Wright St peak flow is ~200/hr (~1000/day)

June/July 2017, June 2018 traffic counts

Weekday/weekend peak is ~1600/hr (~20,000/day)

10pm – 5am peak is ~400/hr (~1000/nght)

We anticipate significant reduction in flow along Wallace St

Option 1: Stop Go on Wallace Street

Option 2: Partial Diversion, NB Wright St, SB Wallace St

Close Wallace St/ Wright St

Option 3: Full diversion to Adelaide Rd

Option 4: Full diversion to Tasman St

Option 5: Close Wallace St, NB Wright St, SB Tasman St

Option 6: Close Wallace St, full diversion to Wright St This is by far the safest and least disruptive option

Option 1: Stop / Go on Wallace St

Advantages─ No diversion required

─ No changes to bus operations

Ruled out because─ Stop / Go on Wallace St creates gridlock throughout the network due

to tailbacks

─ The modelling confirms intolerable delays even outside of peak hours

─ This option is not feasible

Option 2: NB Wright St, SB Wallace St

Partial diversion, northbound traffic only onto Wright St

Advantages─ Only northbound traffic on Wright St

Ruled out because─ Wallace St road width is insufficient to safely construct bulk water

pipes from Hargreaves St to Howard St

─ Due to deep trenches, large diameter pipes leaves insufficient room to allow traffic flow past the work site

─ This option is not feasible

Divert via Adelaide Rd ─ Too far from current routes, large number of stops displaced

─ High impact on University and Schools

Divert via Tory St / Tasman St─ Diversion leads to convoluted routes

─ Twice carparks affected & overhead services to resolve (cf Wright St)

─ Significant distance from current routes, stops displaced

Divert via Wright St─ Short Diversion follows same route (1 stop relocated from Wallace St)

─ Some overhead wires need lifting for double-deckers

─ Limited capacity on Adelaide Road for the additional traffic

─ Public transport impact too great – route changes and delays

─ Network resilience compromised if Wallace St + Wright St closed

─ This option is not feasible

─ Very long diversion

─ Tory St / Tasman St ill-suited to anticipated traffic flows

─ More affected residents, more parking displaced

─ Public transport impact significant – long route change

─ Max number of affected residents

Disadvantages─ Significantly increased traffic on Wright St

Advantages─ Shortest diversion length – least impact on residents/parking

─ Least impact on bus operations and bus users

─ Minimal infrastructure change required

─ This is by far the safest and least disruptive option

Testing/Investigations─ Have modelled longest buses using vehicle tracking software

─ Have physically trialled the longest buses by driving the route

─ Wires lifted for double deckers

─ To do: Adjust road camber at corners in Hargreaves St

─ To do: Test drive double deckers

─ Buses will pass each other on Wright St ~16 times a day

Controls─ Bus stop will be near the laneway to Wallace St

─ Signalised crossing for pedestrians as per Wallace St

─ Additional lighting if required

Impacts of diversion on Wright St residents

The additional traffic will be significantly greater than existing flows - expect reduction on current Wallace St traffic

Pedestrian crossing installed near alley through to Wallace St for safe passage across Wright St

Bus stop moved from outside Wallace St dairy to beside new pedestrian crossing in Wright St

Car parks removed on one side (uneven numbers) to provide space for two way traffic

Rubbish collection will be on a different schedule

What can be done to reduce the impact?

Traffic calming measures such as reduced speed limits, traffic lights and minimum lane widths

VMS boards on feeder routes encouraging people to use Adelaide Road as an alternative

Advertising campaign on radio, social media and other online channels telling people to avoid the area

Asking delivery companies, taxis, ubers to use alternate routes

Coupon parking will be changed to residents’ parking in adjacent streets – surveys indicate unused parks exceed ‘lost’ parks

Impacts of work on Wallace St residents

Access to properties from each end of the work site (no through traffic)

Work site moving along the street, different residents impacted as work progresses

No parking on street adjacent to work sites

Full communication with affected residents and businesses

1-1 engagement to address individual issues for access that arise (as we have been doing in Hargreaves St)

Pedestrians will need to use the formal crossing points, this will add distance to some people’s walks
