 in the major semi-final, but the Ti-gers will have plenty of confidence after breezing past Motueka 46-14 at home.

Playmaker Eliot Smith made light work of Motue-ka, picking up a brace, while Caleb Lilley scored a hat-trick of tries. Simon Duncan scored two him-self and added seven conversions with Dave Dun-can also scoring. Stoke, who are currently unbeat-en this season, dropped points against Tahunanui earlier in the year with a 22-22 draw. Tahunanui will get home crowd advantage, despite finishing second place heading in to the playoffs, as their home pitch is also home of Tasman Rugby League.

The inaugural Nelson Development Tournament was played at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. The tournament was played in three grades – Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 with teams from Nelson, Motueka, West Coast, Golden Bay and invitation teams from Garin College, Suburban and Broadgreen competing. By all accounts the tournament was a resounding success, not only with players but umpires as well.Umpires were assessed and received feedback from their mentors. Trish Leonard and Shelley Lambie were both successful in passing their Centre Badge while Lisa Vaile came in for praise. The Nelson Under 17 Development team had limited preparation as a team and due to unavailability of a number of players they were bolstered by Shaun Aindow, Lucy Ingham, Hannah Davenhill and Annie Eden from the Nelson Under 15.Coach, Tish Jamieson said the tourna-ment was a great team effort with captain Sade Sadd taking a huge leadership role and was sup-portive through the court in all three mid court positions.Caitlin Stringer was only available for the first game against Golden Bay (winning by 54 – 17) when she displayed great vision to feed her shooters beautifully.Goal attack, Shaun was the stand out in the 45-20 win over Collingwood, she was well support-ed by Deanna Hunter. Ashley Inch and Hannah were a formidable defensive unit, they gathered in valuable ball which in turn was converted.Nelson’s third game was against the spirited West Coast, and although they came within two goals, they were defeated 33-37. Annie Eden, more accustomed to the GD and WD bibs, put

in a sterling performance at wing attack. Annie competed well off the line and fed intelligently.Ashley, Shaun and Lucy were selected in the Tournament Team.Nelson Under 15 Development team coach, Sa-rah Rankin was thrilled with her charges as they swept all before them. Jessie Matthews came in for praise from her coach and was noticed by the selectors as she was named in the Tournament Team. Jessie led her team by example, and her enthusiasm rubbed off onto her team mates. She balanced the court well, took the ball strongly in the air, and gave her shooters an abundance of quality ball.Brittany Kelling was the dominant shooter, con-

verting 41 from 52 while goal defence, Kea McGuinetty displayed great eleva-tion and had impressive defence on the shot.Nelson had a shaky start against Marl-borough, however once they found their

rhythm they proved unstoppable in the 42-16 victory. Keilamarita Pouri-Lane was stunning at goal attack – she drove well, controlled the circle, used the baseline to her advantage and popped out for a superb feed. Hannah Taylor toiled at wing defence to cut the ball supply at the top circle. West Coast had been identified as Nelson’s toughest opposition, however the blue team were up to the challenge with another im-pressive team effort.Hana Morris received the majority of the centre passes and ensured her shooters had quality ball with some precision feeds. Kelsie Hylkeman re-turned impressive shooting statistics while goal keep Annelise Van Zoelen hunted for intercept ball which was converted with ease in the 41-19 win.

Local riders rip it up at club champsA huge contingent of local motocross riders did the region proud at the inaugural Nelson Moto-cross Club Champs recently, winning seven of the ten classes. The Champs were held at the MotoX Events Mo-tocross Park in 88 Valley, near Wakefield and Dan Shallcrass says it was a huge success.“It was a great day, most of the podium places were grabbed by local riders and it was a fantas-tic event for spectators.”Dan says the event has been confirmed for next

year, in late July. Among the local winners were Jared Guthrie, who took out the MX1 class, Hamish Harwood, winner of the MX2 class and ladies winner Aleisha McLauchlan.“We have a great park out there and the amount of riders who are keen to get involved is really pleasing.”Major sponsors of the event were Filco Farm and Sport. The Nelson branch of Red Cross are holding a family fun day at the Ta-hunanui playing fields this Sunday from 11am to 2pm and would like to invite all families in the region to come along. There will be activities for the whole family to participate in including some good old-fashioned games, a bouncy castle and food will be available. The fun day is being held to help raise the profile of Red Cross locally and to acknowledge the sup-port that the organisation receives from the local community. “Hosting this type of event is one way that we can give back to the people who help Red Cross in our area. The fun day is open to anyone who would like to have a nice day out with their fam-ily and we would also encourage our volunteers to bring their children and grandchildren along,” says Amy Wilson from Red Cross. “We are grateful for the help we receive from local people. Volunteers were sent in response teams to the Pike River Mine and to Christchurch following the earthquakes, others regularly deliver meals on wheels, volunteer to collect donations or participate in fundraising, and many people have

donated funds. We wouldn’t be able to function without them.”The Nelson branch of Red Cross will also be holding an Informa-tion Evening on Monday August 22 at their branch at 59 Parkers Road, Tahunanui. This evening is open to all members of the public and will kick off at 6pm with drinks and nib-bles followed by a presentation pro-viding information about the good work that Red Cross does. The In-formation Evening will be followed by the AGM at 7pm. “We are hoping that some people might attend the information evening and decide to get involved by joining our branch committee,” says Amy. “Becoming a committee member doesn’t always involve a lot of work. We are always looking to get new people on board, they provide a new lease of life to the committee with new ideas and inspiration. We are more about pro-viding brain power and a bit of man power for things like collections and research on how best to help people in the community.” Commit-tee members meet once every two months. At least the Stoke Reds know what they are up against in this weekend’s division three semi final – a very good Marist team, but coach Ady Boyd and manager Tony Smith say they are confident of turning around the 31-13 loss to the same side at Greenmeadows over the weekend.Tahunanui Super Liquor Stoke Reds struggled at times against the second-placed Wakatu Hotel Marist but the final score was a little unflattering and underlined Stoke fielding an inexperienced lineup. Tony says the game did provide them with an opportunity to scope out the opposition ahead of this week’s knockout clash at Tahunanui. “We could see what needed to be done, we let in a couple of soft tries and we had a couple of our own that went begging, one held up over the line and the other knocked on over the line.”A penalty to first-five Paddy Wakatihi and tries to Fabyan Noonan on the wing and Ja-son Beo at half back were the basis of Stoke’s

points in the match. But it had plenty of other standout players, some excellent stampedes by number eight Marc Mitchell and fellow loosies Brendon Mcgrath, Brodie Watkins and Joe Reiri Mangai saw the Marist defence a wee bit rattled at times. Solid work by Mark Ryan at hooker and Toby Harvey at prop. Tony says the boys are confident of an upset this week-end. “If anything is to come out of Saturday’s game it’s the positive feeling that when Marist are faced with our strongest side we will be a different kettle of fish.”On a lighter note the team would like to con-gratulate skipper Wayde Sinclair and his part-ner Chrissie for having a wee girl on Saturday afternoon. “Well done and the thoughts of the Reds are with you both,” says Tony.Stoke line up for its most important game of the season this Saturday so if you are a fan of the Reds make sure you get down to Tahu-nanui playing fields this week and cheer your boys on.
