FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC,FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC,
As you know, the three traditional spiritual pillars of the Lenten Season are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Today I want to focus on fasting. The Gospel for this Sunday tells us that Jesus went out to the desert to be tempted by the devil where He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards was hungry. What gives? Was Jesus crazy? Why would he do something as extreme as going without food for forty days and nights? In order to understand Jesus’ motivation, it might be good to begin by asking: What is fasting and why is it a good practice for Christians? In brief, fasting is doing without food for spiritual purposes, either individually or as a group. When we fast, or give things up, it serves as a powerful re-minder that we should remove things in our lives that get in the way of our relationship with God. When we feel hungry or choose not to eat the things we like, we are reminded that everything we have is a gift from God. Our fasting also reminds us of those who do not have enough food, who ex-perience hunger without a choice. Fasting is a powerful way of imitating Christ’s self-emptying. Through fasting, we empty ourselves so that God can fill us! Lent can be more than a time of fasting from certain foods. It can also be a joyous season of feasting. During Lent why not fast from things which harm our rela-tionship with God and others and feast on things that can help us be more like Christ? Here is a Lenten Litany on Fast-ing and Feasting: Fast from judging others; Feast on Christ dwelling in them. Fast from apparent darkness; Feast on the reality of light. Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism. Fast from thoughts of illness; Feast on the healing power of God. Fast from words that pollute; Feast on phrases that purify. Fast from anger; Feast on patience. Fast from worry; Feast on Divine Providence. Fast from unrelenting pressure; Feast on unceasing prayer. Fast from negatives; Feast on positives. Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation. Fast from hostility; Feast on non-resistance. Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness. Fast from anxiety; Feast on hope. Fast from yourself; Feast on a silent heart. - William Arthur Ward (American author, teacher and pastor, 1921-1994) SINCERELY YOURS IN JESUS CHRIST,

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?
TRANSPORTATION SAFETY IS KEY The safety of your children is often entrusted to other drivers – bus drivers, family members, friends’ parents, coaches – and parents should be aware of who is in charge of transportation. Although you cannot control everything, you
can teach your children how to ride in another person’s vehicle. Teach kids to always wear seatbelts, and avoid distracting behavior that will take the driver’s attention away from the road. Ask your school about their policies and the requirements for those who may be in charge of transportation. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Child Care Providers Urged to Check Vehicle Safety, Training, and Health of Drivers,” contact us.

GUIDELINES FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE IN LENT
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and absti-nence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are ob-ligatory from age 18 until age 59. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to cele-brate more readily his Resurrection. - United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
