Teknik MetalurgiIntroduction

The term pyrometallurgy in chemical metallurgy refers to the use of high-temperature reactions and processes for the extraction and the refining ofmetalsmetals.

The key parameters in pyrometallurgy are temperature and environment.

Benefits of high temperatures:

• favorable chemical equilibria

• high reaction rates andhigh reaction rates, and

• Possibility producing the metal in molten or gaseous states whichfacilitates its ready separation from other reaction productsfacilitates its ready separation from other reaction products.

Environments: air, reducing gas mixtures, reactive atmospheres containingthe halogens inert gases or even vacuum

the halogens, inert gases or even vacuum.
